You deserve the zest. Discover Taylor, Texas, and you’ll discover The Zest of Texas. Just 29 miles northeast of
Austin, and surrounded by corn and cotton fields, Taylor has been a prairie, a railroad town and an idyllic country
community. Today, Taylor is on the progressive edge of an urban landscape. Home to more than 17,000 zesty
residents, the heart of Taylor is bursting with its passionate community, rich history and proud heritage.
365 days of zest. Whether they’re rockin’ out at the Taylor Zest Fest, heating it up at a barbecue cook-off or
shaking it down at the Rattlesnake Roundup, Taylorites like to keep things spicy year round. But that’s just the
beginning. Taylor is also known for its real Texas Rodeo, 4th of July Fireworks and a spectacular Christmas
lights display and parade.
Outdoor enthusiasts can’t get enough of Taylor’s beautiful public parks and can be found enjoying camping,
swimming, fishing and boating on Granger Lake. Taylorites also enjoy staying active and take advantage of the
city’s plentiful hike and bike trails, swimming pools, tennis courts and, of course, the new $8 million Taylor
Regional Park and Sports Complex.
Mental enthusiasts can be found sharpening their minds at the city’s innovative new educational initiative—the
East Williamson County Higher Education Center––or learning about Taylor’s fascinating culture and political
history at the Moody Museum. Those wanting to make a more spiritual connection will find Taylor a destination
for a variety of houses of worship.
While tradition keeps the community grounded, innovation and creativity is attracting a steady flow of business,
newcomers and visitors. Taylor calls this their “pockets of coolness.” Put on your shades and take a look at the
company Taylor keeps.
Sound savory? Find out more by visiting the Taylor Chamber of Commerce at 1519 North Main Street, or online

Putting zest to the test for 133 years. Since its early beginnings, Taylor has responded to challenges, embraced
opportunities and taken risks to preserve the community’s quality of life. Its story is full of flavor and appeal.
Like many Texas cities, Taylor was originally a settlement of German and Slavic communities. Anticipating the
construction of the railroad, Texas Land Company began designing a town in 1876. It was named Taylor Station
after a contemporary official of the International & Great Northern Railroad: Edward Moses Taylor. The town
adopted a mayor-council form of city government in1882, and in 1884, the city fathers changed the name to the
City of Taylor. An important rail shipping center, Taylor quickly became a pivotal point for moving cattle, cotton
and grain.
Taylor’s first test came in February of 1879, when a fire destroyed most of the frame structures. But, this city
responded heartily, replacing the destroyed buildings with the brick and stone structures that boldly stand today.
Taylor didn’t get discouraged when fire destroyed the town, and it certainly wasn’t going to let a little water
dampen its spirit when the worst flood in local history dumped 23 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, (second
only to Thrall’s 38 inches). It was another test, but Taylor forged on.
In 1884, the dog pound was established when a 12-year-old boy was paid 25 cents for each stray dog he could
round up. The city marshall then sold the dogs back to their owners for $1, along with a numbered brass dog tag.
The revenue was collected and used to complete the city’s first sewer system. Now that’s innovative thinking.
Taylor’s first cotton gin was built in 1877, quickly establishing the community as a Central Texas agricultural
hub. Cotton has been one of the mainstays of Taylor’s economy since the early 1800s. Its rich soil and the skilled
farmers made Williamson County a leading cotton producer.
By 1940, the population of Taylor was 7,875 and thanks to light manufacturing during the 1970s and 1980s, the
city grew to 11,472 by 1990 and hit 13,575 in 2000. As of January 1, 2008, Taylor’s population was 17,663. The
steady growth of almost four percent over the last decade has guided community leaders in proactive growth
management.
A history of zest appeal. From wrestling and law to bulldogging and illustration, Taylor has been shaped by a
long line of talent and invention.
• Crawford Henry Booth - an early local rancher and banker.
• Dr. Howard Bland, Sr. - an investor in real estate, a commodities warehouse, a flour mill, an ice house, a hotel,
a local power company, a theater, the Taylor Daily Press and an anti-prohibition newspaper. As a community
leader, Bland served on the City Council and Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the 34th Texas
Legislature.
• Albert Eikel - the owner of the three-story brick hardware store located at 316 North Main Street.
• Elmer “Pet” Brown - won the World middleweight crown in wrestling in 1914.
• Dan Moody, son of Taylor’s first mayor - the first prosecuting attorney in the U.S. to win a legal battle against
the Ku Klux Klan. At age 33, he became the youngest governor of Texas.
• Bill Pickett - an African-American cowboy who initiated the practice of “bulldogging”—or steer wrestling—
and in 1971 was posthumously inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
• Frederick Bean Avery, also known as “Fred/Tex” Avery - an illustrator who created Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny,
Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, Porky Pig and Chilly Willy.
• In 1952, the community demonstrated its gusto—intelligence and honesty—when leaders recognized Dr. James
Dickey as its Outstanding Citizen of the Year. The event made news in TIME magazine and The Saturday
Evening Post because even then, during a time of racial segregation and strife in the South, Taylor was
appreciating its diversity and lauding the achievements of an African-American leader.
More recently, Taylor has been home to celebrity favorites, such as actor Rip Torn and musician Greg Ginn, and
is the location of many unique businesses, such as Williams Brothers Model Products, FlyRite Choppers and SST
Records, which has produced the music of highly influential bands, including Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic
Youth.
Today, Taylor’s diverse cultures, including people of African American, Hispanic and Asian heritage, are
creating a new heritage, a new creative class.
Connected to everywhere. Located in southeast Williamson County, Taylor is just 29 miles northeast of the state
capitol of Austin. The county seat of Georgetown is located just 20 miles to the northwest. Situated at the
intersection of State Highways 79 and 95, Taylor is just seven miles east of the new State Highway 130, a 79mile parallel “by-pass” for I-35, which will eventually connect to I-10, providing easy interstate access northsouth and east-west. A new east-west highway (Chandler Road/ University Avenue), which will provide a second
direct connection point from I-35 to Taylor, is currently under construction.
Taylor is also within close proximity to Houston (155 miles southeast), San Antonio (115 miles southwest) and
Dallas (187 miles northeast), not to mention within a three-hour drive of four major U.S. deep-water ports in
southeast Texas, including the Port of Houston, one of the largest in the nation.
The Capital Area Rural Transportation System (CARTS) makes it easy to get around by providing local and intermunicipal passenger bus transit throughout the region, with several stops in Taylor, including on-call taxis and
buses.
Rail. Amtrak provides daily stops in Taylor for passenger trains running as far north as Chicago and as far west
as Los Angeles. The terminal is located at 118 E. 1st Street, near the Union Pacific Yard Office.
Home to a Union Pacific Railroad marshalling yard, roughly 25 trains—all loaded with coal, grain, stacks, racks,
aggregates, mixed freight, cars and so forth—chug through Taylor day and night.
Airports. The Austin Bergstrom International Airport is a commercial-airport less than 30 miles away, with 37
non-stop destinations for passengers and freight traffic.
Taylor Municipal Airport covers an area of 106 acres, at an elevation of 600 feet above mean sea level. It has one
runway designated 17/35 with a 4,000 by 75-foot asphalt surface, and it is applying to extend the runway to 5,000
feet to accommodate larger corporate jets. There are 51 hangars. The Taylor Municipal Airport polls fuel prices
daily to maintain competitively low prices. For the 12-month period ending July 16, 2008, the airport had 26,100
aircraft operations, an average of 71 per day, all of which were 100 percent general aviation. At that time, there
were 11 aircraft based at this airport: 91 percent single-engine and nine percent multi-engine.
That the Zest is all about. The Zest of Texas is experienced most palpably when you taste our legendary
barbecue. Located on the Texas Barbecue Trail, Taylor knows how it’s done. Louie Mueller Barbecue is a twotime recipient of the James Beard award and is regularly included on Southern Living and Texas Monthly’s best
barbecue lists, and has been featured in People and Esquire magazines. It is also routinely featured on the Food
Network. Vencil Mares’ Taylor Café barbecue has earned kudos from USA Today, while former “Caterer
to the Capitol” Rudy Mikeska’s barbecue has gone from local restaurant to national provider of “zesty” hot links.
James Davis of Davis Grocery serves “come back” sauce for those customers who find themselves having to
come back for more.
Taylor’s flavor also includes The Kolache Shoppe, a must-visit destination for fabulous, authentic Slavic pastries,
and uniquely-Taylor taco stands for those wanting some tasty and satisfying Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine.
Movies, a museum and more. Taylor citizens enjoy a crowd-free, cultural movie-going experience at the
Historical Howard Theatre. Along with first-run movies at the amazing price of $5 per admission, the Howard
Theatre has been “proudly serving folks around Taylor for over 80 years.”
For a spectacular view of Taylor’s political foundations and ideologies, the Moody Museum is a must-see. Built
in 1887, the Victorian home-turned-museum is the birthplace of former Governor Dan Moody. In fact, the first
floor captures much of how it might have looked when the Moody family was in residence, complete with
original furnishings. The upstairs is devoted to exhibits chronicling the life of the governor and his family, as
well as Taylor’s other prominent people and events. While admission to the Moody Museum is free, donations
are gladly accepted.
Zesty area attractions. Located just 10 miles south of Taylor, Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall invites you to
“Take a two-step back in time to the eatinest, drinkinest, dancinest place in Texas!” Folks in the area have been
swinging by for years for the kind of entertainment, food and hospitality you won’t find anywhere else.
The Cotton Club and Steakhouse in nearby Granger attracts neighbors and visitors from all over with live music
and entertainment, dancing, fine food and good fun.
The Texas State Capitol is just 29 miles southwest of Taylor. Visitors can take tours and observe the Governor of
Texas, along with the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate, in action as they go about the business
of the great Lone Star State.
Hidden for 10,000 years, Inner Space Cavern is one of the best-preserved caves in Texas and one of the few
places where remains of prehistoric animals have been unearthed. It’s a short 23-mile drive away from Taylor.
Those interested in more of a road trip will love Longhorn Cavern State Park, Sea World, The Alamo,
Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Natural Bridge Caverns and Round Top Antiques Fair—all of which are within a
couple of hours drive.

Arts and inspiration. Taylor is experiencing an exciting performing arts movement. Special events held
throughout the year include performances by the Williamson County Symphony Orchestra and Taylor Folkloric
Dance Collaborative. Taylorites can learn to move to the groove with dance lessons taught by private dance
schools.
Through a partnership with the community, the Taylor Artist Guild promotes the arts by inspiring and guiding
artists, finding talent and expanding creativity, and connecting Taylor residents with the local area artists.
Thousands descend upon Taylor for the community’s annual Taylor Zest Fest, sponsored by the Main Street
Program. Usually held the first Saturday in May, the family-oriented event is held in Taylor's Historic Downtown
District and offers something for everyone. The Kid Fest delights children with a variety of activities, including
pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, bounce houses and much more. The festival also features unique arts and
crafts, artisan goods, plants, baked goods and retail merchandise. A variety of foods and drinks are available for
those wanting a break from the festivities. At least two stages showcase the talent of local musicians throughout
the day and into the early evening.
The Taylor Public Library offers quality customer service, professional research and reference, and a wide array
of books and materials at no charge to the citizens of Taylor and at a nominal cost to surrounding area residents.
The library offers a wide variety of programs, such as the Summer Reading Program for children, computers with
Internet service, free Wi-Fi and movies for the family.
Quilters of all levels will love the newly formed Blackland Quilting Guild, giving Taylor and Thorndale quilters
the chance to collaborate on projects, donate to charities and connect with fellow artisans.
The newly remodeled Fred Switzer Senior Activity Center is a popular destination, offering seniors a wide range
of activities and a nice place to meet new people and socialize. It has also given the much-needed services of the
Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels a permanent location.
Acres of activity. The Taylor Park System boasts of seven parks and open spaces totaling 311 acres, with tennis
courts, lighted baseball fields, miles of hike and bike trails throughout the community, fishing lakes, playgrounds
and picnic areas.
Outdoor fun is taken to new heights with the opening of Taylor’s new 75-acre, $8 million Taylor Regional Park
and Sports Complex, opened November of 2009. Tournament-ready facilities include 10 baseball and softball
fields (including two championship fields), soccer fields, basketball courts, a lighted full-size football field and
playscapes. A mile-and-a-half of hike and bike trails will attract thousands of weekend warriors, athletes and
anyone who loves playing in the outdoors. For those savoring a slower pace with an appreciation of learning and
leisure, the passive area of Duck Island on the six-acre lake will host the Eastern Bluebird/Wildlife Conservation
Project, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited and several federal/state wildlife management agencies.
Adjacent to the Taylor Regional Park and Sports Complex, is the East Willamson County Event Center, managed
by the Taylor Rodeo Association. The center hosts an annual rodeo along with other national and community
events throughout the year.
The modern Murphy Park complex, in the northern part of the city, offers roughly 55 acres, including a pavilion,
miniature golf course, children’s playgrounds, picnic tables and lighted tennis courts, as well as the Murphy
Aquatic Center with two pools––a children’s beach-entry play pool and an eight-lane competition lap pool.
Lake Granger, just 10 miles northeast, offers a beautiful 4,400-acre lake, 133 class A campsites, 99 day-use
picnic sites, boat ramps, swimming beaches, group shelters, fishing docks and hiking trails. Taylor residents also
have access to 6,700 acres of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department land that allows for game bird hunting and
some of the best exotic-game hunting recreation.
Community gardens embellish the city in two locations. Locals adopt the plots for planting fruits, veggies and
flowers while enjoying time outdoors and relishing the harvest.
The Taylor City Parks Division provides the community with a safe and pleasant leisure environment by
enhancing the quality of life and improving maintenance provisions.
Minor league baseball fan? Locals and visitors can’t wait to see the first pitch at nearby Round Rock Express
(Dell Diamond stadium), just minutes away.
Cultivating the future with high-quality education. Taylor salutes the past while marching forward, placing
immeasurable importance on cultivating the city’s future with student preparedness, success and fulfillment
topping the list.
