Weekday classes are held Tuesday - Thursday and are available during the summer. This course includes classroom and on-motorcycle instruction. Riders will learn basic skills of motorcycle operation and safe riding strategies under controlled range condition. The BRC program provides motorcycles (none larger than 500 cc), helmets and textbook for each rider. Successful completion of the course prepares the rider for state licensing with an exemption in the skills and knowledge test at the DMV. Extended Basic Rider: Designed for students who have completed the Basic Rider Course (successful or not) and would like more individualized instruction. The class ratio of student to instructor is 3:1.This course is scheduled on a demand basis and will be held on two weekday evenings starting in May and will be available until August. Class fee is $ 100.00 per person. Basic Rider 2: BRC2 includes a brief review of basic skills, critical advanced turning, braking skills, counter steering, and obstacle avoidance. This class is designed to assist riders in improving their skills and is taught on Saturdays or Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students will need street-legal motorcycle, helmet, valid driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement, and proof of insurance on the motorcycle. Class fee is $60 per person. Advanced Rider: ARC consists of approximately 3 ½ hours of classroom activities and 4 ½ hours of riding. This class is taught on Saturdays or Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will need street-legal motorcycle, helmet, valid driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement, and proof of insurance on the motorcycle. There is no formal skills test but a course assessment will be administered. Class fee is $ 70 per person. Sidecar/Trike Course: Sidecar/Trike Education Program (S/TEP) is designed to teach riders the skills necessary to safely operate a three-wheel vehicle on the street, even if one has never ridden any kind of motorcycle. The 16hour course takes the rider through the basics of motorcycle operation (controls are much the same as a two-wheel motorcycle), effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as other safe riding strategies. Sidecar units and Trikes are available for use on Saturday and Sunday but riders are encouraged to bring their own Sidecar/Trike for use on Sunday. Those renewing a license must take continuing education in their respective profession. Plumbers, HVAC technicians and electricians must take three hours of continuing education in their field. Gas Fitters must take on hour; this one-hour training course for gas fitters is intended for journeyman and master gas fitters, liquefied petroleum gas fitters and natural gas fitters. This course covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, impact on the job, general use and special equipment included in the respective codes. (Note: The 4HR Installation Class as noted below is included in the 40 HR class.) Objective areas: Introduction to cross-connections; conditions leading to backflow; prevention of cross-connection; cross-connection program components; installation of backflow devices inside buildings; outside buildings; and in flood areas; codes and ordinances; and use of test kits and wet lab. 4 HR Installation Class: $99 In accordance with 18 VAC 50-22-20 and 18 VAC 50-22-30, the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) requires irrigation contractors (ISC), heavy highway (H/H) contractors and fire sprinkler contractors (SPC) to attend a class approved by the Board on backflow prevention assemblies (BPA’s) installation before they are allowed to install BPA’s. A state backflow prevention device worker certification does not allow contractors in these specialties to install BPA’s. Once the certification has been obtained, successful attendees will be authorized to install BPA’s, but only in their specific contractor designation. (IE: ISC install BPA’s in irrigation systems and H/H in heavy highway applications; etc.). Course provides 4 hours of instruction covering theory of backflow and math calculations; thermal expansion & venturi effect; types of devices/assemblies & applications; 2012 Virginia plumbing code; special considerations; installation of backflow preventers; freeze protection; lawn irrigation systems; and discussion questions.
