Third Annual Newbie/Ladies Ride
On February 14th, 2015, despite the low snow pack, we co-hosted our 3rd annual
Newbie/Ladies Ride, as well as the Elkford Snowmobile Association hosted Valentine's
fund raising dance. We had a great turnout from out of town, and from local riders, having
over 65 in total with almost half of those riders being female!!
Thank you to the ladies who volunteered their time at the dance to run the bar; Jeff McRae, DJ from Fernie, for
giving us a great deal and service; Overwaitea Foods for giving us a great deal on food; and Kapps Pizza House for an
amazing dinner.
We would like to take this time to thank the businesses that donated funds or products to help make these two
events a great success. Our Gold sponsor this year was Big Digger Rebuilds, Silver sponsor was Site Direct, and Bronze
sponsor was Kootenay Market for donating all of the items and food for the mid-day lunch. We would also like to thank all
our local businesses and others for their donations of prizes, including but not limited to the following: The District of
Elkford, Western Financial, Bearspaw Contracting, Lordco, Napa Auto Parts, Boston Pizza, The Calgary Snowmobile
Club, Thunderstruck Films, Ghost Rider Motorsports, The Betties Powersports Network, The Elkford Snowmobile
Association, Granger Welding, Summit Creek Cabins, Top Gun Motorsports, Causeway Bay Restaurant, and The
Hamptons Inn and Suites Red Deer.
Once again we had a great time and we thank all who participated. We are raising these funds to put a warm-up/
emergency shelter at the top of Koko Claims/Crossing Creek Trail. This shelter will be accessible by all powersports
enthusiasts year round.

AGNES CREEK TRADING
And fortunately you have me to help you with the
latter. Yes, it is Tax Time again and this is your
reminder.
I attended the CCH tax seminar as I do every
year to get updates on tax changes.
Do you know that CRA is phasing out writing
cheques? You need to set up Direct Deposit to be
ready for CRA to put your tax funds (and any other
moneys coming from the Federal Government) right
into your bank account.
CRA continues doing more processing reviews
of our tax returns in their effort to squeeze a few
more dollars from us all. Don’t just pay any amount
they say you owe before you look into it, as it is
often a matter of providing information to back-up
your claim. I have been told that this year CRA is
targeting business-in-home expenses. Make sure
you have all your receipts.
Reminders: There are new rules for paying and
collecting CPP.
An important item in the Elk Valley, where we
have to travel for a good portion of our medical care
is to claim expenses. Depending on the situation,
you can claim travel, meals and accommodation.
You have benefits for your children for their
attendance in art and/or physical activity programs.
When you bring me your tax information, please
remember to bring the assessment or reassessment that the government sent after filing
your 2014 taxes.

We have just celebrated Valentine’s Day, the day when candy hearts, delicious chocolates and beautiful cards are
exchanged between family members and lovers. Exchanging these gifts is a way of saying to someone you care about
that they are important to you.
When I decided to do this article on love I went to the best love story I have ever read. This story is found in the Holy
Bible. You may be saying, how can that be? There are people fighting against their enemies, there are countries being
taken over by other countries, no love being shown in those chapters.
However, the overall story in the Bible is a story of love. In the beginning, God made the earth and made man and
woman. They were to look after the earth and have children. They did that but because they had been given free will and
could make decisions, they managed to allow their own thoughts to reign instead of going to God, their creator for
direction.
Because they did their own thing, they soon had made a mess of the universe they had been given charge over.
However, God the Father continued to love them and direct them when they came to Him.
Years after the creation, God sent His only Son to earth. Jesus was born to the virgin Mary, was raised by Joseph
and Mary and spent the first part of His life like all young boys back in Biblical times. At the age of 33, Jesus began to
minister to the people in his area. He encouraged them to recognize their wrongdoing, instead of always blaming other
people or situations on their problems. He shared with them that obedience to God the Father would make their lives
much different than the paths they were on. However, few people believed Him. Those in authority saw Him as a
troublemaker and someone who was their enemy. They killed Him by crucifixion. He was put in a borrowed tomb. Three
days later the tomb was empty, Christ was resurrected. Jesus spent a number of days teaching the people who came to
him. At that point in history people began to understand that this man was the Christ, the Son of God. This was the Good
News, Jesus the Son of God, loved us so much that He gave up His life for us.
That is love, the kind of love we are to pass on to those around us. Let us lay aside our selfishness and begin to
reach out to those who are struggling. Show them the love of Christ. You will be blessed.
Blessings

Q & A – Elkford’s New Year’s Baby
You may or may not eagerly await each January to learn of who the newest Elkfordian will be, but when it is
announced, it is always an exciting time for both the baby and family! Did you know that a presentation and gifts were
not always given to Elkford’s first baby of the year? Recently I had the opportunity to chat with the current organizer,
Becky Andrusiak, to learn more about this tradition.
Q. What year did you decide to take on the New Year’s Baby as it is presented now?
A. When I moved back to Elkford in 2005 after being away for a few years, I inquired with the District of Elkford about
who organizes the New Year’s Baby. They didn’t have anyone coordinating it at the time, so I submitted a proposal to
take on the venture the way it used to be done in Elkford. The first baby who received it was born the following
January (2006).
Q. Who used to organize the New Year’s baby gifts/
presentation?
A. I’m not sure who has always done it, but the year I was
born (1982) it was organized through the Elkford Ladies
Auxiliary at the Diagnostic Centre
Q. Why did you decide to take this project on?
A. When I was born, I was Elkford’s New Year’s Baby! My
own baby book is filled with pages listing donations I
received and newspaper articles celebrating me as
Elkford’s newest community member. I have always loved
to look at them while growing up, and wanted to see the
same tradition brought back to Elkford.
Q. What is involved with doing this project?
A. Every fall, the District of Elkford provides me with a
business license list with the addresses/names to send
out a letter to request donations. Once all my letters are
printed, signed and addressed I take them back to the
District and they mail them for me. I am then contacted by
interested businesses to arrange pick up of the
donations, I put them all together (usually in a basket),
and arrange for a drop off and photo with the baby and
their family after the baby is born. I also ensure that each
donator is properly thanked with a thank you letter, and
their business name printed in the District of Elkford
newsletter and the Elkford Focus.
All donations are welcome! This year, donations ranged from cash-–which is deposited into the Credit Union in the
form of a Community Bond in the baby’s name-–to gift certificates, hair care for mom, and miscellaneous baby
supplies. Donations can be accepted throughout the year-–they can either be given to me (Becky) or at the District
Office.
Q. How would you like to see this project continue into the future?
A. I would love to see this presentation continue. I like this project because it brings our community together to
celebrate our newest community member! I would love to continue donating my time and efforts towards this with the
community’s continued support.
Elkford’s New Year’s Baby Stats
(since 2006)
Number of boys – 7
Number of girls – 3
Earliest baby born (date) – January 3
Latest baby born (date) – January 26
Number of babys who share their birthday with Becky? – Zero!!
Q. Any memorable experiences you would like to share from past year’s?
A. The baby boy born in 2012 was one of my favourite presentations. The family had an older son and he was SO
excited to see everything that he unwrapped it all and insisted his dad put every stitch of clothing on his new baby
brother! Baby brother was NOT as happy about that, but it was awesome to see the family’s delight in all of the
unexpected gifts.

#279 Elk Valley Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron …what are we up to?
Thank you to everyone who attended our Pancake Breakfast at the Winter in The Wild event on February 14th; an
event in which the squadron has never participated but one we would love to repeat. Cadets and parents worked
hard together as a team to prepare and provide breakfast to all those who attended. Each and every one of the
Cadets demonstrated a fantastic work ethic, leadership and/or teamwork skills and exemplary manners. A few
photos of the morning...
Breakfast was followed by our Winter In The Wild
Snow Survival Skills Demonstration
(minus the snow)
Thank you to everyone who continues to
support this invaluable program.
In preparation for the upcoming regional Effective Speaking
Competition, 8 Cadets recently stood behind the podium to
speak to selected topics. Public speaking can be daunting to
say the least so kudos to everyone who had the courage to
stand before their peers and general audience.
You should all be proud.

Congratulations Fairhurst, O’Sullivan
and Gold! Everyone wishes you well at
the competition.

Despite the seatbelt, the mayor received a dumping

eligible voters voted, I would push the mayor the length of

Looking for
Volunteer
Tutors
Food Bank
Easter is Coming!!
If you love to read and enjoy working with children,
consider becoming a volunteer tutor with the One-to
-One literacy program at Rocky Mountain
Elementary School.
We are looking for both regular tutors and
alternates who come in when a regular tutor is sick
or absent. As a regular tutor, you will have a
commitment of 90 minutes a week, reading with
three children for approximately 25 minutes each.
You will follow the same three children each week
and will be able to see the progress they make as
they become more confident readers. The focus is
on encouraging children and helping them to enjoy
reading.
We are looking for tutors to start on the week of
April 7 and come in once a week for 8 weeks until
May 27. We are also looking for alternate tutors
right now-–if you have some experience, please
contact us for an informal training session to get
started.
We are planning to run a workshop on the
afternoon of Monday March 9th, hosted by Meghan
Morton, Literacy-Coordinator with CBAL. (It may be
possible to arrange another time if required).
If you are interested in signing up, or for more
information, please contact Christine at 250-8654358 or talk to Rosalie at the library.

Elkford Minor ball wants to send a big thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors who made our Snowball Tournament
such a big success!! Even without the “snow” all 9 teams had a lot of fun playing ball in February. We will for sure be back

I apologise if we have missed anyone. We had such tremendous support from many businesses and individuals, it
was truly overwhelming!
Thank you first of all to the District of Elkford for their support with our Winter in the Wild event. To name a few stand
out individuals from the District who went out of their way for us, thank you Daryl Hickman for helping set up the fields,
and Garity Stanley and Chantel Dawson for everything else that needed to be done. A great big shout out to the rest of

On March 26th, Meghan Wallace, Barrister and Solicitor,
spoke to a group of twenty-five people about Wills and
Estates.
Meghan started by explaining the three main reasons
why people should have a will: the care of minor children
if their parents die, the disbursement of property, and to
reduce tax implications. She then went on to explain other
legal documents that may be necessary to clarify other
aspects of a person’s life, including Power of Attorney and
Personal Representation Agreements.
The rest of the session had a lively question and
answer period. Everyone who attended said that they
found the session very informative.
