Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve; 2. Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community 3. Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation 4. Be fair to my employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public and all those with whom I have business or professional relationship; 5. Recognize the honor and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society; 6. Offer my vocational talents; to provide opportunities for young people; to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in the community. 7. Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession 8. Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded to others in a business or professional relationships I have just finished one quarter of my term as President of our Club. And if you have been reading my First Class Voyager journal every week, you might have noticed that my schedule for almost every day of the week is almost full with Rotary activities, projects and events in our club, in our zone or in our district. It made me realize that being Rotary club president in today’s culture and environment is not what it used to be, especially for our past presidents. Ten, twenty years or more ago, there were only fewer club members and there were also fewer clubs in our district. As such there were fewer projects, activities and events to attend to. As a past president related to me once, before we have only one project or activity per week, usually a few hours before the weekly meeting day or a weekend at Masaya na kami. In Rotary International’s plans and pro‐
gram, we have been given 6 areas of focus on the projects that we should do and prioritize at least one for each area, aside from the district’s thrust. We also have to keep up with today’s lat‐
est technology in communications. We now have to make computerized presentations and sub‐
mit our president’s monthly reports and weekly club bulletin to the district online. It is no wonder that the cost of running a club and attending to all the district activities and events has increased during the past years. It is like running a small size business, kaya lang psychic income ang kapalit ng service that we provide to our members and to our community and we are happy to do it over and over again. Testament to this is our many district officers and past district governors who have even extended their commitment to service beyond our club level. So for all the aspiring presidentiables of our club this coming December, good luck and best wishes to all of you. As you will note, the following activities I attended occurring one day after the other, should serve as an example of the duties and responsibilities of a club president of our club. As I men‐
tioned last week, last Tuesday, Sept 24 we were at Cavinti Laguna for RC Cabinti’s 5th Induction, sisterhood agreement renewal signing and book donation to Bulajo Elem. School. We arrived back home past twelve and early the next morning I have to get up and go to our book donation to two schools in our schedule. Together with Treasurer Elmer Tan and PD Nestor Garcia, the book do‐
nor, we delivered and turnover the math exercise books to the principals of Concepcion Elemen‐
tary School and Marikina Heights Elementary School. Then last Thursday morning at 7 am, Sept. 26, 2013 we responded to Mayor Del de Guzman’s invitation to him in planting 1,000 Robusta coffee seedlings in the Sierra Madre mountains in Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo. We commemo‐
rated the 4thanniversary of Ondoy. We went to the Our lady of the Abandoned Church where a mass was celebrated at 7am. Aside from myself, also present during the mass were Mayor Del, PDG Efren de Guzman, Dir. Willie Reyes, PP Tony Fidelino, PP Romy Cruz, Sec. Chris Merino, and Rtn Tops. After the Mass, we travelled to Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo in the new air‐conditioned Coaster of the city. In the van aside from myself were PDG Efren, PP Tony, Sec Chris and FC Pres. Nick Baterina of RC Marikina West. At the planting site, a program was conducted, ably emceed by Vice Mayor Fabi Cabiz, which include the signing of the donation of 50,000 Robusta Coffee seedlings to be planted in the area in San Mateo. We were joined in the planting by my FC Presi‐

Our club had a inspiring New Generations conference last Friday, September 27,2013 with our young wards of the Alternative Learning System with some Rotaractors and Interactors from other Clubs within our Zone. We give thanks to PP Mayor Del de Guzman and PDG Jun Farcon who took time off from their busy schedules to share with these young people their sound advices through their experiences. Truly these Rotarians are Models for our Youth. We also express our gratitude to all who have supported our annual project. We had a sumptu‐
ous lunch at Luyong after the activity sponsored by PP Onie Aguinaldo and Pres. Hermie dela‐
Paz. On September 28, 2013 together with our New Sister Club, the Rotary Club of San Juan, our club co‐hosted the Rotary 101 for the Marikina and San Juan Zones. The informative talks were given by PP Floro Francisco, PP Manny Reyes and CP Perfecto Bernad. Our very own DDG Vincent Santos as one of the emcees provided a lively atmosphere at the Camelot Hotel. It always good to refresh our knowledge of Rotary. We hope we can enhance and inculcate these principles to all Rotarians in our Club. We recognize the efforts of IPP Benjie Malaya and Baby Rotarian Pete Co in conducting the 2nd Buntis Party last Monday September 30, 2013 at the Fortune Health Center. This project aims to educate expectant mothers on personal health and newborn care. This is in line with one of Rotary's area of focus‐ Maternal and Child Health. October is the Vocational Service Month in which Rotary fosters and supports the application of the ideal of service in the practice of all vocations. We should learn to use our occupa‐
tions/vocations in order to serve our community. Please register your participation with PD Rey Montoya for the District Ten Pin Bowling Tour‐
nament with the opening ceremonies on October 06, 2013 Sunday 8:00 a.m. at the Star Mall in Shaw Blvd. Mandaluyong, We hope we can duplicate our win in the Duckpin Tournament. We invite every member to support our team in fellowship during the duration of the Tourna‐
ment (October 06, 13, 20 and 27). Please continue sharing Rotary to others by inviting prospective members to our club and to our DGSR's. It is one of the responsibilities as Rotarians to recruit new members for the con‐
tinued growth of Rotary and our Club. We have recently paid our Rotary International dues last Monday. We again call on all those who still have unpaid dues and accountabilities to settle these as soon as possible for us to continue with our community service projects and smooth administration of our Club. Our club have undertaken numerous projects that made impact in the lives of people in our commu‐
nity. However, I have yet to see a detailed record of any such project or projects. For posterity, and in order to guide the future leaders of our club, I am publishing a template for chairmen to accomplish each time they finished a certain project. Cash Position Report

MALAYA Director/Standing Committee Chairman – Maternal Child Health Cataract Surgery Check‐up Medicine Refraction BY: PP JIMMY CAPCO Preventable Blindness Chairman ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ PREVENTABLE BLINDNESS AUGUST REPORT 6 40 4 5 Coming to grips with a climate‐defined future (1ST PART) BY JOSE MA. LORENZO TAN In a nutshell, last week’s update from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirms that climate change stems from human activity. The data also indicates that it is ad‐
vancing faster than many people thought. Whether or not the Philippines is responsible for this, we will get hit. How are we going to get hit? As individuals, and as a nation, what options, or opportunities do we have? First, as a global report, the UN report describes all projected climate impacts in terms of averages. However, climate change impacts do not take place uniformly. They are non‐linear, and site specific. For certain impacts, such as storms, extreme rainfall, and sea level rise, some data already indicates that the Philippines sits well within ground zero. However, Baguio will face very different challenges from Cebu or Davao. To be appropriate, planning and responses should, therefore, be site specific. They should be bottom up, and not top down. Second, beyond direct manifestations, such as rainfall or storms, there will be indirect impacts such as shifts in the range of infectious disease, economic dislocation or increased demographic pressure from forced migration from areas of high risk, toward zones of refuge. Appropriate responses should, therefore, be holistic. Silo thinking will make matters worse. Third, the human footprint aggravates climate vulnerability. In the Philippines, threat multipliers include rapid population growth, and the clear trend toward un‐
planned urbanization. All cities do not face the same mix of vulnerabilities. Once again, this is not a level playing field. It is a slope. As we face a climate‐defined future, the question is not whether to develop, but how. Whether public or private, all new investments and retro‐fits need to be evaluated through a bi‐focal climate lens. Mitigation looks at the reduction of carbon. Adaptation considers the management of risk. Both need to be done. Any investment, that simply falls back on business as usual technology or formulas, is a waste of money–suffering from short‐term utility. For example, the Philippine Water Code was written in 1976. That policy is outdated. Cities along Ma‐
nila Bay’s coastline, and in many other parts of the country are sinking due to over‐extraction of groundwater. This increases flood risk. And yet, the virtually unregulated use of deep wells continues to be tolerated. We do not have a Land Use law. Land use planning is often done to show compliance, rather than build local competitive‐
ness. Change is never easy. But, in this case, it is imperative. The Best Android Tips and Tricks (series) (continuation) How to Close a Running App The Android system doesn't need you to close a running app for every instance. But in some cases you may need to force stop an app that's misbehaving, or like playing a game, you may need to actually close the app in order to start a new level rather than continuing the last. Here are the steps to follow: 1. Run the Settings app and tap Apps under DEVICE. 2. Select the app you want to close. 3. Tap the 'Force stop' button and tap 'OK' to confirm. How to Set and Clear a Default App In Android, you can set a file to open with a certain program by default as you do in Windows. For example, if you have installed an image viewer such as QuickPic, the system will ask you to select an app when you try to open an image file (See the screenshot).  To set a default app to open the file, check 'Use by default for this action' before you tap that app. The next time you tap an image file, it will always open with the app you've selected without asking you again. What if you need to clear the default app? 1. Run the Settings app and tap Apps under DEVICE. 2. Choose the app you do not want to launch by default. 3. Tap 'Clear defaults' under LAUNCH BY DEFAULT. How to Uninstall an App Installing apps from the Google Play store to your Android device is convenient, likewise remov‐
ing them is pretty straightforward. Tap the All Apps icon on the tray and select the Apps tab on the top. Touch and hold the icon of the app you want to uninstall. Drag and drop the app icon over the Uninstall icon then tap 'OK' to confirm. (The Uninstall icon appears only for the app that can be uninstalled from the system.) Alternatively, you can run the Settings app, tap Apps under DEVICE then select the app you want to uninstall from the list. ...from page 3 First Class Voyager
dent classmates and their delegation from RC San Mateo, RC Marikina West, RC Rodriguez, RC Metro Marikina, RC Marikina North, RC Marikina Uptown, RC Marikina Heights, and RC Marikina South. RC San Mateo Highlands and RC Rivercity Marikina also sent representatives. The next day Friday, Sept 27 at 9 am we held or New Generations Conference at the MRYC with the theme ”Every Rotarian an example to Youth”. We gave our welcome address to this gathering organized by Sec Chris Merino. We had two very good speakers and good examples to our young audience composed of Rotaractors, Interactors and ALS students. Mayor Del de Guzman talked about his journey as a leader and now as Mayor of our city. PDG Jun Farcon talked about servant leadership and his journey as a Rotarian encouraging the youth to follow his example. Thanks to our many members who participated in the program and witnessed the proceedings. They in‐
clude, aside from those I already mentioned, PP Onnie Aguinaldo, PP George Ty, PE Dodjie Ca‐
balquinto, Dir Willie Reyes, Dir Manny Pecho, Treas Elmer Tan, PD Jessie Cruz, Rtn Roman Villame, Rtn Boyet Culminas, and Rtn Tops Rodriguez. Since it is almost noon, after the conference, some of us went to Luyong Restaurant for lunch. The following day Saturday, Sept 28 at 12noon, we went to the Camelot Hotel for the Rotary Academy 101 for Cluster 2 (Zone 4 and Zone 7) hosted by our sister club RC San Juan and co‐
hosted by our club. PP Ver Farcon, Dir Boni Barotilla, Sec Chris Merino, and Rtn Peter Co with his spouse attended this seminar. DDG Vincent Santos served as emcee together with PP Jovie Sison of RC San Juan. Almost all of our Zone 4 FC Presidents were in attendance as well as almost all the FC Presidents of Zone 7 and their members. As this is a district seminar, DG Louie Ticman called the Rotary Academy 101 to order. I gave the welcome remarks while my classmate FC Pres. Therese Montecer of RC San Juan introduce all the district officers, club presidents, Rotarians and guests present. Last Tuesday Oct. 1, 2013, 6pm, we went to the 34th Charter Anniversary of our sister club, RC Ka‐
muning at the Quezon City Sports Club ballroom. We were called in front to sign the renewal of our sisterhood agreement in a rolled “Kalatas ng Kapatiran” document with DG Francis Rivera of District 3780 as witness. FC Pres. Art Herrera signed the document together with our respective secretaries. PP Rene Florencio, who is our chair for local interclub relations, came with us to‐
gether with Dir. Boni Barotilla, Sec Chris Merino, Dir. Manny Pecho and PE Dodjie Cabalquinto. As this is a costume party, we all went with our respective movie character costume. Everyone who attended had a very good time as expected from this very friendly sister club of ours. This is the fourteenth entry in my journal. Once again Ienjoin our members to help Save the Ma‐
rikina Watershed Land Protected area comprising of about 26,000 hectares which is now badly denuded. Let us plant our indigenous, medicinal and fruit trees to have diversity and attract more flora and fauna in the area. The birds will scatter the seeds from the fruits they eat and start a new tree.Let us save our environment. Let us make a difference in the lives of others as we change our lives as well. Let us take his year’s Rotary theme to heart “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”. Thank you.
