The Taming Of The Shrew
(original production) by Philip Tull
Thursday 24 Jan - Saturday 2 Feb
Led by director Edward Hall, internationally
award-winning all-male company Propeller
returns to Norwich following its acclaimed
productions of Henry V and The Winter’s Tale
in 2012.
Its stagecraft, technical ability and theatricality
result in dazzling productions which will move,
delight and uplift you.
THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
(Thur 24, Fri 25, Sat 26 mat & eve, Thur 31,
Fri 1 mat)
In The Taming Of The Shrew two, disguised,
competing suitors clamour for the hand of beautiful
Bianca whilst gold digging Petruchio agrees to wed
her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate sight-unseen.
The difference between marrying for love and
marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly
difficult to judge. This brash, brutal and darkly comic
story pulls no punches.
Twelfth Night
(original production) by Manuel Harlan
TWELFTH NIGHT
(Tues 29, Wed 30, Fri 1 eve,
Sat 2 mat & eve)
In a quest to understand the nature of truth itself,
Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken
identity, transformation and deception. With a man
playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality
are almost indistinguishable on Propeller’s island of
Illyria. Dark and delightful, the play asks ‘What
happens when you fall in love with the wrong
person?’ and the answer is both beautiful and
bittersweet.
Images: Helen Maybanks
Both plays explore how being in love with the wrong
person reveals true feeling as Shakespeare asks us to
examine what makes happiness. One thing is certain
- nobody does Shakespeare like Propeller.

Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller comes to the Theatre Royal in a double first
–the first large-scale production of the musical at the Theatre Royal and Ray Jeffery’s award
winning production will be the first Sondheim musical to be produced by the Norfolk and Norwich
Operatic Society.
Often regarded as Sondheim’s masterpiece of musical theatre, this musical thriller, first produced
on Broadway in 1979, tells the story of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to
London after 15 years' transportation on trumped-up charges. He seeks vengeance against his
accusers, teams up with a piemaker, Mrs. Lovett, and opens a barbershop above her pie shop.
The one thing different about Todd’s barbershop, however, is that no one who walks in for a
shave is ever seen again……
From the opening harmonies your suspense will be held vice-like throughout this magnificent
score, but the vice is loosened to allow Sondheim to introduce his comic turns and love songs
which create his emotionally rounded work of art. If you’ve only seen Tim Burton’s film version of
Sweeney Todd hearing Sondheim’s score played by a 23-piece live orchestra will be something of
a revelation.
The combination of Stephen Sondheim and the Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society’s
reputation for the highest possible standards means that this rare opportunity to see Sweeney
Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street should not be missed.

From Susan Hill’s novel, now a major motion
picture starring Daniel Radcliffe
Monday 11 - Saturday 16 February
Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill
Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman in Black
combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic
quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an
evening of unremitting drama, transporting the audience into a
terrifying and ghostly world.
A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his
terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins
innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest
memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to
blur and the flesh begins to creep...
Now celebrating its 23rd year in the West End, over 7 million people
have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful
theatre events ever staged.

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL is a hilarious new musical comedy based on the hit movie, that centres on three
office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. They conspire

thought provoking and even a little romantic, 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL is about teaming up
and taking care of business.
This show features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song, 9 to 5, which won
her an Oscar nomination and 4 Grammy Award nominations along with her
new Tony® and Grammy nominated score. With 18 original numbers,

THE LADYKILLERS is a classic black comedy; a sweet little old lady,
alone in her house, is pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing…
Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided
house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in
Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped, but Mrs
Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is
only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon,
to help her, Mrs W. is alone with five desperate men.
But who will be forced to face the music?
On Thursday the part of Mrs Wilberforce will be played by Beverley Walding.

Richard Alston Dance Company
Tuesday 12 - Wednesday 13 March
For the company’s eagerly awaited return, Richard Alston is delighted to
be presenting his new piece Buzzing Round the Hunnisuccle. This
commission, by the world renowned Columbia Foundation, is inspired by
Alston’s long held fascination with the music of Jo Kondo. In Buzzing
Round the Hunnisuccle Alston celebrates the contrasting nature of
two Kondo compositions, combining the rapid light rhythms of Isthmus
with the calm-hushed chords of Hunnisuccle, in a dance of nimble and
breathtaking precision.
Shimmer is danced to the sun-drenched music of Ravel played live.
Fashion designer Julien Macdonald's fabulous, jewel-encrusted
cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling streaks of limpid choreography
in a ravishingly beautiful piece of theatre.
Alston’s effervescent The Devil in the Detail, is set to the music of
‘King of Ragtime’ Scott Joplin, and will close the evening in style.
Irresistible classics such as Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer are
blended with the lightness and finesse of Alston’s choreography.
Michelin-star chef, Galton Blackiston,
gives our kitchens a rave r eview.
When Galton Blackiston says his Bryan Turner kitchen is ‘perfect in every way’*, you
know you are onto something. We designed Galton’s kitchen to meet his many
needs: family life, entertaining, even cookery demonstrations. Chosen for our creativity
and craftsmanship, Galton says he can’t imagine his kitchen any other way.
"Alston's barefoot dancers look as if they have been sprinkled

quietly moving dances."

Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Mon 25)
Sung in English
This high energy, laugh-a-minute comedy about making mistakes in love is one of Mozart’s most famous
operas. In one day, two pairs of fiancés are parted, and new fiancés found – or so it seems. Discovering they
are not at all the people they thought they were is strange, exciting, and very embarrassing.
Paul Higgins’ new period production will be sung by a remarkable cast, including Laura Mitchell, Paula
Sides, Richard Mosley-Evans and Kitty Whately (Rosina in ETO’s The Barber of Seville in 2012).
Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra (Tues 26)
Sung in Italian with English surtitles
In this compelling drama set in the Italian port of Genoa, the title character is a former pirate who returns to
the city to become its leader. Verdi’s depiction of the shimmering Mediterranean is wonderful. So too are the
characters he creates, from Simon, the rough-hewn buccaneer (sung by Craig Smith), to his spiteful
adversary, his own father-in-law (Fiesco, Keel Watson).
The large orchestra and chorus make taking this opera on the road a massive undertaking, so this is a rare
chance to see this little-toured masterpiece outside of London.
Donizetti’s The Siege of Calais (L’assedio di Calais) (Wed 27)
Sung in Italian with English surtitles
Donizetti’s rarely performed epic tells the story of the Burghers of Calais, who offered up their lives to save
their citizens from the English army. The opera includes poignant scenes between the young couple at the
heart of the drama (Paula Sides and mezzo Helen Sherman in one of
the very last roles written for castrato), and between the leader of the city Friends & Corporate Club:
(Eddie Wade) and his anguished followers. Meanwhile, at the gates, the Bands A & B £10 OFF Wed only

The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to
Norwich Theatre Royal following its triumphant and critically
acclaimed sell out run in London.
Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael
Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill - a play within
a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it follows the backstage
antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through
rehearsals, to a shambolic first night in Weston–super-Mare, and a
final disastrous performance in Stockton-on-Tees.

RISING
DAMP
by
Eric Chappell
Monday 17 - Saturday 22 June
Monday 10 - Saturday 15 June
There is no rest for the wicked and Derren Brown returns next year with a brand new live
show, which will embark on a nationwide UK tour from March 2013.
The acknowledged master of psychological illusion, fresh from the hugely successful two-year
run of his 2012 Olivier award- winning show DERREN BROWN: SVENGALI will once again
mesmerise, shock and entertain the nation. Derren says: "I enjoy the stage shows more than
anything else. Live on stage is the best place for what I do: it's unpredictable, and the audience
knows there's no possibility of judicious editing”.
On stage as well as on TV Derren is in a class of his own, exhilarating audiences with his unique
brand of entertainment. For the past twelve years he has created TV and stage performances that
have stunned audiences, debunked the paranormal and encouraged many to improve and enhance
their own mental abilities. His first show appeared in 2000, Derren Brown: Mind Control, and was
followed with Trick of the Mind, Trick or Treat and a series of Specials including the controversial
Russian Roulette, the hugely popular Events, Hero at 30,000 Feet and the more recent Derren
Brown: The Experiments, which won the 2012 BAFTA award for Best Entertainment Show.
ITV’s top comedy of all time, RISING DAMP, comes to the stage
in a brand-new production from the Comedy Theatre Company,
producers of the stage versions of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies
and BBC TV’s BIRDS OF A FEATHER.
An unnamed northern university town is home to Rupert Rigsby,
landlord of arguably the seediest, most run-down boarding house
that England has to offer. His unlucky tenants include Ruth
Jones, an administrator at the university; Alan, a medical student;
and Philip, who is studying town and country planning. Between
them, Alan and Philip are the focus and foil of the majority of
Rigsby's many prejudices, usually at the expense of his dignity
and standing in the eyes of Miss Jones, with whom he is
hopelessly and pathetically in love.
“The stage version of ITV's best and certainly most highly
respected sitcom to date, Rising Damp shines as a masterwork
and is a real highlight. Writer Eric Chappell's fabulous dialogue
sparkles to this day. There's really not much more we can say it's just a fantastic night out all-round.”

Robert Cray returns to the UK, to promote a brand new album Nothin’ But
Love, his much anticipated sixteenth studio album.
For thirty-plus years Robert Cray has laid down track after track of good-time,
uptown, low-down blues. He's won five Grammys and been nominated for 11
more.
Robert Cray has been known as one of the most popular artists in blues and
soul music. Cray helped to shape the blues on the national scene in the 1980s
with his breakthrough album Strong Persuader in 1986. His soulful and creative
guitar work has been a dominant force
in blues. Over the years Cray’s musical Sunday 24 March, 2.30pm
influence has been recognised and

acknowledged.
The Soldiers created history by being
the first group of serving soldiers to
hit the British pop charts. They are
soldiers first and foremost, having
served in Afghanistan, Iraq and
Kuwait. They are real life heroes, have
several medals between them and
can be called up at any time.
Their two top 10 albums, Coming
Home and Letters Home, released in
the space of a year, exceeded sales of
800,000 and have helped raise over
half a million pounds for army
charities. Their third album, Message
to You was released in October.
Yamato are master performers.
They take the ancient art of taiko
drumming and bring it bang up-to-date
in an exhilarating display of expertise
and athleticism that has thrilled
audiences worldwide.
Yamato's nine performers display their
breathtaking expertise on over 20
drums, varying from huge barrel-like
Odaikos to hand-held instruments.
Combined with exquisite bronze
cymbals, vocals and bamboo flutes,
Yamato create a kaleidoscope of sound.

JUNIOR ARTS COURSES
by Simon Stephens
“Everything human beings do finishes up bad
in the end. Everything good human beings
ever make is built on something monstrous.
Nothing lasts. We certainly won’t...”
In the library of a grammar school, seven
sixth-formers are preparing for their mock-A
Levels and nearing the end of their school
lives. Nominated for the 2010 TMA Best Play
Award, Stephens describes his play as “The
History Boys on crack”. Contemporary and
unnerving, Punk Rock follows the story of a
group of educated, intelligent and aspirational
young people – but step-by-step the
dislocation, disjunction and latent violence
simmering under the surface of success is
revealed.
“Punk Rock confirms Simon Stephens as one of
the most important and exciting British
playwrights working today". Variety

Brochure 62 (26.10.2012)_Layout 1 05/11/2012 12:28 Page 55
These are marvellous times for the arts in Norwich
and Norfolk. Always confident and
outward-looking, they have recently taken on an
international perspective which can only help the
County and City’s image throughout the world.
Hot on the heels of the reopening of St George’s
Theatre in Yarmouth, SeaChange’s work with
European circus artists, the Festival’s coup with
Robert Wilson’s WALKING at Holkham and the
Writers Centre’s achievement in securing
Unesco’s branding of Norwich as a City of
Literature comes the news that Houghton Hall in
North Norfolk has secured, for a limited season in
2013, the return of 83 Old Masters, mainly from
the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
This is an astounding, unprecedented coup.
There are – among others - paintings by
Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Murillo,
Velasquez, Poussin and Giordano – and all
hanging in exactly the same lush staterooms from
which they were sold in 1779 to Catherine the
Great.
And in a further delicious development the
exhibition will include not only Velasquez’ great
portrait of Pope Clement IX, but also its parallel in
Francis Bacon’s Screaming Pope, generously
loaned by the Sainsbury Centre here in Norwich.
This exhibition, in the ornate setting of the
staterooms of Houghton Hall, will be one of the
international art world’s premier events of 2013.
There is a limited number
of tickets for each
half-hour slot between
May and September
2013, and tickets will also get you entrance to the
extensive grounds with their sculptures by
(among others) James Turrell and Richard Long,
to the prize-winning walled garden with its
fountain of fire, to the Tea Room, and to the
playground where the children can enjoy
themselves while the grownups take in the
paintings.
Tickets for HOUGHTON REVISITED are on sale
exclusively through the Theatre Royal, which is
particularly proud to be associated. We expect
that national and international demand will
accelerate over the next few months as publicity
increases, so you may want to book your slot
early.
I encourage anyone with an interest in art or
architecture, history or heritage, to take
advantage of next summer’s exhibition which
future generations will count us lucky to have had,
literally, on our doorstep.
And, as always, if you’d like to ask or tell me
anything about the work that we at the Theatre
Royal do, I’d be pleased to hear from you.

Dr Nicholas Penny, the Director of the National

recreate some episodes or circumstances in the
past, but none can match for sheer verve and
ambition with the collaboration between the State
Museum of the Hermitage and the Marquess of
Cholmondeley which will reassemble in Houghton
Hall the magnificent art collection of England’s
first Prime Minister.”

Education
Education
“This was education at its absolute best”
As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre
Royal regards education as central to its
function, as shown by our charitable
objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and
advance education, particularly by the
production of educational plays and the
encouragement of the arts, including the
arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and
music and to formulate, prepare and
establish schemes therefore.”
These pages give an indication of the range
and scale of that education work.

DANCE WORKSHOPS and RESIDENCIES
Organised in conjunction with Northern
Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Richard
Alston Dance Company, and Norfolk Dance.
“I would thoroughly recommend this experience...The project was
appropriately challenging and hard work, but well worth it! In my 14 years
of teaching I have never been so proud of the efforts of all involved.” Teacher
THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT
BACKSTAGE TOURS
Now in its twelfth year, this biannual music
project aims to break down the barriers
associated with the arts and theatre in
general and opera and dance in particular.
Free teachers workshops are offered to
both teachers with specialist music skills
and to non-specialists, giving an
introduction to composing music in school.
Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2
of the National Curriculum in terms of
listening, composing and appraising,
workshops are followed by a programme of
activity involving residential work in schools
with professional musicians which leads
to a performance on stage at the
Theatre Royal.
Offered to schools and other
community groups to explore the technical
side of the theatre (these can be tailored to
suit your needs). Talks on other areas of the
theatre’s operation, including its history,
Marketing and customer care, are also
available.
