March 2016 Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, NY Robert J. Gomprecht, President Lauren’s Law Volume 56 Number 5 Chris Power, Principal is named after Albertus Magnus High School Sophomore, Lauren Shields. On Wednesday, February 24th the New York Senate voted unanimously to pass a four-year extension of Lauren’s Law to boost organ donations. This law was originally passed by the Legislature in 2012. Sen. David Carlucci, D-Clarkstown, Rockland County sponsored this bill. Lauren and her family were at the Capital in Albany when the bill was approved. The law requires individuals who apply for a driver’s license to complete the organ donor registry section of the application by selecting either “yes” or “skip this question.” The measure was changed again last November to require the state Department of Motor Vehicles to not process license applications that didn't have a completed donor registry section. Since then, Carlucci and advocates said the number of people signing up to be donors has skyrocketed. Sen. Winchell Tonianne Zottoli FROM THE OFFICE OF CAMPUS MINISTRY March is upon us and winter is almost done and as docile as this winter has been I’m, sure we are all ready for spring! Deep down we await that day when we will look out of our window and see the small but mighty crocus make its presence known and assure us that spring is on the way! Our faith journey during Lent provides us a similar assurance, the knowledge that after 40 days of prayer and fasting we will once again experience the joy of Easter! Since our last newsletter, our activities at Campus Ministry activities have continued to evolve and it is a blessing to share some of these events with you. Our sophomore class completed their Midnight Run and as always this proved to be a powerful experience for all involved. As one student reflected: “At every stop we had people who stood out in the freezing cold waiting for us. It made me feel good to give these people some warm food and some warm clothes on such a cold night. Every time we gave something to someone, we saw how grateful they were for the things they had, though they had so little. Sometimes we had people asking for half a cup of soup, not because it wasn’t good (lots of them said it was amazing), but because they wanted everyone else to have some. I remember someone at the second stop say: ‘God is showing me mercy, through you guys’.” Unfortunately the trip to Washington D.C .for Life was cancelled due to the impending blizzard. Both Junior and Sophomore classes attended a retreat with Tony Belizzii a well-known youth speaker. The Preaching Team has planned a Mass to be held for National Catholic Sisters Week on March 8 th. The Mass will honor the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill for their commitment to their original vision to provide a quality Catholic Secondary education for the young men and women of our area. One member of the Preaching Team was invited to preach at a special Lenten Vesper service at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Sparkill. Ashes were distributed at a special service which included a beautiful preaching by a member of the sophomore class. Stations of the Cross will be held for the student body on March 23rd. Our young women continue to support the Days For Girls Project held at Dominican Convent. They work with the sisters to provide sanitary supplies for young women in third world countries. This is a very special project and girls and their moms are always welcome to join us. Just call the Campus Ministry for more info. As an Easter People we live in the knowledge of the love of our Risen Savior. May these remaining days of Lent give you an opportunity to draw nearer to him so that you may have a joy filled “Alleluia” in your heart on Easter! -submitted by Sr. Nancy Richter, O.P. MUSIC NOTES Cut Footloose: Over 100 students are preparing for our Spring Musical, " Footloose." In our largest cast ever, 68 students will be acting, singing, and dancing across the stage in March! We are currently rehearsing in the library every day after school with Erika, our choreographer and Mrs. Rizzo. Our fabulous (and almost 40 member) stage crew led by Mrs. Nancy Quinn are building and painting on stage daily. We are all very excited about this show! Opening night is just two weeks away.... - submitted by Mrs. Nadia Rizzo ATHLETICS Congratulations to our Winter Sport Teams for a very successful season!! Spring Sports begin Monday, March 7, 2016.
