Inglewood Hosts 20th Annual King Day Celebration
DR. KING HONORED DURING INGLEWOOD’S CELEBRATION OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER’S LIFE AND LEGACY Over one thousand marchers took to the streets, marched, sang and participated in the festivities of Inglewood’s 22nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Celebration. 2004 Track and Field Olympic Gold Medalist, Joanna Hayes, 100.3 The Beat radio personality Shirley Strawberry, and KTLA Channel 5 television newscaster Michaela Pereira served as CoGrand Marshals for a symbolic march which recreated the spirit and enthusiasm of the civil rights marches of the 1960’s. Prior to the march, participants assembled at The Tabernacle at Faithful Central Bible Church where they were inspired by several rousing speeches. Dr. William Thurmond, Senior Pastor of Park Windsor Baptist Church, captivated the audience with a stirring and inspirational keynote address and KJHL 102.3 FM radio personality Janine Haydel, served as the mistress of ceremonies for the program. Michaela Pereira, Shirley Strawberry and Janine Haydel The program was highlighted by performances by Inglewood’s King Day Chorale, the Inglewood High School Gospel Choir, LaTijera Unity Chorus and Morningside High Dance Ensemble. Winners of the Martin Luther King Jr. speech contest, which is conducted in Inglewood schools and churches, as part of the celebration, received thunderous applause as they presented their award winning speeches. Congratulations to the contest winners: Melody Quiroz, Oak Street Elementary School; Khamal and Khalil White, Parent Elementary School; Tan-Talaysha Bailey, Monroe Middle Magnet School; and Jennifer Obakhume, Inglewood High School. The City of Inglewood would like to thank the 2004 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Planning Committee and event volunteers.
