Annual Conference & Exhibition
June 14-19, 2015

Program Overview
The mission of the PHATS/SPHEM Annual Meetings is to provide educational and problem solving
opportunities for athletic trainers and equipment managers at every level of professional hockey. This is
done through our educational symposiums, business meetings, exhibit hall with our many valued vendors
and recognition programs for our members.
EDUCATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
At least 15 hours of seminars and workshops are offered to members during the Annual Meetings, with
topics and speakers representing the entire spectrum of hockey. The symposium is designed specifically
for the needs of hockey professionals and provides a unique opportunity for members to collaborate and
build understanding across both professions and leagues. The National Athletic Trainers Association, the
Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, the Athletic Equipment Managers Association and the National
Strength and Conditioning Association, all certifying organizations for both professions, recognizes the
PHATS/SPHEM Educational Symposium.
BUSINESS MEETINGS
The PHATS/SPHEM Annual Meetings offer the most timely and useful educational resources available to
professional hockey athletic trainers and equipment managers. Additionally, it provides a unique forum
for members to explore the issues that are unique to their work environment. Members meet in general
sessions, to share common concerns that exist across all leagues, as well as in league-specific settings,
where pertinent issues can be addressed. Because PHATS/SPHEM offers the only such problem solving
opportunity, the NHL and most professional hockey leagues, NCAA teams and the Canadian Hockey
League send representatives to participate in these important league-level meetings.
EXHIBIT HALL
Another important component of the PHATS/SPHEM Annual Meeting is the Exhibit Hall. Manufacturers
have been invited to show their wares since the early days of the Athletic Trainers Association. Even as
the number of exhibitors has increased, the friendly atmosphere has remained, making PHATS/SPHEM a
favorite of both equipment manufacturers and sports medicine suppliers alike. But, PHATS/SPHEM is not
all handshakes and greetings. It remains one of the few working exhibits where members come equipped
with purchase orders and serious interest in new technologies and services. Because it is attended by
more ice hockey athletic trainers and equipment managers than any other exhibition, PHATS/SPHEM offers
exhibitors an exclusive venue for testing and showing new hockey related products.
RECOGNITION
A final objective of the PHATS/SPHEM Annual Meetings is to increase awareness of members’ dedication
and professionalism. During the annual Hall of Fame Dinner, one member of PHATS or SPHEM is honored
for his contribution and service by being inducted into the PHATS/SPHEM Wall of Honor, located in the
Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario. In addition to the Hall of Fame presentation, several members are
recognized for their years of service during the Annual Recognition Program Ceremony.

Speaker and Meeting Session Overview
SATURDAY, JUNE 13
8:00-5:00 pm: PHATS Course: Myokinematic Restoration by the Postural Restoration Institute
Session Overview: This advanced lecture and lab course explores the biomechanics of contralateral and
ipsilateral myokinematic lumbo-pelvic-femoral dysfunction. Treatment emphasizes the restoration of pelvicfemoral alignment and recruitment of specific rotational muscles to reduce synergistic predictable patterns of
pathomechanic asymmetry. Emphasis will be placed on restoration, recruitment and retraining activities using
internal and external rotators of the femur, pelvis and lower trunk. Guidance will be provided on how to inhibit
overactive musculature. This will enable the course participant to restore normal resting muscle position.
Participants will be able to immediately apply PRI clinical assessment and management skills when treating
diagnoses such as “piriformis syndrome”, right ilio-sacral joint dysfunction, and low back strain.
Speakers: Michael Cantrell, MPT, PRC
Mike graduated from the University of Georgia in 1981 with a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics.
After a period in the U.S. Army, he completed his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from
Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Mike’s orthopedic skills continued to advance
as he began practicing at the University of Georgia as the sole physical therapist for a
population of 30,000 students. In 1992, he and his wife Tassie opened their private practice where Postural
Restoration techniques are carried out with patients presenting a variety of diagnoses and often traveling
from surrounding states. The Cantrell Center became a Postural Restoration Certified Center in 2006. Mike’s
passion and reputation for successful clinical outcomes and his background in nutrition, sports medicine
and Postural Restoration has led to consultation and speaking opportunities within his local community and

Speaker: Lawrence L. Spriet, PhD
Dr. Lawrence L. Spriet is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Health and
Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph in Canada. Dr. Spriet conducts basic research
examining how human skeletal muscle generates the large amounts of energy (using fat and
carbohydrate as fuels) that are needed to exercise and compete in sporting situations and
how high-intensity intermittent training increases the ability to make energy.
He also conducts practical research to examine whether suggested “ergogenic” aids actually augment muscle
metabolism and/or improve human exercise performance (e.g. pyruvate, taurine, caffeine) and the importance
of hydration status and counteracting the negative effects of dehydration on performance in elite ice hockey
players.
Dr. Spriet serves as the Chair of the Canadian and US arms of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and
is a member of the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition Academic Advisory Board. He is a member of several
physiological and exercise physiology societies and is an associate editor for several scientific journals.

8:00-9:30 am: PHATS: The Champion’s Code: Life Lessons of Ethics and Accountability from the Sports
World to the Business World
Session Overview: Ever wonder why certain teams are SUCCESSFUL whereas others aren’t? Ross explains
WHY — in an engaging and visually entertaining style that’s designed to improve YOUR organization’s
productivity, morale and bottom-line profitability...

Speaker and Meeting Session Overview Continued
Ross’ signature program, “The Champion’s Code: Life Lessons of Ethics & Accountability from the Sports World
to the Business World,” is based on more than six years of research that resulted in two critically acclaimed
series of sports-business books.
The first examines how and why certain teams win world championships; while the other chronicles the
unwritten and unspoken rules in the world of sports, or “codes” as they are known, which explores the fine
line between cheating and gamesmanship — and the consequences involved when that line is crossed.
Ross interviewed more than 1,000 professional athletes and coaches for the six books and along the way
he saw some fascinating patterns, metrics and trends develop among certain individuals who possessed a
very unique DNA. For these unique individuals, or “champions,” it wasn’t always about winning, it was about
following their moral compass in order to play the game the right way — with respect and integrity — in
order to achieve success. In his presentation, Ross identifies upwards of 100 unique characteristics and traits
that are common among champions, which he then ties into poignant life lessons and inspirational stories that
relate back to his client’s event theme and desired learner outcomes.
Based largely on the “Good to Great” ideology of how the best companies are able to separate themselves
from the rest of the pack through dynamic leadership and extraordinary customer service, Ross’ program
reinforces the concept that individuals win games, but TEAMS win championships. Momentum, roles, buy-in,
motivation, consistency, sacrifice, trust, chemistry, work-ethic, innovation, karma, and being humble — they’re
all a part of what it takes to become the best of the best — a champion both on and off the field.
Speaker: Ross Bernstein, Inspirational Business Speaker & Best-Selling Sports Author
The best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, Ross Bernstein is an award-winning
peak performance business speaker who’s keynoted conferences on four continents for
audiences as small as 10 and as large as 10,000. Ross and his books have been featured on
thousands of television and radio programs over the years including CNN, ESPN, Bloomberg,
Fox News, and “CBS This Morning,” as well as in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today. He’s
spent the better part of the past 20 years studying the DNA of championship teams and his program, “The
Champion’s Code: Life Lessons of Ethics and Accountability from the Sports World to the Business World,” not
only illustrates what it takes to become the best of the best, it also explores the fine line between cheating and
gamesmanship in sports as it relates to values and integrity in the workplace. As a working member of the
media in his home state of Minnesota, Ross has a unique behind the scenes access to all of the local sports
franchises in the area, including the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, Wild and Gophers. As such, he spends lots
of his time in dugouts, club houses, locker rooms, and press boxes — and it’s here where Ross has met and
interviewed thousands of professional athletes over the years. Ross and his wife Sara have a 12-year-olddaughter and presently reside in Apple Valley, MN.
9:00-12:00 pm: PHATS Education: Dry Needling for Pain Management and Athletic Performance
Enhancement
Session Overview: This short introductory course is designed to provide clinicians an understanding of the
therapeutic effects of dry needling (DN) related to pain, inflammation and connective tissue dysfunction. There
is currently controversy in the literature regarding the genesis and diagnosis of myofascial trigger points as
well as the treatment of myofascial pain using DN. There is a growing body of literature demonstrating the
pain management benefits of DN, but it is the physiological mechanisms that have been brought into question.
We will discuss this current debate. DN provides other clinical benefits beyond pain management. Currently
we have a physiological basis for using dry needling in the context of injury prevention, and maximizing
athletic performance, however, this topic has not been studied extensively in the literature. We will discuss the
influence of DN on muscle performance and the neuromuscular control of movement. Video demonstrations
of dry needling techniques will be used to enhance participant’s visibility of the techniques and improve their
clinical understanding of dry needling.

This advanced lecture and lab course explores the biomechanics of contralateral and
ipsilateral myokinematic lumbo-pelvic-femoral dysfunction. Treatment emphasizes the
restoration of pelvic-femoral alignment and recruitment of specific rotational muscles
to reduce synergistic predictable patterns of pathomechanic asymmetry. Emphasis will
be placed on restoration, recruitment and retraining activities using internal and external rotators of the femur, pelvis and lower trunk. Guidance will be provided on how
to inhibit overactive musculature. This will enable the course participant to restore
normal resting muscle position. Participants will be able to immediately apply PRI clinical assessment and management skills when treating diagnoses such as “piriformis
syndrome”, right ilio-sacral joint dysfunction, and low back strain.
