We are excited and grateful for the diverse display of collector cars and vintage motorcycles selected for this year’s event. Over the past four years we have had the opportunity to showcase a number of world class vehicles, from the Porsche 953 prototype 911 sent to us from the Porsche museum in Stuttgart to the 2012 Concorso Villa D’ Este best in show 33 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport at Chernobio on lake Como in Italy. The 1928 Isotta Fraschini 8A SS from Pennsylvania and the 1936 Lagonda that won best in class at Pebble Beach shown at the first Crescent Beach Concours d’elegance in 2011. The Crescent Beach Concours d’Elegance continues to be a fabulous gathering of special vehicles at a Super-natural venue on the ocean just a short drive from Vancouver, one of the most beautiful cities in North America. The Crescent Beach Concours d’Elegance is known for showing unique, rare, collectible and historically significant vehicles including race cars, and this year is no exception. Travelling from Sonoita Arizona, Larry and Jan Pfitzenmaier will be showing their 1959 Watson Indy Roadster. This vehicle placed 2nd in the 1959 Indy 500 and is still vintage raced today. More information on the Watson Indy Roadster can be found further on in this program. The organising committee has worked incorporating new ideas to make this event unique and interesting every year. Over fifty volunteers ensure an enjoyable day for all of our participants. We again thank the City of Surrey for their support as well as all of our sponsors who, for the past five years, ensure the ongoing success of the Crescent Beach Concours D’Elegance. Enjoy! Brad Pelling Chairman Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 CRESCENT BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE Concours d’Elegance, in French, means ‘competition of elegance’. Before the invention of the automobile, it was customary to take a Sunday carriage drive in the park. Carriages, horses and owners were decorated and dressed elegantly. When cars arrived, this became the ‘Concours d’Elegance’ which started in Paris and Berlin in 1898. The Concours became a place where people of average means could view the displays of the very rich. Expensive cars were presented with the latest fashions of couturiers like Chanel. The Concours, an elegant car show, reached its peak in 1939, interrupted by World War II and revived in the early 1950’s with the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In most concours, cars and motorcycles are grouped by style or make and undergo precise judging to determine best in class. Cars are invited by a selection committee to accurately represent a style, theme, marque or special display. Each car was hand built. The car gets its name from two-time CART open-wheel racing champion, Alex Zanardi. With only 50 made and each one with its own unique numbered plaque, this car is sought after worldwide. Based on the Japanese exclusive Type-S NSX, the hand-built Zanardi NSX is 149 pounds lighter - and much faster than the typical Acura NSX. The body is aluminum weighing just over 460 lbs. It was the first production car to use titanium connecting rods. The 3 litre DOHC V6 engine is mounted mid ship and is coupled with a six speed manual transmission. These 50 exclusive cars featured unique interior styling with red stitching as well as some exterior aerodynamic changes. Built with weight reduction in mind, the Zanardi Edition comes with lightweight BBS-manufactured alloy wheels, a titanium shift knob, lighter battery, and manual rack-and-pinion steering. All Zanardi Edition NSX models share the same Formula Red exterior paint. It is powered by a 3.2 liter, 8000 RPM DOHC 24-valve, VTEC V-6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 224 lbs-ft of torque. Its racetrack-tuned suspension delivers outstanding handling control. Motor Trend magazine considers it to be the finest ‘Supercar’ built during the 1990’s era. OWNED BY JOHN & KOKO CARLSON Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 1959 WATSON INDY ROADSTER “Simoniz Special #16” A Brief History The 1959 Simoniz Special #16 is the fifth of 23 Indy Roadsters built by A.J. Watson from 1956 through1963, and one of only two built for the 1959 racing season. It raced on the USAC Championship Trail for five consecutive years at Indy, Milwaukee and Trenton, never failing to qualify for the Indy 500. It was first owned by Miami investment banker and worldclass racing enthusiast, Lindsey Hopkins. On April 4, 1959, the brand new Simoniz Special, with its 400+ horsepower Offenhauser engine under the hood and Jim Rathmann at the wheel, won two races at the new Daytona International Speedway, setting a world closed-course race speed record of 170.261 MPH, and becoming the only championship car to win two USAC sanctioned races on the same day. Several weeks later Jim finished second in the 1959 Indy 500 after many laps of great racing with the eventual winner, Rodger Ward, who happened to be driving A.J. Watson’s other new 1959 car. The great Tony Bettenhausen drove his last Indy 500 in the Simoniz Special in 1960 with the car configured as the Dowgard Special #2. During the next several years the car was also driven by Dick Rathmann, A.J. Foyt, Jim Hurtubise, Wayne Weiler, Gene Hartley, Eddie Johnson and others. In 1964 it was driven to many top three finishes on the IMCA circuit by Dick Good, including a win at the Little 500 in Anderson, Indiana. The car was never raced after 1964, thus retaining its historical integrity and avoiding the continuous modifications that destroyed the identity of so many great American race cars. Restored 1989-1992 and owned by Larry and Jan Pfitzenmaier since 1991, the Simoniz Special won Best of Class and the Tony Hulman Cup at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Best Presentation and Performance at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, was the featured Indy Roadster at the Daytona Indy Roadster Reunion and the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, won Best of Class at the Desert Classic Concours, Best of Class and the Directors’ Award at the Santa Fe Concorso, and Best of Class at the Arizona Concours. The car was featured on the cover and in a seven-page article in the May/June 2009 “Indy Centennial” issue of Vintage Motorsport magazine. Larry’s greatest enjoyment comes when driving the car on the vintage racing circuit where during the past 23 years he has turned many laps at Loudon, Indy, Michigan, Fontana, Charlotte, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Darlington, Texas and Daytona. “Nothing can match coming off turn four, sitting in the same seat my boyhood heroes sat in during the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing’, gazing down that long roadster hood, hard on the gas and wheel-to-wheel with one or two other great vintage race cars. If you were a kid in the late ‘50s, and if you spent every Memorial Day with Sid Collins, the radio ‘Voice of the 500’, glued to your ear, it doesn’t get much better than that!” Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 2015 Entrants: A brief selection of entrants’ cars and motorbikes follows: Class 1 Early Ford V-8 (32-54) 1947 FORD CONVERTIBLE I have owned this car for 38 years. It was built from a 100% rust free body with a 1970 Chev 350 cu in V8, full synchro three speed column shift. It has been on the road since 1986 after winning best in class at the expo 86 car-show in Vancouver. It was built to reflect a mildly modified car that would have been built in the early sixties. This car was painted by Sandy Morita 33 years ago. It now has approx. forty thousand miles on it and has never been on a trailer. Class 2 AC & Bristol & British Sports to ‘67 1964 AUSTIN HEALEY BJ8 3000 MKLLL The Austin-Healey 3000 was introduced in 1959, replacing the Austin-Healey 100-6. The 3000 Mark III was launched in October 1963, and remained in production until the end of 1967, when manufacture of Austin-Healeys ceased. Designated the BJ8, the 2+2 Mark III was the most powerful and luxurious of the big Healeys, with a standard walnut-veneer dash, wind-up windows, and a 150 hp (112 kW) engine. Added power came from a new camshaft and valve springs, twin SU 2” HD8 carburettors, and a new exhaust system design. Servoassisted brakes were also standard. In May 1964 the Phase II version of the Mark III was released, which gained ground clearance through a modified rear chassis. In March 1965 the car received separate indicators. A total of 17,712 Mark IIIs were made Class 3 G.M. (1950 to 1970) 1957 CHEVROLET - BEL AIR My family acquired this car in 2002 and didn’t do anything with it. Was a California car with no rust built in Oakland California. In 2012 I started the restoration working on all mechanicals and some of the interior and finishing. This colour is Dusk Pearl, a very rare and unique colour for this year, hence the nickname for this car. Class 4 Shelby 1969 SHELBY GT 350 This was the last year of production for the vintage Shelby mustangs. There were 935 units of the GT 350 fastback produced. This one was sold from FOGG MOTORS and driven for many years and many, many miles. Speedometer reading at this time is 446,615 miles. And yes it has had snow tires on. Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 Class 5 Jaguar (post war) 1961 JAGUAR MK IX This car was purchased in B.C. and while it was driven for the first few years, it went into storage for approximately 30 years. It was then sold to a person in the movie industry. This persons wife could not handle the reliability issues that the car had, and it was then sold to a local photographer who drove the car briefly, but was seldom in town long enough to maintain it or drive it. This person approached me while I had my 1969 E-type on a set for a movie he was filming, and told me of the car. A few years later I viewed the car in what, by then, was rather sad condition. After convincing my wife Carol that I could restore it and turn it into something of value, a deal was made and we bought the car. The main reason the car was worth restoring was the low mileage on the drive train, the original leather seats, and the woodwork was in good condition. 1969 JAGUAR XKE The E-Type was developed as a British sports car, based largely on the very successful D-Type racer which won the leMans 24 hour a number of times in the ‘50s. The E-type was manufactured from ‘61 to the early ‘70s. Even Enzo Ferrari stated that it was one of the most beautiful cars ever designed. Class 6 Corvette (1963 to 1972) 1967 CHEVROLET – CORVETTE The Chevrolet Corvette also known as the Corvette Stingray, is a sports car produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for the 1963-1967 model years. The Stingray was lauded in the automotive press almost unanimously for its handling, road adhesion and sheer power. This 1967 coupe features a 427 cubic inch 400 horse power engine with tri-power and a 4 speed transmission. The original owner purchased the car new in May of 1967 from Mander Chev Olds in North Vancouver. The current owners bought the car in 1976. Class 7 Collector Motorcycles 1926 PARAGON-VILLIERS Terry Frounfelker rescued this rare and unusual motorcycle from a Vancouver basement where it laid dormant for nearly eighty years. The components of this well-preserved motorcycle were manufactured in England and assembled in Vancouver. Terry says that it did not take much to get it going: a little cleaning and some lubrication, new tires and some minor work on the ignition system got it to a running state. Terry says that it is not the kind of bike that you want to ride any great distance in modern traffic, but it is great fun to ride around the neighbourhood. Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 1971 NORTON 750 COMMANDO ROADSTER Gil Yarrow, the 83 year old owner, restorer and rider of this classic motorcycle recently completed an 11,000 km round trip to the International Norton Owners Association rally in North Carolina on this motorcycle. Apart from the failure of an easily replaced modern electrical component, the bike was trouble-free for the entire trip. Gil took three prestigious awards at this rally: first place in the Commando Roadster category, longest distance ridden to the rally and oldest rider. Gil says that the Norton is a pleasure to ride on long distance trips. It handles well, has excellent brakes and the powerful engine enables sustained speeds of over 110 km/hr. Class 8 Muscle Cars 1971 CHEVROLET EL CAMINO GM documented rare 454 LS6 M22 highly optioned one of one, and one of six produced for Canada. Car has travelled the world, feature in magazines. Class 10 – Classics 1935 CHRYSLER AIRFLOW - IMPERIAL COUPE The Chrysler Airflows were produced from 1934 through 1937. The first car to utilize wind tunnel testing to improve aerodynamics (along with more than one hundred other claimed ‘firsts’), the Airflow was an engineering breakthrough - and a sales flop. Automatic overdrive, moving the rear seat passengers twenty inches ahead of the rear axle for a more comfortable ride and gobs of art deco ornamentation did not overcome the abundant curves and somewhat snub nose in an era where a long, square hood implied power and prestige. Approximately 150 C2 Imperial Coupes were produced in 1935, and five are known to exist. The car rides on a 128” wheelbase and is motivated by a 323 cubic inch straight eight engine. With the automatic overdrive (releasing the accelerator pedal at above approximately 37 mph results in overdrive engagement), the Airflow achieved a sustained 97 mph at Bonneville in 1934 Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 Our Sponsors… Special Thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible. More at www.alexhouse.net Crescent Beach Concours d’ Elegance 5 September 2015 BEECHER PLACE Beecher Place, at 12160 Beecher Street in Crescent Beach, is a reception space that offers a panoramic view, picture windows and a wrap-around balcony. Beecher Place is owned by the City of Surrey and administered by Alexandra Neighbourhood House. The site for the Crescent Beach Concours d’Elegance Friday night reception since 2011, it offers a breathtaking view of Boundary Bay, the Gulf Islands and some of the San Juan Islands. The design of the building gives the impression of being on the prow deck of a sailing ship. It is literally only steps from the beach and is surrounded by small shops and residences (some of which began as summer beach cottages almost 100 years ago). Crescent Beach itself dates back to 1909, when development of the Great Northern Railway first made the beach easily accessible to the public. Permanent dikes were erected in 1913, making it possible to begin the building of the cottages, some magnificent heritage homes and the development of the area as a resort destination. ‘Swallow Hollow’, one of the original heritage homes in the area, is the judges’ headquarters for the event. BLACKIE SPIT PARK Blackie Spit has provided us with a spectacular event background for very special cars and motorcycles, but also brings a piece of British Columbia archaeological and First Nations history. The unique glass awards we use, from local glassmaker Patrick Symonds of PS Designs, reflect that history. The area was the pre-colonial location of a temporary summer camp for initially the Snokomish and then Semiahmoo First Nations peoples. The mudflats were good places to dig clams, the shells of which make up shell deposits, or ‘middens’ several metres deep, buried with the charcoal and fire-cracked rock that indicate cooking sites. A midden is formed by years of discarding clamshells, fish bones, cooking stones and broken tools. Arrowheads and jade are still occasionally found in the Spit area. In 1946, a burial cairn with a chief ’s skeleton was found, dating to before the birth of Christ. One of the central features on our show field is a large tree growing up from a large depression in the ground. This depression was the site of a native pit-house, which fell in over the years. A pit-house was a shelter made by digging a hollow into the ground and building a roof over it, supported by posts. Today Blackie Spit is a nature area bordered by Thunder and Mud Bays. The sandy spit is used as an important stop for migrating birds and wintering waterfowl. The sand bars shelter harbour seals and their pups in season. Around the park are walking trails, the Dunsmuir Community Garden, an astoundingly delicious gelato shop, beautiful homes a sailing marina, tennis court and bed and breakfast facilities.
