We created an intimate atmosphere with the diverse topics of the talks and the cultural presentations. Presentations and workshops were placed around the main venue for the talks
and the debate, which the audience could easily go in and out of. It created opportunities
for everyone present to think together, and make action. The visitors In the food court spent
time talking about the sensitive issues of the disaster and the nuclear incident. There were
a few controversial reactions that confused the audience.
The two projects “Jumping Power Plant” and “Hope Step Post”, which Hope Step Japan!
lunched in the event were a big success. We would like to present them in a different setting
in the near future.

Hope Step Post
at Camera Japan, Rotterdam
Masaaki Oyamada initiated Hope Step Post
in March 2014. This is a post office where
guests can make a personal message to a
specific person or organization working in
the field of Japan’s disaster in 2011. From
the connections of Hope Step Japan!, we
selected six people and two organizations.
Some of them survived the tsunami, some
of them are politically or culturally involved
in issues which have been derived from the
disaster. Next to the stories about them on
the desk are papers, pens and stamps that
are free to use to make a postcard that
brigdes Japan and the Netherlands on an
intimate level. After translating the message
we sent the message card to Japan.

Jumping-Power Plant
at Camera Japan, Rotterdam
“Jumping-Power Plant” is one of
the projects that Hope Step Japan! (HSJ) initiates. It’s a group
of Japanese scientists, engineers
and creators in the Netherlands
who have been working seriously in order to realize the dream of
generating electricity by jumping.
The idea was born some decades
ago, when the team leader Moyuru
Watanabe was a small girl, upon
hearing adults concerns about the
nuclear power plant in her neighbourhood. The idea of generating
power by jumping instead of using
nuclear power passed through her
mind. When the disaster struck in
2011 in Japan she suddenly remembered the idea and started to
think seriously about how to make
it work.
In March 2014 the team presented the initial idea at Hope Step
Japan! event. Since then the team
has been experimenting and researching to make the dream happen.
November in 2014 we successfully created the prototype of the
“Jumping-Power Plant “ for a
small trampoline, which was presented 2015 version of Hope Step
Japan!.
Poster designed by Masaaki Oyamada and Masaya Takeda
Jumping-power Plant is aiming to raise awareness in innovative technology by generating
energy that contributes to a safer and sustainable society. We hope the Jumping-Power Plant
demonstration gives you a chance to have fun
and learn about the latest technology.

About Hope Step Japan!
HOPE STEP JAPAN! is a collective of Japanese residents in the Netherlands who
are concerned with issues that have arisen since the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, called 311 in Japan. Most of its members are working in
creative fields such as art, design, dance and music.
HOPE STEP JAPAN! was formed after 311 and since the first anniversary of the
disaster we have organized various fundraising and awareness events in different locations. During our exhibitions and cultural events, we invite speakers such
as working professionals from different fields or concerned citizens in and from
Japan, to talk about the most important issues related to post 311 Japan from
different angles.
Our mission is to create a platform for people who are concerned about and willing to learn and be connected to the issues related to 311. By studying different
subjects and rethinking our current living conditions together, we want to apply the
findings to our daily life and discover positive steps forward that can be relevant
beyond any borders or nationalities. We hope not only for Japan but also for the
entire globe to build a safer environment for future generations.
