ike many other guitarists in jazz, Mike Stern falls through
the cracks. I first started thinking about this subject at IAJE
in 2002 after a chance introduction to Al DiMeola. And it’s
a topic that comes up every so often.
DiMeola, who at a young age played in front of stadium-sized
crowds in Return to Forever, was bemoaning the state of radio.
Smooth jazz radio wouldn’t play his recordings because they were
too straight ahead. Jazz radio wouldn’t touch the stuff because the
electric and electronic sounds were too much like smooth jazz.
(And by the 1980s, much of fusion had run its course and, except
for its top practitioners, had run into an artistic dead end and a
backlash somewhat like the demise of disco at its nadir.)
Mike Stern’s music seems to fall into that no-man’s-land between smooth and mainstream jazz. I’d suggest that it isn’t his
fault, but jazz radio’s, that a gap outside the strictly-policed jazz
genre exists. When artists like Stern or DiMeola create exciting
improvisational music, we should approach it with an open mind
and a willing ear. Both have rabid fan bases eager to hear their
music.

Three-Day ‘Rebuild The Soul Of
America’ to Commemorate Katrina
Anniversary Planned In New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – Nine-time
Grammy Award-winning musician
and New Orleans native Wynton Marsalis returns to New Orleans to commemorate Hurricane Katrina and help
support the cultural infrastructure of a
city devastated one year ago.
“Celebrate Jazz Trio: Rebuild
the Soul of America” is a three-day
commemorative event sponsored by
Harrah’s Casino that includes a concert; a talent search contest featuring
performances by Marsalis and the hottest local talent in the Mississippi Delta; and a free jazz and culinary event
featuring Emeril Lagasse with Marsalis welcoming back the school children
of New Orleans. Thousands of New
Orleanians and out-of-town visitors
are expected to attend the commemorative events.
“We wanted to bring this event
to New Orleans not only to help raise
money to support the people recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina but to remind them that
they’re not alone,” Marsalis said. “I
love this city as much as you do.”
“Harrah’s New Orleans is proud
to join Wynton and so many others
working together to focus national attention on the city’s cultural assets and
its continuing need for assistance,” said
Anthony Sanfilippo, Harrah’s Entertainment’s Central Division president.

The concert also showcases the talent
of three of Gospel music’s hottest artists: Grammy Award-winning Gospel legend Yolanda Adams, Grammy

and local talent also are on the roster
to perform. Tickets go on sale Tuesday.

Rebuild the Soul of America Charitable Trust (RSOA) is being formed
as an independent not-for-profit entity focusing its efforts on rebuilding the
cultural economy in America by supporting civic life, musicians and the
integrated arts, and creating awareness of the critical role of the American Cultural community. Most of the
targeted areas for grant funding are in
line with Marsalis’ role as co-chairman of the Cultural Committee of the
Mayor of New Orleans’ Bring New
Orleans Back Commission.
Additional information also is
available online at www.celebratejazz.

Ambassador of Swing Talent
Search
The opening night of events Sunday, Aug. 27, marks the first installment of the Ambassador of Swing
musical talent reality series in the tradition of American Idol. The series
brings the “making of a Star” concept
such as MTV’s Making the Band to
the Delta Region. The jazz version is
produced by former MTV Senior producer J. Kevin Swain and takes a cultural step further by giving homage to
America’s original art form-Jazz and
its blues roots.
The first show will be taped at the
Harrah’s New Orleans Theater from
9 to 11 p.m. with edgy, playful performances by Marsalis and the series’
host. Subsequent shows will discover
what talent is “swingin’” the hardest in
juke joints, living rooms, back rooms
and street corners throughout the
Mississippi Delta. This unique concept
features performances by undiscovered

Orleans region. What sets the Ambassador of Swing apart from the others is
that viewers will get an education on
the roots of American music. Contributions to the RSOA Charitable Trust
will be made annually from the series.
Cookin’ With Music! With Chef
Emeril Lagasse and Wynton
Marsalis
Marsalis and celebrity chef and
restaurateur Emeril Lagasse will host
a free educational cooking concert for
4,000 school children from New Orleans and surrounding parishes. The
event will feature a cooking demonstration of Jivin’ Jambalaya by the
Master Chef coupled with jazz education by Marsalis. The event takes place
Aug. 28 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The two New Orleans
cultural ambassadors will explore two
important aspects of New Orleans culture: Jazz and food.
“Wynton and I have created a
fun-focused educational performance
to share our love of cooking and music with New Orleans-area children
as they kick-off the new school year,”
said Lagasse. “What better way to instill pride and hope for the future than
to showcase our culture.
For attendance information, school
administrators, nonprofit organizations and social interest groups can

New Orleans: Rebuilding the Soul
of America ... One Year Later
The marquee event is a star-studded benefit concert and taping on the
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina –
Tuesday, Aug. 29 – at the New Orleans Arena.
Marsalis and friends are donating
their time and talent to the musical
event, “New Orleans: Rebuilding the
Soul America ... One Year Later.” The
concert celebrates the enduring spirit
of New Orleans, its music and those
brave Americans who have begun the
process of rebuilding.
John Cossette, executive producer of the Grammy Awards and BET
Awards, Don Mischer, producer of
The Olympics opening and closing
ceremonies, and BET Awards Producer Ron Weisner are joining Marsalis
and his production partner Lisa Marie
Hoggs to produce the “Rebuilding the
Soul of America” concert.
“We are mournful of all that was
lost following Hurricane Katrina;
however, we’re also committed to
keeping the focus on the great need to
rebuild this amazing city,” said Hoggs,
Marsalis’ co-executive producer of the
three-day tribute. “The response from
the entertainment industry has been
overwhelmingly supportive.” Additional talent will be announced in the
coming weeks.
The events are co-chaired by Bill
McFarlin, executive director of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE), and Daniel Carlin, chair
emeritus of The Recording Academy
(GRAMMY® Awards), both trustees
of the RSOA Charitable Trust. Seletha Smith Nagin, first lady of New
Orleans, also is chairing the events.
“Having spent so much time in
this community, I’ve heard a common
theme from the people in New Orleans, that some days they’re up and
some days they’re down,” Hoggs said.
“We truly wanted to create an event
that brings people together to encourage the community and help bring the
spirit back to this great city.

“We’ve kept the ticket prices low
so as many people in the community as
possible can come out and be together,” Hoggs said.
“We thank our native son, Wynton Marsalis, and culinary ambassador Emeril Lagasse and their teams
for their vision and commitment to
the rebirth of New Orleans,” New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin said. “As
we come together as One New Orleans and one nation to spiritually reflect on the devastating losses we have
experienced, let us stand together in
hope for the historical rebirth that will
be our future.”
Marsalis is at the forefront of the

last fall and a weeklong New Orleans

New Orleans Festival in New York.
He also serves on the city of New Orleans’ Bring New Orleans Back Commission as well as co-chairs the state
Office of the Lt. Governor’s National Advisory Board for Culture, Recreation and Tourism.

Legendar y Brazilian Composer And
Arranger Moacir Santos Dead At 80
PASADENA, Calif. – Moacir Santos,
the legendary composer and arranger
whose body of work served to expand
popular preconceptions of Brazilian
music beyond bossa nova and Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB), died in
Pasadena on Sunday, Aug. 6.
Santos was recently enjoying a
resurgence of interest in his career,
thanks in part to the efforts of producers Mario Adnet and Ze Nogueira,
and New York-based record label Adventure Music.
“Moacir’s passing is a monumental loss to Brazilian music and to music
in general,” said Mario Adnet. “These
recent accolades are proof that Ze
Nogueira’s and my belief in Moacir’s
legacy was shared by his fellow Brazilians and by the world.”
Richard Zirinsky, Jr., President
of Adventure Music, said, “It is with
great sadness that we learn of the passing of our friend Moacir Santos, and
we send our deepest condolences to
Moacir’s wife, Cleonice, and to their
son, Moacir, Jr., as they mourn the
loss of their beloved husband and father. Adventure Music feels honored
and quite proud to have worked with
Moacir and both Mario Adnet and Ze
Nogueira in releasing both Ouro Negro
and Choros & Alegria and feels strongly that both of these incredible works
will only help to celebrate the amazing
life and music of this fine man, who
will be greatly missed.”
Santos’ two recent releases on Adventure Music, Ouro Negro and Choros
& Alegria, earned considerable acclaim.
Moacir Santos was regarded as a

Mendes have cited his influence. The
late Brazilian guitar ace Baden Powell was Moacir’s pupil, and revered his
master on the song “Samba da Benção.”
Santos gained status as an arranger
while working on the radio in Brazil in
the 1950s. According to Santos, one of
his most important works in Brazil was
the soundtrack he wrote for the movie
“Amor no Pacifico (Love in the Pacific),” which opened the doors for him
to both the Brazilian and international markets, and eventually prompted
his move to the United States in 1967.
In America, he recorded four solo albums, three of them for the renowned
jazz label Blue Note, and one of them
nominated for a Grammy Award. He
also wrote soundtracks in Hollywood
and taught numerous students, including Sérgio Mendes. JW

Artist Q&A:
Mike Stern, Guitarist
M
ike Stern is a talker. What follows is part of a conversation where he talks about his excellent new record, working with musicians like Miles Davis and Richard Bona,
and about his own journey from a kid from DC to a Boston student to a guitar player touring the world. There’s been a lot of miles,
and some of them particularly rough, but coming out the other end,
Stern has lived to tell his story, which is fascinating.
– Tad Hendrickson
JazzWeek: I like the new album’s cover.
Mike Stern: Thanks man. Those are actually my cat. My wife
Leni loves cats, so we have four of them. We got them in the
picture by putting a lot of cat stuff out and then removing it
from the photo, it was Photoshopped out. The photographer
was just trying to get weird photos of me and the cats. It was
cool.
It’s the first album with Heads Up. How did you connect
with them?
I’d heard about Dave Love and had been in touch with him
a little bit. First I was with Atlantic for 16 years, but they
stopped their jazz completely. That’s the only way you can
get rid of my ass. I was actually signed to do another five albums with them. Warners was in the process of downsizing
and closing too, so I went with ESC. Zawinul was with the
label and so was Maceo Parker. My record did really well,
especially in Europe because it was a German label. Just as I
was about to deliver the record they went bankrupt. They actually offered me a really good price to buy back the record
back, which was called For These Times. It did pretty well and
it sold like crazy at gigs and was sold in stores as well, so it
worked out pretty well for me.
The deal with Heads Up is a licensing deal and they gave me
a good advance and Dave was really great. The only thing I
wanted to know when I signed with him was whether Dave
Love is going to be there. I was more worried about his contract than mine. Things change at record companies

and people you work with are suddenly gone. Love’s contract is longer than
mine, so I’m going to be there for a while, and hopefully for longer. He’s got
good energy and he’s realistic, because you gotta be realistic, especially nowadays but really always. During the boom years at Atlantic there were people
who you didn’t know who they were and it turns out they would just be going
to meetings but no one knew them. And he’s a musician, so that’s cool too.
One could say that you were a fool for bassists on this record because there
are five different ones.
A fool for bassists! That’s for sure. It’s really a great line-up of players. I wanted to do a record that was different from the last two, which featured a lot of
Richard Bona playing and singing. Those were produced but they still had a
lot of playing because you gotta have a lot of playing on my records. Live it’s
always a little looser than that, and I usually work with a quartet so I wanted
to get back to that with this record, but still have some Richard Bona on it. I
didn’t want to leave the world of the last few records because I dig it, and hearing what Richard can do.
What draws you to Richard’s playing?
His spirit for one thing. I’ve known him for like 12 years – I think we met
in Israel. It was the Red Sea Jazz Festival. He was playing with Zawinul
and I was playing in this band I had with Bob Berg. Mike Brecker told me
about him and when we met I said: “Let’s play.” We went to my hotel room
and played for a bunch of hours, mostly standards and he was swinging. He
showed me some African s— that was amazing and then he started doing my
songs and he was singing – I had written a couple of ballads that had no vocals
and he played them singing along, singing the melody. I knew that I had to get
this cat to sing on my records, at least couple of ballads and it worked out to
be more than that. When he sings he brings in this African vibe and his bass
playing is influenced by someone who was one of my closest friends, Jaco Pastorious. Of course he has his own thing though.
What about the other bassists?
There were some players who I played with a lot, I play with Richard a lot too,
but I wanted to feature Bob Francischini as much as I could because we play a
lot on the road.
Meshell Ndegeocello comes by my gig at the 55 Bar sometimes and plays so
I wanted to use her. I’ve loved her music for years, so I asked her to play on a
couple of tunes and she did. I tried to match her so she played one with [drummers] Dave Weckl and one with Kim Thompson.
There are a lot of players on this album. Was it tricky using some many different players?
I told my producer Jim Beard that the trick was going to be making this record
sound like one record. I got both Meshell and Roy Hargrove to play on

this record too. I don’t get to play with either too much so it was really great to
have them.
There is such of variety of sounds and influences on the record. Is there any
thought about who your audience is? Because it’s tangled ball of influences.
Exactly! I’m not real worried about it. I usually go with my gut. Miles Davis
did that himself and that has always sort of been the way I go. He always said:
go with your instincts – the way you play, the way you write, just you as a musician. A lot of people have told me that, but I kind of don’t know how else to
do it.
How did you get into music?
My mom used to play a lot of classical piano, so there was
a lot of that around the house so I listened to that growing up. I played a little bit of classical piano and then
chose the guitar. For some weird reason when I was 12
years old and asked to take a few guitar lessons. I got into
it and it clicked. I didn’t get into jazz right away. It was
more blues like B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix and other rockers like Jeff Beck. I listened to a lot of Motown
growing up in Washington, D.C. too. Then when I got
into jazz I fell for it, hook line and sinker. The more I got
into it the harder it was, so I had to go back and study.
I had tried to playing along by ear to some of my mom’s
jazz records and I got lost right away.
What records?
Some Miles. Some Herbie Hancock like Maiden Voyage. I loved it but couldn’t play along, so I learned how to
read and studied some theory. But I still played in rock
bands and stuff because I didn’t think I’d be good enough
to play jazz, but then I realized that I had to go for it. It
took a lot of work – I played my ass off, and studied my ass off.
You hit the ground running, becoming a successful working musician at a
young age. Not everyone can go that route.
I really was lucky. Blood Sweat and Tears was looking for someone who could
rock, and I had done some of those gigs in Boston, just small gigs around town
in bars and in Washington when I was growing up. Also soul and some blues
gigs, so I had some background. Jazz was harder for me and I was still assimilating the language back then. So I was getting my ass kicked in a good way
with the band, because Larry Willis was a great bebopper, Jaco Pastorious was
in that band for about a month, and the cats in the horn section were writing
for Woody Herman and had been doing big band stuff. I was still getting over
the nerves of playing in front of a lot of people, and they had big audiences, not
➤
as big as they used to, but for me 50 people was a whole f—ing bunch,

so …
If crowd size is an issue, how did you feel the first time you walked onstage
with Miles Davis?
Scared to f—ing death! [laughs]
And he’s not the most patient man.
He was cool though. It was amazing and challenging. Loose as hell because
he’d just come out of retirement and he was getting as high as a motherf—er and
I was doing the same thing and worse, believe it or not. At one point Miles
tried to put me in treatment. That’s when you know you got a problem, when
Miles Davis tries to put you in treatment.
Not a lot of people can say that, and still be alive.
I know. I’ve been incredibly lucky. I’ve been sober for 23 years. It was the only
way I could go. I’m not one of those people who can just have a beer every once
in a while. Miles told me once: “It’s all or nothing at all.” So I had to go nothing at all. JW

ALL-STAR BANDS ARE a regular occurrence in the studio,
where a leader will bring in a band he could never afford to

and the great Hilton Ruiz. Sadly, this is a memorial to Ruiz
as well. Barretto is on conga throughout, except for Ruiz’s
solo “Something To Live For” and on “Strange Music.” On
that last track, unfinished at Ray’s death, the scatting Barretto is captured on a “scratch” track, imitating the conga he was to have added. The sound of the hard bop era’s
heyday is brilliantly captured here, and we’re reminded of
Barretto’s contribution on hundreds of classic recordings on
this wonderful and poignant finale.
