Swadling Clear Cross Country Champions
Once again, the PDHPE Faculty organised a tremendous day where students and staff were able to test
their physical fitness and endurance. We saw some amazing personal bests and some great peer
support happening.
Congratulations to the students of Swadling House for their success in taking out the Campus Cross
Country Championships. Congratulations to the age champions and a huge thank you to all competitors
for a great day.
Take 3 Initiative
Every day we enjoy the beauty of our local area and beaches. Every day we enjoy the fact that we have
access to clean drinking water. Our campus is well aware of the problems that litter, in particular
plastics, cause to our waterways and general environment.
This campus has a longstanding partnership with the Take 3 organisation. Take 3 has a simple
message - pick up three pieces of rubbish whenever you are out to make our environment and
waterways healthy and clean.
This week we have had a large group of students actively involved in taking the Take 3 message to our
local community. Fee free to google Take 3 to find out more about this great organisation.

Right now in this country our elected politicians
are deciding how schools will get their funding in
the future. Education is the key to making sure
communities are safe, jobs are available and all
people have the chance to contribute in a worthwhile way. In short, education makes us who and
what we are.
Our latest venture opened with a fanfare this
week. Café Platinum has arrived! This
hospitality event will operate once a week
under the leadership of Ms Fincke and her
team of talented caterers. We look forward to
sharing photos of their achievements in future
newsletters.
This country needs to increase the amount of
funding going into our great public schools. This
funding is not for wages. It is for programs and
resources to support our great children and make
sure that they have the best opportunity to compete
in this global world.
Our children cannot wait any longer!

Attendance and Lateness
Thank you to all parents for making sure that their
children arrive at the campus by 7.50am - ready
for our 8.00am start. Punctuality is an important
employability skill that is learned and practised
daily in every school.
Punctuality is one of the criteria used to decide
participation in representative opportunities and
excursions.
TERM 2 RESUMES ON
WEDNESDAY 1ST MAY, 2013
Tumbi Talks - Term 1 - Week 10
ALEXANDER THE GREAT EXCURSION
On Tuesday 26th March 100 Year 7 students went to the Australian Museum and then to Darling
Harbour for the day. As the Harbour Bridge came in sight, I hear squeals of excitement “look it’s
the Harbour Bridge!”, “we’re driving over the Bridge!”. I knew this was going to be a good day.
True to Tumbi form, our Year 7 students were excellent! They conducted themselves with the
utmost respect for where they were, considering this was an exhibition open to the general public
at the same time. I even had an elderly member of the public commend our students for their behaviour whilst they were there. It was lovely to see some of the expressions on their faces as they
stood before artefacts that were actually up to 5000 years old - a concept that some people
would only have been able to imagine, let along experience.
At Darling Harbour, some of the students even engaged in a bit of maths whilst they were there a very expensive lesson on just how many lollies actually made up 100g - surprisingly not as
many as they thought!
Overall, it was a very successful day! I would like to thank Mr Bennet, Mr McGuire, Mr Rowlison and Ms Barnett for there
support on the day.
Mrs Preston

Tumbi Talks - Term 1 - Week 10
These student’s are showing us all how it is done! Congratulations and well done!
On Wednesday 27th March, we took 38 students by train to Sydney to see The Addams Family Broadway Musical at the
Capitol Theatre. It was such an awesome day and the students definitely did Tumbi proud. Their uniforms looked amazing
and their behaviour was exceptional. If we asked them to meet us at a certain time they were all there waiting.
The show was spectacular and if you have a chance to see it, I highly recommend it. The students were in awe of the
theatre, characters, costumes and sets. Most students had never seen a live production before and it was an experience
they won’t forget anytime soon.
I came to school the next day and felt great about our excursion and when I received an email from the front office about a
call from a passenger that was on the train with us yesterday, I was positively beaming!
This is what she said - “They were the best group of students that she has ever seen traveling on public transport, that she
thought they were from a private school. They were delightful to travel with, even giving up their seats for the elderly”.
Congratulations to our great students for displaying what “Standing Tall” is all about!

On Friday 22nd March our students ran their annual X-country race. The weather turned it on, the students ran well, the spectating students
were well behaved and we had a great turn out of parents to proudly watch their children compete.
Thankyou also to the staff who came down for the fun run at lunchtime.

Tumbi Talks - Term 1 - Week 10
SHOWTIME!!
On Tuesday 26th March the TAS faculty had the pleasure of taking our Year 9 and 10 students to the Annual Sydney
Royal Easter Show. The day consisted of watching the almighty wood chopping, viewing a solar power display, not to
mention the vast array of textiles. The wood and leather displays were fantastic as well as the creative cakes, with our
very own Brittney Forsythe’s grandmother taking out first prize.
Everyone enjoyed the many food samples within the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome with students; Jayden and Jai
Hennessey and Liam Dowling taking on the 15/10 chilli challenge and coming out survivors with a lanyard to prove it.
Good work boys! On a sad note, Mr Donnelly and Mr Wooden couldn’t find anything to ease the pain of the 10/10 chilli
fast enough. The sight was eye watering.
What show doesn’t end with as many show bags that you can carry? I’m certain our students contributed to the economy in a short amount of time. A great day was had by all with the students proving to be nothing short of fantastic. The
students should be proud of how they represented themselves and our school. Well done!
Miss Munro, Mr Donnelly, Mr Wooden and Mrs Armstrong
Tumbi Umbi Campus will be conducting a whole school
ANZAC DAY REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY on Thursday
11th April, 2013. Our school leaders and representative
council will be running the ceremony for all staff and
students. On this day, above all days, we remember
these Australian men and women who died or suffered
in the great tragedy of war.

AVID REPORT
A busy Term 1 is almost over with AVID students about to embark on their biggest task for the term. Congratulations to
all students on their engagement and involvement in the AVID program this term, we look forward to bigger and greater
opportunities for the students as the year progresses. Here is a brief outline of what our students have been doing this
term..
Take 3 Program and Clean Up Day : As part of the AVID program, students have the opportunity to get involved in
community events and activities. In particular, this term, students have worked closely with the Take 3 Team as
they prepare for a big clean up day and plastics audit at The North Entrance Beach. Following a brilliant
presentation from Tim Silverwood and Mandy Marechal, students have been planning and preparing for the Clean
up day. A huge thankyou to Mandy Marechal who has planned and organised the day out. Students will have the
wonderful opportunity of being involved in a large scale clean up, supported by Catchment Management Authority,
National Parks and Wildlife Services, Take 3 and Wyong Council. Stay tuned for photos!
Parent Teacher Interviews: As part of the AVID program, parents and students are required to meet with their AVID
teachers throughout the year, to monitor progress and share information. The first parent teacher interviews for this
year will take place on Monday 6th May, Tuesday 7th May, Wednesday 8th May. The meetings are in Week 2 of
Term 2. Parents will receive a letter home in the mail during the school holidays, asking for the most appropriate
time for a meeting. Please ensure your note is handed in ASAP at the start of next term. All parents and teachers
are expected to be involved in the meeting.
Year 9 AVID: Just a reminder to all Year 9 students and parents, all Year 9 students are expected to bring all of their
subject workbooks/Cornell notes to every AVID lesson. Work conducted in the AVID class is always based on the
work being completed in the core subject areas. Students must ensure they have their notes to be able to fully
participate in the lesson.
AVID Diary - Just a reminder to all parents and students in the AVID program, that all students should be using their
specially designed AVID diary in every lesson, every day. School gets busier and busier throughout the year and
the AVID diary is an excellent way of ensuring your child is organised and prepared for their learning.
Students of the fortnight – Each fortnight, students from the Year 8 and Year 9 AVID classes will be celebrated for the
excellent work they have been completing in the AVID class. Congratulations goes to the following award winners
for this term: Emily R, Joel S, Annais W, Ari R, Courtney E, Tom R, Liam M, Brody K.
Harmony Day Speakers: A huge congratulations to Micklyn S, Leo W, Huhana T, Ngamvong P, Jade O, Nancey Z
and Maxine O for the wonderful speeches and musical performances they gave at our Harmony Day Assembly.
The speeches were insightful and the way in which our students spoke demonstrated confidence. The musical
performances were well rehearsed and made for an entertaining assembly. Congratulations!
Dates to remember!
AVID Parent Teacher interviews: Monday 6th, Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 8th May.
Mary Carryer
AVID Coordinator

Tumbi Talks - Term 1 - Week 10
On Wednesday 20 March our Open Girls TLSDC water polo team played and did very well, making it
to the Grand Final.
We won our first 2 games against Lisarow and Narara Valley - we dominated. Then sadly we lost
the Grand Final 7-3 to Kincumber (who have a number of experienced players in their side). The
score does not reflect their actual standard of play. A few of our
shots unluckily hit the post and in the second half the score was
1 all.
Well done to Paige Verrancamp and Sami Judge from Tumbi.
From The Entrance Campus Tahlia Allen and Mikayla Fahey
were very strong, supported by the effort of Rosie and Zoe
Stimpson from Berkeley Vale Campus.
Ms Goodwin
Well done to all of our young men for taking part in this
program. No doubt they have all benefited from it.
Congratulations to Mr Donnelly and Mrs Dignam who
make up the careers team at our campus for such a
wonderful and positive program. Laurance Robar
could not stop raving about just how good the whole
experience was. He has every intention of completing
the course as he recognises just how valuable it will be
in gaining employment on the central coast which has
one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the
nation.

The units studied in English this term have been aimed at developing critical skills, as well as fostering engagement by
making learning activities authentic and relevant to the real world.
Year 7
Year 7 students have enjoyed success through the close study of a novel. Throughout the unit they had the opportunity to
carefully reflect on important themes from the novel, reflect on links that could be made to the wider-world and consider how
the issues relate to their own lives. A high standard of work was evidenced through the Verbal Book Reviews presented by
students in week 7. Congratulations year 7, you have made a great start to 2013.
Year 8
Students have studied a wide range of written and visual texts to explore the concept of Survival. During the unit
Miss Boulting and Mrs Bray provided students with the opportunity to view the film The Impossible which challenged
students and encouraged them to reflect on the human condition. I would like to commend year 8 for their enthusiasm and
maturity demonstrated throughout term 1.
Year 9
The Page to Screen unit of work has challenged students to think critically and develop their extended writing skills.
Through the comparison of two similar texts students have had the opportunity to embrace ways where meaning is created
across the mediums of writing and film. Furthermore, focus on persuasive writing and extended writing structures have
culminated in some impressive discussion essays.
Year 10
Freedom. Students have grappled with a unit of work focussed wholly around the concept of freedom. Throughout their
study students have enjoyed the chance to examine many texts from various sources and explore potent topics such as
racism and immigration. The persuasive speech gave students the opportunity to reflect on how they felt about important
world issues and extend their ability to persuade an audience. Many students have also published blogs that provide a
running record of reflection and evidence the depth of their learning.
The year 10 English course requires all students to complete all formal
tasks by the due date.
Mr Ryan Barron (Head Teacher English)
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is a reading challenge that I am sure many Students and Parents are familiar.
The 2013 challenge runs from March 1st 2013 to September 1st 2013 however books read after September 1st 2012 can be
included in the 2013 challenge.
20 books (15 identified as PRC books and 5 own-choice books) are required for successful completion of the challenge.
At the time of writing three Year 7 classes have gone online and entered books that they have already read. Well done to
those classes.
Through the English Faculty further classes and also the ‘Focus for Reading’ learning groups will explicitly be lead though
this process of participating in the challenge for the PRC.
No entry or joining is required to participate in the challenge. Students just use their computer/internet username and
password.
The best way to find the challenge online is to google ‘PRC’.
If your child has or has not been explicitly led through the process of participating in the PRC you are invited to engage with
them in the process yourself at home. Students may also go online at Recess in the Library to add to their online Reading
Records.
Reading for leisure has, of course, been demonstrated to lift student performance in many aspects of their schooling and
provide for increased future opportunities.
If there are any concerns or queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.

SUPPORT UNIT REPORT
Who can believe that Term 1 is almost over? It has been a busy term with our support unit students participating in a variety
of activities across a variety of subject areas. Here is just a snapshot of what we’ve been doing this term and what we’re
looking forward to in Term 2:
RDA: Riding for the Disabled is an excellent program for students in our support unit. At present, a number of students
across all 3 support unit classes attend riding lessons with support from the organising teacher, Mrs Livingston.
Students have the opportunity to enjoy a safe, healthy, stimulating and therapeutic activity with horses.
Congratulations to those students have participated in the program this term.
Art Project and Exhibition : Mrs Berthault has been working away with students in the support unit classes as they
create their amazing artworks for the new support unit classrooms. Students have researched their class names and
have produced an arrange of canvasses that reflect different aspects of the Sahara Desert, Amazon Rainforest and
Mount Everest. Mid way through Term 2, the support unit will be holding an open afternoon and a grand opening for
the art works and classroom…stayed tuned for the date!
New classrooms: Week 11 and the school holidays will see the current support unit classrooms go under a make over.
New walls will be put in, allowing our new artworks to go up. Don’t forget, all students will be out of the classrooms
in Week 11. Students are still required to attend and a number of excursions have been planned to support during
this week. Monday – School and Community Access for all support students. Tuesday – School as normal in the
library. Wednesday – Sports Gala Day at EDSACC Oval for all students. Thursday – School and Sport as normal.
Friday – Dreamtime excursion to Kariong and Somersby.
New teachers in Term 2 - Term 2 will see a change of staffing for students in the support unit. Mr Pollard will be
leaving us to take up a position in Science and Mrs Cheryl Blanke and Mrs Lana Bray will be joining us on a
part-time basis. We look forward to seeing them in Term 2.
Everest Clean Up Day – Students in the Everest support unit class will be making their mark this Friday as they join
a large group of students from Tumbi Umbi Campus in a clean up and plastic audit at The Entrance beach.
Supported by the Take 3 program, Wyong Council, National Parks and Wildlife Services and Catchment
Management Authority, students will be helping in cleaning up our beaches. We look forward to a big day out!
Aboriginal Art Exhibition – Students in the support unit have been working closely with Mrs Livingston as they create
some amazing dot paintings and Aboriginal artworks. These artworks will be displayed in the administration block
hallway as of next week. Feel free to pop by and take a look.
Sarah Morris Speaks at Harmony Day: Congratulations to Sarah Morris who faced her fears and stood up in front
of the entire school to give a speech about her family background. Both staff and students were amazed at how
confidently Sarah spoke and were intrigued by her stories about Fiji. Well done Sarah!
Cross Country: Congratulations to our support unit students who braved the heat and participated in the cross country
last week
Dates to remember!
Great Aussie Bush Camp: The support unit has been booked to go on a 3 day camp to The Great Aussie Bush Camp
at Tea Gardens. This will be in Week 6 of Term 4. 11/11 – 13/11. Thankyou for sending in your deposit and notes
ASAP

Thursday, 4th April, 2013
On Friday 8th March, our Year 8 Rugby boys played in a rugby tournament. The first game was against
Kincumber which proved to be an extremely scrappy affair. They gave away a thousand ruck penalties
and ended up physically outplaying Kincumber in a 20-0 victory.
The second game was played against Brisbane Water and proved to be the toughest match of the day. Both teams bashed
into one another with our guys extremely lucky to escape with a 5 all draw, as Brisbane Water dropped the ball over the line
a number of times. This meant that we were relegated to 2nd position in the pool and would have to make the final the hard
way, playing the top teams in the other pools. The quarter final game against Narara Valley started an absolutely blistering
run into the final with the boys playing faultless rugby. They overcame Narara 25-5 in a score that really flattered the
opposition.
The next game was against Lisarow, the number 2 ranked team for the day, defeating them in a tough game 15-5, leaving
us with a dreaded encounter with the formidable St Eddies, a team that the school has only once previously beaten in any
form being incredibly strong and bruising. The Tumbi boys showed amazing skill and courage as they battled back against
the Eddies forwards and then started overpowering them as they proved way too strong winning 10-5 to take the
championship as victors.
All 15 boys that came along exhibited the core values of this campus impeccably, showing great courage, self belief and
played the game in the most respectful and positive manner. Everyone played out of their skin, however, the standout
performers were Andrew Petersen, Lemeki Connor, Jake Slee and Chase Partridge as they were led outstandingly by Joel
Small and Jarad Leach as the wise heads around the ruck.
All boys that played should be very proud of themselves and should be congratulated on how well they represented their
campus.
Mr Howard - A very proud Coach
