TFW: Ready for some snowflakes? Happy Anniversary: Connie and Doodle Gsell Dear Dr. Truth: My aunt lost a ton of weight and has looked great for a very long time. She was at our house for Christmas and I was shocked. Her neck and tops of her arms were fat. Such a strange place to gain weight. The rest of her was still skinny. My other aunt says that’s what happens when you have liposuction and gain weight. Do you think she will have to have liposuction on her arms and neck now? She looks like a linebacker. I really worry about her health. She should have left well enough alone. Do I tell her not to do it? Wordsby For Review Lanny Parks Community. This was the chief concern my husband and I had when we were shopping for a home in which to raise our family. We ‘interviewed’ towns from New Hampshire/Vermont to northern Virginia looking for our ideal location, and we finally found it here in Chestertown: a small town where children could enjoy freedom to safely roam, a college atmosphere to keep us learning, a viable downtown shopping district for one-stop shopping, a sense of history without smothering us in the past, a county seat for incomeproducing labor, and a hospital for anticipated needs. It was all right here. During the 47 intervening years, a lot of changes have occurred: there has been development on all sides of town, downtown has become a showcase for the arts and realtors that have replaced most of the little stores that had provided daily necessities; but the most serious change has been the recent downsizing of our hospital services and the threat of even more in the near future. Shopping and banking in person have almost become a thing of the past, as people use machines and automatic pay by computer, and where they also do a great deal of their everyday shopping. Downtown brick and mortar stores closed because they did not have enough livein community support to stay open, and long-distance commuters and secondhome buyers did not need them. Not so with the hospital. We ourselves, as former parents of young children, have moved from needing the security afforded us by the hospital to the potential need we might have of the hospital as part of our aging in place here. If we were a young couple just starting a family and shopping for a home today, we would not give Chestertown a second look. With no ob/gyn or pediatrics care available, we would assume that the community had no interest in young families. Now, we are rethinking our future needs based on the example we had recently when my parents relied on a local in-patient facility that met the needs of their declining health. We assumed that our hospital would be there for us, too. Perhaps we have taken too much for granted. Our concerns began when the local hospital agreed to terms with the University of Maryland medical system. Despite promises that services would only be strengthened by this ‘merger’, changes crept into the picture - from the new naming of the facility to cutbacks in available local care. The updated emergency wing was a mixed blessing. Obvious advantages were also worrisome, as more and more patients were transferred to other facilities rather than being admitted here. There are so many issues of concern for our community. Needing medical treatment on a summer weekend can be delayed by impenetrable traffic, winter brings weather-related problems, and high winds or maintenance on the Bay Bridge can impact the speed at which transfers can be made safely. The economics of reducing hospital services here impact everyone: families who need the care for a loved one at a location easily accessible to them, employees whose jobs are at risk or eliminated, and the attractiveness of a community to job growth potential. Our community responded to the invitation to ‘come and hear’ from the leaders of our medical system. We came in large numbers to a location that could not contain us all, but those who were fortunate enough to gain admission heard voices from our own citizens pleading for increased, not reduced, services and fervent reminders of the terms under which this merger was originally made. We listened to them. It remains to be seen whether they listened to us. Tell ’em you saw it in Tidewater Trader! Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner on February 28th The 8th annual Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner benefiting Talbot County food pantries and CarePacks of Talbot County will be held Sunday, February 28th. This successful event continues to raise awareness about the serious hunger issues that exist in our community. Over the past seven years, Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner has raised in excess of Addie’s Empty Bowl collection $80,000 for this worthy cause. Recipients include Asbury Methodist Church, Scott’s United Methodist Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Neighborhood Service Center, Presbyterian Church of Easton, St. Michaels Food Pantry, Tilghman Food Pantry, and Union United Methodist Church. The CarePacks of Talbot County program for children in need is also a beneficiary. Community and corporate support for the event continues to soar with volunteers of all ages lending their time and talent to make the dinner a success. Last year, numerous volunteers generously offered their time, talent, and spirit making Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner a banner success. Hundreds of hand crafted bowls, 48 gallons of soup and chili, dozens of desserts, breads, and flowers were donated and enjoyed at two sold-out venues with record-breaking attendance. For anyone interested in making a bowl for the event, KilnBorn Creations, formerly Clay Bakers, will offer a complete Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner paint package for $14. This offer begins January 1, 2016 and ends February 21, 2016. KilnBorn Creations is located at #1 South Washington Street in Easton. This year there will be two seatings at this often sold out event - the first at 5pm and the second seating will begin at 6:30pm. Tickets go on sale January 4, 2016 and must be purchased in advance by mailing a check for $20 per person to the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, 102 East Dover Street, Easton, MD 21601. Checks should be made payable to Mid-Shore/Empty Bowls. Please indicate which seating you prefer and include a phone number. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.mscf.org. They welcome both individual and corporate sponsors to join in this effort to end hunger in Talbot County one bowl at a time. Donations are graciously accepted either by check on online at www.mscf.org. The Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church Hall, 7215 Ocean Gateway in Easton, located on the westbound lane of Route 50, west of the Maryland State Police barracks. In case of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. Mark your calendars and join the Talbot County Empty Bowls Community Dinner…ending hunger in Talbot County one bowl at a time. Interim Principal Appointed to Sudlersville Elementary School The Board of Education of Queen Anne’s County announces the appointment of Mr. Richard McNeal as interim principal of Sudlersville Elementary School for the remainder of the 2015-16 school year. An interim position will all allow ample time for a search for the most-qualified person to be placed as principal for Sudlersville Elementary School beginning July 1, 2016. The Superintendent believes, an interim position allows us to provide quality leadership with little disruption to the school system during the time the search takes place. Mr. McNeal’s career in Queen Anne’s County Public Schools began in 1980 as a Mathematics Teacher. In addition, Mr. McNeal was the junior varsity soccer coach and varsity tennis coach. In 1991, he was appointed as the Assistant Principal at Queen Anne’s County High School and was named Math Supervisor in 1993. Mr. McNeal was appointed as Principal in 1994 at Centreville Middle School and went on to serve as Principal at Queen Anne’s County High School in 2002. When the position of Math Supervisor became available in 2009, Mr. McNeal was appointed. After his retirement in 2012, Mr. McNeal returned to the Queen Anne’s County Public Schools to work as a mentor with our new teachers. Mr. Richard McNeal received a Bachelor of Science degree from Salisbury State University and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration from Towson State University. Compass Regional Hospice Welcomes Medical Director Katherine Amata Cook, MD, MPH, has joined Compass Regional Hospice as chief medical director. In this role, Dr. Cook is a resource for the hospice team nurses, hospice aides and social workers who care for patients in private residences, nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Queen Anne’s, Kent and Caroline Counties. Dr. Cook also consults with staff, patients and families on care plans developed for residents at the Hospice Center in Centreville and the Caroline Hospice Home in Denton. A resident of Seaford, Delaware, Dr. Cook earned her medical degree and master’s in public health from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. She is board certified in family medicine with added qualifications in hospice and Katherine Amata Cook palliative medicine. Before becoming a physician, she was a physical therapist in New York City. She also completed the Albert Schweitzer Urban Fellowship, a service learning opportunity focused on addressing the health and well-being of under-served communities and mentoring students aspiring to a lifelong path of service. A physician since 2002, Dr. Cook began her medical career with the National Health Service Corps in Alabama, where she served the patients of a busy outpatient clinic and tended to the needs of patients at an acute care hospital, a rural emergency department and a local nursing home. Since moving to the Eastern Shore she has been a family practice physician at Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford and at Choptank Community Health in Federalsburg. In addition to her medical director duties for Compass Regional Hospice, Dr. Cook practices in Denton at UM Community Medical Group - Family Practice. “I’m so thrilled to join Compass Regional Hospice as its medical director,” says Dr. Cook. “They are a great team and share my passion for issues related to death and dying. Together I feel confident that we will alleviate lots of spiritual, emotional and physical suffering.” Dr. Cook replaces Jeffrey Ukens, MD, who has been chief medical director. “I want to thank Dr. Ukens for the many hours he has dedicated to being on the Compass Regional Hospice team,” says Executive Director Heather Guerieri. “His medical expertise has been a valuable asset especially over the last year as we have expanded beyond Queen Anne’s County to take our services into Kent and Caroline Counties.” Guerieri adds, “We welcome Dr. Cook to Compass Regional Hospice. She brings an understanding of family-centered health care that is at the heart of the work with do with patients diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.” John Durocher, MD, continues to serve as associate medical director for Compass Regional Hospice. FLESHLYWONDER: Love you! JON: Love the new rod! SALLY BROMPTON WEEKLY HOROSCOPE Maryland Retired School Personnel Association Scholarships Your Weekly Horoscope By Sally Brompton - Distributed By New York Times Special Features January 25th-31st IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: You will have to deal with some powerful emotions over the coming year and if want to come through unscathed you will have to learn how to deal with your feelings. Above all remember this: it’s not what others do that matters but how you choose to react to it. ARIES (March 21-April 20) There is no point complaining about other people’s behavior this week because it’s unlikely they will listen. A Leo full moon means you won’t get a fair hearing, even if all the evidence is on your side. Save your voice and your energy for another day. LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23): Loved ones and work colleagues will be demanding this week, so you must plan your time carefully and decide in advance what you are, and are not, willing to do. Somewhere along the line you will have to say “no” – or risk getting run into the ground. TAURUS (April 21 -May 21): If someone lets you down this week try not to get angry about it. Also, try to understand that the full moon means that partners and loved will take what you say seriously and criticism, even if warranted, may hurt them in ways you don’t understand. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22): Today’s full moon cuts across the career axis of your solar chart, reminding you to get the balance right between your work and your home life over the next few days. Don’t spend so much time trying to impress the Important People that you neglect the Very Important People – your family. GEMINI (May 22-June 21): Push all your worries to one side this week and go out and enjoy yourself. Others may say you are avoiding your problems, and maybe you are, but this is one of those times when avoiding problems may turn out to be the best way of dealing with them. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21):You won’t take kindly to criticism this week, especially when it seems designed to make you look stupid or feel inferior. If what someone says touches a nerve and you lose your temper the fallout could be spectacular. If you’re going to lose it, lose it big! CANCER (June 22-July 23): This week’s full moon will make you either too generous or too selfish – there is no middle ground. If others approach you for a handout promise them you will think about it and get back to them later. Chances are they will go and leech off someone else. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20): Whatever else you do over the next 24 hours, don’t panic. If you let your fears get the better of you then the decisions you make will be all over the place. In a few days time you will look back and realize there was precious little to genuinely worry about. LEO (July 24-Aug. 23): You are eager to get moving and prove to the world you have what it takes. The only danger is that you will start off too fast and fall on your face, which is not the kind of impression you were hoping to make. Take your time and get it right. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19): A full moon in your opposite sign warns that if someone makes a mistake this week they may try to put the blame on you. Don’t let that happen. Look out for your own interests and make sure the powers that be know who you are and what you can do. VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23): Limit what you do this week to the two or three things that mean the most to you. Better still, focus on one goal only and don’t allow yourself to think about anything else until you have finished what you set out to do. Focus always leads to success. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20): Don’t be afraid to follow your instincts, even if it puts you at odds with everyone else. If you have a good idea this week, and then neglect to follow it up, you will be kicking yourself mentally for weeks, months, maybe even years to come! Gloves and a hat (covers ears) will help prevent losing body heat. • Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep feet warm and dry and maintain your footing in ice and snow. • Take breaks when shoveling snow. Seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of hypothermia, including confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. • Watch for symptoms of frostbite, including numbness, flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin discoloration, or waxy feeling skin. • Minimize travel. If it is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. • Don’t forget family pets – bring them indoors. If they can’t come inside, make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water. • Avoid frozen pipes - run water, even at a trickle, to help prevent them from freezing. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children. Keep the garage doors closed if there are water lines in the garage. • Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night to help avoid freezing pipes. • Download the Red Cross First Aid App for quick, expert advice on what to do in case of an emergency. This free app is available on the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores. • Never use a stove or oven to heat the home. • Space heaters should sit on a level, hard surface. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away, (i.e.) paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs. Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room or going to bed. • If using a fireplace, use a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs. • Use generators correctly. Never operate one inside the home, including basement or garage. • Don’t hook a generator up to the home’s wiring. Twenty-three-year-old Francesca Blanchard has been called “a profound, mature talent” who “displays guile and artistic sensitivity that would be the envy of many tunesmiths twice her age. She may be young, but she has an old soul.” (Seven Francesca Blanchard Days-Burlington VT). Born and raised in France, she traveled the globe with her family before settling in the small Vermont town of Charlotte near the shores of Lake Champlain. Her intimate music, sung in French and English, reflects on her travels, both physical and emotional, and shows influences ranging from Norah Jones and Carla Bruni to Eva Cassidy and Francoise Hardy. Blanchard’s lyrics and melodies reflect her bilingual and multicultural upbringing. Born in the south of France where her family resided until she was ten, she recalls her Mediterranean childhood as one of bare feet on terra cotta tiles, fuchsia sunsets, and mistral breezes. Because her parents worked for international humanitarian agencies worldwide, Blanchard lived and went to school in Ethiopia and Burundi and journeyed with her family to more than 30 off-the-beaten-path countries. She also spent much of her teen years in Vermont before earning a BFA in Theatre Arts from Boston University. In recent years she has begun venturing out on the world stage, opening for Joan Armatrading, Suzanne Vega, The Parkington Sisters, Caravan Palace, and others. In the summer of 2014, Blanchard began work on her debut full-length album, “Deux visions.” After a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign that raised nearly $30,000, Montreal producer Chris Velan (Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars) assembled a lineup of top local musicians at Lane Gibson studios in Charlotte, Vermont to record 12 original songs – six in French, six in English. The all-star contributions to the album continued with the graphic design, which was overseen by the trend-setting Burlington, Vermont design studio Solidarity of Unbridled Labour. The result is a true labor of love, supported by a community of friends, fans and family who are united in the belief that Blanchard’s talent deserves to be discovered by the world. “Deux visions” was released in the US and Canada in October 2015 by the world music label, Cumbancha. This concert is the first booking for The Mainstay’s new Executive Director, Rory Trainor who actually did the work arranging for the concert in the late fall before he officially started work at the Mainstay. His classmate, Henry Shifrin, was runner-up. The schoollevel Geo Bee, at which students answered oral questions on several facets of geography, was the first round in the 28th annual National Geographic Bee. Students in grades four through eight participated in the competition. Preliminary rounds were completed in individual grades earlier this month. Finalists were: Tilghman Overton and Chloe Fowler (4th grade), Frank Cantera and Jake Leaverton (5th grade), Sage Cookerly and Andrew Baughman (6th grade), Tylante Wilson and Henry Shifrin (7th grade), and Amy Brookshire and Annaliesse Cantera (8th grade.) Kent School’s seventh grade geography teacher, Michele Cerino, has been coordinating the Bee for 11 years and is proud of all the contestants, students and teachers that help in preparing for this event. On Monday, January 12th a written test was given to the winner, then sent to the National Geographic Society, who then determines winners who qualify for the state level competition. For the past three years, a Kent School student has successfully qualified to compete in the state level of the National Geographic Bee. According to the National Geographic Bee web page, “Each year thousands of schools in the U.S. participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in the classrooms and spark student interest in the subject and increase public awareness about geography. The Geo Bee website features a quiz section, an app and information on the World Competition.” Kent School is an independent school in Chestertown, Maryland, serving boys and girls from pre-K through grade eight. Compass Regional Hospice Promotes RNs to Leadership Team Two nurses were recently promoted to positions on the Compass Regional Hospice Leadership Team. She was responsible for providing care to patients admitted to the Hospice Center for residential and general inpatient care. In 2015 she became the quality manager and is now the director of clinical services. In her new role Gessford oversees all of the nursing functions related to providing patient care, including patient referral, admissions, and nursing services offered in private residences, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. She also manages the operations of the Centreville H o s p i c e Center and the Caroline Hospice Home in Denton. G e s s f o r d earned her Christie Gessford, RN nursing degree from Anne Arundel Community College. She began her nursing career as an oncology nurse at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. The 2001 film adaptation was nominated for two Emmys. The Church Hill Theatre production, directed by Charles “Pat” Patterson, opened on Friday, January 15th and runs through Sunday, January 31st. In his New York Times review, critic Peter Marks noted a “…glimpse at the perils of breaking up becomes an original examination of the terrors of staying together.” Couples Gabe and Karen and Tom and Beth have been best friends for more than a decade, sharing meals, vacations and children’s birthdays. When one marriage crumbles, the ripple effects threaten everyone. Paul Briggs and Minnie Maloney play Gabe and Karen, professional food writers comfortable in their careers and perhaps a bit too complacent about the strength of their own relationship. Darlene Greer and Christopher Wallace portray the couple in trouble: Beth, an artist in spirit if not on canvas, and Tom, a lawyer who seeks rejuvenation with someone new. A flashback to Gabe and Karen’s beach house, where Tom and Beth met and fell in love, lets the audience ponder why a couple stays together and another cannot. Frequently humorous but edgy, Dinner with Friends contains sexually explicit language and situations inappropriate for children and young teens. The production team consists of a hospice nurse for Kent Home Health and Hospice. In 2001 Willis came to Hospice of Queen Anne’s (now Compass R e g i o n a l Hospice), where Missy Willis, RN she has earned a reputation as an accomplished hospice nurse, who is respected by her colleagues and the patients and families that she serves. As the quality manager, Willis ensures that the operations of Compass Regional Hospice meet the highest standards of state and national regulatory compliance. She also identifies opportunities for process improvement that maintain the agency’s reputation as a leader in the delivery of all Pictured (left to right): Beth (Darleen Greer) is served by Gabe (Paul Briggs) as Karen (Minnie Maloney) describes “Lemon Polenta Cake” in Church Hill Theatre’s 2016 premiere production “Dinner with Friends”. The production team also includes Michael Whitehill, who designed and constructed the set, lighting designer Doug Kaufmann, and design coordinator Brian Draper. Church Hill Theatre regular Kat Melton will run both lights and sound for the production. Church Hill Theatre’s 2016 season continues with Visit to a Small Planet in April, Fiddler on the Roof in June, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in September, and The Game’s Afoot in November.
