Holly Monroe is a third generation calligrapher.
Her motivation is “to feed the soul by making
meaningful words beautiful.” Private commissions and design for the greeting card and gift
industry comprise much of Holly’s work.
Her calligraphy has been commissioned for
documents presented to U.S. Presidents George
H. Bush and William J. Clinton, and French
President Jacques Chirac. She shares her love of
letters and art through her teaching.

T
The Italic alphabet has always grabbed Holly’s
attention when seen through her “calligraphy
glasses” and drawn her into the graceful and
often playful flourishes that calligraphers love
to use to enhance their work. In this workshop,
Holly will share with what she’s learned over the
past 37 years about the proper construction of
the italic letterforms and how to make them
dance on the page with flourishes. Where and
when to use them will be discussed, as well as
how to add unique decorations to the flourish.
You will be challenged with a project, flourishing in the round - a circular design, of your
chosen words, with FANTASTIC FLOURISHES
woven around its circumference - using fabulous fine art tools and materials.

Our imaginations can take us to new heights
...if we allow them to do so with open minds and
a will to explore new territories. Barbara will
show techniques in designing page layouts
without intimidation. Fun step-by-step
processes will be reviewed as well as thinking
outside the box. We’ll be creating the art you
once dreamed of with full confidence and joy.
The essential calligraphic quality of marks and
lettermaking will be stressed. Many fun and
unusual tools will be employed to help you
create these POWER PAGES.
Barbara Close has been a freelance calligrapher,
graphic designer and instructor for many years.
She has taught for several International
Calligraphy Conferences and a variety of classes
throughout California, the U.S. and Canada. Her
work is nationally known as full of vitality and
fun, yet skillfully executed. Her designs include
greeting cards for Marcel Schurman and the
Somerset Studio Magazine Logo.
his workshop explores the flat brush
as a drawing and lettering tool.
By creating flowers and bamboo with the edged
tool, students will develop an ability to control
angle and pressure changes and to work with
several colors simultaneously. “E-Vertical”, a
display alphabet with all vertical strokes, and
“Gull Wing”, her brush Carolingian alphabet, are
excellent warm-ups for learning how to make
the most natural and uninhibited Roman
inscriptional caps you will ever want to make!
Eliza Schulte Holliday is a freelance calligrapher
and lettering artist, hence “Letterist”. She
creates logos, brush illustrations, headlines and
custom alphabets. Updating the arts of the
medieval scribe to create calligraphy with a
contemporary flair, she uses the alphabet as her
palette and her experience as a designer to
develop her creations. Eliza maintains an
impressive list of clients. In addition to design,
Eliza is a longtime instructor and, along with
Marilyn Reaves, has written and published the
book, Brush Lettering: an Instructional Manual in
Western Brush Lettering. She has also produced
the instructional DVD and workbook The Lively
Brush.
