Team West 8 FIRST IMPRESSIONS b y Wend y MacN augh t on F I B AY I C O C N E A N C SA A S C O C I N A FR P INDEX Humble New Gate Layers Learn Program Ecologies Flexibility Team AMERICAN LANDSCAPE TRADITION St. Louis Gateway Arch T E AM WEST 8 Golden Gate Bridge Washington Monument Approach for the Presidio The most powerful and celebrated public spaces are sensitively integrated into their natural, cultural, ecological, and scenic contexts -- with each value accommodating and inspiring individual and collective visitor experiences. The proposed Gateway would follow that tradition – a clean, understated, declarative and respectful design that would create a destination unlike any other. To succeed, the Gateway must be carefully woven into and also respond to the unique choreography of the Presidio itsel f, Crissy Field, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the City beyond. And, it must offer both a large frame for civic events and intimate spaces for reflection and repose. The solution: the dialogue between what was then, now, and could be must be seamless, simple, transformational, and most important, apt. Precedents in design and historic settings inform and inspire the West 8 team, particularly two designs once viewed as provocative and now seen as classic, IM Pei’s Louvre Pyramid in Paris and Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Of the former, author Paul Heyer said, “Through simplicity the new stands with the old, each acknowledging the other.” Lin said of her design set within the National Mall: “I didn’t want to destroy a living park. You use the landscape. You don’t fight with it. You absorb the landscape . . . When I looked at the site I just knew I wanted something horizontal that took you in, that made you feel safe within the park . . . Simple in form and spectacular in concept, over time these two sites have become beloved. Moreover, their memory inducing, value rich settings could absorb not only them, but leverage r ich, meaningful and memorable visitor experiences. We believe that apt gestures, such as our proposed Eclipse, remind us that a melding of modern forms in a picturesque settings, can transform the familiar while stirring and enriching our souls. They grow out of an understanding of a cultural landscape’s dynamic evolution, while balancing design, programmatic and stewardship objectives. This is our philosophical approach for The Gateway, and it is also how we measure success. Sincerely, C h a r les A.
