The requirements for safety relief valves on boilers application are described in TRD 421 and the US code ASME Section I. For process industry the standards are AD 2000 resp. ASME VIII. Together with the Pressure Equipment Directive a complete set of european standards will be established. The standard ISO EN 4126 part 1 to 7 defines the different types of safety devices. In the process industry besides spring loaded safety valves also pilot operated valves are used. For the protection of boilers – because of the high operation forces – the use of disc type springs enables to install large loaded safety valves also on high pressures. According to the German standards these safety valves will in most cases be equipped with a pneumatic actuator where a supplementary closing force is obtained and the valve can be opened at pressure below. By means of these pneumatic support, – i.e. superheater and reheater safety – valves, with high pressure loss at the inlet, can be kept in a stable open position. In addition, Sempell offers pilot operated safety valves, which are medium operated according to the relieving principle. For very small blow-off capacities and for protection of liquids, safety valves with small diameters, also call thermal expansion valves, are used. For valves sizing and selection, the Sempell software package “BABSY” is available. The advantages of direct acting safety valve will be combined with the advantages of controlled safety valves. With the control unit STE4 a fully TÜV type tested system is available. All control paths are three times redundant and the unit is working according to the fail safe principle. The functions pressure sensing, electrical control and pneumatic operation are split in separate housings. This modular design enables a high flexibility in difficult conditions, i.e. long distances or specific safety requirements. The efficiency of plant operation can be increased by application of pneumatically assisted operation on a spring loaded safety valve. The advantages of direct acting safety valve will be combined with the advantages of controlled safety valves With the control unit STE5 a fully TÜV type tested system is available. In comparison to the use of spring loaded safety valves the number of installed components can be reduced drastically. SESITEST enables the accurate assessment of set-pressure and other safety valve functional characteristics in situ under normal operating plant conditions. With SESITEST there is no need to raise the line pressure or to remove the valve from the plant. An air operated, low friction piston entes an opening force to the stem of the safety valve. This force makes up the difference between the system pressure and the set pressure. The signals are recorded on the connected Computer and the valve characteristics are determined automatically online. The system is very open, all signals can be visualized each time and there are many tools available for analysis and documentation. The software SESI has been specially designed by SEMPELL and incorporates our vast experience in operating and testing safety relief valves. The software also allows the selection of various test sequences and output documentation formats, and includes a database in which valve identification and test data can be stored furthermore additional graphical analysis and calculations can be carried out with our software package.
