Ducey The Sweet, Sweet Sounds of Progress! By Kent J. Blumenthal, Ph.D., CAE CEO, Green Valley Recreation, Inc. While exercising in the Canoa Ranch Center fitness room during a recent lunchtime break, I asked Tom Miller, a custodian and GVR’s Employee of the Month for May 2016, “What do you call that horrendous sound coming from the pool area?” Tom didn’t hesitate. “Progress.” The loud racket in the closed-off indoor swimming pool area came from jackhammers at work removing (cont. pg. 2) GREEN VALLEY RECREATION, INC. PROVIDING RECREATIONAL, SOCIAL AND LEISURE EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES THAT ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF OUR MEMBERS’ LIVES. GVR Pickleball Club Named ‘Best of the Best’ by ideal-LIVING Magazine T he national active adult retirement magazine, ideal-LIVING, has named Green Valley Recreation, Inc.’s Pickleball Club as the “Best of the Best” in its Summer 2016 edition to be published in June. The honorees also will be revealed on the magazine’s website at www.ideal-LIVING.com. “We are excited about receiving this designation,” said GVR CEO Kent J. Blumenthal, Ph.D., CAE, “because it validates GVR’s vision of becoming the destination of choice for active adults and retirees. GVR offers recreational amenities that are (cont. pg. 3) Canoa Ranch Pool Renovations Underway Renovations and repairs to the Canoa Ranch Center pool and deck began in early May. Doug Ducey on May 11 signed House Bill 2592, which amends state laws to allow nonprofit organizations with memberships to conduct electronic balloting. The new law will take effect in 90 days, and paves the way for GVR and other nonprofits to conduct online balloting. Initiated by GVR and introduced by Rep. Chris Ackerley (R-Sahuarita) in February, the bill moved fairly quickly through state House and Senate with little or no opposition. Electronic balloting could save GVR up to $20,000 annually by not having to print, assemble and mail paper ballots. The legislation was endorsed and supported by GVR, the Greater Green Valley Community Foundation, the Green Valley Council, the Community Associations Institute Legislative Action Committee and the Green Valley/Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce. 2 CONTACT GVR Website: www.gvrec.org If you would like to contact any member of the GVR staff, please call (520) 625-3440 and enter the appropriate extension number. Hundreds of nominations were submitted to ideal-LIVING earlier this year for 40 categories of recognition. A special editorial committee assembled by the publication reviewed the qualifications of each nominee and selected the winners. GVR’s Pickleball Club was selected as “Best of the Best” in its category. Coincidentally, the GVR Pickleball Club also celebrates its 10-year anniversary as a GVR club in June. Chartered in 2006 with just 38 members, the club’s membership has swelled to 696 members due to the exploding popularity of the sport among active adults. One of 60+ GVR-recognized clubs, Pickleball Club members play on GVR’s 11 pickleball courts located at Canoa Ranch and East Centers. The club also manages the Pickleball Tournament held in conjunction with the annual GVR Foundation’s Southern Arizona Senior Games that take place during the entire month of March in Green Valley. The games feature more than 30 competitions for active adults over age 50 and draws over 1,200 participants and volunteers. GVR Pickleball Club President Jeff Harrell said he’s surprised and elated at the honor. “We have such a welcoming, social and friendly club with nearly 700 members here in Green Valley. Our club members range from beginner novice to highly skilled instructors, but there is such great camaraderie, love of the sport, and willingness to teach Renovations repair the indoor pool. Assigned to Canoa Ranch Center, Miller cares very much about his responsibilities, greeting members and serving as a valuable good-will ambassador for GVR. In fact, many members won’t begin their exercise in the fitness room or swimming pool until they’ve had a time to say “hi” to Miller first. He has been a GVR custodian since January 2007 and has served at many centers. Over the past two years, several members approached senior staff to tell them what a wonderful job Miller does in keeping Canoa Ranch center looking spic ‘n span. In fact, last summer when custodial staff were rotated among various GVR centers for cross-training, several members asked when Miller would be back to Canoa Ranch as he was sorely Tom Miller, Employee of the Month for May, is joined by CEO Kent Blumenthal. missed. The Engage! program is designed to help members live a longer, healthier and more independent lifestyle, and include a Senior Lunch Program, discounted Adult Day Services at Casa Community, and a free class focusing on aging well at any stage of life. The next class is at 10 am Wednesday, June 8 at Desert Hills Center Auditorium, and is free and open to the community. In early May, GVR and Casa also mailed information about the Engage! program along with a questionnaire to approximately 2,300 GVR members. If you received one, please complete and return it in the postage-paid envelope or drop it off at any staffed GVR centers. For more information about the Engage! Program or to register for the next class, contact Project Coordinator Ashley Coggins at (520) 449-8776 or [email protected]. GVR to Conduct Online Communications Survey in July Engage! Program Project Coordinator Ashley Coggins with Casa Adult Day Services participant, Darla. GVR is conducting an online survey in July to help us evaluate two of our primary communication tools, the weekly email eBlast (GVR Update!) and the monthly printed GVR Now! special section newsletter that appears in the Green Valley News. We are interested in your input to evaluate the perceived value and effectiveness of each of these in sharing news and information about GVR with members and the greater Green Valley community. You may take the survey online by visiting a link, or you may pick up a paper survey at any major staffed center beginning July 15. The survey takes less than a couple of minutes to complete and provides us with helpful information. By completing and submitting your survey, you will be entered into a random drawing for 2 tickets to an upcoming GVR performance! GVR will pick five lucky winners! FRIENDS IN DEED 301 W. Monsoon season is June 15 through the end of September, and storms peak during July and August. GVR follows the guidelines provided by the National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI) to determine when to close pools and spas. GVR will close pools and spas when it is determined that their use presents a danger. NLSI guidelines state that pools/spas will be evacuated before lightning is five miles away and activities suspended until 30 minutes after the last observed thunder or lightning. Water is an excellent conductive of electricity and lightning can strike up to 30 miles away! Lightning can be deadly and the safety of our members, guests and employees is our first priority. SAFETY C O R N E R GVR Summer Pool Hours and Use Those using GVR’s facilities should be aware of weather at all times and take precautions when lightning is in the vicinity by immediately exiting indoor and outdoor pools, spas and showers. Staff has been trained to clear pools and spas of occupants at the first sight of lightning, no matter how far away it appears. GVR has an internal alert system to notify all employees when pools are closing due to severe weather and when they are reopened. When lightning is detected, all GVR pools will be closed. The GVR Pickleball Club will celebrate its 10th year anniversary this month. The Club was chartered in 2006 with 38 members who played on one court at GVR’s East Center. The court had previously been used for paddle tennis, volleyball and basketball. Due to the popularity of the sport, GVR in 2009 built two additional courts at East Center, and then four more courts at Canoa Ranch Center in 2012. Then in August 2015, GVR opened four new lit courts for day and evening play at East Center. GVR Pickleball players now have 11 dedicated courts, and the GVR Pickleball Club membership has nearly 700 members and is growing. The game of pickleball was created over 50 years ago in the state of Washington. The court is the size of a badminton court. The paddle looks like an oversized ping pong paddle and the game uses a whiffle ball. The smaller court makes the game easier on the body, but it still requires quick reactions. Pickleball is a wonderful way to get outside, get a good MAY 27 DIAMOND CENTER | SAHUARITA DOORS 7PM | SHOW 8PM www.gvrec.org • June 2016 GVR Pickleball Club Celebrates 10th Anniversary workout and have fun at the same time with new friends. The best way to learn about pickleball is to stop by the courts at Canoa Ranch or East Center any morning, find a comfortable seat in the bleachers and watch the action. No doubt someone waiting to play will explain the game to you and how we all wait for our turn to play. Games take about 10 to 15 minutes and when the game is done the players leave the court and the next group of players enters. Paddles are lined up so we know who’s up next to play! The club also offers classes through GVR’s leisure learning program as well as assisted play. Club members are instructors for the GVR Pickleball 101, 201 and 202 classes, and assisted play is offered at 4 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at East Center. This is for newbies that are just learning the basics of the game and need to get experience on the court with coaches - paddles are supplied! We also offer Skills and Drills. The club has purchased a hitting wall and ball machine for players that want to improve their game. Because the sport is so popular and the club so large, it schedules court time so that all GVR pickleball players have an equal opportunity to play. Each day some court time is assigned for “skill level” play for each group – beginners, intermediate and advanced players.
