Chinese Handset
Becomes a National Gift
ZTE Grand SII was included on the list of
the national gifts presented by Chinese
President Xi Jinping to the nation of
Tajikistan during his state visit in September.
China’s previous national gifts were
mainly traditional artworks and items
made from silk and porcelain. Chinese
handsets appear to have a stronger
sense of the times and have opened a
new window for knowing of China’s new
strength.
ZTE Grand SII presented as a “national
gift” this time is a 4G handset released
by ZTE this April. Grand SII is one of the
world’s securest handsets and can provide different security solutions based
on demands of different users.
In recent years, China has made
astounding progress in science and technology, thus gradually changing from
a “world plant” into a “smart maker”.
Particularly, China’s smartphone industry
has drawn close attention from Chinese
and foreign consumers by low prices and

ZTE Hosts Former US President
Jimmy Carter in China
Former US president Jimmy Carter toured ZTE’s research and development center in Shanghai on
September 9. Shi Lirong, president of ZTE, and Cheng Lixin, chairman of ZTE USA, briefed President
Carter on the latest business updates in the US market, where ZTE is consolidating its position as
one of the top providers of smartphones.
“It was impressive to learn of the great technological advancements that ZTE has developed,”
President Carter said. “During this 35th anniversary of the normalisation of US-China relations, it is
good to know of the partnerships between ZTE and American telecommunications companies.”
In 1979, President Carter and Premier Deng Xiaoping signed the US-China Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology, paving the way to 35 years of deepening collaboration in a diverse
range of sectors.
ZTE Launches Blade G Lux in Spain
Blade G Lux was launched on September 1 at a Madrid press conference jointly held by ZTE,
the government of Madrid, and the Taxi Association of Madrid. Advertisements for Blade G
Lux were shown on more than 250 taxies.
Blade G Lux has a 4.5-inch FWVGA display with an 854 x 480 pixel resolution. It has a
dual-core MediaTek MT6572 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, a 5-megapixel
rear-facing camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and an 1850
mAh battery.
The event was well received by taxi drivers and attracted a lot of media coverage. Launches
such as this greatly increase awareness of the ZTE brand.
ZTE Launches 5.7-inch ZMAX on T-Mobile
On September 16, ZTE USA introduced its latest phablet
ZMAX at its launch event in New York City and announced the phone’s exclusive availability with T-Mobile
beginning September 24.
This LTE smartphone with a 5.7-inch HD screen heightens performance and class in the mid-range market. It
ships with a nearly-stock version of the Android KitKat
4.4 OS. Behind its screen is a Qualcomm quad-core

processor, Dolby Digital sound and 16 GB of storage
that is expandable to 32 GB with a micro SD card. The
phone’s 3400 mAh battery is one of the highest-capacity
batteries on the market.
ZMAX is the latest example of ZTE designing devices
with the user in mind. It has more battery life, larger
screen and more style, but it costs only a third of mainstream brand products.

smartphones at IFA 2014 in Berlin.
The optically identical and extra-thin
smartphones Blade Vec 3G and
Blade Vec 4G impress with their
elegant and modern design as well
as the 5-inch HD display which is
perfect for gaming, taking photos
and videos or just browsing the web.
The ZTE Kis 3 Max smartphone is
the latest device to come from the
ZTE Kis series that offers power at a
highly affordable price.
“The smartphones Blade Vec 3G, 4G
and Kis 3 Max are the newest members of our popular Blade and Kis
families. Our goal was to combine
the latest technology in a trendy and
appealing design,” says Qin Xiaojun,
CEO at ZTE Mobile Devices Germany.
“The Blade and Kis series are already
known for their first-class quality at
an attractive price point. We follow
this tradition with these new and
powerful smartphones.”

On September 18, ZTE was recognized as one of “China’s Top 10 Competitive Brands” by the International Data Group (IDG). IDG also named ZTE
“The Most Innovatively Competitive Brand” of the top 10, recognizing the
company’s rapid worldwide growth and commitment to innovation and
R&D, at the 2014 FutureM Forum.
“ZTE understands that the value of its brand lies in marketing not just to
today’s consumers, but also those of the future,” said Jennifer Xu, VP, IDG
Asia. “That’s what makes it one of the global leaders in the age of the
mobile internet.”
ZTE attributes its recognition to its concentration on bringing more value
to users through the “Smart 2.0” era by producing devices that are seamlessly integrated with personalized applications and services, allowing
users to take advantage of faster mobile connections and have better
experiences.
ZTE Forms Smart Voice Alliance
On September 24, ZTE established the “Smart Voice Alliance”, which is the world’s first voice controlled
technology alliance for mobiles at PT/EXPO COMM CHINA 2014. This partnership includes other leading
enterprises in the industry such as Audience, Nuance, AutoNavi, Baidu, and the Chinese Academy of
Sciences. Meanwhile, the
“5A” protocol has been
officially launched as the
first industry-wide code of
practice.
This strategic alliance’s
main purpose is to integrate all of the existing
voice technologies to establish a standard platform
that will enable a stable
and fast paced growth for
the whole industry and
permit a gradual migration
from touch screens to voice
controlled devices.

standard protocol “5A” is

Three ZTE Products Named Finalists for 2014 CTIA Awards
CTIA, the Wireless Association, has selected
three ZTE products as finalists in the 2014 CTIA
Awards “Hot for the Holidays” category: the
recently launched nubia 5S mini smartphone,
the ZTE Projector Hotspot (available through
Sprint as the Sprint LivePro), and the AT&T Home
Base by ZTE.
“CTIA’s selection of our products is an acknowl-
edgement of the time and effort we put into the
research and development of ZTE devices,” said
Cheng Lixin, chairman and CEO of ZTE USA. “We
listen to what carriers and customers want, and
create devices with them in mind.”
The “Hot for Holidays” awards identify and celebrate the hottest mobile consumer electronics
products and applications for the holiday season.

Vodafone Egypt:
A Leader in Connectivity

Vodafone Egypt was established in 1998 and has become the largest mobile operator in Egypt in terms of revenue and subscribers.
How did it achieve this success? How does it view the future of
mobile broadband? What is next on its agenda? Mobile World
interviewed Reham Abdallah, senior team leader of supply chain
and after-sales at Vodafone Egypt, and Amir Zeyady, senior handset manager at Vodafone Egypt.
1. What is the current situation in the Egyptian mobile
market?
AZ: In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in
the smartphone market in Egypt. People are definitely getting
used to smartphone lifestyles.
2. How did Vodafone manage to become the largest
mobile phone operator in Egypt?
RA: Vodafone is recognized as the best mobile operator in Egypt,
covering 99% of the population. We deploy the latest mobile
broadband technology and deliver data at up to 43.2 Mbps. Vodafone Egypt has also demonstrated its readiness to roll out 4G.
Vodafone in Egypt is run by Egyptians, for Egyptians. We are a
significant investor in the country; we are the country’s largest
taxpayer; and we provide direct and indirect employment for
more than 30,000 Egyptians.
Vodafone is a role model for corporate responsibility in Egypt.
Vodafone’s social investments have been channeled into a
number of developmental sectors, including health and education
for children, community development, mobile technology for development and access to communications. Our development and
community projects have already helped more than two million
Egyptians. In February 2011, we announced a new initiative, run
by the Vodafone Egypt Foundation, to help 17 million Egyptians
eradicating illiteracy. The “Knowledge is Power” initiative is one of
the largest of its kind in the world. It brings together a wide variety
of Egyptian NGOs and involves the work of 120,000 volunteers.
The aim is helping eradicating illiteracy in Egypt.
3. What are the challenges of operating in Egypt?
RA: The challenges come from the current political and economic
scene, which I’m sure everyone’s aware of. We have been hit by

power cuts and fluctuating prices of fuel and electricity.
4. ZTE began cooperating with Vodafone Egypt on data
cards in 2013. How did you choose your supplier then?
What attracted you to ZTE?
RA: I think we made an excellent decision. We choose suppliers
that offered the best price and quality. From the start, ZTE has
made excellent offers.

5. What’s your expectation for the future co operations?
AZ: Together, we will focus on unconventional products, but
we cannot announce them now.
6. What are the trends in mobile broadband?
RA: We have witnessed increasing demand for MBB devices
and solutions, especially Wi-Fi devices. These have been taking
market share from USBs. We strongly believe there is huge
market potential in light of rising use of tablets and smartphones.

7. What are smartphones going to be in the future?
AZ: Smartphones are going to be everything. Very soon, it will
be the only device you need.
8. What is the next on your agenda?
RA: Our plan is to introduce innovative products into the
market. These products will make Vodafone the
leader in connectivity. At the same time,
we’ll explore possibilities related to home
solutions.

5. Split-screen mode
Z7 mini also has a unique one-keyto-split-screen feature that takes
full advantage of the HD screen.
You can gently slide upwards on
the screen to enable the splitscreen mode. In this mode, two
screens operate as two separate
handsets, displaying the separate
desktops or running different apps
simultaneously. This mode is a
system-level application and requires no special adaptation, thus
compatible with almost all apps.
The nubia Z7 series is perfect for photo shooting, and
Z7 mini is no exception. The professional and extensive
settings and functions allow shutterbugs to create
what they want just as they do with their DSLRs. The
13-megapixel camera focuses rapidly and accurately
even at night. As shown in the samples shot by Z7 mini
at night, the camera has a high signal-to-noise ratio

The Design of
Child-Friendly Cellphones

Nowadays, digital products are an indispensable part of daily life. The market
is filled with mobile phones, tablets and smart TVs. As the market becomes
more segmented, mobile phones for children have emerged. Compared with
conventional mobile phones, mobile phones for children often have cartoon
designs and customized functions.
In the Japanese market, smartphones and other mobile
phones for kids have been popular. According to a recent
survey on children’s cellphone use in Japan, almost twothirds of Japanese primary school students use phones.
Among ZTE’s wide portfolio of mobile phones, the products for kids are very important. ZTE and major telecommunications corporation SoftBank cooperated on the
production of three generations of Mimamori Phone. This
series of phones is well recognized in the Japanese market
and has won multiple awards.
Designers need to give kids phones more consideration
because kids are not capable of coping with everything
on their own. They do not have strong awareness of
safety, and their parents cannot be with them all the time.

Handy Shortcuts on Lock Screen
The lock screen enables quick access to practical functions such as
flashlight and SOS that the seniors will
find very handy. In case of emergency, the SOS key allows calls to be
automatically made, messages sent
with user location included to the
preset contacts so that help will arrive
immediately.

important asset in our daily
lives. However, the smartphone
market is changing rapidly. Some
digital fans will change their mobile
phones in less than a year or even
three to four months. Avoiding
data loss is an important security
problem. To solve this, ZTE has
launched its own data backup app
called Backup & Restore.
Easy-to-Use Interface
After the app is installed (preinstalled on ZTE mobile phones),
a backup directory is created
automatically on the SD card to
store backup files. The app installer
is also created automatically in this
directory. If you log in to the app, a
concise page is displayed. You will
find that ZTE’s Backup & Restore
app provides both local and cloud
backup data.

Augmented Reality (AR) has
been around for a long time. AR
superimposes virtual information
on the real world. A typical
example is Google Glass, which

What is AR made for?
Through years of development,
AR technologies have been widely
researched and applied by many
manufacturers. For example, Audi
has developed an augmented
reality app that helps you learn
more about your vehicle. It is only
a basic app but demonstrates the
charm of AR technology.
What bottlenecks does it
have?
AR has bottlenecks in terms
of display technologies and
computation capability. In
ideal cases, AR enables you to
capture real-time scene and
overlays computer-generated
data over it. Google Glass and
similar eyeshade-like projectors
are good; however, display
technologies are imperfect. Also,
the computational capabilities of
a portable device are poor. AR has
to be assisted by cloud computing
technologies, and this greatly
reduces the real-time capabilities
of AR. Therefore, AR is still a long
way from being fully mature.

Solar Charger
In the sun, a solar charger can convert
light into electricity and store it in a builtin battery through control circuit or
directly charges your cell phone or other
devices. This process depends on solar
luminosity. If there is no sunlight, a solar
charger can convert AC power into DC
power and store it in a built-in battery.
There are three types of solar chargers.
The first type has a built-in energyefficient LED that can last for 3 to 30
hours if used only for LED lighting,
depending on the battery capacity. The
second type has no additional functions
but can store a larger amount of energy,
which makes it a suitable choice for
external power supplies. The third type
can be regulated at 5 V or 9 V output.

Eco-Charge is a concept charger based on
thermoelectricity. It can charge your phone by
recycling heat produced by an oven, a stove, or any
other heat producing object. It has a flexible magnetic
surface, and you can use it on any object with a
metallic surface.
A Wi-Fi charger can charge your cell phone wherever
there is Wi-Fi. By making use of electromagnetic
induction, a Wi-Fi charger converts the energy of Wi-Fi
signal into electricity and stores it in the internal battery.
Although a Wi-Fi signal normally emits weak radiation
energy, the charger’s high conversion efficiency still
makes it work. The Wi-Fi powered RCA Airnergy charger
can charge a BlackBerry from 30% power to full power
in about 90 minutes.
In addition to these household devices, even your
own body can become a charger with thermoelectric
technology. The Pocket Power developed by Vodafone
is basically a small pocket sewn into your pants or
sleeping bag. Heat from the body is absorbed by
thermoelectric material and converted into voltage.
Fruit Battery
Wind-Powered Charger
Another type of environmentally friendly
charger is a wind-powered charger. It converts
kinetic energy into electricity, the same way
that hand crank chargers work. The difference
is that it captures the kinetic energy in wind
instead, like a wind turbine. When you have no
access to a traditional outlet or venture away
from civilization, like on a field trip in a windy
farm, a wind-powered charger will provide the
power you need. The telecom giant Orange
has already developed such a product for road
warriors. It is made to fit in a backpack and
then mounted on top of a tent to capture wind.
It charges a battery located in the detachable
control box, and then the battery charges your
cell phone with a 0.5 W output.
In situations where neither traditional
USB chargers nor the above high-tech
gadgets are available, you can still
charge your phone as long as you can
find some acidic fruits and things made
out of copper and zinc, such as coins,
nails or electrical wires. When you push
the copper and zinc objects into the
fruit, the electrons from the zinc will
flow around the circuit to the copper
electrode because zinc is more reactive
than copper, creating an electrical
current. The acid in fruit juice provides
the acid much like the acid in a battery.
Citrus fruits, apples, pears and potatoes
all work well. However, the voltage thus
generated is small, so it will take some
time and serious patience to fully charge
your phone.

family. The 5-inch handset runs Android 4.4 and features a
1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 2300 mAh battery. It has
already been launched in Spain, Turkey, France, Belgium,
Norway, and Sweden.

On June 24, ZTE and Orange Spain jointly released Blade Vec 4G (marketed as Orange RONO)
in Madrid. Juan Luis Velazquez, devices strategy
director for Orange Spain, and Kan Yulun, CEO
of EMEA and LATAM, ZTE Mobile Devices, were
present at the conference. More than 100 major
media outlets were also present. Blade Vec 4G
was announced as Orange Spain’s key 4G terminal in 2014.
In July, Blade Vec 4G was also launched by
Yoigo, another Spanish mobile operator. ZTE

ran promotions in Spain, focusing on the main
selling points of the phone. A locally produced
promotional video received over 100,000 clicks
on YouTube within two months.
ZTE helped train Yoigo’s distributors in the use of
the phone and introduced Blade Vec 4G in every
possible sphere.
At the end of July, ZTE cooperated with Dolby
Labs and invited its clients to enjoy movies in the
Cinesa movie theater, which uses Dolby Stereo.

The event was very successful.
In August, Blade Vec 4G and two other terminals from
ZTE were selected for use in the Spanish language film
Ma Ma. The short film was directed by the famous
Spanish film director Julio Medem and starred Spanish
film star Penelope Cruz.

Blade Vec 4G keeps heating up in Spain and is sure to
become a hit product in the Spanish market this year.

in June. With its edgy look, complete functions and
