WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MOONACHIE...
ALERT!! Traffic Advisories
Improving the infrastructure in Moonachie is a priority this
summer – lots of construction on our roadways.
Moonachie Ave is going to be under constant upheaval as
PSEG completes the link for a new electrical transmission
line. Construction will continue through November.
PSEG is also going to replace the gas lines in some of the
residential neighborhoods to make the lines resilient. Work
will start sometime in July. Since the gas lines are in the
roadways, there will be some minor inconveniences. You
will be individually notified when work starts in your neighborhood.
Industrial Ave will be paved in mid-July (let’s all hear that
sigh of relief!). Berger Street and Anderson Ave from the
Wood-Ridge train tracks to Concord Street will be paved at
the same time.
Patching of pot-holes continues once a week through July.
Storm drain repairs and rebuilds are also continuing.
Please be aware of the work crews and drive carefully.
Children are out for the summer so please watch for them
as we navigate around the roads.
Change in Garbage Collection
Twice a week garbage collection ends in September. Trash
will be collected on Sept 2, 8, 15, 22 and 29. There will
be no Thursday collection from September through
Memorial Day 2015.
Garbage Gossip
Here are some tips for garbage collection in Moonachie:
1. Garbage must be in cans or bags.
2. Garbage will be collected on Mondays from
September until Memorial Day. If a holiday falls on
a Monday, garbage will be collected on Tuesday.
3. If you put out metal, or electronics, yard waste or
recycling with your garbage, it will not be collected.
4. If you have bulky waste, put it out on Sunday night.
Wood must be cut and bundled, and nails have to
be bent down or removed.
5. No container (bag or barrel) can weigh more than
35 pounds.
6. If you have paint (latex only) you need to add sand
or kitty litter to absorb the liquid before you put it to
the curb.
7. If you have metal or electronics, put it out on
Wednesday night. The DPW will pick it up
on Thursday.
8. Yard waste gets collected on Wednesdays.
No plastic bags are allowed. Limbs must be cut into
4 foot lengths and tied.
9. If the roads are impassable due to weather
conditions, garbage will not be collected on the
regularly scheduled day. It will be picked up on the
next accessible day.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR COMMUNITY

calling or finding out from the town grapevine about what is

Liz Bassani, Tax Collector, retires.
Elizabeth Bassani, a 20 year borough employee, and
Tax Collector for the last 9 years, retired on June
30th. Liz is going to be sorely missed – a long time
borough resident, Liz knew everyone and often had
residents in her office asking for help, which she
cheerfully gave. Liz has been married to Mario
Bassani for the past 50 years. Mario served the
Borough as a Zoning Board member and a Board of
Education member. Liz is going to travel, spend
time with her family, and get ready for the newest
addition to her family, a great grandchild expected
in January. We wish her all the best!
Pat Beideman, Court Administrator, retires.
Pat Beideman, the longest serving Municipal Court
Administrator in the State of New Jersey, also retired
on June 30th. Pat has been our Court Administrator
for 41 years and has served with 3 judges.
She worked part time for the Moonachie Board of
Education before she started at the Borough.
Her son, Russell, served as a Police Officer for the
Borough. Pat is looking forward to travelling
after she retires. Best wishes for a long and happy
retirement.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MOONACHIE...
RESIDENT’S BEWARE
SCAM ALERTS
With the summer around the corner, it’s SCAM
TIME. With the warm weather here, so are the
contractors. The contractors will repair anything
and everything. Most contractors are licensed and
do a fine job. But there are a few that will take your
money and never start or complete the job. Here are
ways to avoid contractor scams.
Contractor Scam
1.
Get four references. Contractors will come
prepared with three references. Ask for four. And
for the fourth one, ask that they provide someone
who had to call them back to fix a problem with the
work. If the contractor fixed the problem to the
homeowner’s satisfaction, then you have a good
idea of what kind of work the contractor does and
whether the homeowner is satisfied.
2. Take precautions if you live alone. If you live
alone, have a family member or friend at your
house when you meet with potential contractors.
Before the contractor arrives, secure all of your
valuables, including paperwork that could facilitate
identity theft. After the contractor leaves, check all
of your doors and window to make sure they’re still
locked so no one can return later and gain easy
access to your house.
3. Check with the Better Business Bureau.
4. Verify contractors’ licenses.
5. Make sure the contractor is insured
6. Check with your local building department
about permits and inspections that may be needed
for the project.
7. Need supplies? In an ideal situation, the
contractor should buy the supplies. But if you do
purchase them, DON’T give the contractor your
money. Instead, meet the contractor at the supply
store and make the purchase, then have it delivered
to the site the day the materials are needed.
8. Proofread your contract and NEVER sign a
contract without all of the blanks filled in.
Other Scam’s to be aware of:
1. The Grandparent Scam. A grandparent
receives a frantic call from someone they believe to
be their grandchild. The supposed grandchild
sounds distressed and may be calling from a noisy
location. The supposed grandchild claims to be
involved in some type of trouble, such as being
arrested or in a car accident or needing emergency
car repairs, The scammer typically asks for several
thousand dollars, and may even call back again
several hours or days later asking for more money.
He or she may claim embarrassment about the
alleged trouble and ask the grandparent to keep it
a secret.
A variation of the scam may involve two scammers,
the first scammer calls and posing as some law
enforcement officer, then gets on the phone with the
grandparent and explains what fines need to be
paid. NO LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WILL
TAKE BAIL OVER THE TELEPHONE.

MOONACHIE TRAVEL SOCCER
The newly formed Moonachie U8 Travel Soccer completed its first season, a 10 week series with
2 games weekly. The teams played against teams from Garfield, Passaic, Maplewood and Newark as well as
private leagues. They gave it their all. With each game, it was a pleasure to watch the children improve as
they continued to grow as a team. The team finished with an undefeated season! Congratulations to
Moonachie’s Mario Camacho, Jordan Cano, Dean Cardia, Drew Cardia, Andrew Carrion, Brian Harasak,
Zachary Macalintal, Dominic Monti, David Sarmiento and Wood Ridge’s Jake Burke and Mackenzie Burke
for a season well played. Thank you to Head Coach Ed Monti and Assistant Coaches Jorge Albiero and
Mario Camacho and to the parents for the commitment and dedication to the team. Thank you also to
Mr. Facendola and the mayor and council for your support of the new program!
BOROUGH EASTER
EGG HUNT 2014
This year’s Easter Egg Hunt was a
great success. It was held on
Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11am. The
Borough
Easter
Egg
Hunt
was organized by Moonachie’s
Celebrations Committee, headed by
Kathy Kinsella and Lucille Millar.
The student’s enjoyed searching for
eggs and then trading them in for
great prizes. The Easter Bunny was
there for fantastic picture-taking
opportunities. Thank you to the
Ladies Auxiliary and to all who
helped make this year a success.
