Y O U ARIZONA B E L O N G H E R E ! GVR NOW! July 2016 | Vol. 2, Num. 7 www.gvrec.org GVR INFORMATION FOR YOU, ABOUT YOU Construction Underway for New Abrego North Pool and Spa! — KENT’S CORNER — Showing Our True Colors The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The ultimate measure of a man [person] is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.” The recent murder of nearly 50 innocents and severe injury of many more in an Orlando establishment by a hate-filled individual was a horrific act that is incomprehensible to fathom in a civilized society. The outpouring of condolences and heartfelt prayers for the victims and their families and friends is moving. There is so much hurt and pain to be healed. On the political front, the 2016 presidential elec- Kent J. Blumenthal, Ph.D., CAE, CEO, Green Valley Recreation, Inc. tion has become supercharged, with candidates trading barbs and stirring up controversy with their attacks and comments. Even the Orlando tragedy has become rife with (cont. pg. 2) GREEN VALLEY RECREATION, INC. PROVIDING RECREATIONAL, SOCIAL AND LEISURE EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES THAT ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF OUR MEMBERS’ LIVES. Doggone Good Time GVR hosts ‘Paws in Pool’ on Aug. 6 as fundraising event for GVR Foundation Join GVR for our August 6 “Paws in the Pool” fundraising event supporting the GVR Foundation beginning at 7 am on Saturday, Aug. 6! Your pup can enjoy a swim in GVR’s Madera Vista Center pool during this fun community event that will feature vendors and exhibitors, the Green Valley Fire District, a dog mascot, food for purchase, demonstrations, pet contests and more! The event is open to the public and spectators are welcome for a suggested freewill donation of $5. The fundraising event is being held before the pool is drained, replastered, sanitized and reopened for use by our human members in late August. The improvements at this center also include the addition of a sun awning along the southern side of the pool by the shuffleboard courts. Pre-registration is necessary for dogs to swim in the pool as times will be designated for small, large and mixed sized dogs. Dogs must be at least six months old, be licensed, wear a soft collar, and have current vaccinations, and owners will be required to sign a waiver. To register for the event, visit East, West, Canoa Hills or Las Campanas Centers. After much anticipation from GVR members and neighbors, the demolition of the failed Abrego North pool and its reconstruction began in earnest on Tuesday, May 31! The project contractor, Shasta Commercial & Olympic Division of Phoenix, in just two days has already demolished and removed the existing pool shell and decking since beginning its work. The estimated completion time for the project is 16 weeks, barring weather delays. GVR’s groundskeeping crew was busy transplanting landscaping plants from the area prior to ground breaking. To view progress of the pool project, check out the live ABN pool webcam on GVR’s website. (cont. pg. 3) 2 www.gvrec.org • July 2016 Kent’s Corner (cont. from page 1) political recriminations. There are heated debates between advocates of different political persuasions about hate crimes, gun control, race, and immigration. Some have even lead to violent protests. Will these strong personal beliefs about social and political issues spill over into Green Valley Recreation, Inc.’s centers to spark flashpoints among members? Though possible, I certainly hope it is improbable. These two events – the presidential election and the carnage in Orlando – raise a very important reminder about the need for tolerance and acceptance for all GVR leaders, staff, volunteers and members. Our only intolerance is discrimination against individuals who may be different from us! To its credit in November 2015, the GVR Board of Directors adopted a Non-Discrimination Policy and statement developed and recommended by the Board Affairs Committee (Reference GVR’s Corporate Policy Manual online at www. gvrec.org): “It is the policy of Green Valley Recreation, Inc. to treat all people with dignity, respect and equality regardless of age, race, color, ancestry, country of origin, disability, ethnicity, marital status, family status, veteran status, gender, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. Long-standing Board-approved rules in CPM Section IV – Facility Use – further describes how our private corporation provides for freedom of speech and assembly on GVR property. GVR may deny use is there is “reasonable concern that the individual or group is involved in discriminatory behavior based on sex, age, race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious and political opinions.” The policy also allows space to be rented for political meetings and events, but prohibits signage advocating a position on political issues or candidates except in the meeting area during the event. The intent is to keep GVR political neutral to prevent and reduce conflict. These policies help guard against harassment, bullying, and the distribution of unapproved literature that may be highly inflammatory and likely to create conflicts and disrupt operations. Simply put, GVR treats people with respect and fairness, regardless of differences, but does not tolerate any employee, volunteer, member or guest being harassed or discriminated against based on who they are or what they believe. GVR will actively enforce these policies to maintain the cooperative, harmonious and civil environment for everyone. Most of us come from different geographic regions, cultures and have our own values and beliefs systems. That’s the beauty of diversity. We have opportunity for others to share with us diverse perspectives, and we can actually learn from these different views. I would hope that at the very least we understand that the other person’s values and believes are just as important as our own. So as we look forward to America’s Independence Day holiday, let’s pause to celebrate the freedoms that allow for great diversity of beliefs and opinions but also demand tolerance. As Dr. King suggests, let us all show our true colors in these troubled times, whether they’re “Red, White & Blue,” “Rainbow” or dipped in chocolate with sprinkles on top. Through mutual respect and understanding, we are a stronger and better organization and community. Kick off your holiday weekend by joining GVR for our Grand Re-opening celebration of the Canoa Ranch pool and spa on Friday, July 1! The pool and spa work has been slightly delayed due to unexpected delays in the contractor receiving supplies, but will be open just in time for the July 4th holiday weekend! The project involves demolishing and removal of the old decking, which was cracking and crumbling due to a failure of the top coating of the deck, and replacing it with new two-toned decking. The pool also will have an additional forth swimming lane to meet demand for lap lanes during peak use. Additional improvements at Canoa Ranch include repainting of the locker rooms, installation of new grab rails, powder-coating of bench pedestals, and installation of new shower heads in the locker rooms. GREEN VALLEY 516 E. Whitehouse Canyon #100 GVR has scheduled numerous repair and improvement projects over the summer months to keep our facilities in top notch condition. Sometimes these projects require an area be unoccupied and a partial facility closure. In order to minimize the inconvenience to members, GVR has scheduled partial closures so that only the area scheduled for maintenance is closed. For a complete and updated list of summer center maintenance projects and closures, visit the home page of GVR’s website and click on Construction Updates. STRONG A s k a b out mont hl y COS ME TIC SPEC IALS Patricia Ferrer, PA-C Four of GVR’s employees sacrificed their Memorial Day to participate in the Carry the Load event in Sahuarita, a fundraiser that benefits the families of injured and fallen military, law enforcement, firefighting and rescue personnel. GVR employees who walked in the event included Ashley Coggins (5 miles), Elizabeth Hernandez (5 miles), Gary Wick (5 miles) and Boyd Faulknor (15 miles with a 20 lb. pack). This is the second year that Faulknor and Coggins have worked in the event. “My wife is a disabled veteran, I served, and most people I know served. I have family members in every branch of the military and some police officers,” Faulknor said. “From a personal experience with friends and family, I know what it takes to serve and what these people sacrifice.” Summer Center Maintenance Closures 6 around GVR Miller, Bravo Named Employees of the Month Facility Custodians Tom Miller and Whitney Bravo have been named Employees of the Month for May and June, respectively. Assigned to Canoa Ranch Center, Miller cares very much Miller about his responsibilities, greeting members and serving as a valuable good-will ambassador for GVR. In fact, many members won’t begin their exercise in the fitness room or swimming pool until they’ve had a chance to say “hi” to Miller first. Miller has been a GVR custodian since January 2007, and has served at many centers. Over the past two years, several members approached senior staff to tell them what a wonderful job Miller does in keeping Canoa Ranch center looking spic ‘n’ span. In fact, last summer when custodial staff were rotated among various GVR centers for cross-training, several members asked when Miller would be back to Canoa Ranch as he was sorely missed. He is always conscientious Bravo and thorough. These positive attributes are also observed by our members. Bravo has a great attitude and her teamwork is demonstrated through her actions. She is very caring and professional when dealing with difficult situations. Her cleaning and attention to detail are excellent and she has been praised by other staff for being a great trainer and role model. Bravo consistently takes initiative in helping members and her coworkers. Congratulations to Tom and Whitney, and thank you for all of your hard work in service to our members! GVR Endorses GVFD’s New Urgent Medical Services Program The GVR Board of Directors has endorsed a new Fire-based Urgent Medical Service (FBUMS) introduced by the Green Valley Fire District. The new service sends a family nurse practitioner(NP) out to area residents’ homes to assist Emergency Medical crews in handling non-emergent, urgent care type calls. A GVFD captain on the scene can request the nurse practitioner to respond with a dedicated FBUMS vehicle directly to your home (if you don’t need to be transported to 428-0550 to schedule an appointment directly without having to contact 911. If you have an urgent medical need and you can’t get in to see your doctor, don’t have a primary care physician, or can’t get to urgent care the Emergency Room) due to a mobility issue and request to be seen by or other limitation, call the NP.
