Minnesota’s Family Friendly City! Glencoe, MN Relocation Guide Featuring Businesses and Organizations Who are Members of the Chamber of Commerce ww w. gwlwew.ngcl eon ceo ecc hha mabm e r. b c oe m r. c o m Welcome to Glencoe! I want to be the first to welcome you to the Glencoe area. I hope this publication will provide information about the city that meets your recreational, educational, and business needs. I am very proud to serve as the Mayor of Glencoe. In 2005, we celebrated our 150th birthday. Glencoe is proud of its strong rural heritage and we look forward to a great future. We are fortunate to feature our beautiful parks, outdoor aquatic center and the Panther Field House for recreation and fitness. We are also fortunate to have a great school district, a regional medical center: Glencoe Regional Health Services, the seat of government for McLeod County and a vibrant business community with many retail, service and manufacturing businesses. Seneca Foods, Telex, Starkey Labs, and Miller Manufacturing are just some of the industries we have as employers. Their products are shipped worldwide making Glencoe a vital part of the global marketplace and economy. My wife and I moved to Glencoe in 1985. We felt that a community like Glencoe would make a great place to raise a family. We have never regretted that decision. If you will be a resident of Glencoe, I hope this guide will answer many of your questions. Glencoe is a great community. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Sincerely, Randy Wilson Glencoe Mayor w w w. g l e n c o e c h a m b e r. c o m Table of Contents Introduction.........................................................................................................2 Location..............................................................................................................4 History.................................................................................................................5 Demographics.....................................................................................................6 Employment........................................................................................................7 Lodging and Dining............................................................................................8 Travel Amenities.................................................................................................9 Finding a Home..................................................................................................10 New Developments.....................................pending...........................................11 Recreation...........................................................................................................12 Health Care/Life Care/Therapeutic Services......................................................14 Education............................................................................................................15 Family Resources................................................................................................18 Contact Information............................................................................................19 Business Directory..............................................................................................20 w w w. g l e n c o e c h a m b e r. c o m Location Glencoe is conveniently situated between large metropolitan areas, quaint rural cities and charming agricultural landscapes. Not until the early summer of 1855 was the first permanent white settlement made in McLeod County. Glencoe, named for its resemblance to a valley in Scotland, was the first city to be offiically founded by settlers in McLeod County. At that time the nearest known neighbors were thirty miles away, leaving settlers and businesses to travel many miles by wagon for supplies to Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Even in these hard times, the first known business in Glencoe was started in 1855, followed by the construction of the creamery in 1894, the opening of the telephone company in 1897, the beginning of Glencoe Brewing Company in 1901, and the dedication of the Glencoe Library in 1904. In the spirit of the early settlers and businesses, Glencoe continues to be characterized by hard-working members of the community, growing businesses and plans for a bright future! w w w. g l e n c o e c h a m b e r. c o m Demographics Glencoe is a growing, diverse community.
