Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a literacy program offered to every child in Anson County from birth to
age five which provides a book by mail monthly. There are currently 1150 children registered for the program.
12,560 books were mailed to children in 2013-14. A total of 3096 children have participated in this program since
2006 when it started in Anson County.

Raising a Reader participants bring home a sturdy red bag filled with four high-quality children’s books weekly.
There are currently 617 three, four and five year old children in the Raising a Reader program including all Kindergarten children in the county.

Reach Out and Read doctors prescribe books, encourage families to read together and give books to children during regular pediatric checkups. 664 books were distributed to 256 children through the Reach Out and Read Program in Anson County in 2013-14.

Motheread classes help parents improve their reading skills and encourage them to increase the amount of time
spent reading to their children.

Family Support provides free distributions for needy families in Anson County. 12,000 food packages; 1,120 nonfood packages such as diapers and wipes; and 3,751 books were distributed to children and families in 2013-14.

Child Passenger Safety Seat Permanent Checking Station provides car seat inspections by nationally certified
child passenger safety technicians for parents of preschool children and provides car seats for $15 for needy families. 126 car seats were inspected in 2013-14 by the Permanent Checking Station.

NC Pre-Kindergarten provides free, high quality child care for qualifying children who are four years of age before August 31. There are currently 170 children enrolled in the NC Pre-Kindergarten program in Anson County
at four child care facilities.

Nurse-Family Partnerships (NFP) is a research based intensive home visitation program for low income, first
time mothers in Anson County which is planned for the 2015-16 year. Mothers will enter the program when they
are pregnant and continue until the child is two years old.

Child Care Subsidy and Enhancement Program provided 101 needy families with subsidy for their children to
attend high quality child care in 2013-14. The program also provided quality enhancement bonuses to 25 child
care facilities with 4 or 5 stars to maintain high quality care.

Child Care Services promotes awareness of young children’s issues in the community, provides training and assistance to child care providers and delivers developmentally appropriate materials to child care facilities.

Early Childhood Resource Center (ECRC) provides child care providers, parents and community members with
over 6,000 resources to increase the quality of early childhood experiences. There were over 6,000 ECRC checkouts to 350 active members in 2013-14.

Education Support Program awards monetary incentives to early childhood professionals who increase their education levels. 18 child care providers at 10 facilities serving 263 children received bonuses in 2013-14.

Shape NC focuses on increasing knowledge of nutrition and physical activity among young children, their families
and their teachers in child care with the goal of decreasing obesity in young children.

Morgan’s Mom Writes: “I recently read an article online called “Why
are Stories Important for Children?” It tells us that reading is relaxing for
children and builds children’s imagination and vocabulary. Another reason the article gives for reading to children really made me think of my
own family. The article says that stories are useful for teaching children
complex ideas and emotions. Stories help explain traumatic events that
cause strong emotions such as grief. Fictional stories based on real life
events help children deal with their own personal struggles and experi-
ences. The best thing about learning from stories is that the process is natural. The child is learning from simply listening to the story rather than
from lecturing.
After Morgan passed away and while I was pregnant again, a local group
for bereaved parents sent me

the book, Someone Came Before You. The book lovingly
explains to a child that before
they were born, there was another child who passed away. Reading that
book to our second child, one-year-old Cason, is a way for me to teach
him about his sister, Morgan, who passed away before he was born. Just as
the article says, reading it to him is an easy, natural way for him to understand his sister. It’s much better than trying to explain who she was and her passing to a one-year-old.
Thankfully, most children do not live with situations as extreme as the death
of a sibling. However, there are many life events and emotions that are confusing for young children. Maybe they are going to have a new baby in their
family. Maybe their parents are getting a divorce. Maybe they are afraid to
go to school on the first day. Maybe they are being picked on by their friends.
Maybe their father or mother lost their job. Maybe they are moving. Books
can help them understand these feelings. The characters become their friends
and they empathize with them. Then the child understands better how to
deal with the situations or emotions in his own life.
I hope you will help provide all children in Anson County with the chance to
feel, to learn and to understand from stories read to them. It is my hope that
you will “Sponsor a Child for Morgan” to celebrate her life and to provide
books for a very deserving young child in Anson County.
