Welcome to Healdsburg
Parks & Recreation!
It is my pleasure to present the 2015 Spring and Summer Recreation
Program Guide. This year, the Parks and Recreation staff is bringing
you more programs than ever. The Spring/Summer season is full
of great classes, summer camps, swim lessons and special events
– there truly is something for everyone.
We are excited to announce that the Parks and Rec department has
a new tagline - “Come Out & Play!” I wanted to take a moment to personally thank all of you
who participated in selecting this new tagline. We all feel that this simple phrase sums up our
Parks and Rec perfectly and we hope it will encourage and motivate our community to come
out and enjoy all that Parks and Rec has to offer.
I am also happy to announce the City of Healdsburg Community Center garden continues to
flourish. Volunteers help plant and nurture this special garden, which is used as a learning
environment for the children in our afterschool program and camps. Not only do they learn
about planting and eating fresh fruits and vegetables, they also learn about the importance
of giving to the community. The bulk of the fresh, organic produce grown is donated to the
Healdsburg Food Pantry. Last year over 1,200 lbs of produce was donated to the Pantry.
Be sure and mark your calendars for this year’s special events! The always popular Tuesdays
in the Plaza Summer Concert series returns May 26th and our second annual Aquatic Program
Open House and Vamos a Nadar (Let’s Go Swimming) program will be held Sunday, June 7th
from 1-4 pm at the Swim Center.
And for those of you who don’t know, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you how our
Parks and Recreation department is supported. Your Parks and Recreation Department is
supported by program fees and what's called the TOT Tax (Transient Occupancy Taxes). This
is a tax paid by our visitors staying in Healdsburg's hotels, inns and B&B's. It's a 12% tax
on each night's stay; 10% goes to support your parks, senior center, community center and
recreation programs, 2% goes to the general fund for public safety. No other tax dollars are
used to fund this department.

Activity Fee Assistance
Contract instructors are identified in class listings by color.
Contract instructors develop their program curriculum and
may charge a materials fee in addition to the program fee.
Materials fees are payable directly to the instructor on the
first day of the class.
All classes and camps have a minimum number of enrollees
required to conduct the class. We encourage registration
no less than 7 days prior to the first date of the class to
prevent disappointing cancellations due to low enrollment.
We’re here to answer any questions you may have about
our classes, instructors or appropriate placement in a

Cancellation/Refund Policy: The Parks & Recreation
Department reserves the right to cancel classes due to lack
of enrollment or for any other unforeseen circumstance.
In the event that the Department, or contract instructor,
cancels a class or program enrollees will receive a full
refund. Refund requests made by participant 72 hours prior
to the start of a class will be issued a full refund minus a $5
administration fee. Requests received less than 72 hours
prior to start of class will be assessed a $10 administrative
fee. Administrative fees are waived if the participant
transfers to another class or program. Refund requests
made during the course of an activity will be prorated and
subject to a $10 administration fee. Failure to attend a
program or “no shows” will not be granted a refund.

VAMOS A NADAR (Let’s Go Swimming)
Sunday, June 7, 9 am-12 pm

TUESDAYS in the PLAZA
May 26 – August 25, 2015
Join your friends and family in Plaza Park for the
annual Tuesdays in the Plaza summer concerts,
held weekly from May 26 - August 25. Returning
crowd favorite Roy Rogers and The Delta Rhythm
Kings will be part of this years’ series. Healdsburg
food vendors offer an outstanding variety of locally
sourced food on Plaza Street beginning at 5:00 pm.

3RD ANNUAL BUSINESS
SHOWCASE and COMMUNITY
RESOURCE FAIR!
The City of Healdsburg and Healdsburg Chamber
of Commerce and Visitors Center have partnered
to host the 3rd annual Business Showcase and
Community Resource Fair targeted specifically to
residents and business operators. This community
exposition is intended to showcase all of the
products and services available locally. In addition
to featuring various commercial enterprises, the
event will include nonprofit organizations and
other institutions serving Healdsburg. Participating
businesses and food purveyors will be offering
giveaways, specials and samples.
All city departments will have staff available to
provide information about local government,
including: economic development projects, water
and electric conservation efforts and upcoming
construction projects. City council members will
be available to answer questions and discuss
community issues. Please join us!

PicnicReservations. To make a picnic reservation
please complete the online picnic application or call
the Community Center. Fees are paid at the time of
reservation. Group picnic reservations may be made
for the following parks:
Athletic Fields
The City of Healdsburg maintains eight beautiful
parks within our City limits and we invite you to
come out and enjoy them! Most parks have picnic
tables available for use at no cost on a first-come
first-served basis year round. Picnic Reservations
(Permits) guarantee a spot for your event. Our group
picnic sites range in size from four to ten tables;
the amenities vary from park to park. A minimum
of 41 people is required to reserve the large site;
the small sites may be reserved for a maximum of
40 people. Reservations for groups of all sizes are
recommended and may be made a minimum of ten
days in advance, and up to one year in advance.
Inflatable Bounce Structures are currently allowed
in some Healdsburg City Parks by permit. No
private inflatable bounce structures devices are
allowed. For information and the Inflatable Bounce

Healdsburg Ridge Open
Space Preserve
Throughout this beautiful property you find
breathtaking views of the Mayacamas Mountains,
Fitch Mountain, Lake Sonoma basin, the coastal
range and the Russian River at River’s Bend. The
easy to access trails wander through oak woodland,
serpentine chaparral, wetlands and mixed evergreen
forests. This natural preserve abounds with wildlife
and opportunities for hiking, bird watching and
nature discovery. In partnership with the Sonoma
County agricultural preservation and open space
district and LandPaths, the City of Healdsburg
Parks Department continues to manage this diverse
open space for public recreation and the protection
of valuable natural resources. The trailhead is
located at the eastern end of Arabian Way. For

Badger Park Trails
Badger Park features a quarter-mile gravel walking
path around the grass area. Additionally, as part of
the installation of the pedestrian bridge and walking
pathway linking the west end of Badger Park with
Second Street, a half-mile interconnecting trail
system allows park visitors to wander through
the riparian habitat adjacent to Badger Park and
connecting with a trail along the banks of the
Russian River.

Community Center iGrow
Program Garden
The Healdsburg Parks & Recreation Department
is seeking volunteers to help plant, nurture and
harvest produce grown at the Community Center
iGrow Program Garden. This volunteer, communitybased gardening project utilizes the wonderful
raised garden boxes at the Community Center
supporting the Sonoma County Health Action goals
of growing, eating and sharing healthy food within
our community.
The Parks & Recreation Department utilizes the
garden as a learning environment for children in our
after school programs, camps and youth programs
as well as for growing specifically for the purpose
of supplying the Healdsburg Food Pantry with fresh,
organic produce. This year over 1,000 pounds of
tomatoes, squash, lettuce and cucumbers will be
donated to the Food Panty . Volunteers also reap
the benefits of the garden as they are able to take
home fresh produce. For more information about the
garden, how you can help, or to volunteer please call
the Parks & Recreation Department at 431-3301.
Please note: This garden is separate from the
Community Garden plots. Please see information
below on the Community Garden Plots for rent at
Badger Park and the Healdsburg Community Center.
The Foss Creek Pathway and Art Trail now extends
from Grove St. near Dry Creek Road south to the
Chamber of Commerce. The Parks Department,
in conjunction with the Voigt Family Sculpture
Foundation has designed this section of the pathway
to display sculptures from internationally renowned
artists. When complete, the Foss Creek Pathway will
provide a walking and cycling path from the north
end of the city limits south to the Russian River at
Railroad Park. For more information please visit:

Healdsburg Tree Walk
We invite you to learn more about the City’s
beautiful and well-established trees by enjoying
the Tree Walk of Healdsburg. This half-mile
(approximately) self-guided tour is intended to
help you identify some of our most significant
and interesting trees in the downtown area. The
Tree Walk booklet is available at no charge at the
Community Center, City Hall and Museum.
COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOTS
The City offers community gardens at Badger
Park and Healdsburg Community Center. Plots are
available on a first-come, first serve basis with
priority going to current plot holders. Annual
renewal required. The gardening year is January 1December 15. For more information or to be put on
the list for the 2016 gardening year please call
Parks & Rec at 431-3301.

SUMMER CAMPS (3-16 YRS)
PRESCHOOL SUMMER
CAMP (2 ½ -5 ½ YRS)
Each two-week camp offers age-appropriate art,
music, science and literacy experiences. Outdoor
play and exploration are provided each day including
activities in our children’s garden. The Tue/Thu option
offers a shorter day for younger preschoolers and/
or those new to summer camp. Nutritious morning
snack provided. Participants in the Mon/Wed/Fri
camp must be toilet-trained and bring sack lunch with
beverage each camp day.

Ooey-Gooey Fun Factory
Here at the fun factory, children will don their lab
coats and goggles and get immersed in sensory
exploration and experimentation, creating crazy
concoctions through slimy squishy science fun! Be
ready to get messy with the silly scientists at the
Ooey-Gooey fun factory!

Nature Explorers!
Children will take a bug’s eye-view in this fun nature
camp learning all about those creepy-crawlers and
the gardens where they live. Nature-inspired art,
songs and games will be included. Respect and care
for nature will be a focus as children enjoy up-close
encounters with insects, bugs, and flowers!
6/29-7/10/15 (No camp 7/3)
Trains, Planes, Cars
and More!
Campers will explore all things that go! From horse
and buggy’s and trains, to bikes, row boats and
jet planes! The children will be the conductors as
they build roads, race ways, and ramps, decorate
their own vehicles and props, and create some silly
transportation-inspired artwork.

Jurassic Jungle
Campers will enjoy this wild camp as they learn
about jungle animals, including some animals
that are in danger of going extinct, and even some
that aren’t around anymore! Children will make
masks, go on scavenger hunts and play wild-animal
inspired games!

KINDER KIDS CAMP
(5 ½ & 7 YRS)
Children who have just completed kindergarten and
first grades now have a camp just for them! These
week long camps will give younger grade-schoolers
an experience that will include all the traditional
camp activities such as cooking, science, arts
& crafts and games & sports! The curriculum is
specifically designed for children aged 5 ½ -7 yrs;
the camp day will include both structured and selfdirected activities. A nutritious morning snack will be
served; all campers bring a lunch.

The Great Outdoors
We will kick off the summer with a trip into
nature! Children will enjoy camping in our in-door
campground, taking part in traditional camping
activities, and cooking some traditional camp foods!

friends will be included in this camp.

Digging Deeper
Campers will enter the world of paleontology and
archaeology in this exciting camp! From mummies
to dinosaurs, they will uncover the mysteries of
the past. Campers will learn about the tools and
techniques scientists use in their field, construct
and erupt their own volcanoes, build pyramids, and
excavate and identify fossils and artifacts!

Backwards Fairy Tales
This week campers will explore some silly and notso-traditional fairy tales and here the other side of
the stories! Children will learn about perspective and
use their imagination to either tell their own story or
put their spin on a favorite classic tale. Retelling and
acting out stories, using costumes and props, will be
a part of this fun camp!
6/22-6/26/15
Campers blast off for a closer look at the sun, moon,
stars, and planets! Children will make constellations,
play with moon sand, assemble their own rocket
ships, and do a little astronaut training as they learn
how real astronauts get ready for space. Camp
wouldn’t be complete without some crazy alien
creations and play!
7/13-7/17/15
Artful Antics
Campers will learn about some world famous artists
and then use them for inspiration as they create their
own masterpieces. Children will explore a variety of
mediums, techniques, and tools—some typical and
some down-right strange—to create fabulous art and
cool creations!
7/20-7/24/15
Water Wonders
Party in the USA!
In this engaging and problem solving camp, children
will explore and play with water in its different forms,
see how it moves through the water cycle and learn
how to conserve this precious resource. Waterbased art projects, fun with ice sculptures, and water
experiments will be included in this water adventure!
7/27-7/31/15
Kinder Karnival
We will wrap up summer camp with a Hawaiian-style
Luau! Part party and part exploration, campers will
enjoy the sand and the sun in true aloha fashion.
Children will create leis and grass skirts, make tropical
smoothies, explore the shore and the sea, make sand
and shell art, and even learn to hula dance!
8/3-8/7/15
Campers will celebrate the 4th of July by learning
some fun facts about this great country, holding an
election, voting a camp president, and doing some
“red, white, and blue” cooking and art projects.
And…it wouldn’t be a party without some traditional
fun birthday party games!
6/29-7/2/15 (No camp 7/3, camp fee pro-rated)
At this creative camp, children will get their ‘silly’
on as they dress up like clowns, create props,
and practice their clown skills, such as balancing,

SIZZLING SUMMER DAY CAMPS (7-11 YRS)
Weekly Camps June 8–August 7, 2015
Come out & Play with us this summer! Campers will have
fun each day with awesome outdoor play followed by
science projects, cooking, arts, crafts, sports & games.
Each day will offer a safe but exciting environment with
new, fun and dynamic activities. In the afternoon (except
Wed) campers will be transported to the Healdsburg Swim
Center for an afternoon of swimming and games. Camp fee
includes healthy morning and afternoon snacks and entry
to the pool. Campers bring their own lunch.

Sizzling Star Wars-Jedi Training Camp!
Week seven of our Sizzling Summer Camp is our highly popular Star Wars Jedi Training Camp. This
camp returns annually from A GALAXY FAR, FAR, AWAY to put Padawan’s through their paces to gain
the skills to become a Jedi! Each Padawan will be given a galactic passport that will have to be stamped
with each completed mission before graduation on Friday. Only real Jedi’s will have the true “Force” to
complete them all! Are you one of them? Join us and find out!

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING
SUMMER LEADERSHIP
PROGRAM (13-17 YRS)
This program for teens is being offered as an
opportunity to participate in a leadership role during
The City of Healdsburg Summer Camps. This
program is designed for those who wish to gain
the necessary training and experience to become a

PRESCHOOL BIRTHDAY PARTIES (3-5 YRS)
Parents can relax and enjoy the fun as the Parks & Recreation early childhood recreation staff put on a party for
preschoolers at the Community Center! The two-hour party package includes the use of the multi-purpose room
for special games and activities that are focused on a playful, age-appropriate theme, supervised by trained staff.
Choice of Preschool Party Themes:
• Pirates & Princesses – Children will dress up as a pirate or princess and board the “ship” in search of
treasure! Making maps, treasure hunts, digging for gold and jewels, and games of walk-the-plank will be
included. Each child will create their own wand or scepters and decorate a treasure box to take home.
• Dinosaur Dig – Young paleontologists will dig up dinosaur bones, excavate dinosaurs embedded in plaster
and paint a mural of T-Rex and Stegosaurus. Dinosaur play will include following tracks, wearing masks and
identifying those giant creatures from the past.
• Carnival – Children will get to help run, and play, a variety of fun carnival games, dress up like clowns and
practice their skills through our “balancing” obstacle course, and perform for others on “stage”. Each child
will be able to create and decorate their own clown props to continue the show at home!
• Mighty Machines – Kids will explore the world of machines including ramps, pulleys and gears. Dump trucks,
back hoes and cement trucks will be part of the construction site play. Building roads, raceways and bridges
using a variety of materials will be available.
• Forest Fairies and Wood Sprites – Whimsical costumes will be available for dress up. Children will create
crowns and wands followed by a ribbon dance. Forest friends such as owl, squirrel and bear puppets will visit
and each child will decorate their own cuddly teddy bear.
YOUTH BIRTHDAY PARTIES (6-12 YRS)
Mobile Recreation Party at the Park (6-12 yrs)
Staff will bring the Mobile Recreation Unit (MRU), a trailer equipped with a wide array of games and
activities, to the Healdsburg park of your choice for 2 hours of fun outdoor games and activities to keep
party guests engaged & entertained! Arts & crafts activities also included.
Star Wars Birthday Party (6-10 yrs)
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away Jedi knights and Princesses enjoyed celebrating their birthday by
making light sabers, playing Star Wars games and making Star Wars arts and crafts. The birthday child and his/
her guests will celebrate their birthday by reliving this time honored Jedi tradition. These 2 hour parties are held
at the Community Center.
Sports Themed Birthday Parties (6-12 yrs)
Our birthday party staff will lead your budding athletes through fun and games in a sports themed party. We can
cater to your child’s favorite sport (Soccer, Football, and Dodge Ball) or we can arrange an “All Sorts of Sports”
party allowing guests try out a bit of everything! Children are bound to have a ball with us at these birthday
parties! These 2 hour parties are held at the Community Center.

MRU and outdoor parties are offered April-October. Preschool and indoor parties at the Community Center

PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are offered for individuals
from ages 2 years to adult at any level of
swimming ability who prefers one-on-one
instruction for either themselves or their
child. The focus of the lessons will be on
the individual’s specific needs or goals –
stroke technique or development, swimming
endurance or simply learning how to swim.
Private lessons are offered in 1 week
sessions, Monday-Thursday for 25 minutes
per lesson. See schedule on page 17.

Our comprehensive swim lesson program
offers swimming instruction for beginner
to advanced swimmers ages 6 months
to adult. All levels, with exception of
parent and infant classes (Guppy), have

taught techniques to help their child with simple water

ADVANCED BEGINNERS
Lessons focus on introducing swimming skills and
water safety

Child must be comfortable in the water, be able
to enter the pool independently, put face in water
easily and understand the concepts of kicking and
scooping. These basic swimming concepts will serve
as the stepping stones for introducing swimming

Lessons focus on development of swimming skills

Children in this level must be completely comfortable
going underwater, be able to enter the water feet first
from the pool deck and swim front crawl for about 15
feet. Refinement of front crawl and introduction to back
stroke and treading water will be the focus of this level.
ADVANCED LEVELS
Refinement of swimming strokes and advanced
water safety skills are focus of these levels
Marlin (5-14 yrs)
Child must be able to swim front crawl half the
distance of the pool (or more), face down with a
continuous kick while attempting side breathing.
Focus of class is on perfecting front crawl, improving
back stroke and introducing breast stroke and
swimmers start (dive) from pool deck.
Dolphin (5-14 yrs)
Participant must be able to swim the whole length of the
pool (25 yards) using front crawl with side breathing and
backstroke without assistance. Refinement of swimming
strokes is emphasized as is building swimming
endurance. Butterfly stroke and flip turns are introduced.
Diving and water safety skills are further developed.
BEGINNERS
Lessons focus on water acclimation and basic safety

The Turtle, Duck and Seal classes are for children with
little or no water experience. This level focuses on water

Aikido “The Way of Harmony” is a martial and selfdefense are developed in Japan. It is non-violent,

Come learn to sew! Beginners will learn basic sewing
skills such as pinning fabric, marking sewing lines,
sewing in a straight line and using sewing notions
(tools). Students will complete 3-4 projects such as
pillow forms, covers and cases, totes, hanger covers
and cloth baskets. In the Intermediate class students
will be improving their sewing skills and learning to
read patterns. Students will make 2-3 more advanced
projects such as a tote bag, pajama bottoms and rag

Health is at the center of our life. Qigong
pronounced “chee gong” is all about good health.
By simply moving the body in gentle circles and
easy relaxed stretches, with balance practices and
breathing exercises, every joint and organ of the
body is massaged, stimulated and brought into
harmony. Qigong is followed by Tai Chi (taiji) 24
Form. This is a short form of slow movements
that coordinate the body and breath, right and left
balance, mindfulness. It is described as “moving
meditation” and “medicine in motion”.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is

PYSCHOLOGY OF
RELIGION
Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss
psychiatrist whose psychology centers around the
concept of individuations, the lifelong process of
awakening to our total selves, which includes the
experience of religious imagery as an expression of
the objective psyche. In this class, we will explore
Jung’s perspective on the God-image as living entity
and dynamic process and the stages in the evolution
of the Western God-image. We will also engage
in activities that invite an attitude conducive to
unlocking the unconscious to find what is waiting to
be discovered.

BALANCE AND STABILITY CLASS
Feeling a bit unstable on your feet? Risk of falls
increases proportionately with age. This class will
have you practice strengthening exercises sitting in
chairs or standing. When standing there will always
be something for you to grab onto if needed. You
will learn to relax in your body through breathing
exercises. As you gain better balance you will start
feeling more at ease and therefore energized &

WHO PAYS FOR OUR PARKS & RECREATION?
The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) also referred to as a “bed tax” or “room tax” is a the tax
assessed to visitors staying in all lodging establishments within the city limits. This includes
hotels, motels, resorts, inns, suites and B&Bs.
The current TOT rate in Healdsburg is 12%. In 2004 voters passed a ballot measure
designating 10% of all TOT revenues to fund our Parks and Recreation. The remaining
2% goes into the General Fund to support public safety. (No other tax dollars fund this
department.) Healdsburg residents wanted to ensure there would be an ongoing funding
source for parks, recreation and open space.
Community Services
Community Services is the department within the City’s organizational structure that houses all
functions related to parks, open space, recreation and senior services. This department is set up
as an enterprise fund which means that its revenue must support its operational expenses. In
addition to TOT, Community Services obtains revenues from grants, facility rentals, program fees
and donations. There is NO General Fund subsidy to the Community Services department.
The Community Services Department provides a wide range of amenities and services to
community members:
Parks and Open Space: Healdsburg has over 220 acres of parks and open space that is operated
and maintained by Community Services. Within this acreage is Plaza Park, Healdsburg Ridge, two
dog parks, multiple playgrounds, picnic areas, a skate park and athletic fields. The Foss Creek
Pathway and other downtown green spaces are also maintained by parks staff.
Community Facilities: Among the community facilities funded by Community Services are the
Villa Chanticleer, Healdsburg Community Center and the Senior Center. Not only do these facilities
house programs, they are available to citizens and local organizations for meetings, activities and
private events.
Senior Services: The Senior Center is an activity and resource center dedicated to providing seniors
with services and programs that encourage physical and emotional well-being, connection with
others and enrichment.
Recreation Programs: These activities are designed to meet a variety of needs, interests and age
groups. Program offerings include sports, education, wellness, leisure, camps and enrichment
classes for youth and adults. Scholarships are offered for those who cannot afford the fees yet want
to participate in programs.
Special Events: The most notable event put on by Community Services is the Tuesday Concert
Series held in Plaza Park each summer. What many people do not realize is the amount of
assistance other event organizers receive from Community Services. City staff works behind the
scenes to ensure that events held in Healdsburg are safe and well-coordinated.
TOT Revenues Provide Direct Benefit to the Community
All of the TOT derived from the local lodging industry directly benefits Healdsburg residents.
TOT funds those amenities that significantly contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by
Healdsburg’s citizenry.

ACTIVITY ASSISTANCE (SCHOLARSHIP) PROGRAM
The City of Healdsburg wants every resident to have the opportunity to participate in our
recreation programs. The Activity Assistance Program ensures that eligible Healdsburg residents
are afforded this opportunity. Program fee assistance is by application; assistance offered for
approved applicants is 50% of the total program fee. Staff reserves the right to offer additional
assistance on an individual basis based on demonstrated need. Maximum assistance per person,
per year is $150. For an application or more information please contact us at 431-3301. The
application is also available for download at www.healdsburgparksandrec.org. Please note:
Not all programs offered by the Parks & Recreation Department are eligible for assistance. The
Friends of the Senior Center organization is pleased to offer the Rose Pavoni Scholarship providing
Healdsburg’s older adults with help with program fees. This program is separate from the
department’s activity assistance program. For details please contact the Senior Center at 431-3324.
