Call for Auction Plants
Region 12 needs your participation in our Fall Auction to be held Saturday, October 14,
2006 in Tallahassee, hosted by the Tallahassee Daylily Society. The spring and fall
auctions are the only fundraisers for Region 12 and we need everyone’s participation.
This will be my final auction as your Ways and Means Chair for the past 4 years. It’s
been fun and I am hoping to make my final auction a huge success and I need your help!
A PowerPoint presentation will be shown of the auction plants and a printed list will be
available for handout.
Deadline for donations is October 7, 2006. Thanks for your generosity!

RVP’s Message
Joe Agosta, Tallahassee, FL
Another season is behind
us, but the memories of the
gardens and of the visits
with old and new daylily
friends remain. The spring
regional so graciously
hosted by the Bay Area
Daylily Society was the first
spring regional for that area
of our state. Although the
dry weather was horrendous the gardens shone with the beauty that only the
love of very dedicated gardeners could produce. The
BADS folks may be our newest club, but they are
already pros at organizing well-run events. Thanks
BADS.
Long after our gardens peaked this spring the AHS
national convention was held on Long Island, New York
in mid July. For those Floridians that attended it was a
chance to relive the spring bloom peak. All of the
gardens on tour were truly exquisite. Region 12
hybridizers were well represented in all the gardens.
The garden culture was excellent with some hybridizers
remarking that they had never seen some of their
cultivars growing so well. In addition to the usual many
awards gathered by our talented hybridizers and
reported previously, we were honored to have the
Helen Field Fischer award for service to the Society
presented to Wayne Johnson of Winter Park and the
Region 12 Service Award presented to Jean Norris of
Sanford. Both of these folks have spent many years in
service to Region 12 and AHS. Next time you see
them personally thank them for their service.
My term as your RVP is rapidly coming to an end. My
thanks to the officers and committee chairs for doing a
great job and making my job a lot easier. I thank you
again for the opportunity to serve, and I know that your
election of Elaine Alito as your new RVP will keep
Region 12 moving forward. Please accord her the
same great level of support you have given me.
I have one more effort to initiate before moving aside.
At the spring regional it was mentioned to me that we,
as AHS members, do a good job of promoting daylilies
amongst ourselves, but do not do near as well when
promoting daylilies to the general public. Obviously we
are not emphasizing enough one of the stated purposes
of the Society to “promote, encourage, and foster the
development of the genus Hemerocallis and public
interest therein.” To that end I am collecting a list of
Region 12 members who would participate in a daylily
speaker’s bureau. The bureau would serve to connect
groups looking for gardening speakers with a nearby
daylily speaker. Material for a presentation will be
created as part of this effort. If you are able to join
this effort please let me know.
Our fall meeting will be held in Tallahassee in October.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Best wishes for continued gardening success.

RPD/Editor’s Message
Virginia Gregory, Orlando, FL
Can it really be time
to be looking back
on another bloom
season? Each year
seems to fly past
faster than the last.
On the other hand
we are just getting
ready to start
another club season
with all the anticipation of hearing and seeing guest
speakers, buying and trading daylilies, and encouraging
new members to join in our obsession.
I encourage all of you to find ways to bring daylilies to
the attention of the general public and to help increase
membership. Some outlets may be obvious such as
volunterring to speak to a garden club or working with
your local newspaper to write an article about daylilies.
But other avenues may take a little more digging. For
at least one year the North Florida Daylily Society had
a billboard along a major highway advertising their
show. The cost - nothing. Some research found that a
company was willing to advertise community events for
free in a very visual way. I’m sure the incoming RPD
will appreciate any suggestions and assistance you can
offer in this area.
Well, its hard to believe that this is my eighth and final
newsletter as Editor. I could not have done it without all
of the wonderful people who volunteered to write
articles, supply photographs, send club reports, submit
business/committee reports, and provide all the other
pieces of information that come together in the newsletter. My heartfelt thanks goes out to each and every
one of you! I hope you will afford the same outpouring
of knowledge and information to the next Editor.
Warmest regards,
Virginia

Director’s Message
David Kirchhoff, Sanford, FL
The season began with a
marvelous regional meeting conducted by the Bay
Area Daylily Society.
Every garden, every
cultivar, the busses, the
meals, the meetings and
attendees were groomed,
grown, scheduled, prepared, conducted and
behaved beyond compare.
Those gardens in the Bay
Area displayed cultivars
grown to perfection from hybridizers throughout the
country. Before May had become June, indelible daylily
memories were made which will last a lifetime, to share
and to treasure. Local area shows and events garnered
rave reviews.
I attended the most recent meeting of the American
Hemerocallis Society Board of Directors on July 13,
2006, at the Melville Marriott Hotel in Huntington, NY.
The Long Island Daylily Society hosted the meeting, in
conjunction with the spectacular AHS National Convention. Wow, what an event! Complete minutes of the
meeting can be found in The Daylily Journal.
One crowning aspect came at the end of the convention. On July 14, Region 12’s indefatigable Jean Norris
became the 15th Floridian to be awarded the AHS
Service Award. Congratulations, Jean, and thanks for
forty years of dedicated service to the AHS and Region
12.
On July 15, for the annual AHS Awards Banquet, AHS
Awards & Honors Chairman Rich Rosen assembled a
Power Point presentation of all the award-winning
daylilies. Image after image of beautiful daylilies
flashed on the screen as he announced the winners.
The final award at the annual banquet is the American
Hemerocallis Society’s gold medal for outstanding and
distinguished service by a member. This year, the
winner of the Helen Field Fischer Gold Medal is Region
12’s own Wayne Johnson, from Winter Park. Congratulations, Wayne, and thanks for nearly forty years of
service!
Region 12’s quota of Garden Judges to members is 3%
Page 6
less than the goal of 15%, so there is room for more.
Proudly, ours’ is the highest ratio of judges to membership in the AHS. Garden and Exhibition Judges are vital
to our success. We urge folks to become involved in
judging. It is educational, interesting and a way to meet
other daylily friends.
Our membership committee under John Holland, with
Dr Bob Stassen has completed a survey completed
from 1,012 members, with full analysis underway. The
AHS is making a huge effort exceed members’ expectations. A number of new ideas are near fruition. We
urge every member to concentrate on bringing a new
member into the society each year.
I am impressed with the dedication and hard work
accomplished on all levels of the AHS. The board
members work well together, and everyone is determined that our society remain vital and continue to
grow. We appreciate members’ input, and love hearing
from you.
Cheers!
David

Eddy Scott’s Countryside Daylilies
Luane Mikell, Cross City, FL
Welcome to Eddy Scott’s Countryside Daylilies where
the look of daylilies is constantly changing.
It all really started back in the late 1800s when Cindy’s
great grand daddy, John Hance O’steen, homesteaded
the property now know as Countryside Daylilies. Mr.
O’steen was the South’s youngest Confederate soldier—he joined at the tender age of 7—and became a
mail carrier. Mr. O’steen was then mustered out at the
age of 9. The family’s antique syrup kettle, cane
grinder and split rail fence, still have their place on the
old homestead.
In 1995, Eddy and Ottis Houston went into business together as Countryside Daylilies. Mr. Houston did the garden sales for visitors and Eddy did the catalog sales due
to his busy work schedule. Together they were on tour
for the 1997 National Convention and several Region 12
tours. Three years ago they decided go separate ways
but continue to share the business name. Ottis has played
a big part in helping Eddy get his start in his love for
daylilies and they continue to be friends.
This year, Eddy opened his garden to visitors during
weekends in May and the 1st weekend in June. With
blue and white peacocks, 2 Koi ponds and a spectacular view of his garden area, Eddy, Cindy, Amber and
Nicole were there to greet visitors with friendly smiles.
While Eddy is a fairly well-known, up and coming,
“younger” Florida hybridizer, many outside of Florida
still do not know of him or know of his creations. He
focuses a lot on far crosses versus near crosses. Eddy
strives to create the unusual in the forms of UFs and
crispates while focusing on eyes and edges.
Amber, Eddy, Cindy and Nicole Scott
Married to Cindy in 1983, the Scott’s have twin collegeage daughters, Amber and Nicole. In junior high they
both became Exhibition and Garden Judges and they
helped out a lot over the years in the daily operation of
the business. They have earned several State and
National Awards in the areas of Floriculture and
Nursery Operations through the Future Farmers of
America (FFA). Currently sophomores at Santa Fe
Community College, they are not involved in daylilies
nearly as much, but do help out if really needed.
Eddy is a Manager in the Design section of the Florida
Department of Transportation in Lake City. In 1994,
Donald Norris who worked there too invited Eddy to a
Daylily meeting at the Columbia County Library in downtown Lake City. It was the December meeting and Eddy,
Cindy, Amber and Nicole brought home around 50 gift
plants and planted them in their vegetable garden. With
the first blooms that spring Eddy was hooked on hems.
Page 8
With changing goals to concentrate more on hybridizing,
Eddy recently reduced his garden from 1,300 cultivars to
around 700. He now focuses on his seedling crop with
22,000 seedlings last year. His aim is to choose only the
very best for further evaluation and introduction.
‘Red Eye Gravy’
H. Red Eye Gravy
This is one of my personal favorites. With a bold red eye
on cream petals and a thick
bold red edge, its fragrance is
delightful while looking down
into its green throat.
H. Cracks in Concrete
This is another fine example
of Eddy’s work with heavy
sculpting and heavy substance
on yellow with light pink highlighted petals. With high bud
count and strong scapes, CC
‘Cracks in Concrete’
earned a purple ribbon at the
2006 Central Florida Daylily Exhibition.
Region 12 Newsletter
Eddy Scott’s Countryside Daylilies,
H. Tropical Disturbance is a fine example of a crispate
UFO with a big dark maroon eye and green throat. It is
also very fragrant.
continued
continues his work toward illusive blue daylily.
Eddy and Cindy are very active in the Bell FFA Alumni,
every year they have a big feed, with square dancing, a
cake decorating contest and a cake auction that raises
several thousand dollars. They also sponsor a daylily
fundraiser and plant sale. Half of all the monies collected go to the FFA chapter for scholarships. This is
something y’all have to check out.
‘Tropical Distrubance’
Eddy is still striving for the “unreachable” blue daylily
like many others, but many of his creations, such as H.
Cindy’s Tie Dye, are stunning!
‘Squidward’
Back in September of 2005, Eddy gave a talk to the
kids at Bell Elementary. He took some slides and
showed them as part of the presentation. Well, let me
tell you, those kids came up with eight new names for
his intros. Above is one that Eddy plans to introduce in
the near future, and it will be called H. Squidward.
What will kids think of next? Notice the “tentacles.”
‘Cindy’s Tie Dye’
As time goes by, his dog Beauty, will continue to
“oversee” the work being done and continue to greet
visitors, young and old alike, to Countryside Daylilies.
Cindy’s Tie Dye is a cream UF crispate cascade
spatulate with an etched purple lavender eye and heavy
purple lavender edge with very green throat, fragrant.
Cindy’s Tie Dye has prolific blooming habits and often
provides a large bouquet of multiple flowers open at
once. It received a 2004 Junior Citation award.
Another one of Eddy’s favorites is H. Blue In The
Face with its bubbly purple edge, lavender purple eye
and pink/lavender blooms is simply divine.
Currently, Eddy introduces between 15-20 cultivars
each year depending on how many he has to offer. One
of his goals is to increase eyes and edges at the same
time. While he has no favorite color or shape, Eddy

two awards have been given on occasion. A dual award to two members of the same

Chairman by mail or email. Nominations are due by September 1st for the upcoming

Play in the Dirt
Floyd Sewell, Jacksonville, FL
This January and February, while it was cool, we pulled
up every plant and put in new soil amendments. Three
changes were needed to last summer’s soil formula; a)
substitute magnesium
instead of manganese
sulfate, which is more for
keeping the yellow out of
palm trees, b) Use Farland
Professional Formula 3B
mix 2.8 cu ft (purchased
from BWI – North Apoka 1407-884-0242), which has
Canadian sphagnum fertilizer (45%) processed pine
bark, perlite and vermiculite (this eliminates tossing out
bags of each), c) double shredded pine bark to 100 lbs
per 100 sq ft. to give our sandy soil more texture. The
garden really took off this spring.
Last summer, yes in the July heat, I loaded up my 4
gallon back pack with my favorite liquid solutions. I
had forgotten that each gallon weighs 8.3 lbs, so in
attempting to step up on a wall in our back yard, I fell
into my neighbor’s yard instead, looking like some

fall I had installed a Dosatron non-electric D8R 40

Apply to be an AHS Historic Daylily Display Garden
Ken Cobb, AHS Historian via Kay Smith, Indian Rocks Beach, FL
After a unanimous
vote by the AHS Board
of Directors during
their summer 2006
meeting, daylily display
garden owners (or representatives/liaisons if
the garden is public) can
now apply for their gar‘Sunset’ (1931)
dens to become AHS
Historic Daylily Display Gardens. Historic daylilies are
defined as all daylily species plus daylily cultivars registered with the AHS on or before 1970. Gardens must
contain a representative collection of historic daylilies.
Every ten years (2010, 2020, etc.) thereafter the cutoff
date for registered cultivars will be advanced by ten years.
For example, on 1/1/2010, the registration cutoff will advance from on or before 1970 to on or before 1980.
Daylilies must be properly
labeled according to cultivar
name, hybridizer, and year
of registration (or species
name). Historic daylilies
may be displayed in a separate bed (chronologically, by
hybridizer, or as desired);
historic daylilies may also be
intermingled among modern
‘Pink Charm’ 1940
daylilies and companion plants as long as they are properly labeled. As a guideline, it is recommended that gardens grow a minimum of 50-100 daylilies comprising historic cultivars or a combination of species and historic
cultivars to qualify. In this way, small private gardens
will be encouraged to apply for
AHS Historic Daylily Display
Garden status, encouraging
owners of small private gardens
to participate (and thereby help
preserve the historic daylily
gene pool).
AHS Historic Daylily Display
Gardens should contain an
owner-provided sign containing
the words “AHS Historic Day‘Laughing Clown’ (1958) lily Display Garden.”
Fall 2006
Daylily display garden
owners (or representatives/liaisons if the garden is public) must be
AHS members in good
standing and must continue to maintain/renew
their AHS membership
in good standing. The
‘Tinker Bell’ 1954
garden owner or liaison would fill out the AHS Historic Daylily Display Garden application form and submit it following the process
in place for conventional AHS Display Gardens. The
initial application form as well as renewal application form
will be available soon on the AHS web site under AHS
Historic Daylily Display Gardens.
The RVP or RVP’s
representative must
visit gardens applying
for AHS Historic Daylily Display Garden
status, and then recommend whether or
not the garden meets
the criteria for ap‘Double Talk’ 1966
proval. Once the garden is initially approved as an AHS Historic Daylily Display Garden, the owner/liaison would then annually apply
for renewal.
Garden owners/liaisons can apply for their
gardens to become
conventional AHS Display Gardens, AHS
Historic Daylily Display Gardens, or both.
Existing guidelines for
AHS Display Gardens
‘Green Tarantula’ 1970
would extend to apply
for AHS Historic Daylily Display Gardens. The initial application requires two slides/photos in hard copy (i.e., not
electronic and not CD) form. Computer printed photos
are acceptable.
Rules for AHS Display Gardens would apply and extend
to AHS Historic Daylily Display Gardens.

Minutes of the Region 12
Spring Business Meeting
Linda Sample, Tampa, FL
The meeting was called to order by RVP Joe Agosta on
May 13, 2006 at the Clearwater Holiday Inn Select at
7:00 p.m. The Bay Area Daylily Society was thanked
for their efforts in hosting their first spring meeting in
grand fashion.
AHS officers present were introduced as follows:
Region 8 Director Ottis Houston, Region 12 Director
David Kirchhoff, and past Region 12 Director and RVP
Jean Norris. Current Region 12 officers were introduced and members from CFDS, NFDS, Sunbelt,
Tallahassee, Suwannee Valley, and BADS were
recognized along with visitors from Alabama and
Kentucky. Also introduced was RPD, Region 10 Gary
Bunch.
There being no additions or corrections to the minutes
of the Fall 2005 meeting, they were accepted as
published in the newsletter.
The treasurer’s report was presented by Opal Howell
who stated our current balance at $24,294.89. This
includes our checking account, youth fund, and CD.
Her report will be filed for review.
A membership status report for our region was reviewed by RVP Agosta with the sad knowledge of a
loss of close to 100 Region 12 AHS members in the last
3 years. As of March 2006 our current membership is
363. Discussions are ongoing regarding ways to
promote daylilies to the public in addition to our yearly
exhibitions during the season. Public forums and talks
at city or county venues and presentations at other local
garden clubs during the rest of the year are two
suggestions mentioned. Also, the few clubs not yet on
line were heartily encouraged to complete their website
for public knowledge and the good of the region.
Regional meeting host clubs were announced:
Fall 2006 – Tallahassee, Oct 13 – 14
Spring 2007 – Sunbelt
Fall 2007 – Jacksonville
Spring 2008 – to be announced
Remarks from Regional Dir. David Kirchhoff began
with thanks to BADS for a great meeting and support-
Page 14
ing our RVP’s call for diligent work on recruiting new
AHS members. He acknowledged the money available
in our youth fund and encouraged us to recruit new
members in the 20 – 30 year old age range.
RPD Virginia Gregory began her remarks with encouragement to complete and post our Popularity Poll votes
before the Sept 1 deadline. She reminded us to realize
that it is a wonderful tool for new members to have
greater success in their gardens with locally happy
daylilies. She then credited the many contributors to
the newsletter as being responsible for helping our
newsletter to be more informative and enjoyable.
There was no Unfinished Business.
New Business: Copies of the 2006 Budget were
circulated for review. After a short discussion a motion
to accept the budget as presented was made by Marie
Phillippi and seconded by Wilhelmina Hopper. It was
approved by voice vote.
Nominating Committee chair Virginia Gregory along
with committee members Fern Johnson and Henry
Matutino announced their choice of Elaine Alito as our
next RVP. There being no other nominations, a motion
was made by Ottis Houston and seconded by David
Kirchhoff. to close the nominations. The motion
passed. The motion to accept the nomination of Elaine
Alito as Region 12 RVP by acclimation was made by
Virginia Gregory and seconded by Henry Matutino
passed and the group welcomed their new RVP.
Elaine Alito thanked the members for their vote of
confidence and Joe Agosta for his valuable service to
the region. She stressed the importance of attracting
and keeping new members in our region and individual
clubs, and supported our decision to continue the color
version of our newsletter on the website and use our
funds for other things more worthy of investment.
Members were encouraged to contact her for any
comments or questions.
Jean Norris suggested that we explore the possibility of
funding rust research by a worthy college student. Jay
Charba was asked to look into this possibility and report
to us at the Fall Meeting.

RVP Agosta then suspended the order of business and
Elaine Alito introduced Lynn Purse from Pittsburg

The third annual Bill Munson Hybridizer Award was
then announced.

1st runner up – #1 Ottis Houston
2nd runner up – #35 John Kinnebrew
3rd runner up – #17 Joe Agosta
4th runner up – #15 Mary Ann Houston
A check for $100 will be awarded to the winner. Ottis
Houston was thanked for his efforts in organizing and
encouraging this award. Thanks were also extended to
Mark Headley and Dwain Miller for their efforts in
growing such a great group of 36 seedlings for us to
enjoy.
Dwain then presented the Bill Munson Hybridizer Bed
sign to Richard Page, president of the Sunbelt club who
will host next years’ spring regional.
After the program amid much anticipation the winning
name was drawn for the daylily quilt designed and
assembled by Sandy Soderberg and Linda Sample.
Opportunity tickets for the quilt were sold to benefit
Region 12 and Linda Sample announced that a check
would be presented to the regional treasurer for

bloom season, the show being a week later than usual,
and on large exhibitor not exhibiting because the show

Marion Hawks placed the awards at the show. The
show was setup by Carl Brady, Gloria Harris, Greene
and Marion Hawks and Tom Dickson. Elizabeth
Braxton and Ashley Maacks assisted the above five in
breaking down the show. Gloria Harris handled Clerks,
Placement, Tabulation of Sweepstakes and was always
there when needed. Carl Brady, Tom Dickson, and
Mollie Klemas contributed plants for the highly successful plant sale conducted almost exclusively by
