why jump rope?
Why is keeping kids moving important?
Find the Words ANswERS
Research shows that the older children are, the less
physical activity they perform each day. Add this to a
regular diet of unhealthy foods and drinks like sodas,
fast food and snacks high in fat and sodium, and
children are at risk for developing diseases such as
diabetes and heart disease at increasingly early ages.
why jump rope?
Jump roping is a fun and effective way to exercise. With
jump roping, your body burns more calories and gets
a better workout than most other popular physical
activities. It is a great cardiovascular exercise, which
means that it is great for your heart.
Jumping rope can be done alone, but is also a great
group sport. Jump rope teams often learn doubleDutch jump rope routines and even participate in
competitions. Jump rope teams are a way to keep fit,
make friends and have fun all at the same time.

Strengthens the heart
Strengthens muscles
Builds strong bones
Promotes healthy body mass
Develops skills such as agility, balance,
coordination, timing and rhythm
Jumping rope for 10 minutes burns about 125 calories
– or 750 calories per hour! Ten minutes of jumping
rope is as effective as 30 minutes of jogging. The more
you jump the more calories you burn.
Remember it’s not just the energy we spend being active
that is important, but also what energy we put in our
bodies. To be healthy, we need to balance the energy we
put in our bodies in the form of food and drinks with
the amount of energy we spend exercising.
What equipment will I need?
Besides the great physical benefits, the best thing about
jumping rope is that it is not expensive. All you really need
is a jump rope and a pair of gym shoes, and you can get a
great workout almost anywhere!
What type of jump rope should I use?
Many types of ropes are available. The most common
jump rope is the speed rope, sometimes called a licorice
rope. These are usually made out of a flexible plastic. Some
beginners prefer beaded ropes, because the extra weight of
the beads makes them easier for learning jump rope basics.
How long should my jump rope be?
Jump ropes come in many sizes. Your jump rope needs
to be the correct size. Standing on the center of the jump
rope, the handles should come up to your armpits.
Do I need music?
Music with a great beat makes jump roping fun, and
helps you practice timing and rhythm, but music isn’t
the only way to keep your jump roping on track.
Many jump ropers recite and even create fun rhymes
and chants to keep the beat.
