INTRODUCTION
A WARM WELCOME TO CANNES
A very warm welcome
to the 31st edition of
TFWA World Exhibition &
Conference. I hope you all
had a pleasant journey to
what is a marvellous city to
host this great event.
Of course we cannot ignore the
devastating floods which hit
Cannes just two weeks ago, and
it is with much gratitude that all
of us at TFWA acknowledge our
partners in Cannes and the city
authorities for working so hard
to ensure this week goes ahead
as close to normal as possible.
While our business goes on, this
tragic event saw heart-breaking
loss of life and our thoughts are
very much with those families
affected this week.
As ever, we have a packed agenda
for you, commencing with a
programme of sporting activities
on Sunday morning. I hope you
have all registered for one of our
three hugely popular events: The
TFWA Charity Run, the Prodigious
Pétanque Tournament, or the
Golf Tournament. As last year,
the TFWA Charity Run is in aid
of TFWA Care, where runners/
joggers/walkers will set a pace
along the Croisette to raise money
for many great causes. The revised
format means that participants
can compete as individuals, or in
teams, for a €15 donation. Each
lap is 1.5km, and participants can
run (or walk!) as many laps as they
feel like in the allotted time. If you
haven’t registered, then I hope you
will come down to the Croisette at
08:30 to cheer on those taking part.
The Prodigious Pétanque Tournament will accommodate up to 100
players this year, and promises to
be both challenging and fun. Lunch
will be provided at the Beach of
L’Ecrin; for those who have registered, please make sure you are at
the Marriott Hotel by 09:15 – I look
forward to hearing all about it.
The traditional Golf Tournament,
now in its 29th year, and sponsored
and organised by Gebr. Heinemann
and Estée Lauder, will take place
on one of the Côte d’Azur’s finest
courses. With a spectacular
selection of prizes at stake, I wish
all those playing bonne chance!
Then it’s tickets ready for the
Opening Cocktail on Sunday
evening. The Carlton will once again
host us, and I wish you all an enjoyable evening. It’s one of my favourite
events for meeting old friends and
making new acquaintances.
A reminder that the exhibition will
be opening at 12:00 on Monday
after what promises to be a very
engaging and worthwhile conference; I urge you all to attend this
year, arriving in good time to
secure a seat. We’re expecting
a large audience! With former
Mayor of New York City Rudy
Giuliani, and Peter Long, Joint
CEO of TUI Group, following my
own state of the industry address,
it promises to be a compelling
morning. More detail is provided
in this issue of the Daily.
At 12:00 the doors will open to our
biggest exhibition yet; navigating
this space can be daunting, so
every year we endeavour to provide
services that will help make
your visit as effective as possible
– including the much-appreciated
interactive directional screens
kindly provided by official digital
partner JCDecaux. The TFWA
Lounge on Level 3 is open to TFWA
members and buyers with full
delegate status; offering a dedicated
concierge service, internet, private

The Market Watch: South
Korea workshop will focus on the
world’s largest single duty free & travel
retail market. According to Generation
Research, the industry in South Korea
registered sales growth of 22.8% last
year, giving it a global market share of
12.3%. Incheon International Airport is
estimated to be the world’s leading travel
retail location by sales.
South Korea’s travel retail landscape has
changed considerably this year with the
award of new concessions at Incheon and
the allocation of lucrative downtown duty
free licences in Seoul and Jeju. Despite
recent pressure on sales, South Korea
remains one of our industry’s most
vibrant retail environments, and the
Market Watch workshop will explore it in
full with the help of leading retailers and
experts on the market.

technology, crew incentivisation and product

TFWA’s provision of detailed, actionable
research studies has long been one of the
Association’s key services to its members. Over
the past year, TFWA Research has commissioned two major series of reports: the TFWA
Airport Insight Series, conducted by M1nd-set,
and the recent series of TFWA Category Reports,
in partnership with Counter Intelligence Retail.
For the first time TFWA is to host a one-hour
workshop to present highlights and key
findings of its most recent research studies,
which are all available free of charge to
members of the Association. All Cannes
delegates are welcome at the session, at
which handouts featuring summaries of the
research will be available.

Rossi D’Asiago distillery
made a name for itself

Staying a step ahead of the curve is part and parcel of being in the fashion and accessories business –
especially when it comes to the fast-paced travel retail channel. A selection of leading suppliers highlight
future category trends and how they are leveraging them to grow their business. By Faye Bartle.

“Airports and retailers are
now seeing the potential of
fashion as a growth driver
and are willing to give it
more space, but not all
of them understand how
complicated it can be to
manage as a category,”
said Marco Gadola, Head of
Travel Retail, Desigual (Bay
Village Bay Terrace 4).
“A collection is made up
of thousands of items with
different models, colours and
sizes. This, coupled with the
frequency of rotation caused
by new collections, makes it
extremely complex in terms of
SKU management. Ensuring the
proper mix in an airport environment, where space is limited,
adds another layer of complexity.
“I believe that category management is key to the future growth
of fashion in travel retail, so
it is vital for brands to deliver
category management solutions
to retailers that address
this complexity inherent to
our business. In my opinion,
selling a fashion brand like
Desigual is similar to selling
food – everything has an expiry
date. Nothing sits on the shelves
for very long. In fashion, a new
collection is released every six
months – some brands have
four to six releases every year
– and there is no holdover. Our
challenge is to minimise the
wastage with each collection
and maximise space profitability
through SKU rotation. We do this
by constantly monitoring the
stock on an individual SKU level,
substituting slow-movers and
replenishing bestsellers. This
can be a major drain on human
resources – and this is where IT
plays a part. The availability of
IT systems and data to provide
real-time insight into inventory
levels is incredibly important;
where IT systems are concerned,
the onus is on brands to provide
it, while data should come from
the retailers. Successes arising
from such a collaboration will
hopefully make retailers realise
the importance of treating the
fashion category as a priority
and giving it the space and
attention it deserves.
“I would like retailers to let us

them. We are the experts in what
is quite a challenging space,
so it makes sense for retailers
to embrace our expertise as
much as possible. As suppliers
we have access to category
data and trends, while retailers have insights on shopper
profile and sales data. If we can
create true partnerships with
retailers, where our IT systems
are properly integrated and
data sharing is encouraged,
then we can tackle all of these
challenges. The best partners
we have are the ones who are
open and transparent and willing
to listen to our guidance.
“We are currently working with a
number of retailers on category
management, and so far results
have been very positive. For
example, our collaboration
with World Duty Free Group
in the Canary Islands and the
Balearic Islands has boosted
sales growth by more than
25%. My advice to suppliers
who are looking to enhance
the proposition when it comes
to category management is to
take a proactive approach in
building the necessary trust in
their relationships with retailers.
Investing in a robust IT system is
also imperative for providing the
right visibility on the sell-out and
enabling proper management of
reorders during the seasons.”

buy a large bag, so a mini bag

Small leather goods are not
only displayed in counters
anymore, but they become the
protagonists together with the
bags. We are now offering lots
of functionalities for wallets
with different materials, colours
and details, and adapted to suit
various markets.
“It’s more than just about wallets,
too. Asian customers are currently
buying lots of wristlets and mini
bags, for instance, and I am sure
this category will increase its
share rapidly if well developed in
terms of design and functionality,
and well represented in the stores
and promoted.
“In addition, product training
is crucial. There are so many
different wallets and the sales
staff need to explain all the
details and highlight the differences between each style in just
a few minutes. When all these
elements come together, we can
start to explore the full potential
of the sub category.”

much more cheaply abroad,

When the travel retail
channel was born, the
popularity with the
travelling consumer of
a comparatively small
number of categories, and
the pioneering products
within them, served as the
foundation of an industry
that would flourish in the
decades that followed.
The tobacco, wines and spirits
sectors played a principal part
in the prodigious growth of
the duty free market, driving
the dynamism of the channel,
legitimising the airport retail
environment, and making
shopping a natural part of the
passenger experience. In recent
years though, as the channel
continues to evolve, other
categories are beginning to take
precedency, as the consumer
seeks out the diverse and the
unexpected in every product
segment. Overall market results
demonstrate that, today, the
fashion & accessories sector has
overtaken tobacco, outpacing
the once dominant category
in sales volume by 15% – an
increase indicative of the change
in direction that is taking place

Within the thriving fashion &
accessories sector, perhaps
the most remarkable story of
success belongs to sunglasses.
According to Generation travel
retail research, total sunglasses
sales in the duty free sector
have more than doubled over
the past five years, reaching
more than US$1.75 billion in
2014. The category has emerged
as a key growth driver for many
airports and retailers, and it is
thanks to the innovatory and
unprecedented strategies of its
trailblazing brands, and their
collaborative pursuit of the ideal
retail environment, that the
purchase of optics is increasingly a primary consideration
for passengers.
A PIONEERING APPROACH
In 2007 sunglasses sales were
a mere US$777 million in the
duty free channel. It was a
time in which the category was
severely under-represented,

The growth of the eyewear category has been one of
the great success stories of duty free in recent times –
with a significant share of its growth the result of the
pioneering approach of the category’s trailblazing
brands. Its leading companies explained to Amy Hanna
that the future of the sunglasses sector is bright.

Moss as the face of its campaign, as she perfectly embraced the brand’s identity.

2007 Luxottica Group (Riviera
Village RG8) established its
dedicated travel retail division,
having identified the market as
a huge growth opportunity for
its premium, luxury and sports
eyewear brands. Determined to
take the leadership role in the
sunglasses sector, in 2008 it
launched its pioneering category
management programme, and
with it a clear vision – to double
the size of the sunglasses
segment within five years, and to
break into the top 10 categories

from a starting position of
number 16.
“We saw sunglasses as the
perfect category for travel
retail,” explained Francis Gros,
Head of Global Channels, Luxottica – the group behind iconic
names in sunglasses such as
retailer Sunglass Hut. “Providing
entry level into luxury brands,
a future-proof category without
legislative threats, constantly
refreshed assortments, and a
product that is itself inherently
related to travel.”
Luxottica has invested
significantly in its category
management programme ever
since, establishing workshops,
awards and regional activities,
as well as commissioning
bespoke traveller research.
“We’re delighted with the
evolution of this platform, which
quickly moved from a Luxottica
event to a collaborative approach
from all major suppliers in our
category, including Marcolin,
De Rigo, Marchon, Maui Jim,
and Safilo,” Gros explained.
“Unique in the industry,
the initiative involves all six
companies working together
to share insights, commission

best practices in our category,
and to promote and drive the
growth of the category pie.”
The 7th Sunglasses Category
Workshop & Awards will take
place at TFWA World Exhibition
& Conference on 20 October,
and with new categories and
more awards, it will recognise
outstanding retailers of all sizes
within the sector.
In the light of its ongoing
success, Luxottica has re-established its targets for sustained
growth towards what Generation
has forecast could be a US$7.85
billion category by 2025. “We
will not relent in our pursuit
of perfection for the category.
Travel retail can be the expert
channel for buying sunglasses,”
Gros stressed, explaining that
Luxottica has a number of key
strategies for sustained growth –
including significant investment
in dedicated travel retail training
teams in each region. Its multiformatting approach is also a
pivotal focus. Revolving around
the execution of the sunglasses
category in different formats at
different stages in the passenger
journey through an airport,
targeting varying shopper needs

key to maximising sales in travel
retail, by unlocking the bigger,
better spaces and visibility
that the sunglasses category
deserves. “Luxottica Travel
Retail recognises its responsibility as the category-leader in

focused on supporting, encouraging and driving growth in the

A MARKET RICH IN
POTENTIAL
The duty free channel bears
a wealth of opportunity for
eyewear brands. Sunglasses
have terrific potential in travel
retail in all regions, and the
category is growing faster
than the traditional duty free
categories globally. They are
low to mid-price products;
they provide a low threshold
entry point to elite fashion
brands; there are styles to
suit all ages, cultures and
genders; and they are perfect
as impulse and gift purchases.

recorded another prosperous
year across all markets – even
better than the category as
a whole – something which
reflects, Marks said, the growing
interest in and customer
sensitivity to the finer aspects
of sunglasses purchase, factors
such as polarisation and eye
protection, as well as fashion.
“The challenge,” he said, “is
getting sufficient space to
display them properly, ideally
in the case of Maui Jim with a
polage screen to demonstrate
their polarised lenses.”
Maui Jim’s state-of-the-art
polarised lenses provide
remarkable clarity and outstanding colour definition – a coveted
feature, but a concept that is
difficult to convey. The company
uses creative and artistic advertising to highlight the unique
selling points of its products
but, in essence, its strategy is to
get consumers to try Maui Jims
for the first time, because once
tried they are rarely rejected.
“People notice the difference
immediately.” The brand hopes
to unveil its new 48-piece display
tower at TFWA World Exhibition
& Conference, which has mirrors
and polage screen to demonstrate the quality of the lenses.
“It is dressed with the same
artistic marketing messages
as our advertising campaign,
communicating with humour the
way our lenses bring out colours
and remove glare,” Marks said.

unit consistently out-performs
the growth of Luxottica Group,
while Silhouette’s (Riviera
Village RE9) 15-year presence
in the channel has seen travel

operations, meanwhile, began
10 years ago, and have become
an important asset to the
company, serving to strengthen
and reinforce its international

The Italian luxury fashion house
will launch its first eyewear
collection at TFWA World
Exhibition & Conference this
year in a significant debut that
represents also a new challenge
for the company. “This choice
is a further step in our lifestyle
idea and philosophy, a contribution to the strengthening of our
brand identity and heritage. Our
challenge is to be part of this
market in a very fast and international way,” Etro explained.

sunglasses for different needs
and purposes – for driving, for
sports or for the beach; a casual
pair for everyday or a luxury pair
for special events. The result is
personal collections spanning
three or four pairs of sunglasses
at any one time – often from
different brands – and featuring very different styles. This
is a consumer habit that is
proving very prosperous for the
category, and Silhouette has
cited a number of further trends
that are impacting upon the
sector, and that have influenced
its new releases and travel
exclusive products. It explained
that the line between sport
and lifestyle sunglasses has
become less distinct, seeing the
athletic not only asking for the
best performance, but also for
fashionable design, while fashion
followers seek stylish pairs
for comfy all-day use and an
active lifestyle – something that
is reflected in the new adidas
wildcharge and adidas whipstart
ranges, being showcased by
Silhouette in Cannes. Customers are also looking more
and more for mirror lenses,
and superior mirrored lenses
are being made available this
season for Silhouette and adidas
eyewear. Defined, minimalist
design, meanwhile, has become
a clear focal point, and within
its product range Silhouette has

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
The unwavering success of the
burgeoning sunglasses category,
though, is not protected from
the challenges to demand
that face the entire duty free
industry. The slowing growth in
Asia with cutbacks in Chinese
consumption, political unrest
in the Middle East, a decline in
Russian spending, and currency
issues in markets such as Brazil
– a significant market for the
sector, are all impacting upon
category sales. The answer,
Luxottica’s Gros explained, is
that travel retail has to evolve
from being a “channel of
experts” to an “expert channel”
– “the best retail channel not
in our eyes, but in the eyes of
the consumer”. “To achieve
this, we need to ‘Get REAL’:
Stay Relevant, focus on the
Experiential, be Avant-garde,
and provide Leadership. Each
Trinity stakeholder has a
different responsibility and role
to play in order to make travel
retail REAL.”
Unsurprisingly, Luxottica
objectives in the channel are
clear-cut, and all encompassing: “Growth, growth, growth.
Supported by continued
investments in all areas of the
business, including training,
promotions and permanent
in-store environments, we plan
to keep encouraging airports
and retailers to adopt a multiformatting approach and grow
the overall sunglasses category
pie,” Gros said.
