Grand Theatre Presents
Behind the Scenes,
Behind the Program
By Tori Stafford
The old adage
‘The show must
go on,’ takes
on a different
meaning when
it’s your job to
start planning
‘the show’ up
to two years in
advance.
Colin Wiginton, Cultural Director for the City of Kingston,
and Jayson Duggan, Performing Arts Manager, work tirelessly
to ensure the programming presented each season at the Grand
Theatre is diverse, rich, exciting and meaningful. Local writer
Tori Stafford sat down with them for a short Q&A to give you a
behind-the-scenes glimpse of the work that goes into creating
the Grand Theatre Presents series – and some of the exciting
performances in the 2015-16 season.
Tori: Tell me a little about what
your respective jobs entail, and
how you would describe your
roles with regard to the Grand
Theatre Presents series?
Jayson: My key responsibility is
to program a season that is diverse
and includes a variety of offerings
for all members of our community.
Colin: And for me, it’s about
making the Grand Theatre a goto place for people within the
community… Where people go
to experience the best of the
performing arts, to experience
new things, to meet community
members, and be part of Kingston,
all while celebrating the arts and
artists.
Tori: How important is it to
create programming that will
attract a broad spectrum of
patrons?
4
Jayson Duggan,
Performing Arts Manager
Jayson: It’s very important, and
it is key to moving the program
forward. You walk a fine line –
wanting to bring new opportunities
for the community to see, but
also wanting to make sure there’s
enough in the season that appeals
to everybody. We want to be able
to offer new experiences as well as
some of the favourite performers
that people love to see again
and again.
Colin: We’re definitely attracting
a much broader audience, which is
really exciting.
Jayson: And bringing in young
crowds is critical for the life of
the theatre. We need to really
support the development of young
audiences at the Grand, because
they are our future.
2015 | 16
Colin Wiginton,
Cultural Director for the
City of Kingston
Tori: What is the most positive
challenge of your respective
jobs?
Jayson: For me, the most positive
challenge is working toward
confirming a performance – which
is the best outcome, obviously!
Colin: The effort required to
put together a season that is
meaningful for Kingston is huge.
That and the desire to showcase the
best of the performing arts in all its
diversity.
Photo: Rob Mooy
Jayson: We really hope that
the community is looking to the
Grand for unique experiences – if
they want something different or
something new, something fresh,
or something to broaden their own
experience – we want to offer it all.
Colin: It’s about trust and that
quality of discovery. Some of the
best feedback we get is when we
take a risk and people come to a
show not knowing what to expect
and discover something new they
really love.
Tori: What are you personally
looking forward to in the
2015-2016 Grand Theatre
Presents series?
Jayson: I’m really interested in our
world music program this season
and there are some outstanding
artists coming to the Grand
including South African world
music star Johnny Clegg and Dakha
Brakha from the Ukraine.
Also, Yamato, the drummers of
Japan, are back by popular demand
and they are one of the great taiko
drumming groups in the world
today.
Our dance program is very exciting
for 2015-2016. Our international
company is the Hong Kong Ballet,
and we have Canada’s Royal
Winnipeg Ballet, along with
two electrifying Ontario-based
contemporary dance companies
that I am very excited to be
presenting.
Colin: Picking up on that, I love
the dance series and subscribe
myself. I’m really enthusiastic
about the series this year, the
highlight is really going to be the
Royal Winnipeg Ballet, because
they’re bringing ‘‘Going Home
Star – Truth and Reconciliation.’
It is a performance about First
Peoples based on the writing of
Joseph Boyden, so it is going to
be a fantastic opportunity to see
a world-class dance company, as
they deal with challenging issues
relevant to all Canadians through
contemporary dance.
And then there’s programming
opportunities that come up on
shorter timelines. We’re always
really excited, as the season unfolds,
to announce additional shows we
think people will love … especially
when it involves bringing emerging
Canadian talent to Kingston that
people will be excited to see.
So, without further ado,
on with the show!

Tuning up The Grand
By Sarah Withrow
Before the curtain rises on
your favourite act, the Grand
Theatre’s production team
meets to make sure your good
time goes smoothly.
For example: before Ricky Skaggs
and the Kentucky Thunder were
due in town for a sold out show
this spring, the team met around
folding tables in the lobby to go
over their checklist:
“Has the pit been sold?” Zemba’s
asking if the seats have been
sold in what is sometimes the
orchestra pit.
“Orchestra’s sold,” confirms
Rebecca Brown, box office
coordinator. The box office
will remain open until after
intermission.
“Extra sound seats?”
“Hospitality?” asks Dianne Zemba,
Grand manager.
“This is old-school country. They’re
using their own console,” says
Stafford. They’ll need to shift seats
to make way for it.
“They asked for a pot of black
coffee. They don’t need milk and
sugar. And they want towels,” says
Robert Downes, in charge of frontof-house. The team remarks on
the non-demanding nature of the
Kentucky Thunder.
And, yes, Skaggs has merchandise.
And, yes, he’ll be signing
autographs after the show. And,
yes, the cleaners will pre-start new
rolls of toilet paper.
“What’s the set?”
Everyone’s tuning up for you. So
you can hear. So you can see. So
nothing comes between you and
the show.
Larry Stafford,
production supervisor
and Dianne Zemba,
Grand Theatre manager
Photo: Top right, Rob Mooy
“It’s 45 20 45,” says Larry Stafford,
production supervisor. That’s
theatre lingo. It means Skaggs
and Co. will do a 45-minute first
set, 20-minute intermission and
45-minute second set.
Show by show, they go over events
for the coming week. Every once
in a while, the auditorium door
opens and the beautiful voice of
one of tonight’s performers, Sarah
MacDougall, floats through the
lobby and reminds the team why
you are coming.

An evening with
Heritage
Blues Orchestra
"A masterpiece of musical
African Americana…"
Living Blues Magazine
thurs | oct | 15 | 7:30 pm
On top of the prodigious
instrumental prowess and talents
of three incredible singers in Bill,
Junior and Chaney, the strength
of the Heritage Blues Orchestra
comes from rich experience and
the simple refusal to segregate the
elements of the African-American
musical canvas.
The band members’ collective
history in blues, jazz, R&B and
gospel – and the passion, pride,
talent and musical wanderlust that
consumes Bill and Junior and so
thoroughly excites Chaney – make
the Heritage Blues Orchestra the
most exciting African-American
roots group to come along in a
very long time.
What begins as a loving celebration
of the past emerges as a whole
new adventure in music: this is the
exhilarating and exciting sound of
the Heritage Blues Orchestra.

sweat of lumberjacks as you watch them jiving to a
traditional folk soundtrack. The young circus troupe
hails from the small town of Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez
and they have clearly drawn upon their country roots
to find inspiration and energy for this unique creative
project. The experience feels and smells authentic. The
artists perform incredible feats of aerial acrobatics
directly inspired by the natural raw materials of the

The Irish Rovers

All band members hail from Ireland; however, The
Irish Rovers formed in Toronto. Since then there
have been over 40 albums in North America with
more internationally. The band's new album "The
Irish Rovers, 50 Years" is being released this year

The days of the long tours are coming to an end for
these lads as they are now completing one last world
tour. After that, they will rove again only for special
events, festivals and longer stays. International
touring will happen only on a very limited scale.

Darlene
Love
fri | nov | 27 | 7:30 pm
Darlene Love’s background vocals for The
Blossoms, The Crystals, The Righteous
Brothers, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye, and
Elvis Presley (to name but a few) set the stage
for her emergence as a star in her own right.
Her Billboard hits include: "He’s A Rebel," "The
Boy I’m Gonna Marry," "Da Doo Ron Ron,"
"Wait ‘Til My Bobby Gets Home," "He’s Sure
the Boy I Love" and the #1 holiday classic
Christmas "Baby Please Come Home."
In 2011, Darlene Love received her industry’s
highest award when Bette Midler, a great fan
of her work, inducted her into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. During the celebration, the
two ladies enjoyed performing “He’s A Rebel”
together. As part of the festivities, Love also
sang “He’s A Fine, Fine Boy" backed by another
distinguished fan, Bruce Springsteen.
Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed
Darlene Love to be "one of the greatest singers
of all time” and that certainly rings true,
but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more
concisely: “Darlene Love is Rock N’ Roll!”
Darlene Love starred in the 2014 Oscarwinning documentary film 20 Feet From
Stardom. At the Oscar's she stole the show with
a soulful approach to the acceptance speech
that viewers are still talking about.
“Darlene Love’s thunderbolt voice is as embedded in the history of
rock and roll as Eric Clapton's guitar or Bob Dylan's lyrics."

Grand Theatre Presents
Made in (___)
Immigrant Youth's Stories
By Anita Jansman
The best theatre holds a mirror up to the triumphs and maladies of people within a culture. That
is certainly true for a group of young newcomers to Canada and to Kingston. Inspired by writer
and actor, Mani Soleymanlou, whose one-person play, One/Un, was part of the 2013-14 Grand
Theatre Presents series and traces his journey from his birthplace in Iran to Montreal, the young
women staged a multi-media exhibition called Made in (____).
Soleymanlou’s experience led
him to question the authenticity
of his own Persian origins, and
to face his own mixed feelings
as his homeland, Iran, falls
into turbulence. In many ways,
his experience parallels the
experiences of the six young
participants in Made in (____) –
Vanessa, Odile, Noor, Yara, Dak
and Diagnestie – whose journeys
from their homes, often places of
conflict, were variously dangerous,
complicated, heart-breaking and
heart-warming.
Coming from countries such
as Myanmar, Pakistan, the
Philippines and the Democratic
Republic of Congo, the six
teenagers’ lives intersected in
Kingston, a city that became their
new home. The exhibition explores
the ideas of change and identity
over time and geography, through
the telling of personal narratives
that are as diverse as the young
women’s experiences. Made in
(____) was so compelling, the
exhibition continues to this day on
a website, MadeinYGK.com, with a
newcomer’s story being added each
month.
“MadeinYGK is not so much for the
newcomers, but for residents who
already live here,”says Christian
Medina, New Youth Settlement
Worker with the Immigration
Services Kingston and Area (ISKA).
“We wanted to raise awareness of
the difficulties newcomers face
when arriving to a new place.” The project aims to educate the
Kingston population on family
reunification issues, the difficulty
refugee claimants face to stay
and establish a life in Canada and
the lengthy process to become a
Canadian citizen.
Told in their own words, the
participants chronicle their journey
from a distant land to Kingston,
with a fierce honesty and intensity.
These real-life stories are, indeed,
the stuff of theatre.
48
Martha Kroeker, Program
Coordinator, Cultural Services
at the City of Kingston believes
MadeinYGK.com “demonstrates
how theatre and art can act as a
catalyst for something greater,
how it can inspire community
movements.”
Visit the website at
www.MadeinYGK.com
"My parent’s decision gave me the
opportunity to learn about a new
culture and to live a good life. They
sacrificed the life they had to travel to
a new country for the second time, to
give their children the opportunity to
become better people that can make a
difference in the world."
"I felt frustrated not being able to
express myself to anybody. However,
my life changed when I went to ISKA
youth group, my friend introduced
me to this great organization, which
helps immigrants to adjust to the new
environment."
"As a kid, I was forced to think like a
mature person… I was not allowed
to live my childhood in that place. I
didn’t have rights… the only thing
you could do was keep trying to

"Sometimes I would think to myself,

trying to convince ourselves that
we are doing the right thing. I don’t

is that this is not our home, but we

the grand theatre
foundation
Since 2010, the charitable,
non-profit, Grand Theatre
Foundation has raised funds
to support the presenting
program and educational
activities of Grand Theatre
Presents. Individuals and
businesses from the Kingston
community show their
support for the Grand Theatre
Presents programming
that impacts thousands of
residents every year.
More than 5,000 students attend
subsidized shows with their schools
every season, thanks to the funds
provided by the Grand Theatre
Foundation. Ticket buyers to many
of our performances can get up
close and personal with artists
through In Conversations and
Talkbacks due to the extra funds
made available by the Grand Theatre
Foundation. Aspiring dancers,
musicians, playwrights and authors

Grand Theatre Presents
behind the
curtain
By Mark Bergin
Melissa Mahady Wilton, the City of Kingston's Dance Engagement Coordinator,
lives and breathes dance.
She's passionate about diversity,
believing that dance is for anyone
who wants to take part.
"The arts provide us with a universal
language for connecting," she says.
"We find humanity without the need
for language."
The Grand Theatre Foundation
supports a Presents program that
brings professional artists, master
classes and talkbacks to the Grand
Theatre.
"When we bring in artists, we are
tending our community garden," says
Mahady Wilton. "We are allowing
individuals who may not have had
an opportunity to engage with the
arts an access point where they feel
comfortable and safe."
She says that the Grand Theatre
Presents programs allow emerging
artists to further develop their
technical skills and to connect with
others.
"The master classes also allow mature
artists to embrace a peer and find
a new direction," she says. "It helps
them explore new approaches to
their craft, something that may have
intrigued but intimidated them."
52
She says the Talkback programs
have been rewarding as she's
watched attendance grow from 10
or 20 participants to sessions with
150 present.
"At Talkbacks, we all have the
freedom to ask questions we have in
our head but were perhaps too shy to
ask."
She reveals some interesting recent
research about where meaningful
conversations about dance happen.
"Those conversations happen in the
car after the show," says Mahady
Wilton. "The Talkback gets everybody
out of the car and into the theatre."
As the facilitator for these events,
Mahady Wilton catalyzes a childlike sense of wonder.
"I've seen audiences grow in
sophistication," she says. "The beauty
of the talkback isn't for me or the
artist to tell anyone what to think but
to ask the questions so you can have
an informed viewpoint. It's about
your own journey."

Dance Engagement Coordinator

Dancer
in residence
Artistic director,
choreographer and dancer
Peggy Baker will be in
residency at the Tett Centre
for Creativity and Learning
August 22-29. Presented
by the City of Kingston,
Peggy will work on “move”
a 60-minute long dance
installation cast with 16 to 24
local movers: dancers, yoga
practitioners, martial artists
and dance teachers who are
interested in participating.
Peggy Baker and Sahara Morimoto
will lead rehearsals leading up
to a public performance on
Saturday, Aug. 29. Peggy will also
offer “Figures in Motion” a free
presentation featuring a slide show
and talk. Peggy shares a huge
array of photographic images that
reveal intriguing parallels between
contemporary dance and the major
visual arts movements of the
past 100 years. Peggy illuminates
some of the ways in which the
style, structure and subject
matter of Impressionism, Cubism,
Surrealism, Modernism, Pop Art,
Minimalism, Post Modernism
and Expressionism are reflected
in developments and trends in
choreography.
Artistic director, choreographer, dancer
Peggy Baker is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding and influential
contemporary dancers of her generation. Most recently, Baker has been
named Best Choreographer by NOW Magazine’s Best of Toronto Reader’s
Choice (2014). Among her many honours are the Governor General’s
Award for Lifetime Achievement (2009), the 2006 Premier’s Award
for Excellence in the Arts, the Order of Canada, the Order of
Ontario, five Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the Toronto Arts
Council’s 2002 Margo Bindhardt Award, Honorary
Doctorates from the University of Calgary and York,
the 2010 Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the
Performing Arts and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond
Jubilee Medal.
