It was a frame building with only two wards. There was no running water so conditions were poor at all times. But the community of Bienfait was growing and it was soon found that the small hospital was not large enough. A number of private rooms, a new operating room, and a second story were added to the hospital. This hospital operated for 13 years. It is now a private residence. A second hospital, the Coalfields Union Hospital, opened on December 15, 1946. This new hospital was a fine building with wards, private and semi-private rooms, operating and case rooms, an up-to-date x-ray machine, incubator and sun lamps. A great improvement in the hospital was the hot and cold running water. This hospital is now a boarding house. Bienfait Coalfields Historical Museum This museum is housed in a 1907 Canadian Pacific Railway Station. It contains a display of coal mining from 1895 to the present. There is a working model of a dragline, coal exhibits, and an instrument room with coal burning equipment. There is room that contains memorabilia from the old hospitals, a room with old farming and farmhouse tools and equipment, and other artifacts from the past. 6 INDUSTRY REGIONAL EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY Accommodations and Food Services 1,090 Local Crop Yields Bushels Per Acre Mustard 476 Winter Wheat 43 Construction 1280 Canola 21 Education Services 975 Fall Rye 39 Finance and Insurance 380 Oats 59 Health and social services 1160 Peas 36 Barley 52 Flax 18 Administration, Waste Management Remediation 380 Agriculture 2440 Information and Culture Industries, Recreation 455 Other 1685 Saskatchewan Agriculture 2015 Professional Services and Technical Services 615 Manufacturing 410 Mining, oil/gas, utilities 2,750 Real Estate and Leasing 230 Retail Trade 1215 Transportation and Warehousing 1030 Wholesale Trade 680 Public administration 530 Source: Statistics Canada 2011 National Household Survey, Census Division 1 REGIONAL LABOUR FORCE Total Labour Force 24,635 Employed 17,305 Unemployed 1,085 Source: Statistics Canada 2011, National Household Survey, Census Division 1 RETAIL STATISTICS Retail Sales Saskatchewan 2011 - $16,199 million 2012 - $17,405 million 2013 - $18,301 million Source: Sask Trends Monitor August 2014 7 KEY BUSINESSES IN TRADING AREA Contractors: Turnbull Excavating Inc.
