The Captain`s Journal - Chattahoochee Valley Community College
The Captain’s Journal A publication by Chattahoochee Valley Community College Vol. 1 Issue 4 - May 2015 CVCC Family and Friends, April was filled with several campus events, including our talent show and annual arts event. CVCC was fortunate to have our homecoming queen, Lauren Kathryn Cross, speak to over 2,500 people at ACCS Day where 100 of our own faculty, staff and students gathered to celebrate National Community College Month. Speaking of celebration, April led right into May for a wonderful awards and honors season. It was concluded by our ADN and CNA pinning and a beautiful graduation ceremony. There have been numerous events to honor our students. I am always inspired to hear our student success stories from All-Alabama, Phi Theta Kappa, Academic Awards and more! I’m also excited that we established an awards night to recognize our amazing student athletes. All of these great events make me proud to be part of CVCC. We will not stop anytime soon; we will finish the month strong and prepare for an excellent summer semester. As staff and faculty, we will work hard every day to ensure our tradition of excellence stays strong. I wish you all a wonderful and safe summer; take time to recharge and energize for what lies ahead. Sincerely, Valerie A. Richardson Dr. Valerie A. Besides her accounting classes that she loved while pursuing her A.A.S. in Business: Accounting, she became quite fond of world literature. She said, “My favorite class besides accounting was world literature because it introduced me to amazing books and thoughts that I would not have considered to have read. I enjoyed the in-class discussions, which opened a whole new world to me. Furthermore, it has always been interesting to me to learn about different opinions of others.” When asked what she would say to encourage her peers at CVCC, she stated, “Everything you do, you do for yourself! So if you really want to improve your situation, you need to be reliable, work hard, and never give up. Good time management is also an important part to stay ahead of deadlines and other responsibilities.” Lisa Roy, a native of Hulbert, Oklahoma, enrolled at CVCC seeking a degree, but instead found her passion for math. She began in developmental math but excelled through the courses and eventually became a math tutor. In addition to her math courses, she enjoyed Dr. McClanahan’s history course because the class became an educational getaway for her. When asked what she would say to encourage her peers at CVCC, she said, “they should do it for themselves and no one else. I had a fellow classmate say to me that I am just an overachiever, and that they were never brought up that way. To be honest, I was never brought up that way either. I just realized that there is a whole world that the instructors and the institution are trying to share with you.” After all you do to pay for the classes, do not go into a class with a bad attitude; go in there thinking: ‘I could possibly learn something today.’ I try to do that with EVERY subject I come across, even the ones I hate. Attitude is 90% of the battle, and a wise man once told me that the subject he taught was only the vehicle; learning was the actual journey. I do believe that we only live once, and that you have decided to go to CVCC to better yourself, so you might as well enjoy it and learn as much as you possibly can.” Congratulations, Lady Pirates! It was an exciting season for the Lady Pirates who set a new record for wins with 34 as they finished the season 34-18.
