February - Corvette Super Sports
February 2007 Corvette Super Sports is a car club made up of Corvette owners with a passion for a fine driving machine, with the goal to participate in and support auto-related activities, such as: car shows, auto-crossing, rallies, drag racing, caravans, cruises, parades, etc. We support (N.C.C.C.) National Council of Corvette Clubs, National Corvette Museum, several social, civic, and charitable organizations. CSS is incorporated as a non-profit organization in the County of Orange, California. We welcome guests to our meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM at the "SIZZLER" Steak, Seafood & Salad Bar restaurant located at 1401 N. Harbor Blvd, Fullerton, CA 92835 (Harbor Blvd. at Brea Blvd.) Who’s Who at Corvette Super Sports Officers Board of Governors President: Greg Glodery Vice-President: Joe Orrico Secretary: Cindy Orrico Treasurer: Teresa Cruz Newsletter: Kathy Baddley Webmaster: Jan Works N.C.C.C.: Ellis Chee Donna Stewart Tom Cuccio Ann Meeuwenberg Ron DeBartolomeis Jim Cooper Sal Cruz Chairpersons Clothing-Shirts: Doug Meeuwenberg Clothing-Jackets & Hats: Shirley Jones Socials: Charity: Marietta Darke Raffle: Meeting Hostess: Linda Norris Membership/Hospitality: Donna Stewart Phone Committee Chairman: Donna Stewart Sergeant at Arms: Bill Darke Trophies/Awards: Tom Cuccio Dealer Rep: Ron DeBartolomeis Car Show Chairman: Rick Miller Car Show Co-Chair: Ron DeBartolomeis Historian: Pat & Jan Works Banquet: Don’t forget the Board Meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM. The meetings’ venue will be changed each month to add variety and the location will be announced at the monthly Club meeting. Board meetings are open to all members. We encourage you to attend and welcome your comments pro and con. Message From the President Welcome all to a new year with Corvette Super Sports. The activities have already started with our annual banquet held at the NHRA museum. Once again Linda and Vicky did an outstanding job on the event. Our racers took off for Pahrump, Nevada and made their donatation of tire rubber at Spring Mountain Raceway. The word is that Mike Baddley cut ten seconds off his time and was only three seconds behind Joe O. Someone may need to get more horsepower…soooon! Check the calendar of events for the next race days at Spring Mountain. Speaking of checking the calendar, in the near future, the monthly newsletter will be posted on the club webpage for all to view. Monthly mailings of this document will be reduced greatly to conserve mailing costs. Should any one not be equipped that new invention called a computer, we will have a limited number of newsletters available at the general meeting each month. By now most everyone has heard that we have a new club sponsor, Selman Chevrolet. This new association was brought about largely though the efforts of Ron De and Rick Miller and through the tired less work of Geno Atchison from the dealership. This new association will be good for the club, our members and our charities. The next big event will be a car show at the Selman dealership on April 14, 2007. Additional information is on the club webpage and flyers that will be available at March’s general meeting. If you were not at February’s meeting and are planning to attend March’s general meeting you may want to come a little early. February’s meeting was packed with new people and regulars. That’s it for this month…Check the calendar of events…lots of things coming up! Best Regards, Greg General Meeting Minutes, February 6, 2007 First things first: A note from the “New” Secretary: At this time, I apologize for any incorrect spellings or mistyped information. This is my first letter and I’m not familiar with ‘All’ names, faces and facts! So, please let me know of any corrections. Thank you!! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Greg opened our first official “General Meeting” of 2007 (at 7:13pm – late this time, won’t happen again, I’ll be nagging him!) and the house was packed!!! We have an official meeting due to our quorum was met. Welcome to everyone and Happy 2007! Greg humored us with his usual appreciated joke! Corvette Super Sports is very thrilled to have Merrill from Weir Canyon Chevrolet and Nick from Selman join tonight’s meeting! Thank you gentlemen for sharing our meeting with us! A bit of trivia: Greg advised us that our personal information that is computed onto the little plastic motel electronic key, is “NOT” erased after you check out!! He suggested that the keys be taken to registration upon check out and requested that the information be stripped from these cards. Thanks, Greg for your background knowledge! Regional NCCC Committee Report from Ellis Chee: a. Jan 20, Governor’s meeting. 17 clubs were present. b. Presentation of last years Regional NCCC competition awards: i. Joe Orrico won 5th, Cindy Orrico won 3rd – Joe is getting closer to wearing that skirt!!! ☺ ii. Wagon Master, Allen Morris is setting up a caravan to travel to the NCCC Convention in Nashville this coming June. You can contact Allen at 949.367.9000 or [email protected] for details. Additional details are forthcoming! The convention is June 16-22nd. Joe and Cindy will be driving out also, however, maybe not with the caravan, so please contact them if you would like to join the fun! iii. Ellis has more NCCC patches for $1.00 each. At our CSS Banquet on January 13th, a new list was distributed to ensure the roster is updated and correct – PLEASE make sure you have completed form so that we have your correct information. Through my experience, it’s pretty darn tough to contact you if we have the wrong number! A HUGE Thank you to Vicki, Linda and all others that made this night a success!! You are SO appreciated for your extended efforts! Also, it was quite touching to see the welcomed participation of our sponsors from Selman and Weir Canyon Chevrolet! We greatly thank them for the enthusiasm that they share with us. And…. On such a bright note to this….. We were honored as Geno presented CSS with a sponsorship check of $2,000.00!!! CSS, along with Selman and Weir Canyon – we are going to enjoy an awesome year!! Many, many thanks for the support! Greg presented Geno with some photographs taken of the Selman and Weir Canyon employees that attended the banquet. Ron Jobes was not present at our banquet, therefore, Greg presented him tonight with his congratulatory 5 Year Pin! Congrats, Ron!! Marrietta Darke’s Report: a. Jill Teson – At our Christmas Party at Jill’s house, we collected $185 and a check was sent to “His House”. She received a thank you letter from them for our donation! GO CSS!! Donna Stewart’s Report: (Wow – this was so impressive, so many new interests!!) a. Jeff Henninger is a former CSS President and honorary member – 34 years!!!!. He lives in Indianapolis. b. Billy Cox – friend of Ron DeB (By the way, DeBartolomeis is too long to type while chewing gum, therefore, from here forward, I now change it to DeB ☺). c. Mark Gallarda d. Merrill Strachan from Weir Canyon, one of our great sponsors. Merrill is our “Corvette Specialist at Weir!! e. 8. 9. 10. Nick Nguyen from Selman – yet another great sponsor representative, our Club representative and Corvette specialist at Selman!! f. Johnny Rocket (Simon) from Covina – friend and racing buddy of Joe & Cindy Orrico. g. Phil Arey from Huntington Beach! h. Art Galaro is Joe’s neighbor (Above)?? Teaches professional motorcycle racing. Talked his neighbor into buying a new Z06 (That would have been difficult for any of us, huh?). i. Tommy Demarca and Craig Perkins – just more friends and acquaintances from Selman Chevrolet and Geno (Gosh, aren’t we glad that Geno is so shy?) Tom is looking to purchase one of our favorite cars – um, that would be a CORVETTE! j. Brian – local business owner – looking to buy – is friends with all the other new friends listed above! k. Dennis Dickerson – he wore a Porsche shirt! That’s ok – we shouldn’t have any trouble converting him!! l. Joe Cruz – has a 1981. His daughter came with him to enjoy our meeting. “I” would like to make a comment here… most of our Newcomers came from a referral from Geno, I believe we should send Geno over to Selman Chevrolet to purchase a New CORVETTE! He certainly fits in with us! Treasurer’s Report – Teresa Cruz: a. Petty Cash = $75. b. Checking = $___________. This does NOT include our Selman $2,000.00 contribution, which will be our first 2007 deposit!! Old Business - Greg: a. Thanks again to Linda and Vicki for all their outstanding efforts and work that they continue to demonstrate throughout the years for our special events, ie. Banquets, bowling, etc. b. Selman handed out a mascot – it’s on Greg’s desk at work – a toy Corvette. – (Greg, we’d better not find out that it’s big enough to drive!!) c. Valentine’s Day bowling was last weekend. Ann stated some people were not notified and apologies were expressed. A new phone committee is being formed in hopes of this not occurring again. The event was a success – fun was had, money and fun prizes were won. d. New faces at head table: Joe Orrico is Vice President, Cindy Orrico is Secretary (That’s me!), Teresa Cruz is Treasurer. Many thanks to the previous Officers. All new Board Members stood and were recognized. e. Sometimes, I wonder what is up with this club…. But our New Years Eve party was held by, no less than Mustang Sally and his child bride Renita!! Well, at least there was no Mustang in site and there were 220 Jello Shots and a motor home parked across the street for those who lost at playing billiards (HA!). What can I say, but THANKS!!! Some couldn’t make it all the way to midnight, but those people usually felt better on New Years Day too!! For those that stayed, Scott and Renita were grateful for the 2 remaining Jello Shots for the next morning! f. Joe stated that at Spring Mountain Racing a week ago, the new Engineer for all Corvettes, Tadge, was present. He has a question and answer session about the future – naturally, he could not disclose many details, however, was encouraging that CORVETTE LIVES!! Tadge and his wife came out to the track on Sunday and were signing car parts!! A small world that it is, Joe’s employment takes him to Alaska at times and he is associated with the Corvette Club in Alaska. One of their members, Gene Augustine is staying in the area, but without ‘his’ Corvette. So…. Where there’s a WANT, there’s a way!! He actually “Rented” a new C-6 in Las Vegas, drove it to Pahrump and proceeded to race the track and truly loved every minute of it! They don’t have such luxuries in Alaska!. New Business: a. Our Car Show with Selman will be on Saturday, April 14th. Flyers are in the process of being made and will be distributed ASAP! One arrangement that would be beneficial to CSS, Selman, Weir, that we have an ability to draw in members of other clubs and successful in car shows, so PLEASE, pass the word!. Emphasis on Corvettes, but have 11. opened it up to other models… Ron DeB stated that all Corvettes, C-1 through C-6, hot rods, trucks cars, all GM, all pre 1970 Classics, and Hot Rods will be on the venue. There will be prizes for each category. Details are still being perfected! Unfortunately, time ‘not’ permitting; this will NOT be a sanctioned event. We will also have our normal Car Show at the Elk’s Club on August 18th. A deposit has been given to the Elk’s Club to hold our date. It is highly encouraged that everyone participate and we dearly need more raffle prizes, so please put your Corvette caps on and call on your friends! We will also need volunteers help with parking, etc. during the day of the show. Please – “Do the Hokie Pokie – put both feet in and volunteer! OH! And don’t forget to register ‘your’ car! Pre-Registration cost is $25.00, after that, it goes up $10.00!! Car Show Day Registration time is from 9:00 – 11:00am and the event should be concluded by 2:00pm. We are doing something new; we will be giving cash awards!! Please support this event! Estimated flyer time is the next couple weeks. If you are interested in purchasing a CSS jacket, please see Shirley Jones. WOW - Mustang Sally (Ok, Scott) is the proud owner of a HUGE CORVETTE LOGO TATTOO on his back!! What a man with dedication….. AND A HIGH PAIN TOLERANCE! Greg inquired as to who likes to golf? He would like to organize a fun fundraiser and/or social gathering. Is there any interest in pursuing further? Any volunteers? This could be a club event. No other car club to Greg’s knowledge has done this before, therefore, revenue might be grand? Geno has some interest with Selman, possible foursomes could be established. Prizes and Winners for tonight: (A few more than once!) a. b. c. 19. 20. 21. 22. 23. Ed Norris won the dinner raffle 50/50: $65 – Won by Ed Norris? Is this fixed? Current price is $25.00. Doug said he would place the order of 25.00. Please contact Doug to get your orders in! Greg advised that the next Directors meeting will be posted on the website, however, you will need to ‘go down one level’. Jan Parks will also post it on the calendar section on the web. We will have a short cruise/social gathering and dinner. All are invited, not just members. Members voted in were: Bert & Diane Weist (Yeah!) and Larry & Roylene Camp. Donna Stewart motioned the meeting be closed, Jeff Henninger seconded that motion! . May you have a very Blessed Month of February, may your love of your Corvette continue and may I someday get the nerve to get a Corvette Logo Tattoo, just like Scott’s!!! Respectfully Submitted By: Cindy Orrico – Secretary (AKA Goddess) P.S. Mark your calendars – Secretaries Day is April 25th!!!! ☺ Newsletter Editor Our goal in 2007 is to make the CSS newsletter as informative and useful to our club members as possible. We therefore look for feedback and suggestions on format, content etc. As you can see, the majority of content comes from members on planned activities as well as cruise, show and race experiences. Please submit your suggestions and article content at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you. Calendar of Events March 2007 4 Sun Pomona Swap Meet at the L. A. Corvette Racing (From the Corvette Racing website http://corvetteracing.com) Corvette Racing to Defend American Le Mans Series Championships in 2007 Corvette Racing officials announced today [1/17] that America's premier production sports car team intends to return to the American Le Mans Series in 2007 to defend its GT1 manufacturers, team and drivers championships. Corvette Racing also plans to race for its sixth GT1 class title in seven years at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "The Corvette C6.R race program continues Chevrolet's tradition of racing production-based vehicles to improve the breed," said GM Racing director Mark Kent. "The continuous exchange of information and the constant transfer of technology between the racing and production programs ensure that lessons learned on the track benefit every Corvette on the highway." Corvette Racing will test in February in preparation for the season-opening round of the 12-race ALMS series, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, on March 17, 2007. Since its debut in 1999, Corvette Racing has competed in 77 races, scoring 51 victories and 34 one-two finishes. The team has won the ALMS GT1 manufacturers championship for Chevrolet six consecutive years. Corvette Racing drivers Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta have combined to win the ALMS GT1 drivers championship five consecutive seasons. Other highlights include five GT1 class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and an overall victory in the 2001 Rolex 24 at Daytona. From the Racer’s Pit – Not Your Normal Article I believe it’s time we at CSS got some action out of our Newsletter and put Kathy Baddley to work!! So not only am I going to write this Racer’s Pit article, I encourage someone, anyone – oh, say like Ron Jobes, to write about that “Cleaning The Car” stuff, Car Show stuff! How about it Ron? (Guess we’ll see who reads this!) I admire a breathtaking clean car, I just don’t have the energy to clean one that well!! CSS is made up of many different stories of how we became Corvette lovers, whether it be the looks, the drive, the power or the need to clean something! When I first started with CSS, Ron Jobes and Gary Simmerman told me my car was dirty. Well, actually, I had just got it washed. They proceeded to ask me to pop the hood? Now, I’m thinking why pop the hood, you don’t clean the engine, do you? Well, they continued to tell me that I had water spots under the hood of my car and that I need to clean the wax off with Q-Tips! – “OH Good Grief!” My personal story is that I fell in love with the car when I saw my first one at 11 years old and bought mine when I was 50! 39 years is a long time to wait for a dream!! Now on the other hand, my amazing husband, Joe, believes anyone who buys a Corvette, buys it for “The Power and Performance” – “What Performance? Then again, I said, “Oh no – I bought it for the looks!”….. until my first Auto Cross. Who knew how the car could perform – not me! Therefore, I blossomed into as we say “A Racer” and loving it! As I have shared about Karen DeB, there is more to the car than looks alone. Karen appears to be afraid of the car, so was I, so I practiced. Karen took the Ladies Class for Auto Crossing and she practiced. Now, I guess Karen can go fast with sharp turns, but can’t take a casual drive around without a helmet. Then there’s Kathy Baddley! Until last November at Spring Mountain, Kathy had never even driven the car!! Well, that was until I threatened her with the award that I ended up giving to Karen at our banquet in January. After threatening Kathy about driving their car on the Parade Lap and getting no where with my threats, I went off to enjoy my cruise. All of a sudden I hear a horn honk and of course looked to see what idiot was honking in the grid line! WOW – to my shock, Kathy and Mike were behind me – KATHY BEHIND THE WHEEL!! Man, was I scared – SHE’S NEVER DRIVEN THE CAR BEFORE AND SHE’S BEHIND ME!!! But then, I’ll never forget the ear to ear grin on Mike’s face!!! I think that day started Mike’s Mid Life Crisis!! But then, now Mike is worried he may have to buy Kathy her own Corvette!! Geno, I smell a sale!!! Now, I don’t’ know all that mumbo jumbo about the engine parts, even though I now have on my resume that I can change brake pads in the parking lot of the Best Western Hotel in beautiful downtown Pahrump, Nevada!! But I am learning about engine parts – must be my male side – I like the engine parts rather than the cleaning ingredients! I clean enough at home and the office. And no, I’ll probably never ‘beat’ Joe’s time so he has to wear a skirt, but I truly am loving it. Joe has really become hooked and I so love to see the excitement on his face knowing he’s really gonna try to stay out of the gravel! And, it gives me the opportunity to stay in some of the saddest motels I’ve ever known! Oh, and let’s not forget about our trailer and the 19 pairs of shoes I get to take with me!!! The one thing that the Car Show enthusiasts need to understand is that it doesn’t rain in California, therefore, they get their car shows all the time. For those of us who race, it’s a seasonal thing – only in winter. At these far out located race tracks, 110 is a little too much for the tires, brakes and our bodies!! We have even started a tradition – I make and serve PBJ sandwiches, potato chips, cookies and Twinkies – it’s a given racing meal during a day of racing! So let’s see if this article ‘fires anyone up’ to write one themselves… hint, hint…. Tell us ‘your’ story. I can speak for Joe and myself, that we enjoy reading our Newsletter and I am in hopes that you all concur. So, let’s hear from you! By the way, I miss the Auto Cross Day at Fontana, Lot 12 – I will never forget that place! I miss getting beat by Bill Darke and Steve Towers, let alone Joe! But that became my racing addiction! Thank you! My goal is to have given you at least one giggle out of this. If I succeeded, I’m happy. Cindy O From the Waxer’s Detail Shop No input this month. Hope to hear about the Adam’s Wax event next month. Anyone up to writing an article? Let’s hear from you. From the Cruiser’s Log Book Confederate & Union Flags Shoeless Jill Teson lead the small contingency of CSS members to days of yesteryear as we made our way to the Civil War Re-enactment at Calico Ghost Town on 2/17/07. Jill threw herself into day including dressing for the period. Small though we were, we enjoyed the battles, costumes, food and most especially the company on this sunny and beautiful afternoon. There were some unusual sights to see that day and much to our surprise we even saw a “WANTED” poster of another CSS member! Geoff & Ginger Girvin took the lead to get us back to home grounds. We stopped in Claremont for dinner and shared stories and laughter. By the way, did you know that Geoff & Ginger met and attended high school in Claremont? Did you know the streets used to roll up at 6:00pm in those days? Thanks again to Jill and Geoff for your great driving & leadership. From the time we met until we parted company the day was relaxing and fun filled! The high tech ride up and back made interesting book ends for a trip back in time. Submitted by Lynn Miller Some Useful and Fun Stuff While experiencing a pain in “the back of the seat” with his 2004 Z06, Jim Cooper came across the following service bulletin used to solve his problem. Subject: Seat Back Twisting (Resynchronize Seat Back Recliner) #04-08-50-005 (02/26/204) Models: 1997-2004 Chevrolet Corvette Condition: Some customers may comment on the driver’s or passenger’s seat back twisting. Cause: This condition may be caused by the seat back recliner cables not releasing together. Correction: Technicians should resynchronize the seat back recliner using the following procedure. • To resynchronize the recliner actuator, perform the following steps below: o Adjust the unoccupied seat to the full forward track position. o Recline the seat to the full rearward position and release the recliner handle to lock the seat back. o Release the unoccupied seat to the full upright position and release the recliner handle to lock the seat back. This will allow both the inboard and outboard recliner mechanism to release and re-synch in the full upright position. • Check the seat back recliner mechanism for resynchronization by applying pressure with your hand to the head rest. • If the seat back twists, the following components need to be checked: • Recliner cables proper routing and function. • Recliner assemblies proper function. • Seat back frame for damage. If any condition is discovered with a component, refer to the appropriate Service Manual section in Si. Race Tire Info For those of you considering the purchase of, or already using KUMHO tires.
