Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club P.O. BOX 519, BOBCAYGEON, ONTARIO, CANADA, K0M 1A0 Volume 1 www.twinmountainssc.ca Fall 2009 Fall 2009 Newsletter Welcome to our Fall 2009 Newsletter. The Board of Directors of TMSC feels that it is very important to keep all of our landowners, club members, sponsors and supporters up to date and informed of all club news, changes, and other interesting events. We are also seeking your input, submissions, and photographs. If, at any time, anyone has any material or photographs that you would like to see included in our Newsletter, please feel free to contact Nadene Nicholas at (705) 799-1409 or at [email protected]. A copy of the minutes from our Annual General Meeting, which was held at the clubhouse on Saturday February 21st, 2009 have also been attached to this Newsletter for your information. 2009/2010 Board of Directors The following is a list of the current Board Members, contact numbers, and respective responsibilities: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Landowners Membership Publicity/Events Grooming Signage Driver Training Trails Trail Patrol Website Volunteers Health & Safety Wayne Haagsma (705-738-2333) Larry Hulsmans (705-738-9572) Marlene Jackson (705-738-9838) Marlene Jackson & Reanne Embury (705-738-9074) Larry Hulsmans Wayne Haagsma Nadene Nicholas (705-799-1409) Bob Simpson (705-793-2626) Jim Thomas (705-799-1409) Tim Embury (709-738-9074) Laverne Clark (705-341-3221) Wayne Haagsma (705-738-2333) Nadene Nicholas Larry Hulsmans Mike Klein (705-738-2613) 1 Another Fantastic Snowmobile Season!!!!! Another great year of excellent trails was enjoyed by sledders during the 2008/2009 season, although we did have several weather interruptions that caused some problem areas on our trails. We were able to open trails in mid December, but then had to limit them in January, re-open them again, only to have an unusual February, receiving little snow, and some rain. As of the second week of March, we still had a good trail base, but had received inadequate amounts of new snow for good lubrication for sled sliders to run safely. We had to close gates on three trails on March 7, 2009 due to some ATV riders who, thinking that our sledding season was over, began using them. We at TMSC are pleased to announce that new landowners have granted us permission to reopen the part of the Cedar Rapids Trail (#410) that has been closed for approximately six years. We certainly appreciate their generous offer, as we really missed that section which allows us to join up to the Blue Camp Trail (# 435) and on to the east side, and also to Oak Shores. We no longer include Richie's Trail (# 455) on our map as there doesn't seem to be anyway to reach an agreement on the use of that trail. This is a great loss to TMSC in both total kilometres of trail, and a lot of permit dollars and leg work will be required to re-route this trail. We are working with the Can Council of Snowmobiles and the Nat Trail Coalition to receive government funding to improve the Loom Lake Trail (# 495), as well as finish spreading some fine material on the new section of E 108 that we moved last year. The local ATV Club (the Kawartha ATV Association or KATVA) from Lindsay has been keeping the trails on Crown land clear of fallen trees and picking loose stones. They have also contributed to our trail repairs and have done a great job in patrolling them as well. We have noticed a tremendous decrease in Landowners' reports of renegade ATV's on their land. The # 400 Trail is almost entirely on private land and we installed 2 gates at different locations last year, however there still seemed to be a lot of activity on this trail. This year the Kawartha ATV Association has kept this trail to almost no ATV traffic at all. We certainly appreciate this, and are pleased to report grass and weeds are growing on the trail. This Club has proven they can and will do their patrolling and controlling of our trails as they had promised! LANDOWNERS AND VOLUNTEERS TMSC would like to take this opportunity to thank our Landowners for their kindness and use of their land for our trails, so that we in turn could provide a great source of winter activity and fun for all of our riders. 2 I must congratulate four of our landowners who received Petro-Can gift cards in the OFSC gas draws. Our lucky winners were Bob Anderson, Jim Grant, Wayne Kimble and Ken & Katie McIlmoyle. We would also like to thank our permit outlets for their time and work while selling permits, handing out maps and giving trail information throughout the season. We also congratulate Laverne Clark, our Trail Co-ordinator, for winning the District # 2 Volunteer of the Year Award. Also, many thanks to all other volunteers who helped us with trail work, permit outlets, and in many other ways during the past winter. TMSC hopes everyone had a happy and safe summer and looks forward to your continued support and membership again this coming season. Larry Hulsmans Vice President Landowner Coordinator Volunteer Coordinator Club News DISTRICT 2 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR LAVERNE CLARK Laverne Clark is a valued and dedicated member of the Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club. Laverne came to TMSC 5 years ago, looking to volunteer his time by doing trail work. Since that time, he has been a dedicated volunteer, going above and beyond the realm of many other volunteers. Not only is Laverne very active on the trails, he doesn’t hesitate to take on whatever task needs attention. Trail work, brushing, signage, construction work, barbequing and manning information booths are just some of the tasks that Laverne performs, and these are just the ones the Club knows about. Laverne unselfishly spends countless hours doing 3 the “little” things that need to be done without anyone realizing it. He doesn’t seek recognition, or attention, he just goes out and does what needs to be done. No hoopla and no fanfare. That is his nature. Laverne is a big, burly man, who is a teddy bear at heart. He shares his passion for the outdoors with all who are around him, and he is a wonderful ambassador for the sport of snowmobiling, and more importantly, a true role model for all of our Club volunteers. He acts as a mentor to the more junior volunteers that have come on board. Laverne is continuously promoting snowmobiling, and actively searches for and recruits new volunteers. His generosity extends beyond the Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club, with involvement in other recreational outdoor clubs. His efforts on both fronts have resulted in new members and volunteers for Twin Mountains. Everyone who knows Laverne enjoys his company, and actively seeks to spend time with him, and any time spent with Laverne is generally outdoors, on a trail, with chainsaw in hand. This is a win-win situation for everyone, and the benefits to the Club as a whole are numerous. Laverne Clark is irreplaceable as a member of Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club, as a role model, and as a great friend. He gives his all at the drop of a hat, and seeks nothing in return. Any Club, regardless of interest, should be as fortunate as the Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club is to have such an asset. TMSC & KATVA TEAM UP AT BOBCAYGEON MIDNIGHT MADNESS TMSC and KATVA teamed up at Bobcaygeon Midnight Madness held on August 1st, 2009. Members were on hand to promote the sports of snowmobiling and ATVing. Club merchandise was available for purchase, and information packages and maps were handed out to the public. 4 YAMAFEST 2009 TMSC, in conjunction with MCGREGOR SPORTSLINE, hosted Yamafest 2009 at the clubhouse on Bass Lake Road, on January 31st, 2009. We had a fantastic turn out, and had twice as many riders as last year. Many different models were on hand, and it was a great chance to try different machines. A fantastic chili and barbeque lunch was served compliments of McGregor Sportsline, and the TMSC 50/50 draw was won by Jane Landriault of Peterborough, who stopped by the club while out for a ride with her son. Congratulations Jane, and thanks for supporting TMSC. We would like to thank MCGREGOR SPORTSLINE for hosting this event, and for the generous donation to the club. We are grateful for your continued support. Look for YAMAFEST again this season on a date to be announced. The date for this event will be posted on our new website. COMING EVENTS DRIVER TRAINING We had another great turnout for our Driver Training program and we thank our volunteers for all of the hard work that went into putting this training together. We would also like to thank CAYGEON LANES for donating the meeting room for this training. Your support is greatly appreciated by all. We will be holding Driver Training sessions again this winter, on a date to be announced. The dates for the training and registration information will be posted on our new website well in advance of the training sessions, so please check frequently. LANDOWNER AND VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT Last year’s Landowner Appreciation night was a huge success, and we have scheduled this year’s event for Saturday, November 28th, 2009 at Caygeon Lanes. Social hour: 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Dinner: 7:00 pm. Once again, we hope to see all of our landowners and volunteers out for an enjoyable evening and fantastic food and prizes. 5 SHOW AND EVENTS Look for members of Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club at the following show and events: • • • • The Bobcaygeon Fall Fair, Friday and Saturday October 2nd and 3rd, 2009 The Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV and Powersports Show at the Toronto International Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday October 16th, 17th and 18th, 2009 Kawartha Sledarama Snowmobile Show, Sunday November 22nd, 2009 at the Morrow Building, Peterborough, Ontario TMSC AGM Saturday February 20th, 2010 at the Clubhouse on Bass Lake Road. Everything you need to know can now be found on-line. Check it out!!!! PERMIT SALES The price of permits has gone up this season. Permits purchased prior to December 1st, 2009 will be at a cost of $200 each. Permits purchased after December 1st will go up to $250 each. As a member of District 2, TMSC volunteers will be out at various Powersport and Vendor locations on weekends in November, in order to make your early permit purchase easier. Permits will also be available at our vendor locations around the region starting sometime in September. Antique Snowmobile permits will also be available for machines that are 15 years and older. These permits will be for sale at one central location only, and it appears that the location for District 2 is in Havelock. These permits will be available at a discounted rate. Restrictions prevent the selling of permits over the internet, so we have also included a permit order form with this newsletter. You can simply fill in the permit order form and indicate payment method and mail it back to TMSC at 2600 Bass Lake Road, P.O. Box 519, Bobcaygeon, Ontario, K0M 1A0, or you can fax the completed order form to: 705731-0391 We will ensure that your permit arrives via mail in a timely fashion. 6 Your continued support of TMSC and District 2 is greatly appreciated, and your support is directly reflected in the quality and conditions of our trails. Remember to buy where you ride, as the permit dollars go to the local snowmobile clubs. Wayne greeted all who attended and introduced the members of the board in attendance. Wayne offered an overview of this season: • On April 1st 2008, the TMSC groomer garage caved in. Robert Simpson acted as our contractor and organized the volunteers to put up a brand new building – better than before. We have lots of space and this building will not fall down! We are very fortunate that our insurance covered virtually all of the costs to rebuild. • Yamafest was, once again, held at our club and run by McGregor Sportsline. It was an even bigger success than last year’s event. • Last AGM, the subject of getting the snowmobile trail off the cottagers’ road along Bass Lane, was raised. This trail is E-108, a top trail, and therefore a high priority for OFSC. A grant was applied for and the trail was successfully “twinned” this season. So you see, it is important to come to our AGM and state your interest. We do listen. Stan Webb made the comment that the cottagers are very happy with the result. Minutes from the last AGM were read. Phil McGuire moved that they be adopted as read. Ted Pollock seconded and all approved. Business Arising from the Minutes • Stan Webb asked about the anticipated mining of vermiculite. It does not appear to have happened in the last year. Mike Klein, resident on Bass Lake Road, commented that the mining might not go ahead due to concerns over a possible carcinogen. • No negative feedback was received from our landowners about no longer being able to give them permits. We did not lose any landowners, for which we are grateful. Definitely, our communication to the landowners on the subject was crucial in helping them understand that decision was out of our control. TMSC is trying to work with the ATV clubs. Kawartha ATV members, many of them also 9 our members, are helping to maintain our trails. They are doing the right things to grow and be successful, such as putting in place insurance and establishing land use agreements with landowners. Treasurer’s Report – Marlene Jackson • As of February 19th our accounts total $41,469.03 • Interest earned in 2008 (T5) was $205.10. • Cost of permit this year was $72.56 down from $91.38 last season. • Expect to receive: $27,400 $20,000 for the building insurance $2,100 for demolition costs $3,500 fuel subsidy through District from OFSC $1,800 District funds • Expect to pay: $19,000 $11,800 to OFSC if we sell all permits we have purchased $5,000 miscellaneous expenses $2,200 accountants’ fees • Groomer garage insurance was $42,000 with possible extra of $2,100 for demolition expenses. Actual expenses were $42,400 in materials and $3,000 in demo expenses. • Trail subsidy from OFSC for E-108 top trail, twinning trail and cottagers’ road at Bass Lane - $32,000 paid directly to Buckhorn Sand and Gravel. • Sold Bobcat - $4,500 with an eye to purchasing a 4X4 next season. • Purchased new cell phones with 10/4 and GPS capability to facilitate better communication and safety on the trails for groomer operators and volunteers. • Mike Klein moved to accept the Treasurer’s report. Tim Embury seconded and all approved. Membership – Wayne Haagsma • Permit sales are up this year. The sales of permits for all of last season were 651. This season, we had 628 before December 1st and to date we have 668. More sales will be recorded as all of the outlets turn in their sales. • Many thanks to the vendors who have supported us year after year. They do a lot of work filling out and submitting the permit applications. Election of Officers – Wayne Haagsma • Board member Gary Gurzi passed away, suddenly, last year. Gary was really looking forward to taking over Driver Training. We all miss him. • The terms of the following five board members are up as of this meeting: Ron Storms, Mark Collins, Wayne Haagsma, Larry Hulsmans, and Laverne Clark. Nominations: o Laverne Clark nominated Jim Thomas. Marlene Jackson seconded. o Marlene Jackson nominated Wayne Haagsma. Ted Pollock seconded. o Wayne Haagsma nominated Larry Hulsmans. Phil McGuire seconded. o Nadene Nicholas nominated Laverne Clark. Tim Embury seconded. o Tim Embury nominated Mike Klein. Nadene Nicholas seconded. 10 • o All agreed to stand. Ted Pollock moved to close the nominations. Bob Leach seconded. Carried. All of the nominees were acclaimed. Trails – Wayne • We congratulate Larry for his hard work and organization on the twinning of E108. • Our next priority is to improve the Loom Lake Trail, which is currently also part of E-108. • We also need to work to get the trail off Bass Lake road, north of the bridge, as much as possible. This is a safety concern as more and more people are wintering up there. • We would also like to enhance the Town Trail and Ted Pollock noted that the trail north of Bessie Ave needs culverts in at least two spots. Publicity and Events – Nadene • The Landowner/Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was a big success. Eighty to ninety people attended and Caygeon Lanes provided a wonderful dinner. • Yamafest drew 140 riders this year. A big improvement over last year. We fired up the barbeque and everyone had a good time. • We had permits in time to sell them at the Bobcaygeon Fair this year and as usual we sold quite a few permits at Sled-O-Rama in Peterborough. • We were able to get out two newsletters this season. And we are planning a brand new website for next year. Driver Training • Tim Embury has qualified to become a Driver Training Instructor. He will take over from Bob Leach next season. • This season Bob and Tim trained 22 kids in two sessions – November and December. • Caygeon lanes, once again, generously allowed us the use of the room for the training. Many thanks to Caygeon Lanes for their continuing support. New Business • The Alcohol Policy was reviewed. Marlene Jackson moved to accept the Alcohol Policy as is, unchanged. Jim Thomas seconded. Carried. Don Wilcox suggested signage in the clubhouse and groomer garage. Mike Klein will take charge of the Alcohol Policy under the Health and Safety post. • Bob Leach moved to replace wording in by-laws from “OFSC trail permit” to “snowmobile trail permit”. Phil McGuire seconded. Carried. • Ted Pollock noted many snowmobile trailers parked at the Lakes Church, which is private property. We will talk to church representatives to determine if this trespassing. • Tim Embury suggested that we try to get the trail off the Quarry Road for safety reasons. Larry will look into it. Laverne Clark moved to close the meeting. Stan Webb seconded and the meeting adjourned. 11 Thank you to this year’s Newsletter Sponsor, Birch Point Marina, for their generous support!!
