starlight Fall/Winter 2014 An HNMCS Publication Charmed by Chantal New York HNMCS Helps Athletic Achievements Student Retreats Starlight Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 1 message from the head of school A s I leaf through this latest edition of the school newsletter I can’t help but think about the many wonderful opportunities our girls have to foster their confidence and develop their leadership skills. Nowhere is this more evident than in the students of our two graduated classes. Our recent alumnae have been back to our school during spring break to speak about their university experiences. Many of them have found their transition into higher learning to be seamless, with credit to the preparation that they received from HNMCS. In addition to managing their academic studies many alumnae are readily taking on leadership positions in the extracurricular activities offered at university. Our dedicated faculty and staff strive to optimize the potential of every girl and do everything necessary to place students on a successful path for their future. It is certainly reassuring for us to see our efforts come to fruition. As you browse through the pages of this newsletter, look for the many ways our school has given students the opportunity to challenge their fears and embrace the chance to try on leadership roles. From the assortment of outdoor learning activities to the array of student led initiatives, the ultimate goal is to provide an enjoyable school experience that nurtures confidence and enhances teamwork skills. This is how we tailor our programs specifically to the way girls learn best. While we always look for ways to evolve and improve our instruction and guidance in leadership development for our students, the one thing that remains constant is our commitment to living the Catholic Core Values of our founding religious orders. This will always be the bond that holds us together. Warm regards, Sincerely, Marilena Tesoro 2 Holy Name of Mary College School 2241 Mississauga Road, Mississauga, Ontario L5H 2K8 H o l y N a m e o f M a Phone: r y C o905-891-1890 l l e g e S c h o oFax: l 905-891-2082 www.hnmcs.ca contents 4 spotlight Community BBQ Chantal Kreviakuz 6 tuned in Student Achievement Christmas Remembrance Day Spirit Week Alumnae News 16 reaching out Day of Hope Philippines Relief Walk for Uganda 19 athletics ROPSSAA Volleyball Flag Football Tennis Swimming 23 boundless adventures Algonquin Park Camp Northland New York Wanakita YOUTUBE LOGO SPECS PRINT main red gradient bottom C0 M96 Y90 K2 C13 M96 Y81 K54 white black C0 M0 Y0 K0 C100 M100 Y100 K100 PMS 1795C WHITE Find us online! The school grounds were transformed into a playground for families, teachers and students to enjoy. After a run through the inflatable obstacle course and a ride on the mechanical bull, the delicious BBQ dinner and popcorn definitely hit the spot! Meanwhile, the cafeteria was a buzz of chatter as old friends reunited and new friends welcomed. Smiles were beaming brightly, and many chose to flaunt their creativity by having their face painted. Despite cool weather, students and parents took advantage of the ice cream truck, feasting on all kinds of delightful treats. All in all, it was an amazing evening of family fun for a community that values time spent together. Special thank you the HNMCS Parent Council and to all of the volunteers who so generously donated their time and effort to make the event such a success. 4 Holy Name of Mary College School Students are inspired by Chantal Kreviazuk Witnessing a live performance by one of Canada’s greatest artists is not something HNMCS students will soon forget. Double Juno Award Winner and six-time platinum selling singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk graciously greeted our eager students, faculty, parents, and media guests in the gym and opened the assembly with a moving song from her new repertoire. Addressing the assembly, she then challenged the audience to reflect on the elements one requires in order to maximize one’s talents. Determination, inspiration, struggle, confidence and support were key discussion points in her description of the life journey that has brought Chantal to where she is today. Upon sharing incredible insights, she continued to perform several new songs that have yet to be released, which was quite a thrill for the audience! Arts students enjoyed a special opportunity for an extended visit with Chantal, where she empowered the girls to be true leaders by reflecting carefully about their use of technology and social media, urging them to be sure that they connect with others in a genuine and meaningful way. Later, Chantal generously spent extra time signing autographs and taking photos with many of the girls who were both moved and inspired by her wisdom and musical brilliance. She concluded the visit with a hauntingly beautiful piece called “Surrounded”, one of her well known pieces from earlier in her career. Starlight Chantal’s genuine nature and musical talent touched students, parents and faculty in a profound and memorable way. As a parting gift, under the direction of Ms. DiMauro, the senior school music students presented a stunning rendition of Chantal’s song “Morning Light”. The HNMCS community extends sincere gratitude and thanks to the Brereton family who generously provided this memorable experience. Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 5 tuned in Celebrating Student Achievement Grade 6 visit to Crawford Lake The Academic Awards Night was a wonderful evening of celebration, marking the many achievements and talents of HNMCS students. Each student who achieved an Honour Roll standing (80% or higher) or Honours with Distinction (90% & higher) was recognized with a certificate and a star pin. The HNMCS Award of Excellence was awarded to students in each grade who achieved the highest overall average. Recipients of the Award of Excellence included Gabrielle Fava (Grade 7); Rebecca Lau (Grade 8); Leah Duarte (Grade 9); Carmen Russo (Grade 10); and Lianna Kuzminski (Grade 11). On September 30th, the grade 6 class braved the rain and had a wonderful trip to Crawford Lake! The “Life in the Longhouse” programme offered there is specifically suited to the curriculum. The girls had the opportunity to go inside a reconstructed longhouse and see what life would have been like for the native people. Everything they needed they found in the world around them. A walk through the forest was compared to a shopping trip to Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Home Depot! As the girls were led on a guided hike around Crawford Lake, they learned about this amazing lake, the ecosystem that surrounds it and the clues to the past that were buried at the bottom. A special thank you to Mrs. Stephen for joining us to help supervise the girls! The Katie Bride Spirit of the School Award honours an HNMCS student whose contributions are uniquely different yet equally significant in impact to the school. The Katie Bride Spirit of the School Award recipient, Jenny Farlow, is a young lady whose impact will be felt long after she leaves the school. This award is in memory of Katie Bride, a spirited HNM alumna whose memory lives on through those who knew and remember her wonderful spirit. This award was presented by Katie’s mother. The Felician Sisters Award is presented to the HNMCS student who is an excellent role model in their faith and has shown exemplary service to others in the HNMCS community. The recipient also receives $500.00 toward their 2013-2014 school tuition. This year’s recipient, Alyssa Francavilla, is recognized for her amazing achievements and commitment to serving those in need. This award was presented by Sister Lynn in recognition of Alyssa’s remarkable 280 hours of service. 6 Holy Name of Mary College School International Day of the Girl In support of the International Day of the Girl, the HNMCS lobby was transformed into a graffiti wall based on the theme “Why I am proud to be a Girl”. Each student or woman walking through HNMCS was asked to contribute to our display by adding a poem, a thought, a brief story, or an illustration to express their ideas on the subject. Middle school and senior school students contributed wonderful and thoughtful comments on the topic of being young women. Organizations around the world participated in this important event that recognizes the power of young women to change the world for the better. The Day of the Girl was first established in an effort to balance the inequality experienced by women around the globe. This year’s theme was “Innovating for Girls Education”. Growing with God Grade 5 and 6 classes traveled to Mary Lake to embark on their new school year together. The theme of the day was “Growing with God” and each student was called upon to learn to trust new friends and expand on previous relationships. The Mary Lake Retreat provided an opportunity to come together as members of the Catholic community and reflect on the relationship they have with God. The girls spent the day participating in trust games and examining the HNMCS Core Values. The day also marked the start of the grade 5 and 6 “secret friend” project, which will continue throughout the year. The girls have drawn names of girls from the opposite grade, and will spend the year secretly sending small notes of encouragement and homemade gifts to one another to help build a sense of belonging throughout the year. Starlight Grade 7 Retreat The grade 7 class had a wonderful day on their retreat to Balls Falls Conservation Centre. Ms. Anderson thoughtfully organized and facilitated the retreat for the students, ensuring that the girls had an amazing time building and strengthening their bond with God. Working with this year’s theme: “One with God and Ourselves”, the girls were able to set a strong foundation for the year. Some of the best moments of the day included discussions about beauty, making bracelets of love to symbolize their common bond, creating collages filled with messages of gratitude and appreciation for each student, and a nature walk to see the falls. Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 7 winner, Josh Cassidy, who recently achieved the world’s fastest marathon. Josh Cassidy was very inspirational as he spoke about his life story, the many obstacles he overcame, and goals he has achieved. He shared his experiences and the many life lessons he has learned at an early age. Take Our Kids to Work Day 2013 After the amazing session with him, we visited the Google campus. The workplace is amazing with many different components of Google, such as YouTube, Financial services, Commerce and more. The site is filled with a wide variety of rest spaces, and entertaining activities, such as ping-pong, billiards and arcade games. Overall, the day was incredible and really eye opening. - Alexandra F. ‘17 - A Student Perspective - Grade 9 Girls’ Night In Grade 9 students were thrilled to experience Girls’ Night In, an annual sleepover event for the grade 9 class. The afternoon and evening included a range of activities and important discussion topics such as empathy and social media. The girl shared a wonderful pasta dinner together and also learned an energizing dance routine with Ms. Jeffries. The sleepover event culminated in a lovely mother-daughter breakfast the following morning. The grade 9 girls participated in all activities with an open-minded, enthusiastic approach, enjoying the opportunity to strengthen their bond as a class. Volunteer student leaders from grades 11 and 12; Nicola Henry, Colleen Hayman, Camara Muzoora, Aleeyah Samuels, Kathleen Pham, Claudia Petosa, Lianna Kuzminski, Teighan DiPrima, Kathy Maciag, Carmen Russo, Kendra Tatemichi, Savannah Stephen, Brittney Purai, Aniela Opolski, Ophelia John, Laura Colangelo, and Jenny Farlow, were wonderful role models who generously gave their time overnight and put an amazing amount of energy into the program. 8 Many of my peers thought I’d be coming to HNMCS for Take Our Kids to Work Day since my mom works in the Office of Admissions, but, thanks to my aunt, I was invited to attend the day at CIBC’s marketing office. The day was very well organized and helped me explore different career paths for my future. The day included a tour of the Main Branch, presentations on Diversity in the Workplace, Smart Budgeting for Students, an information session on Technology, which showed me how to build an App, and also Careers in the Financial Services. After a break for lunch, we attended a presentation by the CIBC Marketing team on their upcoming sponsorship of the PanAm Games, and had the opportunity to meet Paralympic Holy Name of Mary College School Remembrance Day 2013 Our school community gathered to recognize those who have dedicated their lives to the service of our country. Led by our Grade 11 Historical Society representatives, Carmen Russo ‘15 and Kendra Tatemichi ‘15, the girls took a few moments to reflect on the efforts of Canadian women during multiple war efforts. Leah Duarte ‘16 also shared a powerful and moving excerpt she prepared for the Grade 10 history class. We were blessed by the musical talents of Ms. DiMauro, who lead us in the singing of our national anthem. Through reflection and prayer, we were able to consider the significance of sacrifices made by the brave souls who commit their lives to the preservation of peace. His Eminence Cardinal Collins - A Student Perspective - The Grade 12 Philosophy class had the opportunity to attend a lecture presented by Cardinal Collins at the University of Toronto Mississauga. In 2014, we see that the world we live in greatly differs from the world that is portrayed in the storybooks of the young Catholic schoolgirl Madeline. On this particular day, the young Catholic girls in navy blue and white had an opportunity to seek wisdom from Cardinal Collins. In a world where girls are facing issues such as body image, self-esteem and bullying, HNMCS students have managed to hold onto our beliefs and traditions, taking these a step further by sharing them with the world around us. This is a time when young women of our faith need to know who they are, where they came from and where they are going. A main message from the Cardinal was that in order to achieve heavenly purity you may need to make a long journey. One cannot get to heaven the short and easy way; it is a long trek from “the Inferno”. Cardinal Collins was very complementary of the Divine Comedy, reminding us that it is currently a bestseller, even though it was first published 700 years ago. There were some parallels drawn between modern day life and the Divine Comedy. His Eminence suggested that everyone should have good friends - like the ones Dante had on his journey - who help them on their journey to purity, in particular, friends that have faith and reason. In addition to the amazing lecture, a professor of the university gave the students some insight and background information on Dante’s Inferno, leading to some great conversation on the ride back to Holy Name. A definite highlight was the Cardinal’s short reading from the Divine Comedy, and in Italian no less! As it may seem like an intimidating read, Cardinal Collins suggested finding a good translation with a lot of notes. He even suggested that everybody try to read it. There were several recommendations of other good reads, including, The Seven Story Mountain by Thomas Merton, and The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. The former may be an obvious suggestion, but Cardinal Collins called The Lord of the Rings “unconsciously Christian,” and reminded us not to be corrupted by anything, even a small golden ring. This personal interaction with Cardinal Collins was particularly special, and it is a great comfort to know that the girls of HNMCS have the support of their faith and the structure of the Catholic Church to carry them on their journey. - Ophelia John ‘14 Starlight Christmas Hamper Donations Christmastime is often busy with preparations for celebrations with family and friends as we share in the joyful news of Christ’s birth. Some would say that gift giving has become synonymous with the Christmas season, but for families that are trying to make ends meet, this can be a tall task. Aware of this challenge, HNMCS students have established a tradition of preparing gifts to be donated as part of the Christmas Hamper Program at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton. Each homeroom class shared the role of purchasing and wrapping gifts for a family who does not have the means of purchasing presents. Students collected gifts of all different shapes and sizes in support of 12 families; these gifts were wrapped in colourful paper and delivered to CCAS. Students were pleased to reach out and hoped to have helped make a special difference for others on Christmas morning. On behalf of the children and families we serve, thank you for your recent support of the Christmas Hamper and Toy Drive for the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton. Your kindness reflects the true spirit of giving, bringing joy and hope to children, teens, and families.” - Lisa Hostein, CCAS Hamilton Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 9 Fall Spirit Week The school was bursting at the seams with colour and wonderful enthusiasm for our 6th Annual Spirit Week! Monday was a cozy day where students sported their colourful flannel pyjamas, and even some onesies were spotted! Tuesday was twin or triplet day where students were mirror images of each other. In lieu of being a twin, some girls chose the creative option of dressing up as their teacher. Wednesday was another expressive day with everyone saying aloha for Hawaiian day. Halloween on Thursday took on a more spooky tone as students and staff showed up in creative costumes. HNMCS gave the judges of the costume contest the tough task of choosing a winner! Finally, on Friday we went back in time with House Decade Day. Students gathered in the gym for some friendly House competitions, where we heard songs from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Later, students danced up a storm at the school dance party proving that the amazing spirit of HNMCS students cannot be denied! 10 Holy Name of Mary College School Celebrating the Virtue of the Month The virtue of the month of November was peacefulness. HNMCS celebrated this theme at mass, which was hosted by the Grade 10 Religion class and Ms. De Angelis. In preparation, the student body was asked to write down an inner battle that they have faced at some point in their lives. At mass, these written notes were sealed inside a jar and released to God in hopes of receiving peace within our hearts and minds. As an introduction to the mass, the Grade 10 students thoughtfully prepared a beautiful reflection. Standing at the front of the chapel, each student lit a candle from their neighbour’s, and named an inner battle they have struggled with. This brave presentation was a powerful one, and reminded each of us of the common struggles we undertake in our human experience. Father Robert Mignella of Merciful Redeemer spoke to the congregation about the importance of remembering those who have gone before us, and that, although losing someone we love is a sorrowful experience, hope is found in Jesus Christ as we are promised eternal life. To conclude this special mass, the choir sang the beautiful, and appropriate, Dona Nobis Pacem, which translated from Latin means: Grant us peace. Mini-Med Amazing Race In collaboration with Roche Canada, the HNMCS Science Department provides a unique opportunity to students and shares the rewarding benefits of careers in science. The innovative Mini Medical program brings volunteer faculty, scientists, medical students, and healthcare professionals into the classroom to teach science and spur discussion about science, medicine, and compassionate patient care. Students enjoyed a lunch and an opportunity to discuss with their professional Roche mentors. Participants were then presented with certificates for their involvement in this innovative program. “It was a very educational and exciting experience! We went on a ‘Amazing Race’ using our knowledge from past Mini Med classes and then we got to visit Roche and thank all of the speakers and sponsors who donated time to our program. Thank you Roche!” - Jaimee P. ‘17 & Hayley S. ‘17 This co-curricular is a popular choice as the workshops and seminars are informative and challenging! The Mini Med students in grade 7-12 participated in an Amazing Race style event in Port Credit and then traveled to Roche Canada to conclude their learning about Clinical Pharmaceutical Trials. Starlight Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 11 Senior Choir Christmas Performances The talented Senior Choir performed at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society’s 23rd Serendipity Auction at Carmen’s Banquet Centre in Hamilton. This was the choir’s third year performing at this community event and it has now become an annual tradition. The choir welcomed guests in the front lobby, performing a variety of festive Christmas songs. Teachers and professional opera singers, Ms. Santoni and Ms. DiMauro, also delighted the audience, singing beautiful duets. The choir received countless accolades from guests, and they have already been invited back for next year’s event! The senior choir also had the pleasure of joining the young gentlemen of St. Michael’s College School at their Christmas Concert. This joining of voices is another annual tradition in which the music departments collaborate. The choir sang “God Bless Us Everyone”, also performing unique arrangements of “Christmas Eve Sarajevo” and “Away in a Manger”. The joint Christmas Medley was arranged by St. Mike’s music teacher, Daniel Douglas, and performed with St. Mike’s grade 9/10 band. 12 “Congratulations to all the girls of the HNMCS senior choir who stole the show at last night’s St. Mike’s Christmas Concert. The girls were the perfect balance of pitch, poise, and polish. Bravo one and all!”- Mr. Enzo Carcasole, SMCS Faculty Christmas Concert The auditorium was filled with Christmas cheer as HNMCS presented the 2013 Christmas Concert. This concert beautifully showcased the many talents of our students, and included many colourful and exuberant performances. There were several dramatic acts; including the grade 5/6 “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”, the grade 10 English class “The X-Mas Factor” and the grade 10/11 Drama class presentation of a comedic skit entitled “Family Vacation”. The middle and senior school dance teams made a strong impression as they presented their choreography with poise and style; and the grade 11/12 Music class performed a charming “O Christmas Tree” and were certainly dressed in appropriate decorated costumes! The grade 7 and 8 students were active in several performances, including dynamic dances, skits, and Christmas Holy Name of Mary College School carols. Julia Orsini and her SMCS counterpart Julian Drudi, sang a beautiful duet “Baby it’s Cold Outside”. The ESL class presented a multi-lingual version of “Rudolph” while the grade 9 students bravely took on the French rendition of Jingle Bells, “Vive le Vent”. As expected, the senior music classes and senior choir performed with exceptional vocal talent, engaging the audience with several beautiful carols. The masters of ceremonies, Jenny Farlow and Lianna Kuzminski, were a theatrical dream, dazzling the audience with wit, humour, song and dance. The 5/6 set design club, and the backstage audiovisual crew worked as a team to bring all of the elements of the show together seamlessly. Great accolades are due to the director of the show, Mrs. Di Mauro, whose tireless work ethic, commitment and musical talents continue to enrich our community. The support team, Ms. Anderson, Mrs. Apuzzo, Ms. DeCourcy, Ms. Goodman, Ms. Jefferies, Mrs. Prillo, Mr. Pereira, and administrative staff, assisted in countless ways to allow the concert to come to life. The Historical Society provided a beautiful history of the candy cane, and treated guests to a sweet treat to celebrate the event. This concert remains a highlight of the school year and has become an integral part of our school identity as it underscores the value of the arts, leadership, teamwork, determination and resiliency. The students continue to inspire the faculty with their enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to take risks in front of a large audience. This joyous celebration allowed us truly to prepare our hearts for a merry Christmas as we used our God-given gifts in joyous celebration. Starlight Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 13 Senior School Semi-Formal This wonderful evening of dancing was an amazing success! The senior school girls were dazzling in their glittery dresses and fancy heels! Everyone enjoyed a great meal and a very healthy dose of dancing! The decor for the evening was black and gold, inspired by “The Great Gatsby”. Thank you to Ms. Goodman, Daniela Ferrari and all of the teachers who came out to support an evening of food, dancing and fun! Grade 5 and 6 Clay Mask Workshop The Grade 5 and 6 classes thoroughly enjoyed their workshop at the Living Arts Centre, where they created clay masks. The creative pieces represented each of the girls’ unique personalities and creative abilities. The girls loved working with the great textures of the clay and exploring the possibilities of this artistic medium. HNMCS and DECA Congratulations to the HNMCS girls who did a remarkable job representing our school at DECA: Kathryn Nairne, Hayley Sontag, Victoria Kirou, Elyse Ring, Teia Balsdon, and Jessie Torchia. All of you demonstrated confidence, professionalism, and creativity in presenting solutions to issues in the business world. Way to go girls! 14 Father/Daughter Social Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make the Father/Daughter Social a spectacular event. Everyone had a fabulous time and many a young lady was impressed by the dance moves of her father. From the decorations to the prizes, to the amazing food and beverages, the night could not have been better. Thank you to Mr. Brereton and all the dads and moms who made the event a special memory that will be treasured forever. Holy Name of Mary College School Alumnae News The Importance of Visual Art Taking Visual Art throughout high school for me started as just a passion. I never really regarded it as a course to be taken as seriously as Math or Science, however it was important to me then because it was something I truly enjoyed doing and excelled in. It allowed me to burn off stress and gave me an outlet to express my creativity and thoughts. I can, without a doubt say, with no exaggeration, that Art was just as influential to me in my engineering program at McMaster as any other course in high school. As first year Engineering students, we are expected to take a mandatory engineering design course that involves making 3D sketches and designs, later translating these into a computer software design program called CAD. Taking Visual Art at HNMCS helped with this tremendously, and to be honest, set me apart from the other engineers in my program who excel only in Math and Science. A lot of the thinking one uses in Art must also be used in engineering, such as being able to visualize three dimensional space in your head, as well as just being creative in the way you do things and problem solve. I learned that I cannot stand out from the 1000 other engineers in my program by excelling in calculation skills alone, because there will always be someone better and faster, and when you get into the work force, computers do all of that for you. What helps me stand apart and gives me confidence is my ability to think differently, to be able to use my hands to actually create a physical product, and to lead my peers who have skills, but may not know how to make the most out of them. I will forever consider myself an artist, whether it be in sketching or engineering, or even just in my day to day life because being able to see things from different, creative perspectives is something you will use your whole life and is a skill that will always be in demand. - Andrea Giampuzzi, ‘13 University Destination Student Programme Acadia Norberg, Samantha '12 Nutirtion & Dietetics Boston University Olivares, Isabella '13 Engineering Acadia Norberg, Samantha '12 Nutirtion & Dietetics Boston University Olivares, Isabella '13 Engineering Concordia University Smith, Elizabeth '13 Journalism Dalhousie University Gilligan, Sarah '12 Arts Humber College Gritti, Karissa '12 Business Administration (Co-op) / Marketing McMaster University Smirlies, Victoria '12 Humanities Barker, Emma '13 Social Sciences 1 Emmanuel, Amanda '13 Social Sciences 1 Giampuzzi, Andrea '13 Engineering 1 Harris, Torri '13 Social Sciences 1 Nguyen, Christine '13 Health Sciences 1 Hudon, Kristin '13 Commerce Pelletier, Jessica '12 Arts, Bader Int'l Study Centre, England Rojas, Marines '12 Commerce Giordano, Alexandra '13 Psychology Gorman, Katrine '13 Retail Management Rinomato, Veronica '13 Taking a Gap Year Roniotis, Danielle '13 Business Management Savannah State University Simmons, Kirsten '13 Social Sciences 1 University of Central Florida Loaiza, Kristal '13 Pre-Med University of Guelph Salter, Brittany '13 BSc Hon:All Other Science Majors/Spec University of Ottawa Webb, Meredith '12 Bachelor of Social Sciences, Honours in Conflict Studies & Human Rights / Co-op & French Immersion University of Toronto Mazzolin, Mary-Catherine '13 Humanities (Arts) Ogan, Camille '13 Social Sciences Santia, Madeleine '13 Industrial Engineering Pavao, Melanie '12 Economics / Political Science Swiderski, Kamila '12 Social Sciences Mlynarczyk, Victoria '12 Humanities Fernandes, Colleen '13 Science & Business So, Tsz Ling Natalie '13 Civil Engineering (Co-op) Ali, Ariana '13 Management & Organizational Studies Borges, Jazlyn '13 Bachelor of Music - Taking a gap year Pellegrino, Chiara '13 Social Science Wilfried Laurier Gibbs, Caley '12 B.A. Hon Arts: Communication Studies York University Memelli, Danja '13 Kinesiology & Health Science BA Queen's University Ryerson University University of Waterloo University of Western Ontario Starlight Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 15 reaching out Running to Beat Cancer Students at HNMCS took a stand together to support cancer research in hopes of making this disease history. With support from family and friends, students worked together to collect pledges for this year’s Terry Fox Run. With this worthy cause in mind, students completed a 3 km circuit through a Mississauga neighbourhood. Peel Region Police also came out on bicycles to ensure safety and to show support. The girls were full of vitality and energy, representing their houses and earning house points for their efforts during the walk. Their hard work was rewarded with freezies and a sense of accomplishment, having continued in Terry’s footsteps and honouring his courageous Marathon of Hope. Grade 5-7 Walk for Uganda The Grade 5-7 classes set out in our neighbourhood to walk 5 km to school and 5 km back home in support of their Ugandan pen pals. While the walk was tiring, it was a great way to gain insight into the daily lives of the Ugandan students who walk long distances to school every day. This walk was an invigorating way to enjoy the beautiful fall colours, and we were glad to have the company of parents, grandparents and siblings who came out to walk with us. Students have previously worked on the collection of funds to support the building of a dormitory at the school in Uganda, in hopes of lessening the travel time for some of the students there. The Holy Name of Mary Dormitory is now fully functional and has been a great asset to our Ugandan friends. HNMCS students continue to work on an awareness campaign focusing on clean water and Malaria prevention. The students are taking great initiative, strengthening their global awareness, and making a positive change in the world. 16 Holy Name of Mary College School “It is an honour for us to have the support of the staff and students of HNMCS and we thank you for your generous donation of $2,239 for cancer research.” -Wendi Fric, The Terry Fox Foundation Thanksgiving Food Drive Thanksgiving weekend marked the conclusion of our ten-day Food Drive initiative to collect goods for those in need. Students demonstrated wonderful generosity and brought in over 2000 non-perishable food items to fight against local hunger. Students rallied with members of their house team to collect the most items. The winning house was Electra as they managed to bring in an astounding 500 items! These generous donations were delivered to the Mississauga Food Bank. Philippines Relief Fund After Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in early November, the students at HNMCS expressed a desire to reach out and help with relief efforts for the victims. The Grade 6 and 8 classes organized a variety of fundraisers within the school, directing their proceeds to the Canadian Red Cross and the Felician Sisters in Bohol, Philippines. The students also extended this opportunity to our local community, by creating an online fundraising page with the Canadian Red Cross. HNMCS raised a total of $360 for these relief efforts. Day of Hope Student Reflections Sheridan Villa HNMCS senior students celebrated the Annual Day of Hope by reaching out to a wide variety of needs in the community. The girls were bright eyed, dressed in spirit wear, and ready to make a difference! They departed from school in groups and headed to their various destinations to connect with others and serve those in need. Locations included St. Francis Table, Good Shepherd, Eden Community Food Bank, St. John Ambulance, and several retirement homes, among many others. Middle school students were also busy making contributions at school, decorating the school for the Christmas season, which involved painting a wonderful stained glass window display in the foyer. This day of generosity and hope touched the hearts of many, and the girls felt rewarded having spent time in the service of others. Starlight The grade 12 students created a slide show to showcase the many activities of the day: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=tRwaKBdNHEE I was a leader for a group of six girls, and our placement for the day was Sheridan Villa. Sheridan Villa is a long-term care senior home, and we volunteered on the 4th floor, where all the patients had several forms of severe dementia. The first task we took on was setting up Christmas trees and decorating. After that, we gathered many of the residents for a Christmas sing-a-long. We sang all types of Christmas carols, and surprisingly, some of the residents knew all the lyrics and took lead of the sing-a-long. Lastly, we gave manicures to many of the female residents, and were even given advice concerning our futures. We chatted the whole time and made numerous friends! It was a great day filled with lots of excitement, laughter, and singing. Sheridan Villa is a great place and my group and I had a lot of fun! – Hope M. ‘15 Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 17 Canadian Diabetes Association I had the pleasure of leading a wonderful group of grade 9 and 10 students in helping the Canadian Diabetes Association. We visited the Chinese Cultural Centre, where we helped to stuff goody bags and promote their upcoming South Asian Diabetes Expo. The girls were enthusiastic and passionate, packing 500 bags in a couple of hours! Our contribution to the expo may have been small, but the greater impact our efforts have made on people learning more about diabetes is just amazing. I’m so grateful to have been a part of such a beautiful cause, with a group of girls who exuded love and hope in all of their actions. – Carmen R. ‘15 Scott Mission and Nellie’s Groups 6 & 8 had the opportunity to volunteer at the Scott Mission and Nellie’s in Toronto. Both placements were different and included lots of work! At Scott Mission the girls served lunch to the homeless while others helped sort donations. At Nellie’s the girls packaged up calendars and did it so efficiently that the entire task was done in just under half an hour. Everyone did an incredible job pitching in, and the girls had a great day at both placements. – Kendra T. ‘15 18 Holy Name of Mary College School World Vision Our group went to World Vision headquarters where we toured the main floor and then split up into smaller groups. One group went to the mail and banking department; Ms. DeAngelis, Shilpa and Aleeyah, and the second group went to the fulfillment department; Colleen and Gaby. Ms. DeAngelis’ group separated Christmas cards sent from the Canadian sponsors to their children all around the world. A very special moment was seeing how much the sponsors really cared about their children through personalized letters and gifts. Colleen and Gaby were placing thank you letters in cards for sponsors and volunteers. We managed to get through about 700 letters, but there was still so many to do when we had to go. It was incredible to see how many people had put their time and money into helping this organization and their cause. – Gaby G. ‘14 athletics Duke of Edinburgh Awards HNMCS celebrates the achievements of Shilpa Jacob, Aleeyah Samuels and Kendra Tatemichi. Multiple Gold, Silver and Bronze 22 Holy Name of Mary College School boundless adventure Outdoor Education in Algonquin Park Plato once said: “You learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” The grade 11 and 12 class had a chance to test this theory on their four-day trip to Camp Arowhon at the end of September. Picturesque Algonquin Park set a beautiful fall backdrop as the girls engaged in a variety of outdoor games, including everything from team activities to low-ropes challenges. Letting loose in the fresh air undoubtedly strengthened interpersonal bonds while encouraging personal growth and reflection. The wonderfully supportive and enthusiastic ALIVE Outdoors Staff promoted the challenge by choice philosophy, allowing each individual to push themselves at their own level, and emphasizing the importance of setting a realistic goal as one approaches a given challenge. Whether students were new to canoeing or to the climbing wall, each girl found a way to safely challenge her own limits, breaking new ground, and growing their confidence. The camp experience came to a close with a memorable campfire, as girls shared skits and songs. The girls also learned how to host a campfire for the upcoming winter camp experience at Wanakita where they will take on leadership responsibilities and work with younger cabin groups. The girls returned to the classroom energized and bonded, with fond memories of this remarkably empowering experience. Starlight Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 23 Camp Northland What better way to start the school year than in the great outdoors? The first week of school, Grade 9 students left pencils and books behind, packed their overnight bags and headed to Camp Northland in Haliburton to take part in a three-day adventure camp. There was no shortage of group activities, personal challenges and team building activities, including canoeing, high ropes, nature hikes, fire building, tent setup and swimming in the lake. Under the wonderful leadership of ALIVE Outdoors and HNMCS Staff, the girls were encouraged to take healthy risks, learning more about themselves and each other. 24 Holy Name of Mary College School Photo by www.groupphotos.com New York In November, the grade 9 and 10 students traveled to NYC and explored the many sights that it had to offer. This trip included an evening on Broadway to view Annie, a visit to NBC Studios and the 9/11 Memorial, celebrating Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and exploring Fifth Avenue and Rockefeller Square. This trip was action packed to say the least! Students enjoyed a wonderful walk through Central Park, and they were particularly excited to visit Strawberry Fields, the 2.5 acre area of Central Park that is dedicated to iconic Beatles singer John Lennon. The mosaic “Imagine” is a beautiful memorial in honour of this wonderful musician and peace activist. New York City was beautiful to behold with lovely fall colours and great weather. Thank you to the girls for being such wonderful ambassadors of HNMCS in the Big Apple! Starlight Issue 5: Fall/Winter 2014 25 Outdoor Adventures at Camp Wanakita HNMCS students are aglow after their fantastic adventure at Camp Wanakita. Experiences like the ones enjoyed at camp in January underscore the undeniable value of outdoor education and the benefits of being physically active in the winter. Students embraced the cold temperatures and learned about the importance of dressing warmly and layering up in order to maintain body heat. Being properly dressed allowed the girls to jump into several activities, including snowshoeing, high ropes courses, tobogganing and an outdoor marshmallow roast over a blazing fire. Indoor challenges included creating culinary concoctions in the Iron Chef Challenge, a huge game of spoons, and games that tested team co-operation and communication. Drumming circles challenged the girls to keep a beat, and experiment with different percussion sounds. As camp time came to a close, 26 the girls enjoyed a slideshow of the week’s photos and a closing campfire hosted by the grade 12 leaders. Cabin groups presented several beautiful songs and funny skits; and girls took to the stage brimming with confidence. The teachers showed their spirit and surprised the girls with a choreographed hip-hop dance routine! The HNMCS Wanakita experience is a special one, but not only because the girls get to spend a week out of class in the great outdoors. The girls value the time spent with friends and their cabin leaders.
