Issue 3 Aug 14.pub - Wooroolin State School
Term 3, Issue 3 14 August 2015 [34 Frederick Street/PO Box 12, Wooroolin] [Ph: 41642230/Fax: 41642148] Apologies for the late distribution of this fortnight’s newsletter. My attendance at the Zone Athletics and a visit from our Assistant Regional Director, Ms Debbie Hails interrupted the completion of the newsletter on time this fortnight. Firstly, congratulations to the high number of Wooroolin students who competed at Zone level this week in the South Burnett trials. Angus, Eleanor, Troy, Darryl and Karl – you’ve made Wooroolin Proud! The trials provided an excellent opportunity for small schools students to mix with larger schools and compete at a higher level. Thank you to Mr Smith who was present as Murgon State School and Kingaroy and Barambah cluster small schools’ coordinator for this event. Thank you also to Mr Edwards who supported the event as a judge. Congratulations also to all our Year 3s and 5s. The 2015 NAPLAN results have been received and issued to parents. Our school’s Literacy and Numeracy graphs are attached. Look for the green sections under ‘School’ and please compare this with the ‘National’ results. Our data shows a very pleasing comparison, with many students excelling across a range of subject areas. I will be unpacking the data and these charts at the next P&C meeting if you would like to hear more. Students have been familiarised with the format and how to interpret their individual results. For those parents who would like more information, please contact me to arrange a meeting. If, after the open classrooms, you requested a formal parent-teacher interview, could you please call the school to arrange this. Classroom teachers would be able to give you more detailed information on your child’s progress. Interviews are also an excellent opportunity to build rapport and engage with your child’s learning and our teachers. During her visit today, Ms Hails was able to spend time in the classrooms. She viewed the Resilience Group work where our students are learning about ‘being a good sport’ and viewed a maths warm-up session in the lower classroom where Ms Mason was consolidating knowledge about ‘time’ using our Neopanels (smartboards). Ms Hails spent time in the senior room where she viewed student work on poetry. Several students were able to share their work with her and answer questions about the curriculum and what they were learning. Ms Hails was impressed with their writing and book presentation. a Parent Information Session on Wednesday 19 August between 3.15pm and 4pm. This session will be an opportunity to meet and talk with our Guidance Officer, Mr Barry James who will talk about support for students with Diverse Needs. We will also cover our progress this year on Positive Behaviour for Learning and our Kidsmatter programmes. Please respond on the attachment if you are interested in this. Our school focus on reading will continue this term with the introduction of a programme called CARS and STARS. This programme will help to develop your child’s skills in comprehending and connecting with texts. Students have engaged with a series of tests and this baseline data will be used to identify ‘gaps’ in learning. Over the next 5-6 weeks, students will build their working knowledge of a range of comprehension skills such as ‘summarising’ and ‘finding the main idea’. At the conclusion of the programme, we will retest and analyse the growth. Last week our school conducted the Term 3 Evacuation Drill. Evacuation and Lockdown drills are a regular and mandated part of school life. Our school recently invested in an electronic system which was used in the evacuation drill last week. Students are familiar with the procedure and responded immediately with an evacuation to the oval. We vary the drill times so that students are familiar with the process both in and out of class times. We will be conducting a Lockdown drill in Week 7 as part of our workplace health and safety mandate. Past experiences of students undertaking a ‘lockdown’ process have included storms, snakes and cattle out. The school’s Evacuation and Lockdown Policy will be made available on our website and in hard copy from the office on request. There are quite a number of other in-school programmes being offered in the latter part of this term. Students will receive a series of coaching lessons from an NRL coaching team. Our Behaviour Support Teacher, Ms Annette Buckley, is also running short sessions on “Being Part of a Team”. Ms Buckley will focus on self-help strategies to identify safe and unsafe behaviours; ‘red’ and ‘green’ thoughts; and identifying safe practices and people. Our cluster of schools is offering students an opportunity to compete in a Cluster Spelling Bee. This will take place at the end of term. More details will follow. Mr Smith has approached me with a proposed ‘Dance Off’ with Moffatdale school. Students from Moffatdale and Wooroolin will join at the Wooroolin Hall and use their dance skills for a dance party. Parents are very welcome to attend and join in. This is an exciting event for both schools and will build friendships outside our cluster. Student Council are continuing to drive a successful fundraising agenda, raising over $200 from the recent Movie Night. It seems their dream of an endof-year excursion to Seaworld will become a reality! At the next Student Council Meeting, students will decide on a dollar value to support the senior student camp. Although final calculations cannot yet be confirmed, it is likely the camp will cost between $280 and $300 per person. This includes travel, accommodation, food and activities. Parents are welcome to make payments by instalment. Camp must be fully paid two weeks’ prior to camp as payments have to be made to providers at this time.
