The first half of Term Three appears to have slipped by
very quickly as staff and students have settled into a busy
and productive work routine. As you can see from this
bulletin, there have been a wide range of camps,
excursions, competitions and other activities in the past
few weeks. We recently had our annual visit of staff and
students from Takarazuka city in Japan. The program has
now been running for twenty eight years with over three
hundred students having visited Australia and a similar
number of our students having visited Japan. It was
wonderful to also have the Mayor of Takarazuka city pay
a special visit to the school and we appreciated the
Mayor of the City of Melville, Mr Russell Aubrey
welcoming the group at a civic reception. Thank you very
much to the parents who hosted the visiting students
and to Sumika Nishikawa and the Language Department
staff for their organisation of the exchange program.

Our Year 12 students are now approaching their last few
weeks of formal classes with the vast majority looking
forward to their mock exams during the last two weeks
of term. University bound students are able to access
their predicted ATAR score through the Year 11-12
Program Manager and Deputy Principal. The ATAR
predictor is designed to provide students with a sense of
their current achievement and to assist in setting goals
for the remainder of the academic year. To assist students
with this, the school supported by the P&C, has
organised a wide range of after school revision
workshops for students. The results forecast by the ATAR
predictor are predictions only. Final student scores and
ATARs will vary as a result of the moderation of schoolbased marks, scaling of individual subjects, the overall
nature of the state-wide Year 12 cohort in any given year,
and most importantly, the individual student’s
performance in the WACE exam.
Year 12 students will also need to submit applications for
university and Training WA in the near future. Information
will be provided to students on how to do this. Staff at
the school are happy to provide assistance with this very
important task. Feel free to contact us if you have
questions or require assistance as we will be very happy
to work with you to ensure your questions are answered
and have any concerns addressed.
Year 10 students have now commenced exams in English,
Mathematics, Science and Society & Environment. The
purpose of the exams is to introduce students to exam
techniques and procedures expected of upper school
courses, and to provide us with an additional assessment
item that informs us of students’ progress and their
ability to undertake their chosen courses for Year 11. The
exams are valuable for both the students and the Year 10
counselling team. Year 10 students are expected to
attend school in the normal way during the exam
period.
While progress on our massive school building program
often appears to be negligible, there is certainly plenty of
work happening behind the cordoned off sections. At
this point in time the completion of the eastern end of
the H block is expected by late October, 2014. The
Performing Arts Area is scheduled to be ready for the
start of the 2015 school year. The Year 7 Block is still on
track to be completed by the end of September, 2014.
Demolition of hazardous materials in the western end of
H Block will now occur in the Christmas school holidays. The western end of H Block is due to be completed by
April 2015. Program planners employed by the architects
are currently working on an update to the progress of the
project and we will be given this update by the end of
the month.
The project is very complex due to our ‘co-habitation’ of
the school while the work is occurring. We have a good
relationship with the architects and builders (Esslemont
Cockram) and try to accommodate all reasonable
requests to ensure that the project is kept on track. This
inevitably means that staff and students have to put up
with some noise and other inconveniences. However, we
always try to minimise this and have the health and
safety of all members of the school community as our
priority. Any concerns or complaints concerning the
project can be forwarded to Ms Susan McGirr in the first
instance.

It has been a very positive few weeks in regards to uniform at Applecross SHS with nearly 100% of all students
wearing the uniform every day in full. We are wrapped that, with your parental support, we have got across the
life message that in all areas of life and work, there are expectations relating to dress and compliance that are
important. It also helps us to identify students across the school immediately as students and this assists us in
maintaining school security and stability.

Please keep this focus top of mind as Term 3 continues so we maintain this high standard. The executive team
have been making surprise visits to classrooms and will continue to do so randomly over the following weeks to
ensure we are keeping our high standard of dress. Congratulations to all students as a whole.
I also want to congratulate several students (51 altogether!) who have reached 100% attendance over
Semester One. This is an amazing effort that we are acknowledging at assemblies this week. Achieving
consistency in attendance will stand these students in great stead with future employers and in their future
learning pathways, as attendance is a key employability skill. It is worthy to note that many, many students were
in the 96-99% range which is also fabulous. Please be aware that attendance at school of less than 90% is an
area of concern (regardless of the reason) and the Department of Education requires we communicate this to
parents if it occurs. Lower attendance has a researched, direct and linear impact on achievement at school and
this is why we focus on it so much. You can find your child’s attendance percentage for last semester on their
Semester One report.

Soft drinks at school
Parents are reminded that Coke, Redbull, Mother drinks (and the like) are not encouraged at school. They
contain caffeine and can often have an adverse effect on students learning and behaviour. We want all students
to make healthy choices when satisfying their thirst, and would always suggest water at school as a general rule. You will notice our school canteen only stocks healthy options to purchase so we are appealing to all parents to
ensure their child does not bring these drinks with them from home. Whilst this is not a large issue in our
student population, we are concerned when a few students indicate to us that this is their only breakfast, or that
they have had multiple drinks of this nature that day.

Have Sum Fun Competition 2014
The Year 8 - 10 Division of the “Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition” took place on 14 March. Students were
very keen to participate in this quiz night style of competition where students had to work as a group on some
challenging problem solving questions over 4 rounds of eight questions per round.
Extension Camp
Two teams were entered involving two students from each Year 8, 9 and 10. Results were excellent considering
the standard of competition.

Congratulations - Logan McIsaac
Congratulations are extended to Logan McIsaac of Year 11, who has been selected for the State School Boys
Under-19 Soccer team. We wish him well as he represents the state in Sydney from 22 - 29 August and look
forward to hearing the results. Well done Lachlan.

Year 12 Biology Camp
18 students were accompanied by Mr Jeff Mengler (their Biology teacher) and Mr Bruce Ivers (our sustainability
consultant) on the Year 12 Biology camp. The group travelled by coach to The Dryandra Woodland Village about
200kms South East of Perth, where there are several nature reserves managed by the Department of Parks and
Wildlife. Highlights included learning how to set 15 cage traps and catching, then releasing, three Brushtail
possums and visiting Barna Mia, a nocturnal guided walk in a protected enclosure where native Bilbys, Woylies
and Boodies were observed being fed by the keepers. The next day the group travelled to the nearby UWA
Ridgefield farm where activities included soil science and tree planting to help improve salinity and erosion
problems as well as providing future green corridors to help wildlife. The students were enthusiastic and a
pleasure to work with while I was pleased to be able to extend their biological experiences and knowledge.

Year 9 Science and S&E Academic Extension Camp
Extension Camp
This camp was held at The Dryandra Woodland Village (same as the Year 12 Biology Camp) and highlights
include an activity where students were trained in finding tracks and scats of native animals while walking
through the eucalypt woodland. Many students had fun finding evidence of animals while the use of plastic
gloves was found to be very necessary for the fresh samples! When taking the coach to Barna Mia that evening
we luckily missed hitting an Echidna! The students were excited to see some cute endangered marsupial
animals by using red spotlights. The next day we travelled to UWA’s farm situated near Pingelly. On the way we
visited a Biodiesel plant that used local seeds to manufacture fuel - a renewable source that will no doubt
become more common in the future. The farm was a new experience for many and some comments collected
from a survey were:
“I enjoyed helping nature out”.
“The food was fairly good but dinner at home was better”.

“At the farm there was lots of talking so we learnt things”.
“We learnt in a way which we could not in the classroom”.
“It was a memorable event”.
“I loved the idea of the seedlings being big trees in the future”.

Film Club Excursion
An observation by Polish poet Stanislaw Jerzy Lec that “Youth is a gift of nature, but age is a work of art” is an apt
one in relation to the Film Club excursion that took place on the morning of Thursday 31 July. Blending perfectly
the curiosity of youth with the wisdom of old age, this excursion was part of a project called Intergenerational Life
Histories, in which young people interview senior members of our community about their life stories. 18 students
and two teachers travelled to Castledare Retirement Village where they set up their cameras and began
recording the often extraordinary tales of ordinary people who have the years of experience that make for
fascinating story telling.
Spanning decades, these stories took in the horrors of war, the devastating impact of natural disasters, the highs
and lows of the immigrant experience and the strange coincidences that landed people in just such a place at
just such a time to participate in history in the making.
One resident, Kathleen, born during the time of the Great War, was days shy of her 100th birthday on the day of
our visit, but the eight and a half decades of separation between her and her student biographers was evident
only in the contrasting visages, and not the character of the two parties, as human connection transcended age.
It was heartening to see the way in which students responded to the residents with such curiosity, care and
respect, and to witness these qualities being returned in kind. In an age where we often despair about the
self-absorption of youth or their addiction to technology, it was refreshing to be reminded that in reality young
people are much as they always were, and that technology can also be employed positively and thoughtfully. It
was soon as if the cameras were not there and it was just two or three people sitting down for a good chat.
One comment stood out on the return bus journey to school for the way in which it encapsulated the value of an
experience such as this: a student turned to the boys sitting beside him and, unprompted, remarked: “I wish I’d
spent more time with my great-grandfather.”
The Film Club members, apart from returning the finished stories to the residents, are making a short, behindthe-scenes film documenting our experience, which we plan to show at the school at a later date.

Art Students Strongly Represented at ‘Young Originals’
Pre-selection has been completed by the panel of judges for the annual Young Originals Art Exhibition. They
have made these selections from a large number of quality artworks produced by high school students across
the state. Individual schools select and submit the very best artwork in the hope it will be on display to represent
their school.
Artwork by seven Applecross Art students has been chosen for inclusion in the show that will open at the Spectrum Project Space at Edith Cowan University, Mount Lawley on Wednesday 27 August (invitation only).

Japanese Exchange Program 2014

Applecross Senior High School again welcomed Japanese visitors from Takarazuka City in Hyogo Prefecture,
Japan in August. This is the 28th year of our annual exchange. The students come from 11 Junior High Schools
in Takarazuka.
It was very exciting for the Japanese students and three teachers Mr Kanbara, Mr Nakagami and Ms Kuroda to
have the opportunity to visit our school.
• Term Dates
The Japanese students were amazed by our very big green sports ground, tall trees, and spacious quadrangle
areas. They were also interested to see that students move around from classroom to classroom throughout the
day. At their schools in Japan, the students mostly stay in one room and teachers come and go.
All the Japanese students enjoyed a picnic in Kings Park, took lots of photos of Australian animals at Caversham
Wildlife Park, and discovered Perth City and Fremantle. Applecross students in all year groups interacted with
them and enjoyed various activities in Japanese and English.
Japanese students stayed at the homes of 14 Applecross students. Both the Applecross and Japanese students
discovered lots of cultural differences. They respected each other’s cultures and enjoyed finding out about it. An exchange program like this gives students the opportunity to learn about home and school life in another
country.
I would like to thank the 14 Applecross students who kindly offered to host our visiting students this year. I’m
glad that the exchange program was a great success again this year.

Host Students Experience
First night
Nihon Matsuri (Japan Festival)
On Saturday 26 July 14 ,Applecross students
anxiously waited for their Japanese exchange
students to arrive at the Perth International
Airport.
On Saturday, the exchange, Applecross and local
primary school students participated in the Nihon
Matsuri (Japanese Festival). The festival started off
with a speech from various people including the
Mayor of Takarazuka, Ms Nishikawa and two of the
exchange students. Various stalls were set up in the
Science Block including Cosplay, Taiko drumming,
Aizome (tie-dying), and Manga drawing, that were
manned by the host students and other students
who are studying Japanese.

Kings Park
The very next day, on limited sleep, the host families
and exchange students set off to Kings Park. The
students played games such as soccer and onigaku
(Japanese version of tag), and ate lunch together. Some of the exchange students saw black swans on
the lake, and they were astounded by their beauty.
Caversham Wildlife Park
On Tuesday, all of the host and exchange students
went to Caversham Wildlife Park. Students
participated in farm shows - one of the exchange
students even attempted to crack a whip, giving it his
best shot. The favourite part of the day for most of
the students was feeding the kangaroos, grabbing
pellets by the handful and feeding every animal in
sight. After playing a bit of soccer the worn out but
happy students went back to school by bus. They all
enjoyed the bus ride back to school - laughing and
singing the whole way.
Perth Mint
On Wednesday, the exchange students ventured into
Perth City to visit the Perth Mint and many other
sights in the city. The exchange students brought
home bag loads of souvenirs for their families and
friends back home.

at Wireless Hill Park with Year 10 and 11 students who
are studying Japanese.

The Goodbye
The last day was an emotional day for all. Many
students met up to play badminton before returning
home to get ready for the last hours they’d spend
with their new found friends at Applecross. Most
students started crying before even saying their final
goodbyes. The host students held a farewell party,
before the exchange students reluctantly got onto
the bus leaving their host families in tears. All
families were left with many fond memories that they
will cherish forever.
This wouldn’t have been such an extraordinary
experience without the help of the Applecross
Japanese teachers, the Mayor of Takarazuka, Mr
Leech, Mr Coppard and the host families, who were
willing to give up their time for these wonderful
exchange students.

Nihon Matsuri – Japan Festival
The annual Japan Festival held on Saturday 2 August at Applecross Senior High School was enjoyed by a large
number of students who are interested in learning Japanese.
Extension Camp

The event was organised by the Japanese Language Teachers of Applecross and the feeder primary schools
Ardross, Brentwood and Winthrop. The festival provided Year 7 and Year 8 students who are studying Japanese
with an insight into Japanese culture through various activities including Japanese drumming, tie-dying,
origami (paper folding), tea ceremony, kendo (Japanese fencing), cooking, calligraphy, chess and manga
drawing (Japanese comic figures).
The festival was opened by the Mayor of Takarazuka City in Japan who was visiting Perth during the week the
festival was held. The Mayor delighted students by singing and performing part of a traditional Japanese dance. The Mayor’s welcome was followed by a chilling and awe-inspiring demonstration of the traditional Japanese
sport Kendo. Students were then encouraged to participate in all of the activities, all of which proved to be very
popular.
Students who attended the festival were also able to interact with the 14 short-term Japanese Exchange
students from Takarazuka City in Japan, who willingly volunteered to help at each activity. A number of Year 10
and 11 Applecross students who are studying Japanese also helped on the day.
Ms Nishikawa and Mrs Tugwell would like to thank everyone involved who helped make this event so
successful!

Nihon Matsuri - Japan Festival, a student’s perspective

Being the third year that Derek and I have participated in the Nihon Matsuri (Japanese Festival), we were able to
experience a taste of Japanese culture, tradition and cuisine yet again. The participants were primary school and
high school students of all years from schools such as Brentwood, Winthrop, Ardross and of course Applecross
SHS. The activities exhibited this year included Taiko drumming, Aizome, Takoyaki and Dorayaki making, Tea
ceremony and Kendo, all of which everyone could participate in. The cosplay stand was definitely my favourite
stall. We enjoyed dressing up in the very convincing female disguise.

Scimitar String Orchestra Excels
On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August, the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association held its prestigious 25 Annual West Australian Schools’ Orchestra Festival.
Congratulations to the Scimitar String Orchestra, our senior string players at Applecross SHS, who were awarded
‘Excellent’ in A Division for their performance. This is a result of the hard work and long-term commitment that
makes our Music Department ensembles consistently successful.

College tennis information day
On Friday 1 August, four former Applecross Senior
High School tennis students visited the school to talk
to our Year 9 and 10 students about their tennis
careers and experiences after high school. Three of the
students are currently participating in NCAA Division 1
college tennis in the USA, which is the level just below
professional level. Those students are James Mitchell
(graduated in 2012) who is on a tennis scholarship to
Austin Peay University in Tennessee, Ashwin Sharma
(graduated in 2011) who is on a tennis scholarship at
Pacific University in California, and Rhys Johnson
(graduated in 2011) who is on a tennis scholarship at
Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Also attending on
the day was 2004 graduate Bojana Bobusic who
attended the University of California and then went on
to play professionally for a number of years. Bojana
played in the main draw of the Australian Open in
2012 and 2013.
The four former students talked to our students about
the merits of the college tennis pathway, what an
average day as a student athlete looks like, the grades
required to make it and they then answered questions.
Following their presentations, they each played an
exhibition doubles match before taking on our Year 9
and 10 students in some ‘point’ play.
I would like to thank both our former students for
giving up their time and also to the Year 9 and 10
tennis students for their excellent behaviour on the
day.

Year 10 Personal Best Program
On Thursday 7 August, the Year 10 students undertook their third Personal Best Program for the year. During
Periods 3, 4 and 5 the students rotated through 3 different sessions focusing on Resilience, Mental Health and
learning about the Inquiry Process, for completing research assessment tasks and presentations.
The Resilience session focused on being able to BOUNCE BACK, and the tools that you may need to be able to do
this. After identifying stressors for the students they spent time on developing strategies for controlling impulses
in different situations. They also learnt about “But” thinking. An example of this is “I didn’t pass my maths test,
BUT I did the best that I could have.” It is about looking at the positives of what otherwise may be a negative
situation.
Mental Health 101 was presented by Ashlee Harrison, from Zero to Hero. It covered the topics of looking after
yourself and an awareness of what others are going through. She presented up to date statistics on teenage
mental health issues, including the fact that WA is the only state in Australia that has an increasing rate of teen
suicide.
Inquiry Skills presented information about how to go about defining what you researching, locating and using
the relevant sources of reliable information to make your notes, how to organize these to be able to present your
work in an appropriate way. These skills are vital to ensure that students achieve the best possible outcomes
from their work. These skills are also of use in post-school study. If your Year 10 child needs help when
researching, please remind them of the steps they learnt about the process.
Another Personal Best Day will be held in Term 4.

Pastoral Care News
At this time of year some students are feeling stressed and anxious about exams, results and planning for the
future.
There is help and support available on Reachout.com for online information and forums so that you know you
are not alone.
There is also a new program from Beyond Blue for teenagers. Check out the sites and also have a look at the
following youth friendly activities to help manage anxiety and worriers.
The BRAVE Program
If you are a young person who would like help managing worry and anxiety, The BRAVE Program is an
interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of anxiety. The program provides ways for young
people to better cope with their worries. There are also programs for parents.
The BRAVE Program can be used on any computer or tablet device and includes up to 10 sessions that you can
work through at your own pace.
There are interactive activities on:
• anxious body signs and relaxation
• activating helpful thoughts
• victory over your fears
• finding solutions to your problems
• preparing for the future.
We have found it very useful to refer students to it in Student Services. Another user friendly and supportive
opportunity that your daughter may wish to access is a study on Atelophobia, which is outlined on our
additional information page. If your daughter sets very high standards for herself, she may wish to take part. Please contact the study directly.

Information will come home next week about an online research survey being run by Lisa Patterson about
cyberbullying and bystander behaviour.
This is totally voluntary participation and if students choose to do so, they will not be identified in any way at
school. However, we would like to encourage students to participate as it will give the researcher valuable
information about the trends and patterns of behaviour of our teenagers who witness cyberbullying. As we will
be given the overall findings, we hope to use the results to make our bullying programs even more effective and
