I
t is amazing what a difference a year can make.
As I sit here typing this, our dentist is providing care
in our brand new dental clinic. An attorney is providing
assistance to a domestic violence survivor through one of
our new legal projects. Workshops are taking place daily
covering everything from housing application assistance
to financial literacy, gardening to Zumba. We even have a
fruit orchard that is now in the ground, growing. Bread for
the City has truly blossomed into a hub of the community,
with each and every day bringing a bustle of activity.
None of this would have been possible without you —
your support, your time, your dedication to helping those
in need.
While Bread for the City has grown much over the last
year, we are not through yet. Demand for our services
continues to go up. Last year alone we helped 31,000
people in need. 31,000. And this year we are poised to
see that number rise yet again. In our food program alone,
demand is up 20% compared to the start of the year.
It is for these reasons that we have developed a new
3.5 year strategic plan — a guide for the future of Bread for
the City. Our goals include:
• Expand our Food Program to include single,
able-bodied adults.
• Become a Federally Qualified Health Center,
a must given that we are on the verge of doubling our
patient load.
• Reinforce our behavioral health programming with
the hiring of new mental health therapists and medical
social workers.
• Expand our Southeast Center facility, which has
hit capacity and continues to face an ever increasing
demand.
• And more. We will also develop a vision practice,
increase Pre-Employment Program enrollment by
50%, develop community organizing initiatives in our
legal clinic, improve staff diversity, and increase client
engagement beyond the provision of direct services.
In short, we are aiming to become a preeminent
anti-poverty organization in the District of Columbia, and
this plan will help us achieve that goal. I invite you to
read more about our plan at www.breadforthecity.org/
strategicplan.
Likewise, I invite you to read more about our
accomplishments over the past year in this annual report.
We have done so much, yet have been called to do even
more. Join us.

their finances through the
Representative Payee Program.
From job readiness

literacy classes to healthy
cooking demonstrations
and gardening workshops,
Bread for the City offers
a wide range of on-site
education opportunities
for clients to develop selfsufficiency and important
life skills.
New Additions
Bread for the City is growing... in some cases, quite literally. Here are some of the highlights:
DENTAL
Our new dental clinic is open for
business... years ahead of schedule!
We provide everything from routine
examinations and cleanings to extractions
and denture fittings. In our first five months
of operation, our dentist Dr. Steven Myles
(Dr. Smyles!) has treated 437 unique patients through 941 total patient visits.
Annually, we expect to serve 660 patients through nearly 1,900 visits.
CLINIC
HOUSING
ACCESS
PROGRAM
After seeing so many clients grapple with
the frustration of unstable housing, we
launched this program to help people
navigate the city’s affordable housing
system so that they can secure housing
as quickly as possible. Since March
2011, we have helped 17 clients find
stable homes.
CITYORCHARD
115 volunteers +
2 spring days =
1,000+ fruit trees in the ground, growing. Once these trees mature, we will be
able to provide upwards of 40,000 lbs. of free fresh fruit (apples, Asian pears,
persimmons, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries) to DC residents in need.
Our family law clinic has broadened its
scope to include greater support for
domestic violence survivors. Through
the provision of legal representation,
we serve both their immediate needs
through Civil Protection Orders, and
long-term needs through divorce
proceedings, child custody, child
support, and public benefits assistance.
In its first three months, we have already
helped 20 survivors achieve safety and
peace of mind.

Bread Life
A Wonderful
Work-InProgress
D. Mary Timeyin, client board member,
shares her story about her journey at
Bread for the City
W
hat happened to me in 2009 is the same
thing that happened to thousands of
people across the country at that time:
I was abruptly laid off from my job. In an office full of
younger people, I was considered obsolete.
On the outside, I gracefully walked out of
my manager’s office and headed to the nearest
unemployment line. On the inside, though, I was
devastated. I was so upset trying to handle it all that
I didn’t even realize my health was deteriorating. My
blood pressure was through the roof, and my walking
had gradually turned into a limp. Simply put, I needed
help.
That’s how I ended up at Bread for the City, where I
knew that I would be treated with dignity and respect.
Dr. Joan E. Myles in the medical clinic showed me that
my health was in my control, and nutrition consultant
Sharon Gruber helped me learn to take better care
of myself through a variety of nutrition educational
activities and support groups.
Here at Bread for the City, I had the opportunity to
learn, to grow, to understand. I wasn’t badgered; I was
encouraged. When they reached out to me, I’d reach
back, and as a result, I really began to feel better.
So, today I am a work-in-progress—a wonderful
work-in-progress from the information, the sharing, the
mentoring, the hand-holding that I have received. It’s
just been an incredible journey of improved health. I’ve
lost weight and gotten my cholesterol under control,
and I’ve learned how to stay away from unhealthy
food.
Now that I am in a better place, I’m always looking
for ways to give back. I donate what I can financially,
but I also donate my time.
In fact, I’m proud to say that I am now one of
the newest members of Bread for the City’s Board
of Directors. The ability to hear, to share, to give, to
exchange ideas and information is very, very important
to me — especially because I still use the services.
I truly see myself as a voice for the other clients.
To all those who give to Bread for the City, I hope
you understand that I am truly a product of your
support, your kindness, and your generosity. Your
donations make all the difference in the world to
people like me; they really do.
