PAWNOGRAPHY:
The Art of Chess
This is a museum poster
designed to attract people
to the traveling Art of
Chess exhibit, featuring
in the Victoria & Albert
Museum in London.
On the back of this
poster, there is a pattern
for making the papercraft
pawn on the front. Those
who buy the poster and
assemble their own pawn
get free admission to the
exhibit as well as add to a
global collection of other
decorated pawns.
The size of the poster is
22 in x 33 in. The poster
would be available in
the gift shop a couple of
weeks before the exhibit
would open.
This piece won Best in
Student Advertising at
the Graphex 40 Awards,
hosted by the Art Directors
Club of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

IT’S THE LAW:
Book Illustration
For this illustration, I
derived inspiration from
several defunct laws that
are still on the books in
the United States, but are
largely ignored.
This law stated that
no chickens could be
purchased after 6 pm
without consent of the
sheriff. I tried to imagine
why this law would be put
in place, and came up with
this creepy huckster. He
appears to spend too much
time around chickens.

IT’S THE LAW:
Book Illustration
The second illustration
in this book features an
obscure law in Michigan
that requires all bikinis to
be inspected before a
person can go bathing in
a public area.

GLOBAL EXPANSION:
Xerox Annual
Report Illustration
This is a vector illustration
that works on a limited
color scheme that would be
used throughout the annual
report. My inspiration was
Xerox’s misison statement to
provide useful services for
anyone’s job, no matter how
unique or unconventional.

HOAX: Book Jacket
The task was to create a
book and model a jacket
for that book. I chose to
invent a catalog of stories
about cryptozoology that
I had never read before.
I wish this book was real
because I enjoy cryptids
but want to hear new
stories about them.
The cover features a
collage of crazy tabloid
headlines masked with a
vector shape, then shaded
with more vectors. The
particular challenge of
this piece lay in making
photographic (raster)
images combine with my
vector illustrations.

SELF-PROMOTION:
Resume
This resume comes inside
of a specially-designed
square envelope, with
a cover letter and my
business card.
I wanted a symbol that
worked well lifesize, and
would fool people into
thinking it was real. For the
resume, the bee is about
twice its normal size so that
prospective employers can
see all of the tiny details I
put into it.

SUMERIAN
PARTRIDGE:
Christmas Card Illustration
This set of Christmas cards
had two themes. The first
was the classic Christmas
carol, “The Twelve Days
of Christmas.” The second
was a progression through
art history. These cards
were designed to be sold
at the Boston Museum
of Fine Arts, so I derived
inspiration from their
permanent collection.
The earliest pieces of
artwork that the Boston
MFA has in its collection
are from ancient Babylon,
so I took cues from their
bas relief sculptures for the
overall look and feel of this
illustration.

EGYPTIAN
TURTLEDOVES:
Christmas Card Illustration
The period of art history
represented here is the
second in the series:
Egyptian. My style
was influenced here by
masterful Egyptian jewelery.

folded paper designs.

PAPER BASICS:
Multi-page Brochure
This is a thirty-page booklet
about how to select and
order the right kind of
paper from Mohawk
paper company. It was an
interesting challenge to take
my own photographs and
then create clean, simple
illustrations to match them.
