July 10, bmitted by FOR suDEADLINE ADS IS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2015. June 15th-21st IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: A Sun-Mars union in your birthday week endows you with huge amounts of energy and if you channel it constructively you will accomplish more over the coming 12 months than you ever dreamed possible. Avoid arguments though – you may say too much. ARIES (March 21-April 20) Focus on finishing something you have already begun over the next few days, rather than on starting something new. A final push will see you through to the end and bring considerable rewards over the second half of the year. LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23): For quite some time now you have been pursuing an objective that may have done a lot for your ego but has done little to further your reputation or boost your bank balance. It’s time to get serious. There are bills to be paid. TAURUS (April 21 -May 21): With Saturn entering the relationship area of your chart you may find that you don’t get along so well with people you are close to and that will, of course, cause concern. All it means is you still have a few differences to resolve. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22): Saturn, planet of limitation, moves back into your birth sign this week, bringing with it challenges you have confronted before but never quite got to grips with. Think of it as a second chance. This time you WILL get it right. GEMINI (May 22-June 21): There have been so many changes of late that you probably need to catch your breath and the good news is you will get a period of stability to offset the chaos of the past few weeks. Give your mind and body time to heal. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21): It will feel as if a weight has been lifted from your shoulders this coming week and no doubt you will want to celebrate, but be warned: there are still a lot of serious issues that need to be deal with. Don’t turn your back on reality. CANCER (June 22-July 23): Try to be more imaginative over the coming week Try to look at old problems in new ways. That applies to all areas of your life but especially to money matters where the usual way of doing things is unlikely to bring the results you seek. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20): You will need to make a special effort to get along with partners, loved ones and work colleagues over the next few days. The nicer you are to others now the more freedom you will have later to come and go as you please. LEO (July 24-Aug. 23): You may think your ideas are brilliant, and maybe some of them are, but the planets warn you may also be deceiving yourself. Don’t be too proud to ask friends and family members if what you are planning makes sense to them. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19): Your workload is likely to increase during the early part of the week but there is no need for concern. You will be able to deal with it and you will still have time left over to do the things that make you happy. VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23): Don’t make too many plans for the next few days because Saturn, planet of limitation, will restrict your ability to move around and do as you please. Duties and obligations you hoped others had forgotten about will soon be center stage again. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20): There will be times over the week ahead when certain people seem to be deliberately ignoring you – but even if it is true, what of it? You don’t need their attention, still less their praise. In fact they will be the ones who end up missing you. Lew and Marilyn Dodd, 320 John Powell Road, www.cedarruncattle.com Sudlersville, MD 21668, Northeast of Church Hill QAC Drug-Free Coalition Activites: “Be the Wall Between Teens and Alcohol” Media Campaign Underage drinking comes down to access, if teens cannot get their hands on it, they cannot use it. We know that some of the primary places teens get alcohol is from their homes (unmonitored liquor cabinets/refrigerators), older siblings/friends and parents, friend’s parents, bought with fake identification, parties, and other adults who purchase alcohol for them. Parents/other adults in the community and licensed liquor establishments are critical people in keeping teens from drinking alcohol. You hear that a neighbor is hosting an underage drinking party, SPEAK UP! Tell your children and other parents that no adult should substitute their judgment for a teen’s parents. Underage drinking is not a “Rite of Passage.” Academic problems, car accidents, alcohol intoxication/overdosing, drug use, injuries, assaults, and irreversible brain damage are not “Rites of Passage.” We applaud parents who discourage and disallow underage drinking! We know “most parents” would never allow underage drinking in their home. Besides, it is illegal to allow underage youth to drink in your home; there are potential civil and criminal liabilities. As parents you have considerable influence over your teens decision to drink to not to drink alcohol. Eighty-three percent of youth report parents are the leading influence in their decision to not to drink alcohol. (Source: The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, February 2012). Be Clear: Discuss underage drinking and the consequences before your child starts drinking. This means start talking to them early and often about alcohol use when they are about 9 years old or younger. Be Firm: Know the law and review the laws with your child. Establish clear boundaries and expectations early. Youth that know what their parents expectations are, are more likely to obey the family rules. Be Consistent: Once you have established the boundaries and the consequences with your child if they choose to drink alcohol make sure to enforce the rules and consequences swiftly and consistently. “Be The Wall Between Teens and Alcohol, Be Clear, Be Firm, Be Consistent” Paid for by: MD Behavioral Health Administration Alcohol/Drug Prevention Grant, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration. FOR MORE INFO CALL 1-800-950-1MVA “Bloomsday” Promises Literary Fun, Food and Music on June 16th James Joyce fans and curious novices up for a literary adventure can join the global celebration of the Irish author’s modernist masterpiece Ulysses when Chestertown’s first Bloomsday celebration unfolds on Tuesday, June 16th. Starting with an Irish-themed breakfast, the daylong event includes a talk by a Joyce expert, local talents reading excerpts from the book, Irish music, and a Fish ’n Chips dinner. Culminating the day will be a dramatic performance of the book’s final chapter, Molly Bloom’s famous stream of conscious soliloquy, performed by Washington College theater professor Michele Volansky from a bed on High Street. With the exception of the food offerings, all events are free. The new event is the brainchild of Chestertown residents Kelly Castro and Joseph Flanagan. Castro says their inspiration first struck five years ago when she and Flanagan were both working their way through Ulysses. The two discussed organizing a Bloomsday event, but put the idea on the back burner because of full schedules. Community members with theatrical or literary expertise readily signed up to read or perform excerpts from the novel throughout the day. They include Jim Dissette, Jim Landskroener, Bob Ortiz, Judy Kohl, Andy Goddard, Skip and Catherine Bushby, and Jay Alexander. Washington College faculty and staff include V.P. for Finance Mark Hampton, Starr Center director Adam Goodheart, and English professors James Hall and Elizabeth O’Connor. Written in 1922 and first published serially in a literary magazine, Ulysses was subject to censorship and harsh criticism before achieving its cult-like status in the literary world. The novel is considered the defining work of modernist literature with its mix of literary styles and devices, stream of consciousness dialogue and overall inventiveness. Bloomsday celebrations are based on the fact that the novel takes place on one day, June 16, 1904, in Dublin, Ireland, as it follows the lives of main character Leopold Bloom and numerous residents. There will be an Irish Breakfast and Chapter One reading from 9am to 10:30am at The Kitchen at the Imperial Hotel, 208 High Street. Tickets are $20 per person, plus a cash Bloody Mary bar. For reservations call 410-778-5000. From 10:45am to 11:15am a free Ulysses lecture at the Garfield Center for the Arts, 210 High Street. From 11:15am to noon are free readings from “Calypso” at the Garfield Center for the Arts. From noon to 12:30pm are free readings from “Wandering Rocks.” From 12:30pm to 2pm at JR’s Pub, 337 High Street, is Irish music with free readings from “The Sirens.” “Wandering Rocks” free readings at The Bookplate, 112 South Cross Street, from 2:15pm to 2:45pm followed by free readings from 3pm to 4pm. From 5:30pm to 6:45pm on Lawyer’s Row, off High Street, a Fish ‘n Chips dinner with music and casual readings. From 7pm to 8pm, outside the former Imperial Hotel at 208 High Street, will be a free performance of “Penelope.” Bloomsday in Chestertown is made possible with support of the Kent County Arts Council and the Garfield Center for the Performing Arts. Flag Facts The United States Flag, adopted on June 14, 1777, is the fourth oldest national flag in the world. Denmark’s flag, adopted in 1219, is the oldest. •A flag expert is called a “vexillologist.” •The blue field on the U.S. Flag is called the “union.” •On Memorial Day (the last Monday in May), to honor all who died in battle, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day. •Since 1834, the U.S. Flag has flown continuously next to the grave of the Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, near Paris, France. •June 14 was proclaimed Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of communities for many years after Wilson’s proclamation, it didn’t receive its official Congressional designation until 1949. The United States Flag should always be treated with the utmost care and respect. Remember, the flag represents a living country, and as such, is considered a living thing. •Always display the flag with the blue union field up – never display the flag upside down, except as a distress signal. •Always hold the flag carefully – never let it touch anything beneath it: the ground, the floor, water or merchandise. •Always keep the flag aloft and free – never carry it flat or horizontally. •Always keep the flag clean and safe – never let it become torn, soiled or damaged. •Always dispose of a flag properly, preferably by burning it. •Always treat the flag with respect. Never use it for advertising purposes. Never embroider it on household items or pieces of clothing. Never use it as part of a costume or athletic uniform. However, it is proper to attach a flag patch to the uniform of military personnel, fire fighters, police officers and members of other patriotic organizations – provided the patch is properly affixed. Washington College Students Seek Kent County Stories from World War II Do you have a family member, friend, or neighbor who lived in or around Chestertown in the 1940s and who likes to tell stories about the old days? Did you grow a Victory Garden? Attend Washington College on the GI Bill? Did you contribute to the “School-At-War Program” at Garnett School? Or work at the Kent Defense Corporation? If so, Washington College students want to hear about it. A team of students from the College’s C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience is setting out this summer to record a series of oral history interviews with people who lived in Chestertown and its surrounding area of Kent and Queen Anne’s Counties during World War II. The student researchers seek to chronicle the local wartime experience through the stories of those who experienced it. Potential interviewees might be veterans, family members of veterans, or simply people who lived in this area and remember things like blackouts, bond drives, munitions factories, and the presence of German POWs at local farms. Students welcome memories of how the wartime experience involved men, women, and children from all backgrounds and walks of life, whether in uniform or as civilians. The Dr. Davy H. McCall World War II History Project will collect and archive personal stories and recollections to show how Chestertown, a small American town, participated in the war effort. Students will also be making digital scans of wartime letters, photos, and other artifacts to be permanently archived at Washington College. This year’s StoryQuest program is named for Dr. McCall, chair emeritus of the Department of Economics at Washington College. Dr. McCall is a World War II veteran, a pioneer in documenting Eastern Shore history, and a friend and supporter of the StoryQuest program. This summer marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, and with each passing year, more stories and memories of that era are lost forever. Washington College students hope to save a few of them, a task with particular resonance in this anniversary year. If you or someone you know would like to be interviewed, contact Michael Buckley at 410-810-7156 or [email protected]. Visit the C. V. Starr Center’s website www.starrcenter.washcoll.edu. Centreville Lions Club 34th Annual Bay Music Festival on June 13th The Bay Music Festival, begun by the Centreville Lions Club 34 years ago, will feature six bands on the main stage and six artists on the second stage, all for the unbelievable gate price of $10 per person. The festival will be held at the Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park near Centreville on Saturday June 13th from 3pm until 10pm, with gates opening at 2pm. The main stage will feature a mix of the regions hottest new bands with some of the regions all-time favorites playing the songs you love with their best originals. The second stage will feature one of the areas’ top children’s musicians with two shows slated just for them, as well as featuring some of the areas outstanding new talent being presented by the Torch School of Music in Centreville and the Priddy Music Academy in Millersville. The Lion club’s major fundraiser for the year has become one of the longest continuous playing music festivals in the state and the gate price has been rolled back so everyone can come out with family and friends to celebrate the return of summer by supporting these fantastic musicians, and the community. There will be no advance ticket sales this year, just $10 at the gate for all over age 10 with plenty of food and ice cold beverages for sale at the park. Kicking off the festivities at 3pm on the main stage will be the School of Rock House Band from Annapolis. Safety 3rd, presented by the Priddy School of Music, will take the stage at 4pm; this band of 12 to 15 year old phenoms placed second out of a 20 band battle of the bands last year and are ready to rock. The Dell Foxx Company is a good ole fashion rock-n-roll band covering the classics. Chris Sacks is welcomed back to the stage with his entire band at 6:20pm when they will fill the park with selections of their original tropical breezy island music tunes. The crowd will then cheer one of the Shore legends, the icon of truckin’ rockabilly music to the stage, Mr. Birddog Wheeler and his Road Kings, who have played every year at this festival. They will perform at 7:40pm. Then, to close out the show the very popular band Flashback is reuniting. They take the stage at 9pm to play all your favorite rock n roll songs to dance the night away. Back by popular demand and making her third appearance at the Bay Music Festival will be Tracey Eldridge, who is one of the most popular children’s performers in the Maryland/DC area, with shows scheduled for 3:40pm and 4:40pm that promises to entertain Moms and Dads as well as the children. Lou Torchio and the Torch School of Music will present a show at 5:50pm. The Priddy Music Academy will present two more of their all-stars when Caroline Curry takes the second stage at 7:15pm and Jill Rohde at 8:40pm. We’re proud to stand behind the Maryland Watermen’s Association in their efforts to protect the heritage and future of our commercial watermen.” This year, Phillips will continue to support the Maryland Watermen’s Association through the sale of their Blue Crab Margarita and 100th Anniversary Cookbook, working toward a fundraising goal of $10,000. Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola and Steve Abshire pay tribute to The Great Guitars (Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel) with a program of swinging jazz classics including music by Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fats Waller, Charlie Christian; some blues, some bossa nova and beyond. Pizzarelli, Vignola and Abshire will be joined by Chuck Redd on drums, Tommy Cecil on bass and special guest Vinny Raniolo on guitar. This concert is part of The Mainstay’s year-long “The Byrd Series: Celebrating Charlie’s 90th” and will capture the essence and excitement of the original Great Guitars who joined forces in 1973 and issued the first of four exceptional jazz recordings in 1974. Like the original concerts, this will be an evening of hard driving swing, sensitive ballads and good-natured, respectful interplay. The legendary Bucky Pizzarelli has had a stellar career and has been a fixture in jazz and the studios since the early ‘50s. The list of big bands and vocalists with whom he has performed and recorded reads like a veritable Who’s Who of Jazz. He is the master of the seven-string guitar, a Benedetto Bucky Pizzarelli Signature Guitar, which provides him with a continuous bass line and gives him the ability to play melody, harmony and bass all at the same time. Frank Vignola’s stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, Mark O Connor, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. His solos are legendary and his sly humor has made him a favorite with audiences around the world. Steve Abshire is no stranger to The Mainstay. He is a regular in Max’s Mainstay All-Stars, The Mainstay house band. Abshire performed with various Navy Bands for 24 years and was the guitarist and a featured soloist with the Commodores, the Navy’s premiere jazz ensemble, for 18 of those years. He is noted for his rock solid rhythm guitar, his impressive solos and his ability to bring the blues to life in a jazz setting. The Byrd Series of concerts at The Mainstay pays tribute to memory and legacy of Charlie Byrd, the world renowned and Annapolis-based jazz guitarist who played mostly the nylon string classical guitar and influenced every style of music that uses the instrument. Admission is $20. For information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information is also available at The Mainstay’s website http://www.mainstayrockhall.org.
