Today we welcome local friends Sevenoaks Rugby Football Club.
Formed in 1925 & like Medway now octogenarian we look to reverse the result played at Allianz Park last
Season, when Sevenoaks won a very hard fought & close game. It was a memorable day for both Clubs
with many of the development players also running out onto Saracens’ home pitch in a sparkling second
match. Thank-you to Sevenoaks for arranging the day.
Like our visitors we are working towards being the leading Community Rugby Club in the South East and
both clubs know that when we meet, be it at under 8’s, under 17’s or at Senior level, it is always a fierce
contest. Rarely is there a convincing result, often only a few points separate the teams. We will have to
be at our very best today to take any of the spoils.
Do meet & greet our visitors from Sevenoaks today, please help to make them feel welcome at Priestfields.
Geoff Kempt & I host a Volunteers Lunch today where we thank our volunteers at Medway in their efforts
& support of our local community club. We are incredibly fortunate to know so many friends & volunteers
who give outstanding service to our club and our great game…Thank-you all.
We recently played Staines RFC in the Cup at Medway, and we enjoyed a “curtain-raiser” where our
under 9’s played our new community partner, King’s School. It was a great way to warm the crowd and
all the players also formed a Guard of Honour as the 1stxv teams took to the pitch. We have agreed to
repeat the event soon……..thank-you King’s.
We thank all of our Sponsors today, especially Mr Gary Friel of Kent Insurance Services, today’s match
sponsor. Gary will choose the man of the match. Gary is a very experienced Financial Advisor, do say
hello & thank-you. I thank my Partners at DMD Law for sponsorship of the match ball.
Finally, please support the referee today and enjoy your afternoon. Both Clubs are wished the best of
luck, especially those wearing Scarlet & Gold. I will see you in the Clubhouse & on the veranda.
Now………………….C’mon Medway!

A stand up comedy show is lined up for Friday 23rd January. This is an adults only event.
Tickets are priced at £15 a head. A meal is included in the cost. There are three acts and it
promises to be a great nights entertainment. Tickets are available through the club shop.
Following the the 1st XV’s fine victory over Middlesex side, Staines, the club have been
drawn away to Maidstone in the regional quarter-final of the Intermediate Cup. The match
will take place at the Mote ground on 3rd january kick off 2pm.
We are pleased to announce that England and British Lions flanker Richard Hill will be
speaking at the senior club dinner on 15th May in the clubhouse. You may recall that Richard
was scheduled to speak last season however an illness in the family prevented this and he is
keen to honour his promise and has confirmed he will speak this season. Great news!
The quarter final of the Kent Cup sees Medway drawn at home to National 3 league side
Tonbridge Juddians RFC. The tie will take place at Priestfields on 24th January.
On Saturday 13th December the club will come together in the spirit of Christmas to sing
carols led by our Chairman, Mark Marriott. The festivities will commence following the
afternoons fixtures. All are welcome and encouraged to join in.
On the injury front 1st XV players Rob Ellis, Ben Johnson and Luke Burns are back in light
training. Luke Burns and Ben Johnson are two weeks away from being available. Rob Ellis
and Liam Weobley are confirmed as out for the season and Sam Catlin is still not back in
training.
With the French brothers also out for some time and promising second row Tom Brown
suffering a serious hamstring tear last week (and may not be back until late January early
February), all these injuries are having a serious impact on our ability to field full squads on a
Saturday. We would like to express are thanks to all the boys who remain committed in this
temporary period of adversity particularly the Development squad who are underpinning
everything currently.

KING’S SCHOOL REPORT
Medway Rugby Club and King’s School Rochester
have entered into a community partnership this
season. As the whole community looks towards
the Rugby World Cup that is being staged in this
country in the Autumn of 2015 this innovative
partnership ensures welcome benefits to all
involved.
The school has provided additional and much
needed pitch space at “The Alps”, whilst Medway
Rugby Club’s coaching team is working closely
with the King’s staff and pupils to promote rugby
as the first sport of choice. This partnership
also entitles Medway Rugby Club members to
discounted membership at the new King’s Sports
Centre, formerly The Stirling Centre. King’s also
enjoy the coaching available from Medway’s
Premiership team partner, Saracens!
The early fruits of the partnership were seen
when Medway Rugby Club Under 9’s hosted the
Kings school U9’s for a “curtain-raiser”, played on
the 1st XV pitch, ahead of the RFU Intermediate
Cup match against Middlesex Club, Staines
RFC on 8th November 2014. A packed balcony
enjoyed the clubhouse facilities and unusually
pleasant weather conditions as the home side
took an early lead, although King’s determined
defence and counter-attacking kept the halftime score at 3 tries to 2 in Medway’s favour.
Medway’s strength in-depth allowed for fresh
legs at regular intervals and fantastic attacking
rugby from both sides resulted in a final score of
7-3 to the hosts.
Both teams of the U9 players then provided a
guard of honour that clearly inspired the Medway
1st XV, which went on to achieve a convincing
win against Staines and progress in the Cup.
Left to right in the photograph kindly taken by
Mr Alan Deacon is Mr Geoff Kempt (Medway
RFC) Mrs Tracy Bullock (Medway RFC) Mr Glyn
Mitchell (King’s School) England RFU & Women’s
Rugby World Cup Winner Miss Rachael Burford,
Mr Paul Medhurst (King’s School) Mr Jeremy
Walker (King’s School Principal) & Mr Mark
Marriott (Medway RFC Chairman).
With many of the youngsters from both sides
staying on to enjoy a meal together and watch
the 1st XV fixture, we hope this was the first of
many such occasions where we welcome King’s.
With the rugby values of Teamwork, Respect,
Enjoyment, Discipline & Sportsmanship being
demonstrated by both teams, it was a wonderful
display as to how rugby brings people together.

November 1934 – The Rolenians entertained Faversham RFC at Priestfields, where they
gained a decisive 22-0 victory. Caswell made a fine break-through for the opening try with
Stan Butter scoring the second, converted by Rogers. Ron Buxton then scored the first and
second tries of the new half. A third was scored by Caswell and converted by Hodges with
a fine kick. The last try was scored by Eric Cooper. The home three-quarters distinguished
them-selves repeatedly and showed great promise. The Rolenians A XV lost by 24 points
to nil away against Sheerness 1st XV (later to become Sheppey RFC).
In the evening, at the club head-quarters at the King’s Head Hotel, the Rolenians held an
informal dinner. The occasion was a farewell to Jack Hilton Ryder, the club referee, who
had secured a position in the Palestine. He was presented with a cigarette case, suitably
inscribed, from the members.
November 1954 - In a close game, Rochester came back from
being three points down to defeat Ashford 6-3. Jack Walters
(right) playing a good game at centre three-quarter, scored two
second-half tries. Peter Bradley, at fly-half, got his line moving
with alacrity and Fred Dellow, playing hooker for the first time,
gave a commendable performance. Tony Westcombe also
gained much possession with some excellent jumping in the
line-out.
November 1964 – Rochester 1st XV took on the London
Springboks for the fourth occasion, this time emerging victorious
by 8 points to nil. Twenty minutes into the game Keith Snowball kicked ahead and Charlie
Rowles, coming up fast, dribbled the ball over the line to get the first try. Snowball
converted. Sutton was hooking well and from a good heel against the head, John Morgan,
our log serving scrum-half, dived over unmolested. The last quarter of the game was
played in thick fog.
Rochester 1st XV: John Moss; Charlie Rowles, Brian Greatorex, Ken Richards (Capt.),
Shorthouse; Green, John Morgan; Keith Snowball, Sutton, Arthur Leggett; Ken Tanner,
Ivor Walbyoff; Ginger Cooper, Johns, Andy Cousins.
November 1974 - Medway continued a winning run with a lively performance as they
achieved their eighth victory of the season by beating Snowdon Colliery by 21 points
to 8. Ken Westmoreland kicked an early penalty. Bill Knowles opened a space for Tony
Armstrong to score between the posts. Brian Waite converted. Knowles then sent Roger
Gailer away for an easy try which Waite converted. He also landed two penalties.

Medway ‘B’ XV earned themselves a fine victory over a strong Folkestone side. Yorkie
Marriott laid on a second-half try for Graham Gibson, after which they had to hang on and
defend in depth for their win.
November 1984 - A fourteen man Medway Ex. 1st XV overcame Dover 19-0 with Jim
Spackman, their wily old skipper, alternating between winger and flanker. The pack worked
tremendously hard with the two youngsters, Steve Everest and Ian Dance being outstanding.
Paul Whittaker raced 50 metres for a fine try. Phil Lamb converted superbly and also kicked
a penalty. In the second-half they played really attractive rugby and further tries from Dance
and Brian Wolfe (a push-over) wrapped it up.
November 1994 - Away at Park House Medway put on an excellent performance in their
Kent Cup tie emerging victors by 19 points to 8. A good line-out throw to Dave Davies set
up the chance for Lee Marriott to dive over. Maqsood Chaudry broke well from a scrum to
get the second. Colin Germany added two penalties and a dropped-goal. The travelling
supporters played their part in retrieving a foot-scraper which had mysteriously disappeared
from Priestfields around the time Park House had visited the previous season!
November 2004 - On a small pitch, and in appalling
weather, Medway were happy to get away with a 15-6
win at Bexley. Joel Jenkins bagged two tries which
were both converted by Gareth Marlow who also
kicked a penalty. After many seasons service to the
club, Phil Hinchcliffe played his last match in Medway
colours before heading off to New Zealand.
The Second XV, away at Edenbridge, they enjoyed
a 28-10 victory. Matt Lawson, Adam Lamb, Neil
Sword and Richard Ford crossed for tries. Johann
Bazoidenholt converted all four. This gave them four
wins out of four League matches.
