You look…
a bit ruff.
A cliché we know, but time really
does seem to fly. It’s hard to believe
as we sit here in the middle of
Sheffield, about to press the print
button on the biggest comedy
festival brochure we’ve ever had,
that a year has passed since last
time. It’ll be Christmas before you
know it, and we’ll all be moaning
about how quick the year’s gone.
Well we’ve decided. It’s time to stop moaning.
Oh we know times are hard, and friends are few, we can read. We hear of austerity measures,
of job losses and cuts, of phone hacking and blagging. We know that June was freezing and
that Blue didn’t get anywhere in The Eurovision Song Contest. We know that your iPhone
keeps dropping calls, and that you’ve had to start saving up for a holiday you might be able
to take sometime in 2016. We’re as amazed as you are that Tom won The Apprentice, and as
indifferent as you as to who Katie Price is living with. And we know, yes we know, that no
matter what you want to call it, both Sheffield teams are in the Third Division.
But do you know what? If you put a hat and a pair of glasses on a greyhound, everything
seems a little brighter. So that’s what we did.
Loads of shows, loads of venues, loads of laughter and loads of fun, with a picture of a dog
called Big Ron plastered all over the city.
This is Grin Up North.

since winning ‘City Life Comedian of the Year’ in 2000,
having starred in Ken Loach’s film ‘Looking for Eric’,
hosted his own daily afternoon radio show on Sony Award
winning Key 103, starred as Young Kenny in the hugely
successful ‘Phoenix Nights’ and he recently performed on
Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

The University of Sheffield is proud to be
supporting the Grin Up North Sheffield
Comedy Festival. Cathy Shrank, Professor
of Renaissance & Tudor Literature,
and Karen Harvey, Senior Lecturer in
Cultural History at the University of
Sheffield, present ‘Women, Wine
and Wit’.
‘Can women be funny like men?’
This was the question asked by critics
after the 2011 film release Bridesmaids.
Join us for a conversation about the
gendered nature of wit. How did humour
change as society became more ‘refined’?
Was it possible for a woman to be witty?
And if so, how do we recover this ‘hidden’
history? The talk will explore the changing
nature of humour and the relationship
between wit and satire.
The event is free but ticketed. Tickets are available from
the University of Sheffield Students’ Union Box Office,

Daliso Chaponda is an African comedian but his
comedy career has been built on jokes about the insane
behaviour of Westerners. He still thinks Westerners are
crazy but for his latest show he’s focusing his humorous
eye on Africa. Westerners are insane but to be perfectly
honest, Africans are even crazier. Corruption, tribalism,
colonialism, HIV epidemics, absolute dictatorships, ivory
smuggling, witch doctors...
