Untitled - Australian Formula 3
The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship
In the past two seasons the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship has risen to new heights. Stronger fields and closer racing than ever before
has thrilled spectators and TV audiences right around Australia and indeed the world. With the great tradition of both the Australian Drivers
Championship and international Formula 3 competition behind it, the 2009 Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship looks to be the best yet...
Renewed. Reinvigorated. Rebranded. In 2009 Fifty two
years of Australian Drivers Championship tradition, and
ten years of competitive Formula 3 racing in Australia will
come closer together under one banner to grow Australia’s premier Open Wheel category to new heights.
Previously promoted under the often confusing banner of
either ‘The Australian Formula 3 Championship’, the
‘Australian Drivers Championship or ‘The Gold Star’, 2009
witnesses a new title for the premier Wings and Slicks
category in Australia designed to encompass the best of
both worlds.
Hence the rebranding of the series to ‘The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship’.
With the new title Australia’s only International category,
Formula 3, is recognised in the same breath as the prestigious ADC, wherein the winner receives the CAMS Gold
Star award, the oldest continually awarded motorsport
trophy in Australia.
Therefore F3 champions who won in the Gold Star era –
from 2005 onwards – can now more easily be recognised
in the same breath as similar winners like Mark Skaife,
John Bowe, Alf Costanzo, Bib Stilwell and lex Davison.
It’s all about tying in the latest generation of Australian
Open Wheel racing to it’s amazing past.
Hence the series also continues to have international
credibility, thanks to the worldwide recognition of the
‘Formula 3’ brand and its position as the key developer of
driving talent for Formula 1 (In 2008 19 of the 22 drivers
in Formula 1 had raced in F3).
But now the series also speaks better to the domestic
market thanks to its embrace of the 53 years of tradition
that makes up the Australian Drivers Championship. It’s a
powerful combination.
In Australian Motorsport, nothing is faster than the
Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship.
Mixing some of the most impressive open wheel racing cars
going around and young talent all competing for a future in
motorsport, the F3ADC is a melting pot of amazing racing
and creates one hell of a show.
Racing in four states (See the 2009 information page) and
at some of the best tracks in the country, the F3ADC offers
a huge variety of markets, of circuits and of exposure potential for series partners.
The F3ADC also offers several marquee events, including
the Clipsal 500 Adelaide and the F3 Tasmanian SuperPrix,
the biggest ‘domestic’ Open Wheel race in Australia and a
massive motorsport event in Tasmania.
It’s Australia’s highest speed thrill ride that covers over 50
years of magnificent racing history and some of the finest
drivers – from here and abroad – to race in the Australian
Drivers Championship
53 years of Australian driving champions
This list of names represents some of the finest racing talent ever to race on Australian soil. As winners of the Australian Drivers Championship and the CAMS Gold
Star, they hold a special place in the history of motorsport as the best of the very best. Since 2005 drivers who have won in Australian Formula 3 have taken the
Gold Star competition to even higher levels of competition than ever before - adding their names to this most illustrious group of names.

The 2009 championship schedule
Eight rounds. Eight tracks. Four states. The 2009 Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship schedule takes Australia’s fastest cars to more tracks and
more markets than ever before. Starting with the Clipsal 500, the series then becomes a major part of the Shannons Nationals and will be a headline act
alongside great categories like the GT3 Cup Challenge, GT Championship, Australian Manufacturers Championship and Commodore Cup Series.
Round 1 – Clipsal 500 Adelaide – Adelaide Street Circuit, South
Australia. March 19 – 22
Wings and slicks racing at the Clipsal 500. It’s a demanding challenge but the stars and cars of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers
Championship are well and truly up for the task; on the series
return in 2008, following a four year absence, F3 driver Neil
McFadyen lowered the outright track record by over two seconds, lapping three seconds faster than a V8 Supercar in the
process.
Round 2 – Wakefield Park Raceway, Goulburn, NSW.
April 24 – 26
Cars from the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship lap
Wakefield Park every 50 seconds or so; but that means is that
the action comes even thicker and faster than every.
Round 3 – Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Phillip Island, VIC.
May 15 – 27
In Australia, nothing is faster around the 4.46km GP Track two
hours southeast of Melbourne than a Formula 3 car – in fact, its
quicker than most things in the world. Averaging over 190km/hr
per lap, and generating corner forces in excess of 3G, the F3 lap
record of 1m27.2s is not only five seconds faster than a V8 Supercar – but three seconds quicker than Valentino Rossi’s Yamaha MotoGP world championship winning motorcycle!
Round 4 – Winton Motor Raceway, Benalla, VIC.
June 26 – 27
A place where wings and slicks cars work well. The tight layout
puts a premium on grip and F3 cars generate a lot of it. Winton
often produces tight racing with a leading car being hounded by
a pack of aggressive pursuers.
Round 5 – Eastern Creek International Raceway, Sydney, NSW.
July 17 – 19
The Cool and crisp winter air of Sydney welcomes the Formula 3 Australian
Drivers Championship for it’s now traditional July date. Almost always contested in bright – if a tad chilly – conditions, EC is in many ways similar to the
Island – fast, flowing and a Formula 3 cars happy hunting ground.
Round 6 – Oran Park Grand Prix Circuit, Sydney, NSW.
August 28 – 30
This is likely to be an emotional race meeting as Augusts Oran Park date with
the Australian Drivers Championship could well be its last. From its days of
hosting the Australian Grand Prix and amazing F5000 Gold Star races in the
1970s, Oran Park has always been a favourite of the premier Open Wheel series in Australia. Look for an emotional send-off from a circuit known for pressure-cooker races of high quality.
Round 7 – Tasmanian Formula 3 SuperPrix at Symmons Plains, Launceston,
TAS. Oct 16 – 18
The Tasmanian Formula 3 SuperPrix is the marquee Race of the 2009 Formula 3
Australian Drivers Championship. A stand alone event where open wheel cars
are the headline, the fast Symmons Plains raceway is an ideal hunting ground
for F3 racers and without fail produces amazing racing, with cars ducking and
weaving in a long freight train of cars as they tow down the back straight.
With massive local media coverage and a big local crowd, the F3 SuperPrix is
the longest race (45mins) on the calendar and the one every driver and team
wants to win.
Round 8 – Sandown Park Raceway, Melbourne, VIC.
November 28 – 29
The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship will return to Sandown for the
first time in 2009 after a five year absence, and the challenging circuit just off
Dandenong road will provide a fantastic place for the end of year showdown to
decide the 53rd winner of the Australian Drivers Championship.
Formula 3 cars - Australia's fastest..
Formula 3 is Australia’s only truly international category. These cars are the same as the ones that race in Great Britain, across Europe, in Asia and Japan.
F3 cars are the very best at giving young drivers the tools needed to not only drive cars for a profession - in Formula 1, IndyCar or V8 Supercars, for
example - but also for training them in the art of race craft and vehicle setup. These impressive racing machines are also mighty, mighty fast..
Chassis: Carbon Composite Tub with fibreglass panels.
Manufactured by DALLARA, spa. Italy.
Gearbox: Sequentially operated six forward and one reverse
speed gearbox. Made by Hewland, UK.
Weight: 550kg (including driver)
Power: 210 – 230 BHP (Approx 190kw) at approx. 6800 rpm.
Engine: Two-litre production based four cylinder engine made by
major car companies including Mercedes Benz, Opel, Renault,
Mugen-Honda and FIAT. Race prepared by engine tuning companies to F3 specifications. All engines are controlled via a F3mandated 26mm air restrictor to cap revs and provide engine
parity.
Performance:
0 – 100km/hr – 2.3 seconds
0 – 200 km/hr – 5.9 seconds
Top Speed – 275km/hr
cornering forces – 2.5 to 3G, depending on circuit.
Formula 3 cars are developed over a three-year cycle to
contain costs. Australian Formula 3 runs one generation
behind the European and British series’ to allow for a
supply of vehicles whilst still keeping the current
technology, performance and safety values.
Thus, the top level cars in Australia are the cars made
between 2005—2007 (Dallara F307).
Cars made between 2002 - 2004 run in the F3 National
Class, whilst the 1999 / 2000 / 2001 model cars race in the
F3 Trophy Class, giving F3 chassis long life and owners
time to recoup their investment over many years.
media, television and press exposure values
In the 2008 season, Formula 3 Australia delivered excellent
value for money for competing teams and drivers, and series sponsors, via its comprehensive exposure package.
Naming Rights supplier Kumho Tyres Australia received direct references (by TV commentators or presenters), visual
exposure (logos on cars, driving suits or circuits) or promotional airtime (Adverts, feature stories etc) in over 75% of
F3A’s 2008 TV package. This totals an exposure return of
approximately $350,000, based on airtime rates and time
generated.
This is well over 100% of the sponsors initial financial input
to the series.
This does not include references and coverage in the media
as detailed on this page.
The Australian Formula 3 Championship is exposed to a
diverse and wide array of spectators at each round.
The Clipsal 500 Adelaide attracts 290,000 spectators
over four days.
Shannons Nationals rounds - of which Formula 3 is the
headline act for seven rounds - attract an average of 4000
spectators. Total attendance for the 2008 Championship
season was over 400,000.
The Australian Formula 3 Championship receives regular
coverage on the popular SBS show, Speedweek.
This coverage is also shown on FOX Sports’ three channels, on the show Inside Speed, and repeated regularly.
The SBS coverage receives an average of 210,000 viewers per week, nationally.
FOX Sports’ coverage is beamed to overt 1.8 million
subscribers, and played regularly in bars, clubs and hotels
to a large audience. The estimated audience of the Fox coverage is 50,000 – 85,000 per show.
TV Coverage is also shown on ESPN STAR SPORTS in
Asia and MOTORS TV in Europe. Other International
distribution opportunities are being investigated.
This package produces consistent viewership and a
strong platform to advertise products to a major, national
audience.
With the prominent branding on offer the package can
deliver a return of more than $1m in airtime value to a
major car or team sponsor (Based on total time on air and
combined SBS / Foxtel Advertising rates).
Formula 3 Australia’s website, www.formula3.com.au, is
hugely popular and registers an average of 800,000 hits /
month. An average of 50,000 pages are viewed each
month.
The series receives significant international media exposure, second only to V8 Supercars in terms of content and
amount.
Major international publications NZ Speed sport, AutoSport
(UK), Crash.net, Autosport.com, motorsport.com and formula3.cc provide regular coverage with Asian and other
European websites in particular regularly running F3 media
content.
In 2008 the series received radio coverage on major stations in Adelaide, Melbourne (SEN Sports), Sydney, Brisbane and Launceston
Significant print media exposure was also generated in
MOTOR Magazine, WHEELS Magazine, QANTAS: The
Australian Way, Inside Sport Magazine, Notebook
Magazine, as well as regular news updates and feature
articles in Australian motorsport mainstays Motorsport
News, Motorsport E-News and Australian Auto Action.

TanderSport was formed in late 2005 and
since then its professionalism and dedication
to winning has proved the relatively “new”
team a force to be reckoned with. TanderSport began its assault on the Australian
Formula 3 Championship in 2006.
As a single-car team in 2006 & 2007,
TanderSport consistently punched above its
weight scoring 5th outright in 2006 and a very
close 2nd in 2007 only 2 points behind eventual winner. In 2008 TanderSport purchased
a new F307 and expanded to a three-car
team. Its drivers placed 2nd in Championship class (narrowly missing the win by 4
points) and 4th & 5th in National Class.
Despite both National drivers missing 3
rounds, each were only 2 and 3 points
respectively off a podium position.
With the best crew in pit lane and talented
drivers behind the wheel, 2009 is set to be
yet another successful year for TanderSport.
