BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2016
DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS
2015 was a year that the Trust continued
to build on our achievements of the past
five years and laid the groundwork for
the next five. Since 2010, the Trust has
become sole owner of the Home and Studio,
strengthened its development efforts with
a wide range of giving opportunities, and
expanded its operations to include five
varied and significant Chicago area sites—
becoming the international gateway to
Wright’s Chicago.
This year, the Board approved a new
strategic plan covering 2015-2020. The
plan includes an updated mission statement
and the core values that guide our work. It
addresses all areas of the Trust’s operation.
With interpretation and the preservation of
our sites highlighted, the Trust has revitalized
and expanded our education programs and
established a restoration resource center.
We renewed our commitment to serve the
broadest public audience by creating new
ADA tours that make our sites accessible
to all. Our new Wright in the Region
tours extend interpretation of our Chicago
sites to other sites in the Midwest. And
our renowned Travel Wright national and
international travel programs extend our
reach to important related sites worldwide.
The loyalty of the Chicago community
to Wright’s local legacy has given us the
foundation and determination to look
forward to the future. I would like to thank
all of our donors, volunteers, members
and friends whose support makes us the
great organization we are. I am deeply
appreciative of my fellow Board members
for their generous service, and to members
of the Trust’s staff led by our President &
CEO, Celeste Adams, all of whom tirelessly
dedicate their energy and talent to the
success of our mission.

MISSION
The mission of the Trust is to engage, educate and inspire the public through interpretation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s design
legacy and preservation of his original sites for future generations.
CORE VALUES
ENGAGEMENT
Engaging a broad and diverse local, regional, national and international audience through a dynamic cultural tourism
program, a comprehensive and interactive website, and consistent marketing and communications initiatives.
EDUCATION
Affirming the contemporary relevance of Wright’s design legacy by educating K-12 students through innovative design
programs that nurture individual vision; by presenting quality adult enrichment programs, national/international travel
programs; and by producing electronic/print publications.
INSPIRATION
Inspiring our audience through powerful aesthetic experiences of authentic Wright sites, preserved to Wright’s original
design vision.
FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Developing the Trust’s resources and maintaining the Trust’s financial stability in order to sustain Wright’s original sites
for future generations and ensure a lasting and secure future for the Trust, supported by strong community and business
relationships and by dynamic Board engagement.
PAGE 4
As we begin to implement the 2015-2020
strategic plan, the Trust this year renewed
its mission to interpret Wright’s design
legacy through new programs for adults,
new Chicago cultural partners, and a new
Education program for youth, families and
teachers.
ENGAGING OUR
AUDIENCE –
INTERPRETATION
PROGRAMS FOR
ADULTS
The Trust’s Thinking into the Future lecture by
architect John Ronan was a keynote event in
Preston Bradley Hall for Chicago’s first
Architectural Biennial at the Cultural Center.
A signature Trust annual program, presented in
partnership with the University of Chicago and
AIA Chicago, this distinguished series marked
its sixth year at the 2015 Architecture Biennial.
Speaking to an audience of over 350, Ronan
focused on Chicago’s built environment and
the challenges to contemporary architects
working within this powerful historical
construct. Shortly after the event, Ronan was
announced as the only Chicago-based finalist
for the Obama Presidential Library.
This year’s community enrichment series
speakers included architect, Norman
Brosterman; architectural historian, Gwen
Sommers-Yant speaking on Wright in Glencoe, a
partnership with the Glencoe Historical Society
celebrating the centennial of Wright’s Ravine
Bluffs; architect and historian, John Waters;
and Planning Supervisor for the Chicago Park
District, Julia Bachrach. Ms. Bachrach’s lecture
on The Prairie Spirit: Jens Jensen and Chicago
was presented in the newly opened auditorium
of the Gordon Parks Arts Hall at the University
of Chicago Laboratory Schools, the Trust’s
partner for this event. A new Robie House
series in partnership with the Seminary Coop
Bookstore featured Oriental Institute Curator,
Jack Green, discussing James Cuno’s book
Who Owns Antiquity in the Robie House living
room.

Expanding our popular website with 500,000
unique annual visitors, the Trust launched
a new online resource: Buildings of Wright’s
Chicago Years, a comprehensive interactive
listing of 147 sites from 1888 through 1911

that includes individual entries and illustrations
for each site. In 2016 the Trust will expand this
resource to include Wright’s work to 1920.
In 2015 the landmark Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) celebrated 25 years and the Trust
partnered with ADA on their Cultural Access
Project to expand access at Chicago’s cultural
attractions. Each Trust site piloted sign language
tours and touch tours for guests who are blind
or with low vision. These pilot programs will be
incorporated as regular offerings at the Trust’s sites
in 2016.
Bradley House, Kankakee, IL
Extending our tours to Wright sites surrounding
Chicago, this year the Trust introduced Wright in
the Region. These day trips to new destinations
included the Harley Bradley House in Kankakee,
IL; Laurent House in Rockford, IL; and SC
Johnson Administration Building and Research
Tower in Racine, WI. In response to the success
of these tours, the Trust will introduce new
destinations in 2016.
Travel Wright, the Trust’s national and
international travel program, also introduced a
new destination this year with a trip to Spain,
where travelers visited Barcelona to see the work
of Wright contemporary Antoni Gaudi and the
1929 Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Pavilion
before continuing to Bilbao to visit Frank Gehry’s
Guggenheim Museum, a brilliant 20th century
descendent of Wright’s 1959 masterpiece.

EDUCATION FOR
YOUTH, FAMILIES
AND TEACHERS
This year the Trust’s Education department,
with a new team of educators, launched a
comprehensive initiative under the guiding
theme Designing a Better World that integrates
design principles into all of the Trust’s
education programs in the coming years. The
Trust’s education programs nurture individual
vision and creativity and align with Common
Core standards.
In 2015 Trust education programs served
over 2,000 kindergarten through 8th grade
students in 32 Chicago area public, private
and charter schools, offering in-school sessions
with Trust educators. Over 2,210 family and
youth audiences participated in Trust design
studios and 40 teachers attended professional
development sessions at the Home and Studio
and Robie House.
In-school sessions are age-specific, align with
STEM curriculum, and include Designing
with Glass: The Art of Geometry; Designing and
Building: My New House; Let’s Make Plans:
PAGE 7
My Neighborhood and City; Design Detectives:
The Wright 3 Tour and Pentomino Studio; and
Designing with Glass: The Art of Geometry and
the Physics of Light. The Education department
also initiated Building Blocks of Architecture
learning kits that can be requested by teachers
for classroom use. Kits available this year are
Froebel Design and Pentomino Design.
The Education department partners each year
with the Oak Park Education Foundation to
offer Art Start, an elementary school program,
and with Oak Park School District 97 to
provide all 4th graders a Home and Studio
tour with classroom preparation and
follow-up.
Family programs at Robie House include
LEGO Architects: Design and Build and Design
Team @ Robie. At the Home and Studio,
Youth Architecture Workshops (Levels I and II)
are offered during the summer and winter
family workshops are offered during the Home
for the Holidays December event.
Speaker Adrian Smith with University of Chicago students
The Education department works with high
school and college interns from local schools
and universities across the country, offering
Architect Adrian Smith, Thinking Into the Future speaker
paid and unpaid working experiences with
Trust mentors throughout the year. Some of
these talented young people join the Trust
volunteer organization as site interpreters and
some eventually join our staff. As the Trust
works to expand our education programs
to reach larger audiences, we also work to
revitalize our organization through integration
of next generation interpreters, educators,
preservationists and historians.
INSPIRATION – A CORE
VALUE THAT PRESERVES
OUR SITES AS UNIQUE
EXPERIENCES
In June 2015, Unity Temple closed to the
public to begin a comprehensive restoration
of the site. The Trust website links visitors
to a film on the restoration produced by
Unity Temple Restoration Foundation. At
Robie House a series of casement doors in
the living room were restored, as fundraising
to complete the final phase of restoration
continues.
Emil Bach House (1915) celebrated its 100th
Anniversary this year with members of the
Bach family returning and a proclamation
from the State of Illinois recognizing the
excellence of its restoration and importance
of its interpretation through public tours and
events. Over 7,000 guests have toured Bach
House since completion of its restoration
when the Trust commenced tours there in
2014.
On March 12 the Trust announced a new
restoration resource center where Trust
members and historic property owners
may access the Trust’s extensive archive of
restoration information and materials from its
award-winning Home and Studio restoration,
Robie House and other sites.
Consultation services include information
on interior and exterior finishes, glass and
furnishings: advice on historic building care
and maintenance; archival samples of paint,
plaster, wood trim, roofing, piping, doors,
masonry, and assistance with researching
original and replacement materials; advice
on products, suppliers and materials; and
access to a network of preservation specialists,
including architects, conservators and
craftspeople.

In conjunction with the opening of the
center, on March 12 and March 26 the
Trust presented two programs on historic
preservation at Unity Temple: Preservation
architects Gunny Harboe and John Eifler,
100 Years: Rehabilitating Bach House and the
Ravine Bluffs Development; and on March 26
Daniel Bluestone and Richard Longstreth,
Frank Lloyd Wright and the Challenge to Historic
Preservation.

Attendance during 2015 at the Trust sites
totaled 136,934—Home and Studio, 88,410;
Robie House, 37,194; Unity Temple, 4,107;
Rookery, 3,822; and Bach House, 3,401.
A STRONG FUTURE
The Trust’s 41st Wright Plus Housewalk
combined original Wright sites in Oak Park
with Coonley House, Stables, and Coach
House in Riverside. For the first time, Ernest
Hemingway’s boyhood home in Oak Park was
included on the walk, and over 2,000 guests
took red trolleys to nine sites throughout
the day. Over 500 volunteers welcomed and
registered guests, coordinated logistics for
the day, and introduced guests to individual
houses.
The Chairman’s Reception at The Rookery,
co-chaired by Lisa and Ray Lewis, surpassed
all previous years' revenue for this fundraiser,
netting $55,700 for the evening. Members
of the Honorary Committee and major
contributors to the event included Ken and
Tammy Barrett, Brian and Yasmina Duwe,
Lamar and Lisa Johnson, T. Kendall and
Patricia Hunt, Gary and Kim McCullough,
John Rafkin and Anita Levin, Graham Rarity,
Don and Karen Rosenwinkel, and Jeff and
Gloria Schwartz. Major corporate sponsors
were Ogilvy & Mather, Radio Flyer Inc.,
KPMG, Sidley Austin LLP, and The Segal
Company.
Annual Fund 2015 also broke all previous
records totaling $131,277, with lead gifts
from Tawani Foundation, Rena and Clyde
Holland, US Bank, Robert Pasin and Muriel
Quinn, Hickory Foundation, Hildner
Family Foundation, T. Kendall Hunt Family
Foundation and Patricia D. Hunt, John Rafkin
and Anita Levin, Sidley Austin Foundation,
PAGE 9
Mary G. and James P. Nelson, Don and Karen
Rosenwinkel, and Westrock.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation, Illinois Department of Economic
Opportunity/Illinois Office of Tourism, Harper
Court Arts Council, and Illinois Arts Council
Agency have awarded generous grants that
enhance our ability to serve our audiences and
our community.
Major gifts to the Robie House Restoration this
year were from Tawani Foundation, Richard
and Mary Gray, and Yoko Ono. To these and all
our donors named in this report we express our
sincere gratitude for their belief in our mission
and confidence in our future.
As we build upon our past and set a course for
the future, the Trust Board, staff and volunteers
are united in determination to perpetuate a
strong organization and preserve our Wright sites
to inspire future generations.
Wright’s Chicago years were the forge that
steeled his backbone as an artist and visionary.
Had Wright not come to Chicago, a progressive
city transformed by extraordinary cultural,
artistic and architectural energy, he might never
have become the great master of 20th century
architecture and design that we recognize today.
The Trust and all of our members, cultural
partners, and constituency are devoted to this
great American legacy built in Chicago and
passed on to the world.

In 2015, 660 volunteers contributed
29,800 hours of service.
They spent 2,520 hours in training
and continuing education activities,
which included interpreter training
for tours at the Home and Studio and
Robie House, specialty tour training,
and attending the Seminar Series
and Enrichment Lectures.
Trust volunteers lead tours, host at
events and assist guests at our sites.
VOLUNTEERING AT THE TRUST
PAGE 26
Trust volunteers are integral to the success of our tours and operations. Volunteers lead site tours, assist with guests, and support special
events and projects. Their commitment allows the Trust to fulfill its mission, and we are grateful for their contribution of time and service.
