Gloves and a hat (covers ears) will help prevent losing body heat. • Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep feet warm and dry and maintain your footing in ice and snow. • Take breaks when shoveling snow. Seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of hypothermia, including confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. • Watch for symptoms of frostbite, including numbness, flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin discoloration, or waxy feeling skin. • Minimize travel. If it is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. • Don’t forget family pets – bring them indoors. If they can’t come inside, make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water. • Avoid frozen pipes - run water, even at a trickle, to help prevent them from freezing. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children. Keep the garage doors closed if there are water lines in the garage. • Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night to help avoid freezing pipes. • Download the Red Cross First Aid App for quick, expert advice on what to do in case of an emergency. This free app is available on the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores. • Never use a stove or oven to heat the home. • Space heaters should sit on a level, hard surface. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away, (i.e.) paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs. Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room or going to bed. • If using a fireplace, use a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs. • Use generators correctly. Never operate one inside the home, including basement or garage. • Don’t hook a generator up to the home’s wiring. I THOUGHT I WOULD - Write a case history for you today, but I changed my mind. Instead let me tell you about something I see literally every day. Numbness and tingling in the hands…especially at night when in bed. They symptoms will awaken the patient. Often the patient notices it driving. Frequently the patients have had nerve conduction studies and neck MRI. They have been told they have a disc injury, advanced arthritis or other cause. Often they have been evaluated for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Sometimes a surgical procedure has even been recommended, or they have had neck injections. They report varying degrees of relief with these treatments. These patients tell me they can’t feel the pen in their hand when they write, they drop their coffee Trader’s Crossword cup, etc. They almost always do better with chiropractic care. I see it over and over. If this sounds like you or yours, consider chiropractic. Chiropractic is the safest, most effective back and neck care in the world. Insurance companies love chiropractic for a reason! Medicare, worker’s comp., auto and most health insurances pay chiropractic care. Non-insured care is expensive and staying well is positively cheap! Call Schreppler Chiropractic 410-778-4696. Free consultations. We fix backs and necks by hand. It’s what we do. No knives, no needles, no drugs, no fear. Call and discuss your difficulty with the doctor. We will outline cost of treatment on the phone. 29 years of local, friendly, effective care. Pictured (front row): David Kalb, RN; Andrea Spray, RN; Jennifer Nutley, RN, nurse manager; Dawn Hartsock; respiratory therapist; (back row) Stu Seitz, interim site administrator, UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown; Kristina Thompson, PCT; Maryann Ruehrmund, executive director, UM Chester River Health Foundation; Deborah Davis, MD; Wendy Przybl, registrar; and Susie Shepard. Nominated by Maryann Ruehrmund, CFRE, executive director of the UM Chester River Health Foundation, she wrote: “I was recently visiting the Emergency Department when a call came in from a volunteer EMS team, announcing it was seven minutes out with a person in full arrest, not breathing on her own and no heart rate. CPR was ongoing in transit. As a fan of most of the TV series involving hospitals and ERs, I thought, well, I’m going to stay out of the way but watch and see how this kind of emergency is truly dealt with. A well-rehearsed, large cast of characters began meaningfully moving into place, gathering supplies, some in the room some outside. It was obvious that everyone knew exactly what to do, where to be and what they needed. What I observed was so calm, organized and purposeful - nothing like a TV drama with loud voices and unnecessary fast, confusing movements. Thinking about it after, what I observed truly was a 15-minute symphony of highly trained medical professionals at their best! The staff working that morning epitomize what I believe are Everyday Heroes. I was humbled by them. I know no better way to say “thank you for what you do,” - and to tell you how much you are appreciated by so many, than to nominate this team for this recognition.” The Everyday Hero program provides patients, visitors and staff members with the opportunity to recognize and thank any member or team at UM Shore Regional Health, who made a positive difference in a visit or stay, by making a financial contribution of any size to the UM Chester River Health Foundation. Funds received are used for equipment, capital improvements and staff education in the departments in which the employees or team work. For more information about the Everyday Hero program, call the Foundation at 410-810-5661. Thanks from Adventist Food Pantry The Adventist Food Pantry, located at 305 North Kent Street in Chestertown, would like to thank the community for its continued support. Since July of 2014, over 1,840 families have been served and 37,580 lbs. of food distributed to those who could use a little extra food and to those that are striving to feed their families. The Pantry partners with the Maryland Food Bank which allows for food items to be purchased in bulk at a reduced price. The Pantry would like to thank those who are taking their time to collect food items, warm coats, and hats and gloves for distribution to the community. In addition, local churches are having food drives for the food pantry. The Pantry cannot begin to thank you for your continued support. The Seventh-day Adventist Food Pantry started in July of 2014, serving two or three families a week. It has now grown to 50 to 72 families each week. The food pantry is open to the public as well as for donations on Tuesdays from 10am until 12noon. For donations when the pantry is closed simply follow the signs to the basement steps and you will find a drop-off container for food items. The Pantry’s challenge has grown → Crossroads Community Receives Support for Mental Health Initiatives Queen Anne’s County residents accessing Crossroads Community’s network of mental health recovery resources will benefit from grants awarded by the Queen Anne’s County Mental Health Committee (QACMHC). Two 2015 grants will fund several initiatives supporting clinic and residential services offered by Crossroads Community and its clinic, Corsica River Mental Health Services. Crossroads Community received two grants to fund several initiatives. “Serving the uninsured and underinsured is a challenge to any organization whose mission is to provide service regardless of the ability to pay,” according to Crossroads Community Executive Director John Plaskon. Corsica River Mental Health Services clinics offer a sliding-fee scale to the uninsured, based on income and family size. One QACMHC grant will assist up to six individuals with various therapeutic needs. The same grant will benefit children in the clinic’s schoolbased program. Funding mobile computing systems for clinicians who work with children in the schools and off site in summer programs will promote efficiency and accuracy through real-time documentation of services. A second grant awarded to Crossroads Community by QACMHC will benefit the organization’s Adopt-A-House in Queen Anne’s County initiative. About thirty Queen Anne’s County residents live in facilities and apartments with various levels of independence through the help of from “where are the families” and “how can we help them” to “where can we find the necessary funds to continue to purchase food from the Maryland Food Bank each week”. Please continue to donate food items and warm clothing and mail your cash donations. Please make checks payable to The Adventist Food Pantry and mail to Attention: Crossroads Community. Plaskon noted that a significant component in the mental health recovery process is the living environment, where pride in one’s residence, however transitional for the client, is important to self-esteem. Over the years, funding for the residences has been targeted primarily to renovations, maintenance and safety issues. The quality of the furnishings was a lesser priority, which could unintentionally make residents feel unworthy of anything better. Last year, with support from QACMHC,CrossroadsCommunity began the Adopt-A-House program, with a plan to provide all its houses in Queen Anne’s County with new furnishings over a five-year period. This latest grant continues QACMHC’s support for the program and will completely furnish one of the residences. Plaskon expressed his appreciation to Queen Anne’s County Mental Health Committee for its continued support for Crossroads Community and its clients. “Recovery from mental illness is a journey,” he said. “We can offer help along that journey, but cannot do it alone. Queen Anne’s County Mental Health Committee, and our other donors and funders, are critical to our being able to provide the support our clients need to become independent, productive members of the community. We are grateful for that support.” Crossroads Community offers access to mental health recovery resources to residents of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties. Its Corsica River Mental Health Services clinics are located in Centreville, Cambridge and St. Michaels. For more information, to make a donation or to volunteer, contact Crossroads Community at 410758-3050 or visit its website, www.ccinconline.com. J. Johnson, 305 North Kent Street, Chestertown, MD 21620. Anything that you can do to aid the pantry in continuing to help community families is and will continue to be appreciated. The Seventh-day Adventist Food Pantry looks forward to working with and for the community. QAC High School Student Participating in Student of the Year Campaign for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Tabitha Lansinger is a student at Queen Anne’s County High School who has been nominated for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s inaugural Student of the Year campaign. Twelve students from the state of Maryland are working on the drive and Tabitha is the only candidate from the Eastern Shore. The six-week campaign started January 12th and ends February 27th. Tabitha’s goal is to raise $20,000 for blood cancer research. Participating in this event is a continuation of Tabitha’s passion about this disease. She recently received her Girl Scout Gold Award for raising awareness of childhood cancer during the month of September. She held a large event at the local 4-H park in August to kick-start efforts in September when local businesses and stores decorated their establishments with gold for the entire month. Due to Tabitha’s success in this experience she was nominated twice for the Student of the Year campaign. Upcoming fundraisers will be held at Sweet Frog on Kent Island on Tuesday, February 3rd from 4pm to 7pm, Centreville Dominos on Wednesday, February 11th from 10:30am to midnight, Chestertown Dominos on Friday, February 13th (time to be announced) and a concert at Chesapeake College on Saturday, February 14th with Tim Neufeld and The Glory Boys performing a music mix of modern worship, bluegrass and gospel. The goal of Tabitha’s Team BEE Strong is to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s research of all blood diseases including blood related cancers, which affect children most. For completed details and more information about the campaign, please visit Tabitha’s website www.lls.org/pages/md/soymaryland/tlansinger. Traveled Lane Trailers, Inc. Sixth grade student, Ty Wilson was runner up. The school level Geographic Bee, at which students answered oral questions on several facets of geography, was the first round in the 27th annual National Geographic Bee. Students in grades four through eight participated in the competition. Preliminary rounds were completed in individual grades earlier this month. Finalists were: Harrison Sheridan and Kolby Brice (fourth grade), Flynn Bowman and Sage Cookerly (fifth Kent School Geography Bee students grade), Campbell Parkhurst and Ty Wilson (sixth grade), Peyton Taylor and Giovanni Procaccini (seventh grade), and Zachary Goss and Will Cammerzell (eighth grade.) Kent School’s seventh grade geography teacher, Michele Cerino, has been coordinating the Bee for 10 years and is proud of all the contestants, students and teachers that help in preparing for this event. On Monday, January 12th a written test was given to the winner, then sent to the National Geographic Society, who then determines winners qualified for the state level competition. For the past two years, a Kent School student has successfully qualified to compete in the state level of the National Geographic Bee. According to the National Geographic Bee web page, “Each year thousands of schools in the U.S. participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in the classrooms and spark student interest in the subject and increase public awareness about geography. The Geographic Bee website features a quiz section, an app and information on the World Competition.” Kent School is an independent school in Chestertown, Maryland, serving boys and girls from pre-K through grade eight. Its mission is to guide students in realizing their potential for academic, artistic, athletic and moral excellence. If you feel the need to commit yourself to a cause, make sure it’s a positive one. ARIES (March 21-April 20) Someone, somewhere needs your help and once you are aware of that fact you will drop what you are doing and come running to their rescue. No one is as eager to do a good deed as an Aries and you’ll do several this week. LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23): You can ask almost anything of almost anyone this coming week and chances are you will get it. Cosmic activity in your fellow Air sign of Aquarius makes you even more persuasive than usual – don’t let that talent go to waste. TAURUS (April 21 -May 21): You will get the chance to make friends with someone in a position of power this week. But don’t think you have to flatter them and agree with every word they say. What they like most about you is that you speak your mind. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22): There will be some strong emotions in the air over the next few days and if you are not very careful you could get swept away by it all. Both in your private life and on the work front you must keep a grip on reality. GEMINI (May 22-June 21): The coming week will be extremely lucky for you. So many things will go right that it’s like you have a special angel watching over you. Maybe you have, maybe the good fortune fairy is on your side. Make the most of it. CANCER (June 22-July 23): There is a chance you will come into money over the next few days, maybe through sheer good fortune or maybe because an investment has paid off at last. Whatever the reason don’t let anyone tell you that you do not deserve it – you do. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21): You will say some outrageous things over the next few days but there is every chance that you will get away with it. People expect you to be controversial and outspoken, so go right ahead and stir things up a little – or a lot! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20): Don’t try to show your feelings for someone by splashing a load of cash on them. Not only is it not what they expect of you but you could put yourself in serious financial difficulties. They already know you love them. LEO (July 24-Aug. 23): You may not find it easy to tell certain people how much they mean to you but you must make the effort over the next seven days. Leave loved ones and relatives in no doubt how you feel. They think you’re the bee’s knees too! AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19): No effort will be too much for you over the next few days. Whatever goal you have in your sights now will be reached by the end of the week. If anyone is foolish enough to stand in your way they won’t be standing for long! VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23): Be careful what you allow yourself to think this week because your imagination is extremely powerful at the moment. The things you think now will in some way or other come true later on, so be happy and positive at all times. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20): You will know instinctively this week if what you are being told is the truth or a lie. Your sixth sense is so sharp that you pick up the tiniest changes in tone and body language. No lie detector machine is as sensitive as you! Brenna Schneider Returns for Talk at Washington College on February 9th As part of the Goldstein Program’s Young Alumni Speaker Series at Washington College, 2006 graduate Brenna Schneider will return to campus to share her experiences as the founder of an American manufacturing company. Her talk, “Made Here: Promoting Job Creation and Fighting Inequality,” will take place Monday, February 9th at 5pm in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall. It is free and open to the public. Schneider is CEO of 99Degrees Custom, a made-to-order clothing manufacturer based in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The young CEO is a strong advocate for “Made in the USA” Brenna Schneider manufacturing and for providing employees with a living wage and benefits. An important goal of 99Custom is to train workers well and give them the skills they will need to move on to higher paying positions in the clothing industry. Through her success, Schneider is helping revive the textile manufacturing industry in Lawrence, a town that played a prominent role in America’s Industrial Revolution. “We aim to demonstrate that business has an important role in tackling poverty in America for this and future generations,” the company website states. While a student at Washington College, Schneider served as the president of the Model UN. In that role, she accompanied political science professor Christine Wade to Cuba to visit and work with women’s organizations. After graduating, she spent a year working in Bhuj, India as the recipient of a William J. Clinton Fellowship for Service from the American India Foundation. (The Foundation pairs promising young professionals with leading social enterprises and NGOs to design and work on projects that can be sustained and duplicated.) Before founding 99Degrees Custom, Schneider was Vice President of Operations for American MoJo, an apparel manufacturer dedicated to creating more jobs for women, particularly single mothers. She had begun working at Mojo as a consultant while earning her MBA in Social Impact Management from the Heller School at Brandeis University. She joined the company full-time after graduation, working on inventory management and customized products. American Mojo closed in late 2012, leaving Schneider with “a lot of questions about the market for U.S. apparel manufacturing and its ability (or inability) to generate the kinds of jobs that we need in post-industrial cities.” After months of research she founded 99DegreesCustom to provide quick turnaround on customized outerwear. The company won the Diamond Award ($100,000) at the 2013 MassChallenge Competition, and Boston Magazine called it one of the top 50 ideas “shaping the way we live, work, learn and play.” Prior to her public talk on February 9th, Schneider will meet with Political Science and International Studies majors for a “Tea and Talk.” Her visit and talk are sponsored by the College’s Goldstein Program in Public Affairs with support from the C.V. Starr Center. Renowned Translator of Persian Epics Opens Lit House Series at WC One of the world’s foremost experts on medieval Persian literature kicks off the Rose O’Neill Literary House spring lecture series, “What’s Found in Translation,” on Tuesday, February 3rd. Poet and translator Richard Davis will discuss his work beginning at 4:30pm at the Lit House, 407 Washington Avenue. His talk is free and open to the public. Davis, whom the Times Literary Supplement called “our finest translator from Persian,” taught Persian at University of California, and at Ohio State University, Richard Davis where he also served as chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures for almost a decade. Mage Publishers, who has published eight of Davis’s books, including his own creative works such as At Home and Far From Home: Poems on Iran and Persian Culture (Mage, 2009), credits Davis with “exacting technical expertise and wide cultural sympathy - an ability to enter into distant cultural milieus both intellectually and emotionally.” Davis has also received multiple awards for his translation work, including being one of the Washington Post’s “top ten books of 2006” for his translation of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh: the Persian Book of Kings. Davis has also received awards and distinctions such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Ingram Merrill and Heinemann awards for poetry. “Dick Davis is both an accomplished poet in his own right and a highly regarded translator as well,” says Jehanne Dubrow, director of the Rose O’Neill Literary House. “His translations of epic Persian poetry are particularly impressive incredibly ambitious undertakings, formally rigorous, and displaying a deep understanding of Persian culture and history.” In addition to Davis, the Spring 2015 lecture series “What’s Found in Translation” will feature verse translator and classicist Diane Arnson Svarlien (February 24th), and Benjamin Paloff, author of the poetry book The Politics (March 17th) and a translator of Slavic works. Dubrow says the series on translations is part of the Lit House’s interdisciplinary mission. It allows us to build connections with departments such as Modern Languages and to showcase the role that international literature plays in American arts and letters,” she says. “The visiting translators work in languages that include Persian, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Ancient Greek. Our students will be exposed to not only a range of approaches to translation but also the different career paths that translators can take.” For more information about the “What’s Found in Translation” lecture series and other Rose O’Neill Literary House events and programs, visit www.washcoll.edu/ centers/lithouse, call 410-778-7899, or email [email protected].
