Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 2 Winter 2010 Let’s Explore Steampunk by Christie Bryant “Imagine a world where electricity never became viable. Where Tesla never experimented and Einstein stayed a patent clerk. Take Victorian sensibility, with mad-scientist speculation and inject a bit of sci-fi. A world powered by steam and gears where flight is through the majestic zeppelin and brass is more populace than steel. “– Min [Tribe Forum] What happens when one mixes art, science fiction, steam power, and the Victorian era with the technology of the 19th century? The answer: Steampunk. Steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used, that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature futuristic innovations as Victorian’s may have envisioned them. Steampunk is often based on science fiction ideas. For instance, the books written by H.G.Wells, The Time Machine, or Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Wells envisioned a time machine based on steam power, something that to this day does not exist. Verne wrote about space, air and underwater travel before air travel and practical submarines were invented, and before practical means of space travel had been devised. Like the art of Steampunk, the fictional machines in these stories offered an alternate history. When you create a project “steampunk- style”, think of futuristic technology implemented into the Victorian era. Think of metal, big bolts, and gears mixed with the Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style and art; think of what x-ray goggles would look like if they were invented back when steam was the primary source of power. What if a computer was invented in the Victorian era? What would the keyboard look like? What kind of clothes would you wear when you took off in your steam-powered flying machine? Try your hand at creating something steampunk-style, the possibilities are endless. Steampunk has made it’s way into several of the crafting industries, including paper crafting! Tim Holtz is the grandfather of the industrial look, along with our own, Candy Rosenberg. Over the years, Candy’s steampunk inspired artwork has been integral in introducing the “Steampunk” genre into mainstream crafting. It is a fun theme to work with in which “anything goes” as long as it is industrial, which allows us to be as creative as we want and still fit it within the theme. In this issue, our talented designers take us on a steamie stroll using theme inspired products from Stanislaus Imports, The Rubber Cafe, Graphic 45, BoBunny Press and Imaginarium Designs. Trim to size with your favorite paper trimmer. 3 Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 10 Winter 2010 Stanislaus Imports “Love Makes The World Go Round” Tutorial, Continued 4. Using Beacon Adhesives “3-in-1 Advanced Craft Glue,” adhere the paper to a piece of styrofoam that has also been trimmed to fit inside the frame opening. 4 5. Glue the styrofoam piece, image-side down, to the underside of the frame. 5 Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 11 Winter 2010-2011 Stanislaus Imports “Love Makes The World Go Round” Tutorial, Continued 6. Now the fun part--embellishing! Begin by placing Stanislaus metal gears around the map paper in a pattern that implies the gears are turning the globes on the paper (making the world go ‘round). Before sticking the gears into the styrofoam, place a small amount of glue on the end of the gear spindle for added stability. 7. Next, using Glue Arts “Extreme Adhesive Squares (Micro)”, adhere the Stanislaus heart watch locket to the center of the framed paper. 7 6 Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 12 Winter 2010 Stanislaus Imports “Love Makes The World Go Round” Tutorial, Continued 8. Using Cutter Bee micro tip scissors, cut the Steampunk couple from Graphic 45 Steampunk Debutante “Nouveau Artistry” paper. 9. Adhere the couple to the bottom right corner of the frame. 9 8 10. Continue embellishing with butterflies (cut from Graphic 45 Steampunk Debutante “Time Flies”), American Crafts Thickers and other alpha stickers to spell your sentiment. Place a tiny clock face in the center of the open side of the heart locket, also cut from Graphic 45 Steampunk Debutante “Time Flies”. 10 Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 13 Winter 2010-2011 Stanislaus Imports “Love Makes The World Go Round” Tutorial, Continued 11. Create a hanger for the frame by gluing a strip of lace to each top side of the back of the frame. A thin layer of Beacon Adhesives “3-in-1 Advanced Craft Glue” will hold this very securely. 11 12. For added stability, cut a strip of cardstock or paper and glue on top of the lace. Allow to dry thoroughly (about 10 minutes) before hanging. 12 Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 14 Winter 2010 Stanislaus Imports “Love Makes The World Go Round” Tutorial, Continued Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 15 Winter 2010-2011 The Rubber Cafe www.TheRubberCafe.com The Rubber Cafe has been producing whimsical stamps since 1998. This beautiful set of stamps created by Candy Rosenberg for The Rubber Cafe did just that. The different sizes and designs in this set are perfect for creating a patterned background. You will need: • Stamps: The Rubber Cafe “Be Stylish, Steampunk Charity Wings” • Cardstock- Paper Accents “Muslin: Aluminum,” “Recycled Kraft” • Adhesive - Beacon Adhesives “Zip Dry,” Glue Arts “Adhesive Squares” • Embellishment - Prima Marketing “Pearls” • Ink: Tsukineko “Memento: Rose Bud, Tuxedo Black” • Pens: Copic Markers Scrap n’ Art Magazine Page 23 Winter 2010-2011 The Rubber Cafe “Dress Form Card” Tutorial, Continued Instructions 1. Select light colored cardstock and ink the “Steampunk Charity Wings” dress form stamp with dark pink ink. Stamp the dark pink dress form and then without re-inking, stamp again to get a light pink dress form. Repeat with black ink to get various shades of gray. Stamp an area larger than the card you will be making so you can trim the edges. To further distress, spray a few splotches of Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist “Creme de Chocolat”. 2. Repeat the color technique, this time using the “Steampunk Charity Wings” sprocket image and steampunk sentiment. 1 2 3. Color in a few of the dress forms with Copic markers. To create designs, use the Copic Colorless Blender to make dots or stripes. 4. Cut stamped panel to measure 4”x6” in order to fit a card base of 5”x7” and ink around edges. Ink the sentiment from “Be Stylish” in dark pink and then ink a few spots with black before stamping the sentiment. Trim sentiment and ink around edges before adhering to panel. 5. Wrap thin wire around panel, adhering it on the back with “Adhesive Squares.” Apply pearls to the middle of sprocket images and apply the panel to the card base with Zip Dry adhesive. 3 Scrap n’ Art Magazine 5 Page 24 Winter 2010 Graphic 45 by Ami Godfrey We could not do a Steampunk edition without using the “Steampunk Debutante” paper collection from Graphic 45.
