The first half of the year at KBGA has
been busy, challenging and rewarding.
In January, we broke ground for
the new Welcome Center. With the
transformation of the old Plot Barn
nearly complete, we hosted Hard Hats in
the Garden on June 24 to showcase the
construction progress to date. We are on
target for an official ribbon cutting on
Aug. 14. I want to personally thank Dr.
Alan Solomon, Governor Bill Haslam,
our local State Legislators, Mayor

this possible. To date, we have raised
$1,150,000 of the needed $1,450,000
for the project. As always, a primary focus moving forward is raising capital campaign
funds as well as day-to-day operational funds.
Plans are underway to begin restoring the Mule Barn located on the site of the former
C.B. Howell Nursery as part of KBGA’s Center for Urban Agriculture. Another big thank
you to Mayor Rogero, City Council and especially the efforts of Dan Brown and Duane
Grieve for supporting a grant for this project. In addition to the City’s support, local
businesses have been invaluable in donating needed materials, services and equipment.
Our annual spring and summer events - the Hats in Bloom Luncheon, Great Gardens
Party and Summer Solstice Dinner - were a hit, with each drawing a record
number of guests in attendance. Thank you to Jackie Wilson, Chip and
Jeanie Johnson and Allyn Purvis Schwartz for hosting these annual events.
The new website is almost ready for launch, and it will be a tremendous
asset for marketing and communications moving forward.
We have always been fortunate to have dedicated board members and
friends committed to seeing KBGA reach its full potential. Our own
Anna Ford has selflessly assumed the role of Interim Executive Director
and has kept us on solid ground as we begin to search for permanent
leadership. We thank you for your help, solicit your support, encourage
your participation and celebrate the strides we have made to date.

CENTER FOR URBAN AG
Through a sustainable gardening program here at KBGA,
people are growing food for themselves and others.
At our Center for Urban Agriculture (CUA) on the old
C.B. Howell section of the property, we have dedicated several
acres of the Garden for the promotion of urban farming.
Now entering its third year, the CUA is host to five vegetable
garden areas: (1) the Youth Vegetable Garden maintained by
the Every Child Outdoors (ECO) Program with the University
of Tennessee; (2) the easy-access Family Garden for novice
growers; (3) the Refugee Garden where immigrant families
from Burundi grow traditional crops from home; (4) the
Market Garden - complete with its own greenhouse - where
five teams are growing food for local markets; (5) and the
Experimental Garden used to model sustainable gardening
practices for families, churches and other non-profit groups
gardening in the Knoxville area.
“We have been very blessed to receive help from a number
of partners throughout the community,” said Robert Hodge,
director of the CUA. “Were it not for the capital grant of
$250,000 from the City, or the hundreds of volunteers, or
the many families who now garden with us, or even the tons of
manure from the zoo, we never would have made it this far!”
As you come to visit we hope you find a place of everincreasing beauty and rest and are healthier for having shared
a few hours with us surrounded by trees, flowers and a few good
vegetables. Stop by and visit - our gardeners have lots to share!

SUMMER AT THE GARDEN

Conservation has always been an important mission here at KBGA. Whether it is
through pesticide-free maintenance practices or the nectar rich Butterfly Garden,
we feel strongly that we share this space with many creatures, and we strive to be good
neighbors. With this in mind, we are proud to be working with the Seven Islands
Foundation on our newest wildlife-friendly garden. The garden is located at the top of
our Dogwood Nature Trail - just a few yards from where our new Welcome Center will
be located - and will be a refuge and buffet for our local wildlife population. All the
plant material is native to the southeastern United States and offers important resources
for wildlife - such as flowers, berries or seeds for food or dense evergreen foliage for shelter and nesting habitat.
This garden will also be used for educational purposes, serving as a living laboratory for both school children and adults to see
firsthand how useful and beautiful our native plants can be. We will be adding descriptive signs later this year and will be working
on an informational brochure this winter. We have been detailing progress on our blog, www.knoxgarden.wordpress.com, and we
would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the plants or the process. Our gardens continue to grow thanks to the
support of groups like the Seven Islands Foundation and KBGA members. We thank everyone for their help. We will continue to
be good stewards of the land we have and encourage and educate those interested in doing the same.
IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
Most seed packets provide a mid-summer
message for those wondering aloud, “Is it too
late to plant....? So often we rush our tomato
seedlings, squash seeds and baby watermelon
plants into the garden soil as soon as it is warm
and the afternoon sun brings a light bead of
sweat to our brow. Then about this time of
the summer, we find ourselves surveying the
cucurbits chewed to bits by the squash bugs and thinking that all is lost until the cooler
days when cabbage goes into the ground or wishing that we had thought of pumpkins
back in May or beans in June. Take heart - it’s not too late to keep on planting!
With the long summer season here in East Tennessee comes plenty of extra time to
restart a warm-season garden. Beans - both bush and pole - require only two months’
growth. Squash also grows quickly, and the second round of planting often evades
the roving gangs of bugs. Hot sun and dry soil can be your biggest challenge, but with
a little diligence you can time your new plantings with the forecast so that they find
themselves in an ideal environment of moist soil and ample heat.
UT Extension puts out a wonderful publication called Guide to Warm-Season
Garden Vegetables, available as a PDF online.
Pages 2-3 contain a listing of every vegetable
you could possibly plant in Knoxville along with
a column for the “day to first harvest.” With
planting dates and yields appropriate to your
backyard garden, it’s a great (and free!) resource
to keep around. Take a look and see what you
might want to plant this month!
