Summer Series Long Runs
Essex Running Club Newsletter July 2013 Vol. 30, No. 07 The Interclub Challenge will be Sunday July 21st This year we will be having it at Veteran's Memorial Park in Passaic, off Passaic Ave, starting at 9am at the upper parking lot. We will be doing 3 laps on around the park roads (around 5K). This is an informal / unofficial club competition; no fees, no t-shirts, no goodie bag. Every runner counts! Get there before 8:30am so they can get their handicap (in minutes) / Start time, and Bib number. Every finisher counts for the best club! Runners will be started every 30 seconds based on your age & sex, so everyone has a shot to be the first runner in. Runners' finishing positions are added up for club scoring. Each person will need to count their own laps!! Also, as in prior years, feel free to bring refreshments and stuff to make a late-morning / mid-day picnic of it. Coffee, water, and bagels & donuts will be provided. And, of course, if you can't run we will need volunteers to man the intersections, water tables and finish. Congratulations to both India and Jackson on this very well deserved award Keeping Track www.EssexRunning.org Page 2 of 9 Essex Running Club Newsletter July 2013 President’s Corner Vol. 30, No. 07 by Paul Maloney Spotlight on Paige Sato and Tom Eaton Before we get to our “Spotlights” for this month, I just want to remind members about our “$2620 Fund” and “Points System” at our group runs. We also want to remind everyone about our Sunday evening “Youth Track Series”. We’ll have this information in other articles and postings on our website and newsletter. Let us know how we are doing! Do you have any questions or suggestions on club activities for our Board? Please contact me at [email protected] for any ideas or comments. Paige Sato and Tom Eaton are two very active runners and members. Paige has been with our club a short time is already very active on our Board and in maintaining our website. Paige answers some questions below: What is your favorite Essex Running Club experience? I joined ERC last spring, and my first hosted run with at Tom & Marta’s house in August. I was a bit nervous showing up as I didn’t know that many members (yet), but John Harvey graciously ran with me, and then back at the house I was quickly pressed into service with Mick’s volunteers putting together packets for the Verona 5K, and I just kept thinking to myself: “Holy Cow, this is really the friendliest group of people!”. What is your favorite running experience? The Providence Rock N Roll Half Marathon last August has been my best race. I was healthy, the weather was fabulous, the crowd support amazing, the course was scenic and varied (and not too hilly, given Providence), and I set a PR. I just remember being at mile 11, thinking, “Man, I don’t want this to be over yet.” What training methods have worked for you? What advice would you give to a new runner? I did two of Fleet Feet’s half marathon courses, which really worked for me because of the accountability factor. Most recently I’ve been working with a coach (online) who is really trying hard to get me to some decent mileage while reducing the risk for injuries. He has me running at paces that are slower than what I’m used to, but I’m covering more distance. To new runners, I would suggest finding a training program that works for you, but to not unilaterally eliminate others because your goals/available time/health requirements may change. It’s good to keep your mind open. What are your current running goals? If I can remain healthy and build up some more strength and speed, I’m hoping to get some revenge on the Old Port Half Marathon (which was my ugliest finish last year) in Portland, Maine. I am also a new member of USATF, and hope to help out ERC with its team racing. ______________________ In addition to Tom Eaton’s other running accomplishments, he was awarded the First Annual Club “Vince Carnevale Spirit Award” for his initiation, organization and dedication to our new “Youth Track Series”. Tom mentions the track program and his own ideas on running and racing when answering our “four questions”. What is your favorite Essex Running Club experience? Well I have to say I am a bit biased about this, but my favorite Essex Running Club experience has been organizing and witnessing the Junior Track Series. Last year was our first year and it was an incredible experience. We had over 100 kids at each of the 3 meets and watching them was amazing. The kids ranged from 4 year olds who had no idea what it meant to stay between the lines on a track, to older kids that put everything they had into their races. Kids and parents were both amazed by what they accomplished. The Essex Running Club was incredibly instrumental in getting these events off the ground, from supplying the seed money necessary for insurance, to the volunteers from the club that put in hours on Sunday nights to help these kids have a great experience. Keeping Track www.EssexRunning.org Page 3 of 9 Essex Running Club Newsletter July 2013 Vol. 30, No. 07 What is your favorite running experience? Over the years I have found that my favorite running experiences involve being surrounded by a group of friends that are all striving for the same goal, and having fun at the same time. Races such as the River to Sea relays with the Grumpy Grovers, the Reach the Beach relays with the ERC Beach or Bust teams and even just Sunday runs at Grove Street, and early morning workouts with the few people crazy enough to get together at 6:00 am so we can punish ourselves are what I look forward to and remember with fondness. What training methods have worked for you? What advice would you give to a new runner? Many of my friends would say that I am the last person to ask about training methods, as I have a tendency to overdo it. What has worked for me over the years though is a steady diet of interval work, tempo runs and long runs. For a new runner, I would say that you need to take your time and be patient. Don’t compare yourself to other runners. You need to pay attention to what works for you and be happy with gradual gains. Also, find a group that you fit in with, both in terms of pace and humor! The ERC and Grovers gave me that and I couldn’t be happier. What are your current running goals? My main goals are to continue to have fun, stay healthy and to try and not let age slow me down. Specifically though, I have signed up for the Mohawk Hudson River marathon this fall. There will be a large contingent of ERC runners making the trip and I am looking forward to a summer’s worth of training with my friends. ERC Annual Wine and Cheese Party Highlights ERC members and invitees —gathered on June 21st at John and Faye Harvey’s home in the Forest Hill section of Newark. There was lots of food, cheese, and desserts. A good social time was had by all and thanks again for John & Faye for hosting this year! ERC Junior Track Series – Volunteers Needed! I passed through denial, anger, bargaining and depression with relative ease, but, like the last few miles of a marathon, fell short of acceptance. Given how often I’m injured, you’d think I’d handle this better by now. I don’t. Here’s pretty much how it goes every time… Denial: Hmm, that’s weird. My knee kind of hurts. I’m sure it’ll pass. Probably just a little sore. Few Advil and ice will do the trick. This is nothing. I’m fine. I’m totally fine. Next run – Hmm, that’s weird. Still kind of hurts. Maybe I put on weight. (Just kidding, I haven’t put on weight since high school. Don’t blame me, it’s genetic.) Maybe I twisted it or need new shoes? I’ll rest it a day. That should do it. No biggie. Next run – Hey, my knee feels better! I’ll just… Damn. Still really hurts. I better ask the guys for advice. They said take it easy – like they ever follow that advice. I go to Runners World and type in “knee injury.” Get 437 relevant articles and 1,407 rehab exercises. Maybe I can do them all if I quit my job. I’d see a doctor, but my philosophy is if I can’t explain it, a doctor can’t fix it. If my leg snaps in two, I make an appointment right away. I say, hey, my leg’s in two pieces – that’s wrong. But when all I can say is my knee kinda hurts generally in the knee area, it’s a wasted co-pay. Things need to get worse before they can get better. Eh, it’s probably only temporary. Just need a good night’s sleep. I can run through it. Anger: I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS FREAKIN’ HAPPENED TO ME… AGAIN! I JUST GOT HEALTHY. I DON’T ASK FOR MUCH – JUST TO RUN 30 MILES A WEEK WITHOUT FALLING APART. WHY CAN’T I EVER HAVE A TRAINING CYCLE WITHOUT THESE FREAKIN’ SETBACKS? WHY DOES MY LOG ALWAYS READ “INJURED” TWO WEEKS BEFORE IT SHOULD SAY “TAPERING?” I HAVE RACES COMING UP I ALREADY PAID FOR. I WASN’T HEALTHY FOR THEM LAST YEAR SO MY TIMES WILL SUCK… AGAIN. I CAN’T IMPROVE IF I CAN’T TRAIN. I HATE THIS BLOODY SPORT! I NEVER WANT TO RUN AGAIN! GRRRRRRRR!!!!!! Bargaining: Okay, I’ll see a doctor, but no operation. I’m too young for that. I’ll take some time off. But not till after the Lager Run. That’s a good one. Or Sunset Classic. I can’t disappoint Gigs. His whole self-image is based on my support of him as Race Director. THERE’S NO REASON I SHOULD BE IN THIS MUCH BLOODY PAIN!!! (Sorry, residual anger). Okay, how’s this? I’ll run President’s Cup, Lager Run and Sunset Classic, but then rest a week and train only part time for River to Sea. The other guys can carry the load. My knees can’t be worse than Phil’s. Heck, my 83-year-old mom’s knees can’t be worse than Phil’s. I hope this isn’t how it started with him. He was probably running one day and thought, “Hmm, that’s weird.” Seriously, here’s the deal. I’ll go easy for August if I can just have a 25 mile/week base going into fall marathon training. That’s fair, right? That’s not asking too much. Come on, I’ll be your best friend. Depression: I’ll never run again. I’m going to sit around, lose muscle tone and get fat. (Ha, just kidding again. Exercise or not, I can’t add pounds. Seriously. High metabolism. Don’t shoot the messenger!) I’ll probably limp the rest of my life. I’ll be in a Stephen Hawking wheelchair moving a joystick around with my tongue, talking in that weird mechanized voice. Sure, I’ll solve incredibly hard differential equations about unseen gravitational forces that hold the universe’s very fabric together, but my PRs will never improve. What kind of trade off is that? I’ll never again know the joy of getting up for a freezing cold 7:00 a.m. run from Grove on a Sunday. When I’m warm in my bed, lounging around on my 400 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, I’ll think of my friends with two good knees and have a tinge of sadness. An ever so slight tinge. Barely a feeling at all, but a tinge nonetheless. Mmm, toasty down comforter. Keeping Track www.EssexRunning.org Page 5 of 9 Essex Running Club Newsletter July 2013 Vol. 30, No. 07 Ugh, I’m so depressed. Woe is knee. Great, I’m writing puns. Is this what happened to Phil, too? Did he start making puns only after his knee went bad? Shoot me now. Acceptance: Okay, so this is where I always cramp up. I understand I’m mourning a loss, coming to grips with an unavoidable part of our sport, but I know I’ll be injured multiple times a year so why not embrace the downtime? Why fight the inevitable? Maybe it’s the belief in my mind that I’m still 18 and my future is limitless. All my PRs are ahead and my body is mine to bend at will. Any injury is outside the norm and at best a momentary disruption to the perfect medical specimen I am. (Did I mention I can’t gain weight? Really. It’s soooo amazing!) Maybe running itself is my attempt to deny aging and if I accept even one injury it’s tantamount to admitting I won’t actually live forever. MAYBE I JUST NEED TO STOP WHINING AND RUN MORE TILL MY FREAKIN’ KNEE STOPS HURTING!!!! Yeah, that’s what I’ll do. I’m sure it’ll feel better in the morning. It was a SCREAM (no pun intended). Runners attempt to finish 3.1 miles of trail and obstacles without being eaten by hoards of the walking dead. Being “eaten” means getting your three red ribbons (worn around the waist) pulled off by zombies. The obstacles were the easy part — crawling through mud, falling into water, going through a maze, etc. The hard part was getting past the zombies. You can’t run this like a normal 5K. Around every bend is a swarm of zombies waiting for you. It’s almost impossible to get through them alive without a strategy. That was the fun part — working with the other runners to thwart the zombies. Runners will long remember Sue’s battle cry “Protect The Queen!” Anyway, Sue and I didn’t make it. I got eaten by mile 1.5. Sue’s brains were sucked out around mile 2. As newly dead people, we decided to help the “living” by acting as decoys. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. We finished the race covered in mud, soaking wet, and still dead. For obvious reasons, this 5K is not timed. If you get a chance to do a Zombie 5K, you should definitely sign up. You can be a runner or a zombie. The zombies had as much fun as the runners (maybe more). College Ave. Mile, New Brunswick, NJ June 8, 2013 Laura Barry Six of us traveled to New Brunswick for the College Ave Mile. The event was hosted by the Garden State Track Club and was organized great! There were many heats ranging from Men and Women’s Elite, Master, and Sub 6 all the way to sub 13 min miles. The course was 2 laps around a block. We were able to cheer each other on during the different heats. After the individual miles there was a 2 x 800 relay and a 2 x mile relay. There was a BBQ and Beer Garden scheduled for after the race but do to the iffy weather this was moved into a local bar. Luckily the weather was great! I would highly recommend this event. Many options to choose from – 5K walk or run, 10K walk or run and bike routes too! Regina (Jean) Zignorski – 53:25. The course alternates between some of the major and residential streets in Pequannock, and briefly enters Lincoln Park. The course, like most of Pequannock, is very flat. 284 runners and walkers took part in the race. There was also a wheelchair division. The weather was about as good as you could ask for this time of year. I think it was in the 70s when the race started (8AM) before it warmed up. There were two water stops, something I’ve learned not to take for granted. I’ve always liked this race, because of the flat course, the fact that I once lived in Pequannock, and that they raffle off a lot of items. Keeping Track www.EssexRunning.org Page 7 of 9 Essex Running Club Newsletter June 2013 Delta Dental Mt. Washington Road Race, June 15, 2013 Vol. 30, No. 06 Helen Scarnegi Yesterday I completed the Delta Dental Mt. Washington Road Race in New Hampshire. I am still in awe of the incredible experience I had, and this is one I will remember always. I would have never imagined that when I started running 6 years ago that I would have these kind of adventures. I love the challenge and this race presented challenge, scenery, great new acquaintances and a new feeling of confidence. I was inspired by Chris’ write up, and tried the best I could to mentally and physically prepare to get to the top of Mt Washington. Only one hill of 6288 feet . I finished in 2:04 and 28 seconds. It’s one of those races you go into with no expectations other than to finish unless you are an elite runner. I was so nervous and had visions of falling off the mountain, not catching my breath, my legs refusing to move and all other crazy ideas. None of that happened but what I can say is I loved every minute of the climb. It was extremely windy for the last miles with winds up to 50 mph. The weather changed fast and at the finish they gave out blankets. The medal is so earned and the last place finisher was s 93 year old man. He did it in over 3 hours! How cool is that?! There is a lot of encouragement along the way and as you are doing this, it feels surreal as you see the clouds so close . This may be the closest I get to heaven. I did get to say Happy Fathers Day to my Dad who I believe was looking down at me and helping me realize I can finish. I saw Gregg at the almost finish and he was smiling and I yelled out I did it. After that it was a 22 percent incline to finish line. Humbling moments. Could I have pushed more? Sure, but I am thrilled I had this opportunity and felt so exhilarated at the end. I had a bit of heart racing and a bloody nose, but it was all good though. It was also the greatest post race dinner which was basically Thanksgiving dinner and I forfeited it to Gregg. He waited on the cold mountain and drove that crazy road to the top . He said he was so happy to see me as he thought I might get easily distracted on the mountain and fall . I would recommend this race to anyone and I will embrace our little hills anytime. In fact, bring it on! There is a lottery and it opens in February . There are so many people who have done it 4 and 5 times. Why not? President’S Cup Night 5K Run, Millburn, NJ, June 17, 2013 Another exciting race in Millburn with over 1,200 runners and lots of cheering spectators. ERC fielded two teams in the highly competitive USATF-NJ men’s open championship and our “A” team finished in the top ten with an average time of 18:19 beating out many of the other club teams from Clifton, Do Run Runners, Shore AC, Morris County Striders, Rose City and Central Jersey. We also had several people win age group awards (Paul Giuliano, Pia Lopresti, Charlie Slaughter, George Studzinski) and several PR’s including Glen Freyer, Ryen Lopresti and Pia Lopresti. Lots of fun at the post race party fueled by the usual Sam Adams beer truck including a cider drink this year as well as the summer ale and Boston lager. Over 1,000 runners navigated the mostly flat course around the tree lined streets of Glen Ridge with the finish on the track at Hurrell Field. Many people stayed for the post race party featuring Brooklyn Brewery lager. Our men’s teams put in a strong performance in this USATF-NJ Men’s Masters 5K championship race with the 50's team finishing in 1st place and our 40's and 60's team in 4th place. We also had several age group award winners – Ashby Sundown (2nd), Paul Giuliano (2nd), Richard Biebel (2nd) and George Studzinski (1st).
