Dust Clouds May Exist
Turn on ‘Dust Clouds May Exist,’ the debut album by Creature Automatic, and hear something familiar
and something completely new. This is pop music that makes pop music strange again. At its core, ‘Dust
Clouds May Exist’ is classic songwriting: flawlessly crafted, featuring catchy hooks and memorable riffs,
exuberant and melancholy. But it’s also an experimental opus, with Lee playing some of the fabulously
unusual instruments he’s become known for: mellotrons, crumhorns, and portatif organ alongside the usual
guitars, drums, and piano. For fans of Brian Eno’s early songs, Robert Wyatt, Richard Youngs, and raucous
experimentation.

Carousel
Jerry Paper is the sonic caricature of New York-based musician Lucas Nathan. Brought into the world after
Nathan’s previous, more abstract projects dissolved into the ether, Jerry Paper represents a cartoonish
vision of Self materialized through Jerry’s bizarre vision of pop music. Nathan’s latest full-length under
the Jerry Paper moniker, Carousel, combines his fascination with synthetic reproductions of “real” instruments with his own brand of philosophical meditations. The album furthers the effort to make “goofy”
sounds into “serious” music through the juxtaposition of idiosyncratic lyrics, sounds, and structures within
the “grammar” of pop music. That being said, the album is much more than the sum of it’s parts. Like his
other releases, Carousel is meant to be taken not so much song-by-song but as a complete piece. Weaving through themes of greed, corruption, waste, impermanence, and belief, the listener is presented with a
world of piggies, cockroaches, and garbage people set to a soundtrack of quasi-orchestral synth madness,
a kind of saccharine sheen that you’re not sure is cleanliness or grease; all you can be sure of is that you’re
riding out Jerry’s trip.

Three Eps, 2012-2014
Dinner is the alias for Danish singer and producer Anders Rhedin. Since 2012, Dinner has released two EPs
(Girl and You Are Like LA) and a guided meditation tape. This Fall, in collaboration with Texas label Red Eye
Transit, we will be releasing his latest effort Oui!, a four-track EP that serves as a powerful introduction to this
idiosyncratic musician. Dinner’s songs seem to be inspired by his own life - in the lyrics you find references
to cities, parties and girls (the latter sometimes referred to as the “divine feminine”). Dinner himself claims
that “All the songs are about death and transcendence.”

Rosy Maze
A sanguine dream of McCartney pop, Brazilian bossa nova, 1960s movie soundtrack sparkle and stoned
Beach Boys baroque melodies, Rosy Maze is the latest album from cult Toronto troubadour Chris A. Cummings. Known as Mantler since 2000, this is the first record for Cummings under his new moniker Marker
Starling. Rosy Maze was written mostly in the late 2000s “in my house in the east end of Toronto”. Synthesisers in the living room, letting songs drift into life organically, though inspiration would occasionally come
to him elsewhere. “I wanted to capture the feeling of weather changing, the moodiness of the sky,” says
Cummings. On the back of this strident, smart, infectious album, the forecast ahead is good for Marker

The Past We Leave Behind
Mike Simonetti has decided to split from Italians Do It Better to focus on his new project, Pale Blue, as well
as his new venture: the freshly minted label 2MR (Two Mikes Records). A collaboration between Simonetti
and Captured Tracks, 2MR is an opportunity for Simonetti to start from a blank slate and release music he
believes in. The first release on 2MR will be The Past We Leave Behind, the debut album from Pale Blue.
Pale Blue, referencing the term “Pale Blue Dot” , coined by Carl Sagan to refer to a photograph of planet
Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990, was originally conceived around the time that Hurricane
Sandy hit New York and came to completion with Simonetti’s severance from Italians. Thus, many of the
tracks that make up The Past grapple with themes of loss and new beginnings. The Past¦ encompasses
a myriad of sonic elements, ranging from rhythmic, melodic techno to atmospheric ambient productions,
while also incorporating Simonetti’s varied background in noise, drone, and even experimental dream pop.
Above it all though, Wight’s vocals remain the focal point, saturating the record with a lush melodic warmth
that’s so often missing in the electronic world. Musically, Pale Blue is a response to modern dance music
and its constant fluctuations. It intentionally bears no obvious singles, nor club hits.

Stranger Cat
Joyful Nose
In The Wilderness
Stranger Cat is the new project from Cat Martino, Sufjan Stevens’ right hand woman for the Age of Adz tour
and record, as well as All Delighted People. Cat was also a recording and touring member of Sharon Van
Etten’s band circa Epic. She appeared with The Shins on SNL and Williamsburg Park, played in Passion Pit
at Governor’s Ball, and sings on the Son Lux record Lanterns. Cat retreated from Brooklyn, NY to winter in
the Sierra Foothills in a small cottage. She explored the gamut from ethereal to turbulence. Simple melodies
or beats became powerful walls of sound melting through snowstorms, howling winds and stark silence
nestled inside gargantuan oaks and the infinite starry dome. Joined by Sven Britt for a week, each of them
traded making beats, or melodic parts on casios, synths, guitars, branches and spoons, while the other
recorded. Out of this adventure was born “In The Wilderness”, the duo’s debut full-length out April 14th on
Joyful Noise Recordings.

Infinite House
While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York’s
Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods. Overgrown, rotting, and
littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout
the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House. Like Borges’ “Library of Babel”, the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisible, internal labyrinths,
which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album. By questioning, or maybe just forgetting
the rules of the real world, on their new album the band has grown beyond the “nervous soul” descriptor
they’ve been tagged with in the past, delivering an album on which nightmarish moments can phoenix into
revelations that help us reconnect with the surreal magic in our everyday lives.

The Loodies
Indica
The Loodies
On notera
Montreal ‘s The Loodies’ self-titled sophomore album was produced by Warren C. Spicer (Plants and Animals). The band demonstrate solid musical
maturity with their unique blend of indie, rock, pop and folk layered by delicate melodies and rich guitar lines. This album draws us back to the band’s
most intimate musical universe, making us glide through the ten dreamy and cleverly poignant tracks of the album. Singer Ludovic Alarie’s intoxicating voice paints a picture with its perfect dose of romance and melodic grace. The Loodies bring a confident but refined sound to their latest release.
The band’s first album “Edgy Ground”, produced and mixed by Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and Jace Lasek (Patrick
Watson, Wolf Parade). The Loodies are Ludovic Alarie (guitar, vocals), Sasha Woodward (drums), Lysandre Ménard (piano, vocals), Jérémy Delorme (guitar, trumpet) and

Signature Sounds
Violets Are Blue
Violets are Blue is Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s fifth release, a collection of rollicking, wistful and wise “love
songs from the hill.” Seven originals and five covers look at partnership through the kaleidoscope of midlife,
finding forgiveness, perseverance and self-awareness in funny, mindful, longing, and satisfied songs with
a wide range of moods. Where some pulse with drums, bass, accordion, electric guitar, fiddle and rich fourpart harmony, others hang like spacious webs from the shimmering thread of Arbo’s alto. Confident, diverse,
reflective, and loving, Violets are Blue is a bouquet from an Americana band in its prime.

Zoy Zoy
When the NY Times placed Tal National’s Kaani on their year-end Top 10 list, the Culture Minister of Niger
organized a televised ceremony to honor the band. But it didn’t stop there. The Guardian, The Independent,
Mojo, Vice, The Wire, The Financial Times, Chicago Reader and others all sang exuberant praises. NPR, KEXP
and WBEZ hosted live sessions. What they all recognized was the band’s entirely new approach to West
African music - that Tal National is a rock band. - Well, sort of. - The songs on Zoy Zoy are a mix of traditionals and originals, and they are intense. They are extraordinarily sophisticated. The band speak French,
but use the expression “very rock and roll” quite seriously, implying their awareness that the loud guitars
and bewildering rhythmic complexity separates them from their peers. They are proud that their members
represent the different cultural groups of Niger, some of which haven’t always been on the best of terms
(the group includes Tuareg, Hausa, Fulani, and Zarma). Still, they are aware that Western ears may not fully
grasp their self-proclaimed “rock” label, and we sure don’t know many rock bands that keep folks dancing
in a trance-like state for 5 hours at a time.

Carrie & Lowell
Carrie & Lowell sounds like memory: it spans decades yet does not trade on pastiche or nostalgia. Stevens’s
gauzy double-tracked vocals wash across the dashboard of long-finned, drop-top Americana, yet as we
race towards the coast we are reminded that sunshine leads to shadow, for this is a landscape of terminal
roads, unsteady bridges, traumatic video stores, and unhappy beds that provide the scenery for tales of
jackknifed cars, funerals, and forgiveness for the dead. Each track in this collection of eleven songs begins
with a fragile melody that gathers steam until it becomes nothing less than a modern hymn. Sufjan recounts
the indignities of our world, of technological distraction and sad sex, of an age without neither myths nor
miracle - and this time around, his voice carries the burden of wisdom. Carrie & Lowell accomplishes the
rare thing that any art should achieve, particularly in these noisy and fragmented days: By seeking to understand, Sufjan makes us feel less alone

Three From The Vault
Following on the heels of Light In The Attic’s vinyl LP release of One and Two From The Vault comes the final
release in the trilogy of From The Vault releases by the Grateful Dead. These releases are distinguished from
the more abundant Dick’s Picks series in that Dick’s Picks are “direct from the soundboard” recordings,
while the From The Vault series were professionally recorded on multi-track tape and then mixed down
(decades) later for release. Recorded live at the Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY) in 1971, this is the worldwide vinyl debut release of this seminal show featuring the 5 piece line-up of Pigpen, Garcia, Weir, Lesh, and
Kruetzmann (Mickey Hart had temporarily left the band at that point), freshly remastered in 2014 by Joe
Gastwirt for your pleasure. 20 classic songs on 8 sides of wax, this show has previously only been available
on CD; this is the first ever vinyl LP release! The band played six shows over the course of seven nights at the
Capitol Theatre in February of 1971, and this was the second of that run, recorded on the 19th. Their previous two studio albums had been their landmark recordings of Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty,
and while songs from those albums were certainly featured, the Dead debuted seven brand new songs on
this night–all of which went on to become Dead “standards” including “Playing in the Band,” “Greatest Story
Ever Told,” and two absolute classics: “Bird Song” and “Deal.” Essential Dead.

As an emcee, Nasa is inspired by the words of the famed screenwriter and playwright Rod Serling. In response to a question about how he’d like to be remembered 100 years from now, Serling simply said “as a
“writer.” Nasa’s music is a story of self—often focusing on defining moments in his life and current events
that strike a chord. Nasa has a love for New York like a child loves its mother. Raised on Staten Island, Nasa
reps NYC with a ferocious pride. When New York’s indie hip-hop boom hit in the 90s, Nasa was there as a
devoted attendee of events, listener of late night radio and buyer of vinyl … then, he became involved. And
as the scene has evolved and the city has changed, Nasa has been dedicated to it every step of the way. His
newest album, New York Telephone, reflects his love for his home, the way it has nurtured the indie hip hop
art form, and how it continues to be most the most influential city in the world.

Trepanning
Sunatirene is the evolving alter-ego of Baltimore-based musician and performance artist Sydney Spann.
Trepanning reflects stage one in her growth process. In this stage, she is a hybrid breed of witch. She’s from
the sea, but also from southern swamps, from oceanic mangroves, from Scotch moors and marshlands,
tropical tundra, from the brine lakes and subterranean rivers’ banks. Trepanning is an aural interpretation of
those colliding visual environments and paradoxical imaginary biomes. Collaging found samples with field
recordings, adopted folk songs set to rewritten melodies, and stream of-consciousness turned into lyrical
passages to navigate through shifting soundscapes are all forms of research. Texture is vital. She wields the
ukelin, testing its range of fragility and harshness. A sonic backdrop sets a scene for Sunatirene, and music
becomes a way for her to speak.

imaginatively adapted covers. On Lou Reed’s quirky “Makeup,” described by Rolling Stone as an “image of

Lou Reed) when I was in Palermo around Christmas time after the Bad Seeds tour. Lou had died late October. I found out 10 minutes before I had to
play solo before a sold out crowd at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Needless to say, his passing had a massive effect on me. He was my childhood hero. Europe was hard to grasp for me in a lot of ways. The culture, language barriers, the overload of dairy and ghettos of freshly placed refugees
from countries, some I had never heard of before. I was exhausted and getting drunk outside a bar where you can get Marsala for a Euro, basically all
I could afford. There were tons of kids dancing in the streets getting high and happy, when this stray yellow lab walked up to me and starts swaying
back and forth. The song Make Up came blaring through the stereo and I started swaying with the dog. It was one of those rare moments I felt alright.
We had decided to go to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame during a tour stop in Cleveland. I was pretty cynical about the whole thing and tour hadn’t been
smooth. I had to send a dude home for being a brat in Kansas City among other places and was feeling pretty exposed as the bad guy. It was a stressful
situation and trying to justify my actions in the passive aggressive world of music where no one’s making any money felt daunting. I seperated myself
from the group, the costumes, the Katy Perry and the Beyonce and hung out in the listening booth for hours. Dinah Washington came on and put every
wannabe singer, myself included, to shame. What a voice! She draws her breath so long and never loses the listener. I had to challenge myself with
this one. I hope I can sing like her someday.

Classics Vol. 1
Planet Mu are honoured to be invited to look back through RP Boo’s archives and present the cornerstones
of his style, which would emerge from Chicago’s Ghetto House in the late nineties and develop into the
genre of Footwork. These six minimal, repetitious rhythm tracks weren’t officially released at the time, with
the exception of the original version of ’11-47-99’ (The Godzilla Track) which came out under DJ Slugo’s
name in 2001, but was actually written and produced by RP Boo. Others were white labels for Dance Mania, never fully released, but which are remembered locally as key tracks in the cementing of the genre at
the end of the nineties.’Baby Come On’, often cited as the first ever Footwork track, was recorded back in
1997 – says RP Boo “I got the idea from a Radio DJ who was going nuts over the phrase, and I got busy
on the R-70, which I had just started to use, to create the track – it got played out at the clubs and the DJ’s and dancers loved it!” The sample has
since become a Footwork staple and almost every producer has made their own version of it.’Party Motion’, built around vocal samples looped into
angular patterns and offbeats over a sharp drum machine, was first played at a gym room party in 1998 and got its name from another footwork
original – Traxman. ‘02-52-03’ is a remix of the classic ‘11-47-99’ (The Godzilla Track). It is so named because February = 02, 52 = The 52 Hundred
Street RP lived on at the time and 03 is the date the remix was made, February 3rd 2003. ‘Night & Day‘, made in 1999, further develops the footwork
template with relentless toms and demented pitch shifted vocals. It is the most notable of RP’s many songs that sample Larry Levan favourite, Class
Action’s ‘Weekend‘. Since then, snippets of that song have sneaked into many of RP’s production as something of a camouflaged signature.‘Try To
Break (Original)‘. From 1997, this is another track that made use of a chipmunked sample from ‘Weekend’ combined with harmonies and looped into
a rushing phrase. Originally this was broken in Club Cavallini’s, Chicago where it was a very popular club track.‘Try To Break (Remix)‘. This is a 1998
remix that was put on the legendary Chicago mixtape that RP Boo and DJ Rashad made called ‘No-Edits-Allowed‘ in 1999.
