THE BOEC NEWSLETTER
2016
The BOEC at 40!
T
he BOEC was launched in May
1976 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in Colorado. The
first Board of Trustees included Aris
Sophocles (a doctor at the
Breckenridge Medical Center), Kim
Batcheller (the Town
Attorney) and Olav
Pedersen (founder of “Ski
for Light”). Gene Dayton,
whose outdoor program for
people with disabilities was
the precursor to the BOEC,
served as the first staff
Director.
Also in 1976, the Town of
Breckenridge leased to
BOEC the F&D Placer, the
site of the old town
reservoir at the base of Peak 9. An old
cabin at the Henderson mine, dating
from the 1930’s, was relocated to the
F&D site to serve as our sole
programming facility, save for a few
teepees scattered around the site. The
staff was all-volunteer, serving
participants with mainly
developmental delays and visual
impairments.
The downhill ski program began in
1981. “Sit-skiing” involved
pulling people (mainly people
with paraplegia) in sleds up
small sections of ski runs and
letting them “ski/sled” down
about 200 yards. BOEC ran its
Sit Ski Program at Ski Cooper
for one season and the
program was relocated to
Breckenridge the next year.
Over the next few years,
BOEC rapidly emerged as one
of the true innovators in

Future,” the 2016–2017 BOEC Capital
Campaign designed to address the
growing demand for our programs and
our long term sustainability. The
campaign will focus on a number of
major new projects and initiatives
designed to meet current and long term
needs in the areas of field staff housing;
program and administrative support
facilities; program activity sites and

BOEC MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Breckenridge Outdoor Education
Center is to expand the potential of people with
disabilities and special needs through meaningful,
educational and inspiring outdoor experiences.
Greetings and welcome to Breckenridge Outdoor
Education Center! Much has happened since our last
Empowering News, and yet another very successful year.
The Adaptive Ski Program again set new records for
lesson days, and Keystone Adaptive Center continued to
grow. The Wilderness Program exceeded attendance
expectations, expanded adaptive cycling and river rafting
offerings, and maintained partnerships with many
Bruce Fitch
returning agencies and groups. Financially, we finished
the 2014-15 fiscal year in solid condition, placing us on firm ground for years to
come.
Here are some numbers and highlights for the year. Last year we served 2,546
participants for a total of 10,633 participant days in our Adaptive Ski,
Wilderness and Intern Programs, an increase of 15% over the prior year and a
record number of program days delivered. Our disabled warrior activities grew
substantially due to a significant grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs
that expanded our ability to assist service members and their families in healing
from the trauma of their injury. Overall, BOEC experiences continued to attract,
inspire and improve the quality of life for people of all abilities.
The Adaptive Ski and Ride School at Breckenridge and Keystone Resorts
conducted a record 3,332 ski/snowboard lessons for 1,119 individuals. This was
a 1% increase over the 2014 winter season, which was itself a record number.
The Ski Program has seen sustained growth over the past five years, over 8%,
and is currently operating at capacity. Highlights included:
• We delivered eight programs involving 112 U.S. and British military
veterans;
• We continued to work with Summit County Schools special needs classes
and at-risk local youth with Mountain Mentors; and
• A total of $75,362 in ski scholarships was extended to Ski Program
participants who needed extra help to cover our subsidized fees.
The Wilderness Program served 1,401 participants on over 4,331 program days,
a 20% increase over 2014. Here are some highlights of our summer Wilderness
Program:
• We again welcomed six multi-day programs with the Brain Injury Alliance
of Colorado;
• We delivered five multi-day summer programs for 51 disabled military
warriors and family members (including two multi-day river trips on the
iconic Gates of Lodore stretch of the Green River, a first for us on this
section);
• The Children’s Hospital in Denver brought youth from their traumatic brain
injury, Sensory Integrative Disorder, hemophilia and cerebral palsy
programs;
• Young adults from the National Hemophilia Foundation trained to mentor
middle school youth on a subsequent BOEC trip in July;
• Our programs for young survivors of abuse and neglect continued, thanks
to generous individual and government donations; and
2
• A total of $97,660 in scholarship
assistance was extended to Wilderness
Program participants.
BOEC was also fortunate to attract 26
talented Interns, one group of 14 in winter
and another 12 in summer. The Interns not
only brought valuable skills and insights
into our courses, they brought an infectious
energy and optimism to all who worked
with them. Many of these Interns will
move into professional staff roles next year
at the BOEC, and others will assume roles
at adaptive organizations around the
country and around the world, as they have
in the past.
We could not do what we do without the
enormous amount of time and energy given
by the 300+ volunteers who donated nearly
20,000 hours in support of BOEC. Most
volunteers worked as assistant ski
instructors, providing much needed support
to our students, many of whom need two to
three staff in order to ski or ride. Others
helped with wilderness summer
programming, primarily in rafting and
adaptive cycling, and others helped on
special events. Many thanks to this devoted
crew.
On the Board of Directors, we welcomed
two new members this past year, Mike
Dudick and Terence Rix, and three
members left the board, Raule Nemer,
Hilary McDonald and Craig Simson. Many
thanks to these folks for their leadership
and guidance in this stellar year!
We look forward to 2015-16 (our 40th
Anniversary year!), and hope to continue
our success. Many thanks to all of you in
the BOEC community, the staff, interns,
volunteers, board members, donors and
supporters who are the rock of our success
in serving those with disabilities and
special needs. Above all, many thanks to
our students who chose the path of
adventure and joined us for a program
experience. We hope to see you again!
Best,
40th Anniversary Intern and Staff Reunion
To celebrate our 40th year, BOEC is
hosting our first ever intern/staff reunion,
September 16 – 18, 2016. The Internship
Program has existed since the BOEC was
formed, bringing young people from all
over the world to train and expand their
skills in working in the outdoors with
people with special needs. These
energetic, passionate and risk-taking souls
have been the life spring of the BOEC.
Their infectious energy, devotion and hard
work have been the single most important
element in the BOEC’s success. Many of
these interns stayed on to become
professional staff for the BOEC, and
others have gone on to take leadership
positions in adaptive organizations all
over the world. They have become our
best emissaries!
Though our records are spotty, over the
years there has been 400+ interns/staff in
the summer and winter seasons. We are
starting with a Facebook campaign to
regain contact information with interns
from all years, particularly with many
from the early years. If you are a former
intern and can update your email address
with us, as well as interns you have stayed
in touch with, contact the Internship
Director at [email protected].
Families are welcome. Limited lodging at
the Griffith Lodge will be available firstcome, first served.
Here is the tentative schedule for the
reunion:
Friday, Sept 16:
3 PM—check in at Griffith, tour F&D
5 PM—BBQ reception at Griffith Lodge;

Contact [email protected] to sign up.
We hope to see you there!
40th Anniversary Celebration
To celebrate 40 years of BOEC, we will be hosting a celebration
party on Saturday, September 17, from 4 to 9 PM at Carter Park in
Breckenridge. Food, beverage, games and entertainment will be

adaptive skiing, helping to host “Regional
Handicap Ski Competitions” in 1983,
1984 and 1987. In March 1985, BOEC
helped host the “National Handicap Ski
Championship”, at which the country’s
first mono-ski prototype, now the
standard, was introduced.
The Wilderness Program also was
expanded with the construction of a low
ropes course and a wheelchair accessible
nature trail in 1981, and a three element
high ropes course, river program and rock
climbing program in 1982. A major boon
to wilderness programming came with the
construction of the Scott Griffith Lodge
in 1994, a beautiful lodge on the banks of
the F&D pond that to this day serves at
the residential base camp for most of
BOEC’s courses.
From these beginnings, BOEC has grown
and prospered to the present day. BOEC
is now one of the largest and most
successful adaptive outdoor programs in
the country. After 40 years, BOEC is
strong and has been true to its mission–
expanding capabilities through challenge
and adventure, both for its participants
and as an organization.
BOEC Launches “Securing the Future” Capital Campaign
…Continued from page 1
Breckenridge’s former Sanitation
Building, our current headquarters, and
renovating it to meet critical functions and
needs of BOEC, including:
• Seasonal staff housing—with the
addition of a new third floor, the creation
of seasonal field staff housing will
enable BOEC to better attract and retain
high quality staff, the most important
element in our future success. The cost
of affordable housing is a major
challenge to attracting and retaining
staff;
• Logistical support and warehousing-improvement and expansion of our
warehouse facility will position us to
deliver the highest quality outdoor
experiences possible now and well into
the future;
• Office space for administrative support-the renovation will include modern,
functional and accessible workspace for
administrative and program staff and
visitors;
means to attend our programs. Expanding
our Scholarship Endowment will enable
BOEC to provide greater financial
assistance to many deserving individuals
with disabilities or special needs.
• Office space for other non-profit,
outdoor oriented organizations—the
inclusion of office space to house 2–3
other non-profit organizations, building
collaboration and synergy between
organizations.
The Securing Our Future campaign will
raise a total of $1,850,000 that will enable
BOEC to provide the very best in adaptive
outdoor education. BOEC must strive to
keep pace in our facilities and
infrastructure, our staffing and our
outreach in order to deliver the highest
quality experiences we can for our
students. Ultimately, those who will
benefit are our participants with special
needs who gain so much from our
programs.
SECOND, our Wilderness Campus and
the Scott Griffith Lodge are
central to BOEC
programming, with over 65
percent of our students
utilizing this site for
programs in both the
summer and the winter.
Creating state-of-the-art
accommodations, activities,
transportation and natural
areas is essential to
providing the life changing
experiences we intend for
our students.
THIRD, BOEC seeks to
acquire additional
wilderness activities and venues for our
students, allowing us to both expand
programming and enhance current
summer offerings.
FINALLY, BOEC takes pride in reaching

The good news is that we have been
active in securing initial support from
several foundations, individuals and
businesses who are long-time supporters,
and now stand at 64% of the way toward
meeting our goals. See a full list of donors
to date on the Contributions pages. We
will now reach out to all members of the
BOEC community and all who are
interested in helping us reach our goals.
We will be sending out a request for
support in the coming weeks, and hosting
a major donor reception on April 14.

Disabled Warriors Program Helps Vets Enjoy Life
by Lisa Gamber
“It is a simple fact that a recreational
program designed around the patient’s
needs and interests reduces the need for
medication and shortens the hospital stay.
Recreation addresses medical and human
needs. It means much more than having a
set of activity skills for spare time use. It
encompasses values and attitudes.” (The
Success of Recreation Therapy for
Veterans, Hans Peterson, February 9, 2016,

Thanks to many other individual donors
who gave to our Disabled Warriors
Program.
BOEC’s Disabled Warrior
Program became an even
larger part of our repertoire in
2014-15. 163 veterans
participated in eighteen
BOEC programs, with
programming days for vets
increasing 100% over the
previous year. Spouses and
children participated in some
programs, giving families a
chance to heal together and
become close again after
surviving extremely
traumatic circumstances.
These experiences were
made possible by a number of major
donors listed below, who generously gave
monies restricted specifically to military
programs:
Breckenridge Grand Vacations
Breckenridge Ski Resort
Briar Rose Chophouse and Saloon
Doug and Peggy Brown
Christopher McShea Family
Columbine Hills Concrete
Department of Veterans Affairs,
Veterans Sports Program
DiCola Family Foundation
Drabant Family Foundation
Houston and Charlotte Kauffman
Keystone Ranch Golf Course
Keystone Ski Resort
Roger and Jill Kurtz
Marmot Mountain LLC
Scotty McFadden Foundation
Dwight and Diane Mikulis
Open enrollment programs provided
opportunities for veterans to participate in a
variety of outdoor adventures. BOEC was
overwhelmed by applications for these
programs. In a partnership with the Bureau
of Land Management, BOEC led two selfsupported trips down the famed Gates of
Lodore section of the Green River. A much
sought-after stretch of river due to its
challenging, but not terrifying, rapids and
spectacular scenery, this was an amazing
opportunity for the veterans who were able
to attend. We are very fortunate to have this
opportunity again in the summer of 2016.
Other programs welcomed agencies and
groups serving the military. The EOD
Warrior Foundation Retreat welcomed
families who had lost loved ones and vets
involved in Explosives Ordnance Disposal.
These brave warriors are trained and
5
equipped to attack and disarm unexploded
ordnance, protecting innocent lives from
high explosive munitions.
Participants overwhelmingly remarked on
the positive benefits of these experiences.
An oft-repeated reason for coming on the
trips was the opportunity to gain resources
from other veterans struggling with the
same issues. The ability to share
experiences with their peers was
invaluable. The majority of
participants suffered from
Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder, in addition to
physical injuries such as
paralysis, visual impairment,
traumatic brain injuries and
amputations.
From a warrior who
participated in Ski and Ride
Camp at Snofest:
“The staff and instructors of
Adaptive Adventures and
Keystone Adaptive Center
were exceptional. The staff
and instructors provided a
safe, comfortable and
friendly environment to try the program. I
felt that if any issues arose they would be
there to help deal with them timely, safely
and without judgment. All of my
instructors were great in listening to my
challenges and issues.
I had not been snowboarding in 9 seasons
and was not sure how the program would
work out. I was challenged and improved
every day. I could not have been happier
or more pleased with the program. I would
recommend this program to anyone
wanting to get on the slopes. I am
extremely grateful for the opportunity to
have participated in this program.”

very year BOEC receives many generous donations
and grants for support of our adaptive programs. In
addition, special events and fundraisers play a huge part
in raising awareness of our mission and raising funds to
support our adaptive programs. Annually, special events
net over $110,000, including those hosted by BOEC and
other events put on by generous donors. Some major
special events in 2015-2016 provided critical support for
our mission and we thank our community leaders and
donors behind these initiatives.

BOEC’s Scott Griffith Lodge
by Ella Greene
I
n 1991 the Griffith Foundation granted
$250,000 to build a log structure to be
known as the Griffith Lodge. Local
Breckenridge resident Richard Griffith
(now deceased) headed this family
foundation, and he personally donated an
additional $100,000 to bring water, gas,
electric and sewer service to the Lodge.
Ultimately over $400,000 was donated to
build the 6,000
square foot
facility that was a
superb addition to
the BOEC. The
lodge was
rededicated as the
Scott Griffith
Lodge in July
2005, in memory
of their son who
died of cancer at
the age of 27. Not
only did the
Lodge greatly
increase housing
capacity and
provide
accommodations
suitable for the
needs of populations with more severe
disabilities, it also provided a much
needed logistics center, staff lounge, and
garage all located on the first floor.
Additionally, the Lodge has proven to be
a solid source of revenue, operating as a
unique rental facility for large groups and
weddings during slow periods of the
Wilderness Program.
If you visited the Griffith Lodge this last
summer you may have thought it was
brand new when you arrived at the
program site. After 25 years of intense
UV Light and extreme winters, the lodge,
which resides at 10,000 feet at the base
of Breckenridge Ski Area was weathered
and in need of a face lift. The Log
Doctors of Silverthorne, CO (supported
by a large in-kind donation from Ernie
Blake and Sharon Magness) assessed the
building and once weather permitted,
they went to work in Spring 2015. The
job consisted of blasting the building
with biodegradable corncob particles to
get the Douglas Fir logs back to their
natural state. Next they grinded the
wood, smoothing out any imperfections
and fixing any problem logs. Stain was
then applied which brightened up the
lodge, and finally they caulked and rechinked the logs making it like new.
Thanks to Rudy and his crew, the Lodge
sits beautifully on the Old Town
Reservoir.
In addition, the Griffith Lodge received
some renovations internally. Tony Harris,
who built the Lodge in ’91, had noticed
some shifting in the logs, which is to be
expected. He made some adjustments to
the jacks as determined by the natural
compression. With the shifting of a log
structure, minor cracking develops in the
walls. In December 2015, Lowe’s Home
Improvement brought a crew of
volunteers and provided the resources to
freshen up the walls with a new coat of
paint. They also donated the services to
10
renovate our upstairs bathroom to make
it more accessible. We now have a walkin shower rather than a clawfoot tub to
step into and you can fit a shower chair
in there for added support. We would like
to thank Tony Harris, the Log Doctors,
and Lowes Home Improvements for their
support in maintaining and improving the
Griffith Lodge. Still on the books for
improvements
around the Lodge
include replacing
the decking, and
possibly
extending the
deck to allow for
more program
area immediately
outside the Lodge.
If this is
something you
may want to get
involved in we
will definitely be
calling for help
when the project
comes into
fruition.
While this article has been primarily on
the structure and upkeep of the Lodge,
the Griffith is known to many more for
what happens inside it. The Lodge would
not be what it is without all of the people
that stay there. There are only a handful
of days this summer where the Lodge
will not be occupied by one of our
Wilderness Programs. Each course
makes it their own. It has been
transformed into a Hollywood Squares
game show, a journey around the World,
an art studio, and there’s even been
pirates walking the plank. A huge thank
you to our staff, interns, and volunteers
who make this place come alive and
create the magic that happens inside the
Griffith Lodge.
