PRESTON REMEMBERS
Preston Remembers is a Heritage Lottery Funded partnership
project centred on the restoration of the First World War Cenotaph outside the Harris Museum in Preston.
The project consists of two main strands, firstly the building restoration of
the Cenotaph that will result in an unveiling ceremony in June 2014 and
secondly a 3 year programme of activity that aims to develop awareness
and understanding of the memorial and the history of Preston during and
after the First World War.
To start the program of activity, on 23rd and 24th of November 2013,
UCLAN are hosting a conference concerned with investigating Lancashire’s
role in WW1. The ‘Finding Identities’ conference will include both keynote
speakers, and opportunities to visit the Harris Museum and the newly
restored Preston Cenotaph; the recently opened First World War gallery in
the Museum of Lancashire and the Lancashire Infantry Museum at Fulwood
Barracks.
You can find more about the conference here http://www.uclan.ac.uk/conference_events/finding_identities_lancashire_first_world_war.php
The ‘Cenotaph Challenge’ is also a significant part of Preston Remembers.
We’re looking to work with local communities to audit, maintain, research
and record memorials across the city. As stated by the War Memorials
Trust, such local memorials are important because they act as ‘historical
touchstones, linking the past to the present and enabling people to remember and respect the sacrifice of those who died, fought, participated or
were affected by conflict’.
If you would like to be involved, as a volunteer on the project, or you have
information about a memorial in Preston, please contact Claire Selby (Volunteer Co-ordinator) on [email protected] pt Laura Jamieson (Project
Co-ordinator) on [email protected]
More information can be found on the project website www.prestonremembers.org.uk

ART
Hanover Project
A PRIORI: AN ALUMNI
SHOW The exhibition brings
together a group of artists
who have studied Fine
Art at UCLan some time
over the last fifteen years.
Stuart Edmundson, Claire
Hope, Craig Atkinson and
Nicola Ellis are four artists
who have very different
approaches to making work,
and their only relationship
in many ways is their
alumni status. This variety
demonstrates the breadth
and diversity of the Fine
Art course and the artists
it produces. All the works
in the show represent
recent developments for
each artist, reinforcing
the function of Hanover
Project as a place of
experimentation, and
as a testing ground
for both students and
artists. The artists in A
Priori are at different
stages in their careers,
yet they have all made a
significant contribution
to the development of
contemporary art in
the North of England
and beyond.

interest in the conflict has
grown - as have debates
over local identities,
recruitment, the war effort,
memorialisation, and the
historical sources. As home
to many Pals battalions,
and a focus of Lord Derby’s
recruitment efforts,
Lancashire is arguably at
the heart of these matters.
Moreover as the result of
the successful Preston City
Council bid to refurbish
the town memorial, and
extensive new research into
rarely seen film, new and
fascinating evidence of the
war and its impact is now
coming to light. Of interest
to academic researchers,
professionals in the
heritage and educational
sectors and the interested
amateur, Finding Identities
will include both keynote
speakers, and opportunities
to visit the Harris Museum

Preston Cenotaph; the
