We are very happy to see print shops use our products and technologies to explore their creativity and develop new ideas. In order to satisfy the high demand for finished print products in its typically short-run production, Druckhaus Mainfranken decided last year to install the diVar digital coating technology on its premises in Marktheidenfeld (see CT edition 14/2014). Since then, the industrial print shop has not just enjoyed the benefits of the new technology, it is already thinking about possibilities of extending it. Moreover, the digital technology opens up a host of new creative possibilities in graphic design. Martin Bruttel, Managing Director of colordruck Baiersbronn, was a guest at one of our Touch & Feel Experience Events at Günter Thomas in Gelsenkirchen, where we introduced customers to our Relief coating technology. Bruttel was so excited about the technology that he presented it to a team of Jägermeister for a special gift packaging of the premium liqueur brand – with great success. The project was realised in a minimum of time, thanks to the close collaboration between Jägermeister, colordruck Baiersbronn and Schmid Rhyner. Today, the finished packaging can be found in stores everywhere and stands out clearly from rival products thanks to its innovative design. Contact us and tell us your packaging ideas. Let’s work together to develop the perfect product for you. Yours sincerely, Jakob Rohner Digital coating technology passes first-year test with flying colours The world’s first large-format digital coating machine dmax was installed a year ago at Druckhaus Mainfranken in Marktheidenfeld, Germany; from the very first day, the machine consistently met the high productivity requirements of an industrial print shop. For the owner, the dmax means new and exciting finishing options, high productivity and cost savings. The underlying digital coating technology diVar was developed and patented by Schmid Rhyner. The Swiss coating manufacturer cooperated with Steinemann Technology to design and build the dmax in a minimum of time. Druckhaus Mainfranken (DM) is a niche printer specialising in short-run jobs. In 2008 the company began to finish print products like business cards, postcards, magazine covers and posters with full-surface UV coating. To this end, DM purchased the Colibri offline coating machine by Steinemann; the new product lines were so successful that the first coating machine was soon followed by a second one of the same type. The DM group was certain that the trend towards digital media would lead to an increased demand for finished print products. ‘The pressure is on, so we have to produce tactile surfaces of exceptional quality. On the other hand, we may also benefit from new opportunities, because electronic equipment can’t deliver this kind of quality’, explains Ulrich Stetter, Managing Director of Druckhaus Mainfranken. His conclusion was corroborated by a study of Stuttgart Media University that discovered great potential for spot coatings. These developments prompted the purchase ‘Electronic equipment can’t create tactile surfaces’, of the first two digital coating machines in says Ulrich Stetter, Managing Director of Druckhaus 2010 and 2011, which allowed DM to spotMainfranken. coat its staple short-run jobs. Increasing In the beginning, however, the technology was still largely untested. To be sure that jobs could actually be finished as promised, DM offered only a limited range of products at first. In the meantime, the company has grown in confidence and extended its product range to include finished folders and magazine covers, which it is now able to process thanks to the larger format of the new machine. DM’s main customer, online vendor Flyeralarm, was quick to add the new products to its own catalogue. demand led to the purchase, in 2014, of another, faster machine. However, these machines did not meet with unqualified approval from DM’s customers in terms of their cost-benefit In just one pass with a single coating, DM can ratio and turnaround times. Also, the limited now apply very different coating quantities format meant that some products could not for spot, full-surface, relief and matt effects. These options are in particular be finished at all. That is why in 2013, DM began discussing ‘It’s amazing what you demand by third-party custhe possibility of developing can do with coatings if tomers. The new Stetter delightedly. ers can experiment with the technology was to boost effinew technology to their heart’s ciency in order to satisfy the content, much to Ulrich Stetter’s pleasure: ever growing market demand. The success of the project hinged on the partners’ ability to ‘The graphic designers are much more creative capitalise on the experience of a manufacturer than we technicians could have imagined, and they took to the new machine very quickly. It’s amazing what you can do with coatings if you use them to best effect.’ Due to the great interest of the market in the new technology, DM frequently receives visitors from other print shops who want to see the dmax in operation. We are very grateful to Mr Stetter and his team for their support. We are also very pleased that DM is thinking about making the finishing options of the dmax available to even more customers by automatically generating coating forms, and about further extending its range of services. of conventional coating machines and ensure an optimal compatibility of coatings and print heads. The aim was to coat entire print sheets (75 x 105 cm) at industrial speeds and to optimize the operating concept. The controls were positioned according to DM’s wishes, and an inspection table was mounted directly to the machine. After an initial test run at Steinemann in St. Gallen, Switzerland, the machine was installed at the DM site in Marktheidenfeld in 2014. Area Manager Johannes Barthelmes stresses that ‘from the first day, the operation of the machine was extraordinarily stable.’ ‘We were able to solve all problems quickly and easily’, explains Sebastian Liebler, Team Manager Print Finishing. Area Manager Johannes Barthelmes and Team Manager Sebastian Liebler evaluate the print results. Setting up the machine takes no more than 15 minutes, and jobs that had the other digital coating machines working at full capacity in a three-shift operation can now be printed within a three-quarter shift. There are no downtimes, and the ease of operation is exemplary. The dmax requires minimal cleaning, consumes very little solvent and delivers consistent quality due to being less sensitive to the substrate than other machines. All this not only increases the run length but also shortens the turnaround time to 2-3 days and delivers higher quality end products. Tactile gift packaging for Jägermeister The gift packagings of Jägermeister’s U.S. edition have been finished with innovative coatings by Schmid Rhyner since 2013, allowing customers to enjoy unique mattglossy effects combined with a tactile experience. Jägermeister, the world’s largest premium liqueur brand, was developed by Curt Mast in 1934 and has since been produced by premium liquor manufacturer Mast-Jägermeister SE in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The company has more than 700 employees and is represented in over 100 countries worldwide. In the course of its search for a special gift packaging, Jägermeister commissioned its business partner Konverdi to investigate various finishing options. It was the packaging printers at colordruck Baiersbronn who introduced Konverdi to the Relief coating from Schmid Rhyner’s Touch & Feel series, with great success. For the past three years, colordruck Baiersbronn has been relying on Schmid Rhyner as a supplier of waterbased and UV coatings. ‘We appreciate the innovative power and the good cooperation with the Swiss coating manufacturer’, says Martin Bruttel, managing director of colordruck. The German packaging printer was given an in-depth introduction to the new technology during the Touch & Feel Experience Event at Günter Thomas in Gelsenkirchen (see Coating Ticker editions 11/2013 and 12/2013 for details on this event). In the course of the subsequent conceptualization and implementation of the project, colorduck relied on the active support of Schmid Rhyner and its partner Saueressig Flexo. Bruttel praises Schmid Rhyner’s teamwork: ‘Once we ex- plained our requirements for the packaging, Schmid Rhyner did a great job coordinating all necessary activities to implement the project’. The process steps ranged from producing the coating plate at Saueressig and learning about the requirements of the anilox roller to supervising the actual printing process. Horst Fellner, Sales Manager Germany at Schmid Rhyner, notes that this project furnishes yet more proof of the stability of the Touch & Feel system: ‘colordruck mastered the system after the first technical demonstration. Touch & Feel can be set up quickly and delivers reproducible results every time.’ Jägermeister and Konverdi were very pleased with the final result and with the tactile effects of the relief coating. UV facts – parameters for food packaging Authorities around the world are defining safety criteria for materials that come into contact with food in order to ensure consumer safety. Such materials also include packaging in direct and indirect contact with foodstuffs. Ordinances and laws are passed worldwide so that consumers have no concerns when eating packaged food. Some of these regulations apply directly to the printing industry. For instance, the framework regulation (EC) 1935/2004 specifies the basic parameters for articles that are intended to come into contact with food. There is, however, no specific European regulation pertaining to printing inks. The Swiss Consumer Goods Ordinance (Bedarfsgegenständeverordnung) 817.023.21 (section 8b) specifies printing inks that are not intended for direct contact with food. It defines approved substances and raw materials on whitelists. Ink migration of up to 10mg/dm2 is allowed if no other specific migration limit is defined. In the USA, on the other hand, printing inks are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), provided only the unprinted side of the packaging comes into contact with food and there is no discernible migration. Food manufacturers frequently pass the responsibility for safe packaging on to the packaging manufacturer. The packaging manufacturer must select suitable materials, control the process parameters during production and provide appropriate evidence of packaging safety. As a supplier of print coatings, we support our customers in choosing suitable products for specific applications. Our development team selects the raw materials for every formulation with great care and experience. A team of Schmid Rhyner experts consisting of regulatory specialists, application engineers and developers is available to support customers throughout their production process. In addition to offering basic training, the team Schmid Rhyner also supports and advises print shops in the production of sensitive packaging. Moreover, it offers information on relevant regulations, organises laboratory tests and develops solutions in collaboration with the customers. I quickly developed an interest in marketing and began to take extra classes in this subject. After graduating from university, I looked for an internship position in a marketing department and found the ideal opportunity at Schmid Rhyner. I began my marketing internship on 1 September 2014. After a brief orientation period, I was soon able to take on challenging tasks – both strategic and operational – and gather valuable experience. Schmid Rhyner’s international orientation and character as a medium-sized company allowed me to become acquainted with a very broad range of activities. My experience working at Schmid Rhyner has confirmed my interest in marketing and prompted me to set the course for my future career. I look forward to continuing on at Schmid Rhyner as Junior Marketing Manager after the end of my internship, and to tackling new and challenging tasks. Strong presentation at PRINT CHINA 2015 Exciting interactions with 170 new contacts For the first time, Schmid Rhyner was exhibiting at PRINT CHINA in Guangdong, the largest printing tradeshow in China, to further build up its brand image. 180’000 visitors were interested in the offerings of 1’300 exhibitors from prepress and services to consumables, printing and converting. Gulf Print & Pack in Dubai is the Middle East region’s platform for the commercial and package printing industry with almost 12’000 visitors in 2015. Schmid Rhyner and its agent Pro-Chem Trading were overwhelmed by the great interest of customers, printing houses, packaging producers and finishers for its latest products. Long queues to discuss potential projects indicated this success. Next to its broad range of UV coatings, the team presented specialties such as the tactile Touch & Feel coatings like 3D Evolution. Those products enable the packaging supply chain to differentiate its packaging design in a cost-effective manner – also for sensitive packaging. Low Migration is increasingly requested in the Middle East and GCC for multinationals as well as special finish coatings on flexible packaging for the food industry. The team is therefore looking forward to the next Gulf Print & Pack. Schmid Rhyner’s booth was highly frequented and the tactile Touch & Feel coatings like SoftTouch Dual Cure as well as the low migration range for sensitive packaging was highly appreciated. Packaging printers placed immediate orders and additionally announced interest in working on new projects. The upcoming weeks will be busy with following up on the fruitful contacts reinforced and made at the show.
