VERY IMPORTANT – CHANGES IN GARBAGE COLLECTION
Twice a week garbage collection ends in September.
There will be no Thursday collection from September
through Memorial Day 2015.
GARBAGE GOSSIP
Here are some tips for garbage collection in Moonachie:
1.
Garbage must be in cans or bags.
2.
Garbage will be collected on Mondays from
September until Memorial Day. If a holiday
falls on a Monday, garbage will be collected
on Tuesday.
3.
If you put out metal, or electronics, yard waste or recycling with your garbage, it will
not be collected.
4.
If you have bulky waste, put it out on Sunday night. Wood must be cut and bundled,
and nails have to be bent down or removed.
5.
No container (bag or barrel) can weigh more than 35 pounds.
6.
If you have paint (latex only) you need to add sand or kitty litter to absorb the liquid
before you put it to the curb.
7.
If you have metal or electronics, put it out on Wednesday night. The DPW will pick it
up on Thursday.
8.
Yard waste gets collected on Wednesdays. No plastic bags are allowed. Limbs must
be cut into 4 foot lengths and tied.
9.
If the roads are impassable due to weather conditions, garbage will not be collected
on the regularly scheduled day. It will be picked up on the next accessible day.
IMPORTANT CHANGES TO LEAF COLLECTION IN THE
BOROUGH OF MOONACHIE
Free leaf bags to all Moonachie Residents
NO MORE LOOSE LEAVES COLLECTED
At the start of the 2014 Leaf Season, FREE leaf bags will be given out to the residents of Moonachie who have leaves
to be collected. The DPW will no longer pick up piles of raked or loose leaves.
Moonachie residents will be able to put their leaves out on Tuesday evenings in paper bags or in garbage cans.
They will be picked up by Get A Can on Wednesdays until November 26th. After November 26th, the DPW
will pick up the leaves ONLY if they are in the PAPER LEAF COLLECTION BAGS. BARRELS, PLASTIC
CONTAINERS OR PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
No loose leaves will be picked up this leaf season. Every household must bag their leaves, or put them into garbage
cans for collection. Leaves are not to be raked or blown into the street. No leaves will be picked up in plastic bags.
Residents can pick up free leaf bags at Borough Hall. Residents will be required to sign a log and provide proof of
residency to get free bags. No resident can pick up more than 15 bags at a time. Residents will not be permitted to
get free bags for other people, but will be able to buy bags for other people.
Twigs and branches must be bundled into 4 foot lengths and tied and kept separate from leaves. The DPW will pick
up the bundles on Wednesdays as well.
Free bags will not be given out past December 12th.
THE MOONACHIE MESSENGER
CARBON MONOXIDE
POISONING
As the seasons change and the weather becomes colder,
extreme caution is urged when using sources of carbon
monoxide such as unvented kerosene and gas space
heaters, gas water heaters, wood stoves, leaking
chimneys and furnaces, fireplaces and gas stoves. Other
common sources are automobile exhaust from attached
or unvented garages and “patched” vent pipes using
tape, gum or other substances.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that
can deprive the body of oxygen. The New Jersey Poison
Information and Education System (NJPIES) encourages
everyone to install carbon monoxide detectors in his
or her home. Exposure can produce headaches,
sleepiness, fatigue, confusion and irritability at low levels.
At higher levels, it can result in nausea, vomiting,
irregular heartbeat, impaired vision and coordination,
and death.

Live Saving Tips
Open flues when fireplaces are in use
Chimneys should be inspected & cleaned annually
DO NOT idle the car inside the garage
Use the correct fuel in kerosene heaters
NEVER use charcoal indoors or in areas with
inadequate ventilation
Have a trained professional inspect, clean and
tune-up central heating systems like the furnace
every year.
Gas appliances must have adequate ventilation
so that carbon monoxide will not accumulate
NO PARKING ON SNOW
COVERED STREETS
This is the time of year that our police department is out
writing tickets for cars left in the street overnight when it
snows. Don’t be one who forgets to put the car in the
driveway when a snowstorm is in the forecast. We must
be able to get the snowplows close to the curb to avoid
the problems of snow piled in the street where a car was
parked. Moonachie’s DPW takes pride in the job they do
when the need arises and they cannot do a good job if
there are cars parked in the roadway.
To avoid a ticket:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Listen to the weather before going to bed.
If snow is forecasted, find off-street parking.
If off-street parking is not an option, call the
police for advice.
Alternate parking
locations on Borough property may be
utilized with police permission until the
street is cleared of snow.
Cars reported as disabled will be towed
during a snow emergency.
The parking restriction remains in effect until after the
snowfall has ceased until the roads have been plowed
sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not
interfere with the normal flow of traffic.

On Thursday, September 11, 2014 the Borough of
Moonachie held a September 11th Memorial
Service in memory of the victims who lost their lives
in the terrorist attacks against the United States of
America. A large crowd of residents gathered
together as Mayor Dennis Vaccaro led the
ceremony with a welcome address. A heartfelt
invocation and benediction was given by
Pastor Kevin Carter of St. Margaret’s of Cortona
Church, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by
Ethan Ciannamea, and Ed Nepil, Jr. singing the
National Anthem. Special guest speakers included
Councilwoman Ms. Kathy Kinsella and Moonachie
Superintendent / Principal Mr. Frank Scarafile.
The Moonachie Fire Department and Moonachie
First Aid Squad representatives placed a wreath at
the 9/11 Monument to honor the victims of 9/11 as
well as those who are currently serving in our
armed forces. Franchesca Macalintal stunned the
crowd with her beautiful rendition of “Hero” and
“God Bless America”. It was a beautiful ceremony
remembering a tragic event that has forever
changed our lives.

ROBERT L. CRAIG
Robert L. Craig School Art Department Hosted M.C. Escher Traveling Exhibit
Students Were Fascinated by Tessellation Master M.C. Escher!
(Moonachie, New Jersey): The Robert L. Craig School displayed a Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit
featuring the fascinating paintings and drawings of the master of artistic illusion, M.C. Escher. The students
and staff enjoyed the giant reproductions during the weeks of the 8th and the 15th. The exhibit celebrates
fine art and the lifelike drawing that you can’t tear your eyes from, including the famous Drawing Hands in
which the two hands seem to draw each other!
The rental of this awesome and engaging traveling exhibit was arranged by the school’s art teacher
(Ms. Ten Hoeve) and made possible by the Board of Education and school administration. Their generous
support of the Art program and its endeavors is unfailing and has allowed the students of R.L.C. to
experience these wondrous traveling art exhibits several years in a row. It has become an annual tradition
that is anticipated by students and staff alike, each year welcoming a new artist into our school.
In Art class, students study the work and life of the artist and its implications on life today. Special optical
illusion experiments were enjoyed and discussed. Students discussed the mathematical and architectural
implications of the work, allowing cross-curricular connections to be made. It was a special and memorable
way to begin the school year with greatness in mind.
Overall, it was an enlightening experience for all involved and the Robert L.Craig School was extremely
excited to be hosting this show.
A Special Thanks!!
The Staff of the Moonachie Summer Recreation 2014
